But John knows that there is one thing that is truly important, so John keeps insisting, keeping intruding, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord!” John is not so out of touch with the times that he doesn’t know that nobody uses ye or thee anymore. He just wants to make sure we get the point. If he simply said “Prepare the way of the Lord!” we might say “That certainly is a good idea; somebody ought to do something about that. Maybe the church council could form a committee to address this issue.” So John says “Prepare Ye the way of the Lord!” This is not something that somebody ought to do something about. This is a call to us, to each and every disciple of Jesus. “Prepare ye the way of the Lord!” The way of the Lord runs through our hearts, though our minds, through our schedules, through our lives. Advent is a sea- son of preparing. As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, the season of Advent reminds us that all year long we are to be preparing the way of the Lord. As we live out the marks of disciple- ship – daily prayer, weekly worship, daily Bible reading, serving in and beyond the congregation, nurturing relationships and giving generously, the Holy Spirit works in and through us, preparing the way of the Lord. Advent is also a season of hope. These days seem much more given to anxiety rather than to hope. There is certainly more than enough for us to be anxious and worried about. But Advent has never been about finding hope in the circumstances of life. Rather, it is about God coming into this world bringing us hope. One of my favorite Advent texts is Isaiah 35 with this wonderful call: Strengthen all the weary hands, steady all the trembling knees, say to all faint hearts “Take courage!” For your God comes to V OLUME 26, I SSUE 11 DECEMBER 2012 The Anchor FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH PLANO, ILLINOIS Pastor’s Corner Baptism, Christmas Service(s) info, Craft Night(s), Flower charts, Party!! 2/3 Recipe-Caramel Corn & Almond Bark Candy, Carol Sing, December Library News, Prayer List, Prayer chain info 4/5 Book Club, Offering, Women’s Bible Study, Annual Reports Needed, Stewardship request, Golden Harvesters, December Calendar 6/7 December Volunteers, December Birthday & Anniversaries, December Prayer List 8/9 Youth Director News, Bear Making Retreat, Sunday School Snippets, Living Nativity 10/11 Readings for December 2012 12/2/2012 1 st Sunday of Advent Jeremiah 33:14-16 Psalm 25:1-10 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 Luke 21:25-36 12/9/2012 2 nd Sunday of Advent Malachi 3:1-4 Luke 1:68-79 Philippians 1:3-11 Luke 3:1-6 12/16/2012 3 rd Sunday of Advent Zephaniah 3:14-20 Isiah 12:2-6 Philippians 4:4-7 Luke 3:7-18 12/23/2012 4 th Sunday of Advent Micah 5:2-5a Luke 1:46b-55 Hebrews 10:5-10 Luke 1:39-45 12/30/2012 1 Samuel 2:18-20,26 Psalm 148 Colossians 3:12-17 Luke 2:41-52

CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICES

Volunteers are needed for the Christmas Eve worship services to be held at 5:00 PM and 11:00 PM on Monday, Dec 24th. If you would like to volunteer to serve, there will be a sign-up sheet at the back of the church.

The charts to sign up for Altar Flowers and Special Flowers have been moved to the Fellowship Hall. They are located just above the drinking fountain. Hopefully, this new location will make it ‘easier’ to remember to sign up to bring flowers for those special occasions.

The family of Jean Anderson invite her church friends (and "family") to an Open House in honor of her 90th Birthday. The Celebration will be held Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012 at First Lutheran Church's Fellowship Hall from 1 pm to 3 pm. Please omit gifts; your love and good wishes are the only precious gifts she needs or wants.

Quilting Needs – Clear Plastic Storage Containers

The quilters are in the process of organizing their storage space by adding some new shelving to store their supplies and quilts. Donations of new (or gently used) clear plastic storage containers would be greatly appreciated (approximate size: W20”xH14”xL20” - 56 qt). Clear containers will help to keep supplies clean and also make it easier to identify the contents stored. Please contact Bev Vilmin if you have any questions. Thank you.

Bear Making Retreat coming in February! See the sign up sheet in the back of the Church Sanctuary. Tentative Date and Time is Saturday, February 2nd. 9am – 2pm. We will spend the day, pinning and cutting out our Bear patterns, sewing and stuffing our bears and if time allows making a hat and vest for our bears. If not you can complete these items at home. If you have a portable sewing machine you can bring and are willing to share for the day, please let us know. As we get closer to the date we will have a supply list of items you will need to bring with you. Your bear can be made from new material or old

clothing as long as it is on the heavier side. This will be a great opportunity for anyone wishing to make a “Memory” Bear out of a deceased loved one’s clothing and/or pieces of Jewelry. There will be a small fee involved, yet to be determined. The retreat will be under the direction Tammy Dettman and Jerri Lynn Baker. Tammy for her experience and Jerri Lynn because she loves being in charge. Registration will be cut off at the first 10 who registered. A waiting list will be made of any others interested, who will be notified if someone drops out or if more sewing machines become available. This is open to Church members and your friends, ages 10 and up. It would be best if you had some sewing experience. We won’t be teaching you how to sew this day. If you have any questions please check with Jerri Lynn Baker, who will forward the hard ones to Tammy.

Legend of the Candy Cane

Look at the Candy Cane What do you see?

Stripes that are red Like the blood shed for me.

White is for my Savior Who’s sinless and pure!

“J” is for Jesus My Lord, that’s for sure!

Turn it around And a staff you will see

Jesus my shepherd Was born for me!

Sunday School Vacation Parents and children are reminded that there will be no Sunday School on Sunday, Dec. 23, 30 and Jan 6. This will allow children and teachers time to enjoy the holiday season with their families.
