W elcome to the January/February edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for
Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill, and a Happy New Year to our readers.
As another year begins, it’s time to start another diary. A sad business. You see, there was a time in my adolescence when I had to buy some enormous book in which to record my agonised observations on the cruelty of the world, brilliant poetic thoughts, and how I fancied Sharon. Years passed. I got a job. I went down to A4. Then, that symbol of middle age, a week to a view. I settled down. Married. Got a house. A4 became A5. Then one year there wasn’t enough to fill even that. Now I carry a small sheet of paper in my pocket, just in case something happens one day.
Looking back over 2015, I see that I noted in July that we needed milk. Let’s hope that 2016 is less traumatic. I’ve got a blank sheet of paper at the ready, though. And the moral? As we get older, life moves slower. It becomes, if anything, Stationery.

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY – PASSING YOUR PENSION ON
T he new pension freedom that came into force in April 2015 brought with it welcome
changes, allowing pensions to be passed to beneficiaries in a tax-efficient way. If you die before age 75 and before taking anything from your defined contribution pension, it will usually be paid to your beneficiaries as a tax-free lump sum.
ANNUITIES On your death, annuity payments will stop unless you took out a joint life annuity or an annuity with a guarantee for a fixed number for years. If your annuity is a ‘value-protected’ policy, any remaining fund can now be paid as a tax-free lump sum.
DEATH TAX RULES ON PENSION POTS Under the new rules, if you die before the age of 75, your pension can be paid to the beneficiary of your choice as a tax-free lump sum. (As long as it is less than the lifetime allowance, £1.25 million in tax year 2015-16.)
There will normally be no Inheritance Tax to pay. IF YOUR MONEY IS IN PENSION DRAWDOWN If you die before age 75 with your money in drawdown, your spouse, partner, dependent or beneficiary can stay in drawdown and take the income tax-free, take a lump sum tax-free, or buy an annuity where income will be paid free of tax.
If you die after age 75 then they can take an income, subject to tax at their marginal rate, take the pension as a lump sum which will be taxed at 45% (expected to be at the beneficiary’s marginal rate from 2016/2017) or buy an annuity where the income will be subject to tax at their marginal rate.

A vid readers will notice that I like to holiday in places named after
knitwear. We recently had a lovely time in Cardigan. One day, I’ll venture to Arran. The stay in the little known town of Tank-Top – well, the less said about that the better.
But Jersey is nice, mind. The largest of the Channel Islands, a little lump of rock that drifted away from France. France gave up its claim to the Channel Islands in the 13th century, and, in return, England gave up their claim over Normandy. Skirmishes and claims came and went over the centuries but the islands remained largely unconquered until the Second World War, when they were held by German forces for 5 years. Some architecture – if you can call it that – remains from the occupation. Most place names remind the visitor of the French origins of Jersey.
The island’s jagged northern coast faces the sea, while its softer, curvier southern coast looks back at the mainland whence it came, sculpted by sandy coves and bays. To the east a vast long straight beach is home to some seabirds and some very odd leisure activities. The west coast is dotted with remote harbour towns that the local buses seem to approach down windy green lanes with a great sense of reluctance.
The capital is Saint Helier, a big bustling brash town, where bars and bistros vie for space with banks and businesses. History is strewn amongst the modernity like clues on a treasure hunt. Out to sea, Elizabeth Castle sits beyond a tidal causeway, across sand and mud, like a recluse that would keep its distance. Disdainful, almost. An odd amphibious vehicle waddles over occasionally.
Follow the south coast westwards from Saint Helier by bus or by foot or by the cheap car hires and you trace a fractal pattern round little bays and bigger bays, along sand and over cliffs, the villas and palms giving way here and there to incongruous German watchtowers and gun emplacements. The terrifying reminders of Nazi occupation are all the more morbid for their lush surroundings. The south coast comes to an abrupt end at Corbiere, where a lighthouse on the rocks juts bravely out at sea.
The west coast comes next, long and straight and littered with bizarre hobbies. Having mastered the wheel some time back, humankind seems to seek stranger and stranger ways to move. That whole wheel business is so last millennium. I cobbled together a sand raft from milk crates but it didn’t move an inch and I might have looked silly were I any place other than Saint Ouen’s Bay on Jersey.
At the north-west tip of the island, 14th century Grosnez Castle sits on a headland, surrounded by German concrete bunkers and boxes like a limousine at a stock car rally.
The north coast is the rugged one, scenery reminiscent of Pembrokeshire or Cornwall, gaunt cliffs and coves giving way to timid villages that nestle in the dips. I don’t know if it’s something in the air, but they were up to all sorts here too; specifically, falling down a muddy

vertical hillside to the sea on tiny motorbikes. I got the milk crate out again but they said I was in their way.
We complete our circumnavigation with the east coast, where miles of ragged rocks stretch out to the horizon from fishing villages and castles. It’s said that the island doubles in size at low tide as these rocks become part of the land.
It’s 40 or 50 miles, depending on your route. Milk crates may take considerably longer, like forever. For all its ordinary townlike qualities, Saint Helier affords all the creature comforts. One can be as rugged as one wishes during the day, high on coast paths or sitting stationary on an unpromising milk crate, scared by German guns or charmed by Jersey cows. By
night, one cleans up and dines well and is ready for another day of exploration. Maybe this time we use the car.
So where now can we go on our knitwear trail? I know. Kashmir. I’ll just go and book my Annual Sleeve.

