Student Council

News In January, the Student Council was very busy organizing

events, such as the 8th Grade Open House and the Semi

Formal Dance. During mid-terms, Student Council was

successful in selling pizza each day during the break between

exams. Also, on January 27, in a means to bridge the gap be-

tween the Middle School and the High School, some Student

Council members visited the Middle School to hold a

Leadership Conference with the 8th Graders. At this time we

taught them about life at the High School. We also discussed

what Student Council entails and most importantly we went

over tactics and strategies for interviewing. This month, Stu-

dent Council plans to continue volunteering and helping the

community with activities such as babysitting and working for

with the Human Service

Department. Lastly, in the

month of February National

Honor Society will be selling

Munson's Chocolates and

DECA will be re-opening the

school store.

As the semester begins, the Health teachers welcome new students

into their classes. Students will begin the semester working on ways

to improve communication skills, understanding conflict resolution

skills, and ways to manage stress. Students will be working on a

variety of assessments, projects, discussions, and more as they develop

ways to continue to lead a healthy lifestyle in choices they will need to

make throughout their life.

PE students have adjusted the number of times they meet per week.

If students had PE two days a week for the first semester, they will

now be in class three days each week. If students had PE for three

days a week, they will meet for two days. Activities for the second se-

mester will include Basketball, Net Sports, Ultimate Frisbee, and Rec-

reational Lawn Sports. Students will continue to work on sport skills

and fitness skills by working in the weight room.

Health and Physical

Education Department

SAT Update: On October 7, 2015, the CT State Board of Education adopted the SAT as the statewide

assessment in lieu of the Smarter Balanced Assessment (or SBAC) for grade 11 public

school students. This assessment was endorsed by Governor Malloy and has been ap-

proved by the U.S. Department of Education as part of CT’s Elementary and Secondary

Education Act Flexibility Request. The principles within this request are designed to

support State efforts to improve student academic achievement and increase the quality

of instruction.

The Connecticut SAT School Day will be administered to all 11th grade students on

March 2, 2016. The administration of the SAT will help reduce the testing burden and

potentially expand opportunities for students to use the state assessment results for col-

lege admission purposes as well. It will be important, however, to check with your col-

lege choices as to whether or not they require the essay portion of the SAT because this

will not be given as part of the state assessment.

Some additional details for the March 2nd, 2016 test day:

There are 3 parts to the SAT: Reading, Writing and Language and Mathematics.

Total testing time will be 3 hours.

The essay portion of the SAT will not be administered on March 2nd.

Four answer choices and no penalty for guessing.

400-1600 score scale.

While the Connecticut school-day SAT state assessment results on March 2nd, 2016 can

be used for college admission purposes as well, we encourage you to speak with your

child’s prospective college and determine if they require the essay portion. If that is the

case, speak with your child’s guidance counselor and discuss registering for an addition-

al SAT testing date. In order to take the essay portion of the SAT, all sections of the

SAT (Reading, Writing and Language and Mathematics) must be taken together on the

same day.

If you have any questions, please contact us at (860) 632-4841.

Music News

On Friday, January 16th and Saturday, January 17th,

Julia Allen (soprano) Megan Camilleri (clarinet), Jen-

nifer Salce (clarinet), and Merry Wang (flute) took part

in the Northern Region Music Festival with many other

talented High School students. These young musicians

were chosen by audition to take part in the festival. The

audition included playing or singing an advanced solo,

performing select scales and arpeggios and sight reading

or sight singing. Only students with the top scores were

accepted to perform with their Northern Region Festival

Ensemble. The festival included

many hours of rehearsal culminat-

ing in a fantastic performance

which took place at New Britain

High School on Saturday evening.
