She said that womenalways like jewelry but itdoesnt have to be expen-sive. Wardrobe has neck-

bling rings, which comein a variety of colors andshapes, light up and areapproximately $5.
If its gold and jewels youre looking for, Brian

He said that diamondearrings are usually apopular Valentines Dayitem and a pair of two-karat diamond earrings isabout $6,000. He said theprice can go up or down, depending on the qualityof the diamonds.
If that is out of your
price range, Rhodes said anice pair of gold earringsstarts at $35.
Rhodes said womencan come into the storeand put items they like ona wish list, which he saidis a way for them to drop
hints to their guys. Mencan then come into thestore and ask to see thelist and be right on target.
One other gift ideaRhodes gave is for a natu-ral rose that is lacqueredand has a 24 karat goldtrim, which is priced at$69.95.
You can put it on a cof-fee table or in a windowsill and it will last forever,Rhodes said.
If it is fresh flowers youare after for your Valen-tine, Lincoln Florist andGifts on G Street has avariety of flowers andprices to fit your needs.

Valentines Day a holiday that affects everyoneBY STEPHANIE DUMM
THE NEWS MESSENGER
Ah, Valentines Day. A holiday loved bysome, dreaded by others. A whole lot ofpink and red come to mind, as well as
roses and chocolate. How did Valentines Day originate, though? One theory has to do with Saint Valentine.I know this much: he used to marry cou-
ples against the Roman law, said WilliamAlterton, an English major at California StateUniversity Sacramento, when asked if heknew anything about the history of Valen-tines Day.
And California State University Sacramen-to history professor Candace Gregory offeredthe following hints.
There is a legend of an early Christianmartyr who was imprisoned for performingbanned marriages, Gregory said, adding thathe would send messages to his beloved
while awaiting his execution.
However, there is absolutely no proof ofthat story, Gregory said.
Early Christians would transform somePagan holidays and festivals to keep themaround but make them more Christianized,
Gregory said. As for an actual Saint Valentine, she
explained that there are three possible SaintValentines, one being unknown and possiblyfrom North Africa.
The other two were priests in Rome; allthree were reputed to be martyrs but nodetails of their martyrdom (or of their exis-tence) has been confirmed, Gregory said.
She also said that the name Valentine wasvery common in the Roman world.
Valentines Day is a celebration of mating
and love is a medieval concept, Gregory said.It was assumed by the 14th century thatmid-February was mating season and thatthe air was literally rife with love.
Although the exact origins of Valentines
Day are not known, the holiday has lastedthroughout the centuries.
It was widely celebrated in England andFrance by the 15th century, Gregory said. The first valentine
that we know of wassent in 1415 by theDuke of Orleans.
Duke of Orleans hadbeen in an Englishprison and wrote a poemto his wife while impris-oned, according to Gre-gory. She said thatthis may not havebeen the firstvalentine and
that there mayhave been earlierones but it set theball in motion for ValentinesDay.

By 1650, it was very common towrite a valentine greeting or poemfor a loved one, Gregory said. Pre-made valentines appear in the 19th
century. It is also known how Valentines Daywas celebrated centuries ago. Grego-ry said that poems and small gifts
would be exchanged, just like they do
today, but she added that theyexchanged them without the commer-cial pressure of today.
It was traditional until the 19th cen-tury to send handmade gifts or greet-ings, Gregory said. The handmadequality was part of the gift.
Emily Quackenbush, a CaliforniaState University Sacramento geogra-phy major, said she used to do theanti-Valentines Day thing in highschool, including joining the goth kids
and dressing in black. Her opinion mayhave changed a bit since then.It is good for people in relationships
to celebrate their unity, she said, who would spend the occasion with hergirlfriend.
Although Valentines Day haschanged over the years, the meaningbehind it is the same: to remind yourloved ones and friends how much youcare about them more so than on anyother day.
