Plans have been afoot for some time to transform High Friars Lane, where the entrance to Tyneside Cinema’s box office resides, from grot to grotto. With the opening of new bar Vicolo (meaning ‘alley’ in Italian – clever eh?), it’s fast becoming a more welcoming and inviting space.

Vicolo’s continental ambience and stylish atmosphere is inspired by chef Tom Adlam’s desire to create a foodie hub in the centre of the city and treats include the ‘sandwich by the inch’, Vicolo’s own ice cream, ethically sourced coffee and cocktails.Vicolo, tynesidecinema.co.uk/food-drink/vicolo

Doing food challenges is definitely an odd hobby. I’ve done about 20 challenges so far and I’m already booked until November.

People assume that because I’m slim, I must be one of ‘the lucky ones’, but that is far from the truth. I eat healthily the rest of the time and go to the gym. A challenge is one hour of a two-three week period of my life.

I do food challenges because - well - I love food. I’ve always eaten quite a lot growing up, taking me to a size 14/16. So I decided to lose the weight but my appetite didn’t change and I’m still always hungry. I studied Marketing and Management at Newcastle University and realised that challenges are just marketing techniques for restaurants.

The biggest challenge I’ve taken on was a 27ins pizza. It was absolutely delicious but the final crusts I just couldn’t stomach.www.facebook.com/katesfoodchallenges

Edinburgh Fringe Festival is renowned the world over as one of the best places in the world to watch comedy, but if you’d rather avoid the sky-high ticket prices, crowds of tourists and exhausted comedians handing out flyers along the Royal Mile, The Stand has just the thing.

The comedy club has managed to snag some of the most exciting comedians for a series of special Fringe preview shows. Throughout July and into August, you can see the best in the biz for a fraction of the Fringe cost in a series of double bill shows.

Highlights include the gossipy style of Stephen Bailey and The News Quiz’s Robin Morgan (July 10); Vladimir McTavish tells humorous tales from his travels around Scotland on his free bus pass, and there’s knockabout radical stand-up Topical Storm (July 17); ‘actor, comedian, idiot’ Seymour Mace joins up with the unflinchingly hilarious honesty of Gary Little’s new show (July 18); while local favourites Gavin Webster and Lee Kyle perform a double bill filled to bursting with angry rants and subtle genius. With more than 100,000 people packing the streets of Newcastle for the first NE1 Newcastle Motor Show in 2015, the UK’s largest open-air city centre motor show, this year’s free event is set to be bigger and better with more cars and fun for the whole family planned July 9-10.

For this year’s event, NE1 has teamed up with the motor industry’s biggest names from Aston Martin, Bentley and Jaguar Landrover to BMW, Infiniti and Tesla to bring luxury supercars and more to Grey Street and beyond.

There’s something for petrol heads of all kinds at this year’s show, starting with the supercars and rare vehicles on Grey Street, which will include Aston Martin’s most powerful DB model to date, the DB11, and the Vantage GT8

(pictured above). There will also be Lambrettas on High Bridge, the motor world’s biggest names on Grainger Street, Northumberland Street and at Grey’s Monument, and the hottest modified cars from across the UK in the Bigg Market. This year will also see the return of the Grand Depart with all the cars leaving for the day along Grey Street from 4pm.

This year’s event coincides with the Formula One British Grand Prix, which will be shown live on the big screen in Old Eldon Square.

There are also activities for all the family in the NE1 Fanzone on Grainger Street, including a driving simulator and a visit from Doodlebug – a VW Beetle for little ones to draw on. Across the city, free getintonewcastle.co.uk

A riotous celebration of Newcastle’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, Newcastle Pride is back bigger and better than ever this year - July 15-17

Three days of live music, a colourful parade, a charity fun run, cabaret, film screenings, dance and family zones make Newcastle’s Pride one of the longest running free festivals of its kind in the UK.

The event, for which NE1 is the headline sponsor for the third time, is on the Town Moor, festivities kicking off on the Friday with the Northern Frontrunners 5k run. If that sounds too energetic, the screening of Sing-Along-A-Mama-Mia will have the Town Moor in fine voice.

Saturday’s parade is a real highlight and last year more than 10,000 people marched through the city centre. Join the parade at Newcastle Civic Centre and head down Northumberland Street, Percy Street and into Exhibition Park.

Live music will fill the Town Moor on Saturday night, with performances from boy band 5ive, songwriter Carol Laula, pop rockers The Ambition, club favourite Tina Cousins, X Factor and I’m A Celebrity… star Jake Quickenden

with Heather Small (M People). Also performing on the main stage will be former Brother Beyond star Nathan Moore, X Factor finalist Keira Weathers, BGT star Calum Scott, The Voice contestant Lorraine Crosby, and 90s favourite Sonia.

A fun fair and zones for all the family to enjoy are dotted around the site all weekend, with the Steve Paske Health Zone, family and youth zone, Eazystreet Cabaret Tent, Powerhouse dance tent and market stalls.

Remember to join in Sunday’s Candlelit Vigil at Newcastle Civic Centre, to celebrate the lives of people who have been lost, and those whose lives are still difficult. A perfect opportunity of quiet reflection, which will bring Pride weekend to an emotional end.
