“Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty

heavens. Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing

greatness…Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.”

Psalm 150:1-2, 6

In our Lutheran tradition, worship is framed by our understanding of the 2nd and

3rd Commandments. Of the 2nd Commandment “you shall not take the name of

the Lord your God in vain”, Martin Luther in his Small Catechism said that we are

to “call upon Him in prayer, praise and thanksgiving.” That resonates with what

Psalm 150 says – worship is for praise – ‘full throated, full instrumented, hold

nothing back’ praise of God! That’s one of the reasons worship can hardly be

conceived of apart from singing.

Of the 3rd Commandment “remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy” Luther said

we are not to “neglect (God’s) word or the preaching of it, but regard it as holy

and gladly hear and learn it.” This informs the side (and components) of

Lutheran worship that focus on teaching, Scripture readings, and the confessions

of the church – in other words the spoken (rather than sung) portions. Regardless,

worship, properly speaking, is an “audible” event – every (one) with breath, in one

way or another, “praising the Lord.”

As a pastor I have always believed that within our rich Lutheran worship tradition

there is room to invite into the liturgy as full a range of expressions of prayer,

praise, and thanksgiving as we can – much as Psalm 150 says “let everything that

has breath praise the Lord.” Recently, Kyle Jones introduced to me and our

Worship Board a friend of his – Tanner Olson, a spoken word poet. Kyle

extended to us (our congregation) the invitation to have Tanner be a guest artist at

a future worship service.

From the Pastor’s Pen (continued)

In 2013 Tanner began a ministry called “Written to

Speak” (www.writtentospeak.com), whose aim is “to

spread hope and announce love through spoken word and

poetry.” Through his poetry, Tanner writes that he “seeks

to point readers and listeners toward the ultimate source of

hope and love, Jesus.” This past summer, I enjoyed giving a

series of sermons on some of the great hymns of the church,

and included among those messages was the story of Fanny

Crosby, one of the great hymn writers of all time. Fanny

was a poet, and wrote verse prolifically, as did such other

hymn writers as Reginald Heber – who wrote the hymn

“Holy, Holy, Holy.”

We are quite accustomed to poetry in our worship – though

usually we have gifted musicians leading us in singing it.

We are also quite accustomed to spoken words in worship –

we have scripture readers each week. The Psalms

themselves are examples of Hebrew verse, and one of the

greatest expressions of Christian faith in the Bible –

Philippians 2:5-11 (‘every knee will bow and every tongue

confess that Jesus is Lord…’) is believed to be an early

Christian (poem) hymn.

I am delighted that our Worship Board has accepted the

opportunity to have Tanner Olson with us the weekend

of October 12th-13th and include some of Tanner’s poetry

in our worship services. He has composed and will

speak at various points in the worship service

appropriate to the message of one of his poems. They

will serve as preparations, or entry points for, our

confession of sin, the sermon, and the Eucharist. In

addition, Tanner will lead our Sunday School students,

and any others interested, in a discussion of creative

writing and how he was inspired to bring together his

faith and gift of writing. Tanner conducts workshops

around the country specifically for schools to teach

creative writing, and has adapted this part of his ministry

to congregational settings.

I do hope you will invite others to join us for worship on

October 12 and 13, to hear this unique expression of our

Christian faith adapted to liturgical use. Much as we

enjoyed the creative gifts of artist Paul Oman last fall, I

think this is a splendid opportunity to invite folks you know

to receive the gifts of Tanner Olson.

More information about Tanner and his ministry is available

on his website and also on Page 7 of this newsletter.

Let’s join in welcoming Tanner to Calvary, letting every

breath we take in worship be about one thing … praising the

Lord!

