Masses at St. Gertrude Parish Office Info
St. Gertrude is a Roman Catholic Parish in the Dominican heritage of prayer, preaching and teaching. Under our Lady’s mantle, gathered as the Body of Christ, we celebrate Him in the Sacraments, Sacred Scripture and in Catholic education. Serving our brothers and sisters in the New Evangelization, we seek to grow in love as we journey with Jesus to God the Father, in the Holy Spirit.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK | Rev. George Schommer, O.P.
Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Gertrude Church: We can rejoice in the fact that we have now returned to the public celebration of the Mass for two full months. Unfortunately, the joy of returning to the celebration of the Mass has been mixed with anxiety about safety in light of the coronavirus.
At this time, there is a state-wide mandate for facial coverings “in any indoor location that is not a residence.” This applies to our parish church and other buildings. There are specific exemptions for medical reasons given on the state website.
The moment within Mass where we are most vulnerable to spread the virus is when we come forward to physically receive Holy Communion. In order to minimize risk and reduce anxiety during Communion, we are updating our Holy Communion protocols with some minor changes and some renewed emphasis.
• Try as best as possible to maintain six feet of distance between families in the communion line. Bear in mind as you are lining up that not everyone will be going forward for Communion.
• When you reach the end of the aisle, line up along the altar rail with 6 ft (roughly the distance between the rail’s metal columns) between families.
• Avoid touching the rail as it is a high-touch surface. If you need the rail to brace yourself for kneeling or standing up, it would be better to simply remain standing.
• Remove your mask before the minister comes to you, so that you are ready to consume the Eucharist when you receive it.
• Receiving Holy Communion on the tongue is strongly discouraged by Archbishop Schnurr for the safety of the minister and the communicant.
• If you are receiving in the hand:
o Prepare your non-dominant hand as an altar by putting it out flat with your dominant hand underneath so that the host won’t slip or roll once it is placed on your hand.
o Do not move either hand until the minister’s hand is out of the way.
o The minister will sanitize his hands if any contact is made.
With the trust and simplicity of a small child, I give myself to You today, O Lord Jesus, my Master. I leave You complete freedom in directing my soul. Guide me
along the paths You wish. I won’t question them. I will follow You
trustingly. Your merciful Heart can do all things! (Diary, #228).
• If you are receiving on the tongue:
o Please extend your tongue out and tilt your head back so that the minister can place the host without making contact.
o Do not close your mouth until the minister’s hand is out of the way.
o The minister will sanitize his hands if any contact is made.
• Replace your mask after consuming the host and before returning to your place.
• The communion ministers will continue to purify and sanitize their hands before and after the distribution of Holy Communion
While this protocol mitigates the risks involved in physically receiving Holy Communion, it does not eliminate them. If you are particularly vulnerable, it is still recommended to avoid coming up for Communion. Since masks have to be lowered in order to receive Communion, the risk of transmitting the virus during this time cannot be eliminated.
The full effect of the Sacrament of the Eucharist is found in spiritual communion. When we receive physical communion, our goal is spiritual communion with the Lord, but we can also receive spiritual communion by making an act of devotion during the elevation of the host and the chalice. If you are not able to physically receive at this time, the graces of the Sacrament remain available to you.
Beyond these practical protocols, it is essential that we prepare our hearts to be able to receive the benefits of the Eucharist. Bearing with others’ anxieties in love, helps us to reap the spiritual fruits of the Sacrament.

RESTORING PUBLIC WORSHIP AT ST. GERTRUDE CHURCH Updated () June -.-.
¶ The Archbishop dispenses the faithful from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass. Please do not come if you feel sick. Those who are vulnerable may consider coming to a less crowded weekday Mass.
Health and Safety Measures ¶ Keep a prudent distance inside the church. Ushers will help ensure safe seating on Sundays. ¶ The pew in front of and behind your family should be empty. Keep at least one kneeler-length (about C/E of most pews) empty to the side. ¶ We ask that the faithful wear cloth masks for the sake of the common good. People with breathing difficulties and young children should not wear masks. ¶ Hand sanitizer will be available at the entrances of the church, along with baskets for collection envelopes. ¶ Only friars, sisters, novices, and some staff members will be in the sanctuary and sacristy. Lectors, acolytes, and extraordinary ministers will not serve for the time being. ¶ Volunteers will help wipe down high-touch surfaces between Sunday Masses.
Holy Communion ¶ You are not obliged to receive Holy Communion at every Mass you attend. Consider making a spiritual communion, or receiving at a weekday Mass. ¶ The faithful who choose to receive Holy Communion will come up to the altar rail, where one or two priests will distribute the sacred host. Keep space in line, and only remove your mask at the rail. ¶ You may receive on the tongue or in the hand, kneeling or standing. ¶ Those who require a low-gluten host should inform an usher, and may receive at the rail after Mass. The church will keep a supply of such hosts.
Confessions ¶ Confession is available every day: see the schedule for times, or call the office to make an appointment. ¶ Confessions will return to the church, using the handicap-accessible confessional. ¶ Please keep a prudent distance between households in line. Sanitize your hands before opening the door. ¶ Inside the confessional, do not touch anything. Do not kneel on the kneeler, and stay behind the screen. ¶ Once there are no penitents in line, the priest will leave, so please arrive on time.

A House of Prayer and Adoration ¶ Our church is a refuge of prayer and contemplation in these troubled times: please maintain reverence and quiet, including before and after Mass. Conversations should take place outside. ¶ The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for adoration every weekday from =.>?—A pm. On Wednesdays, there will be exposition from CU—9 pm. Some special events or liturgies may occasionally replace adoration, so check the church calendar. ¶ We hope to return to perpetual adoration as soon as it is safe to do so.
¶ The friars will continue to fulfill all Mass intentions for every day. They will be announced in the bulletin rather than during Mass due to schedule shifts. ¶ The schedule above will change in the weeks ahead. Please check the website for updates.

Festival: Thank you to EVERYONE who helped make the online auction (donors-bidders-volunteers-solicitors-follow up phone callers – and especially our auction chair Jenny Steiner) a super huge success. We hope everyone enjoyed being a part of the excitement. There is still time to catch a bargain. Visit auctionstg.givesmart.com and view items that show no bid. Don’t miss the Gatlinburg cabin #904 for the week of St Gertrude’s spring break. Call Cathy at 290-3391 if you find something you can’t live without...
A special thank-you again to the Seeger family for sponsoring the golf ball drop. Our winner of the $1000 was Rick Sammons. Thank you to the Madeira Fire Dept for stepping in to drop the balls. Due to Covid-19 the Helicopter could not drop the balls.
Thank you to Mike Castrucci for supplying the car for the grand raffle. It was a super huge hit!!! The winner of the car is quite a story. His name is Patrick Creamer and he was desperately in need of a new car. He purchased many tickets in hope of winning. He is also leaving for the seminary this weekend. I think he had extra help from above. We are very happy for Patrick and wish him all the best as he enters the seminary.
The winner of the second prize of pizza for a year was Ruth Stubbe. Thank you to Kenwood Larosa
There is no way I could list everyone in need of a thank you. Just know that the committee is very grateful for everyone’s support. It has been a crazy year but we got through it TOGETHER!