DEAN SHULTON Chiropodist The importance of comfortable footwear
I don't intend to be pedantic, I'm not usu-ally a person who lectures people about what we should or shouldn't do. After all,
we are supposedly adults and can make our own decisions.
However, if I had a pound for every time I hear the phrase "I have this recurring painful corn, it can't be my shoes as I've always worn ones in a similar style", I wouldn't have to work anymore!
Yes, unfortunately, it may be your beloved and trusted footwear that may be causing some of your problems. Of course, over time our bone structure changes, be it flat footedness or arthritic condition, causing us to mobilise differently. This can produce areas of pressure susceptible to forming a corn or callous.
However, if there is a seam in your shoes around the tops of the toes, then this seam may be causing pressure, and what does pressure make? No, it's not prizes, it's corns! And pain-ful ones at that. Perhaps a less fashion con-scious rounded toed footwear may be the way forward. It has been known that with a change of footwear some corns disappear for good.
This may not always be the case, as there are other factors that can play a role. However, for a bit of comfort it may be worth trying.

A re you thinking of adding a four-legged bundle of fun to your home this spring? Animals aren’t gifts that
can be returned for a refund, so introducing a new pet into the family needs serious consideration and planning. Here are some tips to help you with your planning, from preparing your family for a new arrival to choosing the pet which will suit you best. • Rehome a rescue: There are rescue centres brimming with animals of all shapes and sizes who need a kind loving family. Sadly shelters become crowded during the months following Christmas when pets get “returned” by the dozen. Consider giving the gift of a forever home to an animal this year!
• Research: Particularly with dogs, different breeds require very different lifestyles. Take some time to reflect on what you can offer and how this would suit the breed you are considering. Providing food and shelter is only the start; can you also provide the right amount of physical and mental stimulation that they need?
• Prepare: Like any new family member, puppies and kittens will need some new kit! From litter, to grooming supplies, beds and toys – make sure you have everything prepared to create the perfect new home for the new arrival. You could also use pheromone diffusers throughout the house to ease your new pet’s worries and make them feel as safe and comfortable as possible; ask the team if you’d like more details about this.
• Pet introduction: Are your current residents sufficiently prepared for the new arrival, particularly other pets? You will need to plan their introduction, which ought to be done steadily and in stages, all of which should be included in your research. Should the excitement become too much, ensure all pets have an easy escape route, making sure not to leave new pets unattended with old pets as it will take a while for territory, dominance and ranking to be agreed upon.
• Health costs: There is no NHS for pets, so owning an animal is going to incur some additional costs. We would always advise that you take out pet insurance as soon as you get your pet, to cover unforeseen treatments and expenses. If you choose to take out pet insurance at a later date, some insurers may refuse to pay out - dependant on how soon your pet needs treatment after you’ve signed the policy - so it’s better to be safe than sorry and get your pet covered from the very beginning. Insurance will cover the unexpected, but routine healthcare will be an extra cost.
At The Vet we offer the Best Start Plan for puppies and kittens for the first three months of life, including:
vaccinations, microchipping, flea and worming treatments and discounts on neutering, all for just a £75 one-off payment, or £65 when purchased with the Pet Healthcare Plan.
The Pet Healthcare Plan is for pets over three months old and spreads the cost of routine care over a year, offering savings and discounts via a monthly direct debit payment, prices start from £7.99 a month. Alternatively, once your pet has had their initial vaccinations, you can take advantage of the Vaccination for Life plan which is a one-off payment of £79.99 for their booster vaccinations for the rest of their life.
Please don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions about the advice or products above, or pop in and say hello – if we can, we’ll give you a tour of the clinic too!

W e're a lively, friendly and social club with a good mix (gender, ethnicity and age) of local people who care. We’d be very
happy to talk to you further about our club and you would be very welcome to join us at one of our fellowships (with no obligation). Some of the chari-ties we’ve helped over the last year include Chigwell Riding Trust, Loughton Food Bank, Revitalise Jubilee Lodge, St Clare Hospice, Marie Curie Cancer and End Polio, Diabetes UK. Please contact Pesh (contact details in the next column) if you would like to get involved with Rotary in any capacity.
Club President Pesh ran in the Royal Parks Half Marathon. He was part of a team of over 100 run-ners for Chigwell School in support of Cancer Re-search. Well done to you all. It's not too late to donate. Please sponsor him at www.virginmoneygiving.com/kalpeshkapasiawala
We’ve had a great line up of speakers recently. We were treated to a fascinating presentation by Janet Clements, a volunteer from Barnardos, the club donated £500 raised at the very successful Chigwell Fete.
We had a full fellowship to listen to inspirational polio sufferer Ola Akinkunle. He contracted polio when he was a baby at 15 months old in Nigeria, and his struggles for equality are compelling and heart warming. He has less than 10% use of his left leg and only 60% of his right. The money raised from the evening will go to the End Polio campaign, if you would like to help too please donate online at https://www.give.net/20043326.
We hosted our monthly Memory Cafe at the Lough-ton Club, 8 Station Road, Loughton IG10 4NX, it
was very well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by the guests, the free session are on 2nd Friday of every month.
We had a wonderful Rotary District Conference. Great guest speakers, including TV presenter Dr Dawn Harper, Christine Hamilton and the amazing Paralympian Steve Bown, Captain of the GB Rugby Team for London 2012, who credits Rotary for the support he received in buying his first sports wheel chair.
Membership enquires & volunteers are always welcome and appreciated.