MISSION AND OUTREACH

OCTOBER MISSION OF THE MONTH

October Mission of the Month: Shepherd’s Canyon Retreat & Broom Tree Ministries

“We laughed, cried, and shared how God can move us from brokenness to restoration. That out of death comes life.” ……..a testimonial from the first Shepherd’s Canyon Retreat client, March 2009 Wouldn’t you like to join us in making possible a counseling ministry for the restoration of hurting clergy couples and other professional church workers? Is there a need for such a ministry? Yes! * 20% of pastors are “in crisis” – they are just “hanging on,” coping with the issues they face day-to-day * Among Protestant clergy, an incredible number quit the ministry every month! * Only 50% of pastors entering the ministry today will make it five years * 80% of pastors will say that the ministry has had a negative impact on their family * Upwards of 70% of pastors fight depression

Broom Tree Ministries provides spiritual retreats for pastors and their spouses. The retreats are designed to provide uninterrupted time with God in rest, reflection, and beauty. We prioritize good food and lots of time with spouses. Our guests consistently experience “aha” moments that bring clarity and challenge for the next season of ministry. Since 1997 we have been strengthening the church one pastor at a time.

Each Shepherd’s Canyon seven-day retreat includes up to four client couples (singles are welcome), two counselors – male and female – and a retreat chaplain. Our twelve retreat therapists have a combined 250 years of counseling experience! All counseling is Bible-based. Shepherd’s Canyon Retreats are held at Standing Stones Retreat Center near Wickenburg, AZ. Learn more about Shepherd’s Canyon at www.StandingStonesAz.org. Broom Tree retreats are held in Michigan and more information can be found at http://broomtreeministries.org. Please mark your donations for “Mission

of the Month”.

Right-to-Write is a unique and simple program designed for people to donate pens and pencils (new or used) to put to good use by collecting and then dispensing them to children in developing countries. Donated pens and pencils are delivered to schools, orphanages, and hospitals by individual volunteers, travelers, and organizations who can distribute them hand to hand, person to person, to children who need them. We will again be collecting new and used pens/pencils to send to Right-to-Write. Please place your donations in the plastic tub on the table in the Narthex. Questions should be directed to Tina Baumgartner.

Please be aware of false emails that have been received by several members of Calvary Lutheran Church appearing to be from Pastor Ken Nelson. These emails are requesting that you email him or send him gift cards. THIS IS A SCAM! If you receive this email, please do not respond to it.

You will NEVER receive an email from Pastor Ken or any member of the church staff requesting money, gift cards or other kinds of financial support. Any of the church

requests will be made through our normal communication channels such as US mail or CONNECTIONS.

If you are ever in doubt about the validity of any communication from the church, please contact the church at 262.786.4010 or via email [email protected].

Letts. Here’s a teaser for you: Hollywood, 1938: As soon as

masterpiece for the screen, seventy-seven-year-old Maud Gage

Baum sets about trying to finagle her way onto the set.

Nineteen years after Frank’s passing, Maud is the only person

who can help the producers stay true to the spirit of the book—

because she’s the only one left who knows its secrets.

LUTHER’S “SEVEN MARKS” LIVE AT CALVARY! Calvary’s Music Ministry will host a special occasion on October 20th at 4:00 pm. To celebrate the Reformation a bit early, Director of Music Ministry Gene Traas will lead a hymn festival entitled “Luther’s ‘Seven Marks of the Church’.” Based on a hymn festival written by Evanston-based pastor Frank Senn, the program will visit each of Martin Luther’s Seven Marks, in text and hymns. From the moment you started reading this, you asked, “Luther’s what? What are these Marks?” During the Reformation, many people asked how the true Church could be easily recognized. Luther listed seven marks, or characteristics, of the Church to seek out. He said where the seven marks appeared, true faith can be found. Luther’s Seven Marks were: The holy Word of God, holy Baptism, Holy Communion, Absolution (confession & forgiveness), holy ministry, holy prayer, and the holy Cross. Come and learn a little more about Martin Luther through his own words, offered up by some of Calvary’s noted lectors. Come and sing. Come and enjoy.

“THIS IS MOST CERTAINLY TRUE – A STUDY OF THE SMALL CATECHISM”

Pastor Nelson is leading a study of Luther’s Small Catechism on Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. The Catechism is the focal point of our Confirmation instruction this year – so parents of Confirmation students are strongly encouraged to attend. But the Catechism is an enduring expression of the theology of the Lutheran Church, and, as originally intended, a cornerstone of faith conversations in the home. It’s always a good and relevant read! Contact Pastor Nelson at [email protected] with questions.

NEW WORSHIP BAGS FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN

You may have noticed an update to the Worship Bags (previously called Blessing

Bags) in the Narthex. While the bags themselves are new, what’s inside is roughly the

same as before. Each bag has coloring books, crayons, and a tactile activity or toy for

children to play with.

But the Worship Bags also have something new to help children engage in the service.

Each Worship Bag has a laminated order of service in it. Through this addition, we

hope to help children learn the names of the parts of the service and their general

order. We hope these bags will continue to be a blessing to children as we worship

together.

PASTOR KEN NELSON’S WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY WEDNESDAYS AT 12:30 P.M.

“Our ‘first study’ of the fall concerns itself with ‘last things’. To put it another way, we’ll begin with a study of the

end! Confused? Intrigued? Our study for the months of September and October will be the Book of Revelation, one of the

most talked about books of the Bible, and perhaps one of the least understood.

Revelation speaks to every generation of believers, as does all of Scripture. Our aim is to present the flow of Revelation, so

that its frequent (and at times bizarre) visions are better understood. A certain amount of “demystifying” its symbols, so often

captive to present-day speculation as to what they represent, is necessary. Please join us for our discussion, which will make

use of solid Lutheran interpretation through a video by Professor Craig Koester of Luther Seminary entitled “Is This the

Time”. No advance preparation necessary, and no materials needed other than your bible and pen to take copious notes from

Dr. Koester’s presentation and our ensuing conversations! Join us in the Sanctuary on Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. Bring a

friend!

“WRITTEN TO SPEAK” POET COMING TO CALVARY OCTOBER 12-13

Tanner Olson is an author, speaker and poet who lives in Nashville, TN. He started the creative

project Written to Speak in 2013 to spread hope and announce love through spoken word and

poetry. There are hundreds of ways we can express and share our faith and the love of God.

Poetry is one way.

For the last several years Tanner has taught poetry to students of all ages and has shared poetry

and stories for thousands of listeners at coffee shops, camps, churches, and in living rooms.

Tanner’s poetry communicates the Gospel message and the life of a Christian in a poetic and

entertaining way. His writing uniquely blends faith, humor and curiosity as he seeks to point

readers and listeners toward the ultimate source of hope and love - Jesus.

Tanner will be at Calvary for both worship services on October 12 and 13, blending his poetry into the liturgy. He will

perform more poems, share stories and answer questions after service on Saturday, October 12 . In addition, Tanner will

spend time following Sunday’s worship with children and students, inspiring them with poetry and helping them to write

their own poems. Adults are welcome to join. Invite your friends and neighbors to join us at either service for what promises to be a time of

hope, humor and fun. Saturday, October 12 at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 13 at 9:00 a.m.

FAITH FORMATION RALLY DAY AND BACK TO SCHOOL SUNDAY

September 9th began with a Back-to-School Blessing of the Children, and the commissioning of the Christian Education teachers. Pastor Ken kicked off the brunch in Fellowship Hall with prayer before a potluck of hot ham, rolls and many other delicious dishes. The morning ended with a Faithwebbing exchange.

Following the Rally Day meal, adults and children were invited to join in a faithwebbing experience. Similar to “speed dating”, adults were seated on one side and children were across from them. Kyle Jones then asked each pair to talk about a specific “big” question, such as “What has been your favorite age?” or “What’s important to you that doesn’t cost money?” Following the discussion on the question, the adults stayed in their chairs, and the students moved to have a conversation with a new grown up and a new question from Kyle. Feedback from those who participated said it was a fantastic and fun experience and allowed them to get to know members of their church family on a more personal level.
