How Can I Pray During the Summer? Try the Daily Examen

Adapted and used with permission from www.loyolapress.org

A great way to pray is to look for God's presence in your life.

More than 400 years ago St. Ignatius of Loyola encouraged

prayer-filled mindfulness by proposing what has been called

the Daily Examen. Try this version of St. Ignatius's prayer.

1. Become aware of the presence of God.

2. Review the day with gratitude.

3. Gratitude is the foundation of our relationship with God.

Walk through your day in the presence of God and note

its joys and delights.

4. Pay attention to your emotions.

5. Reflect on the feelings you experienced during the day. Ask what God is saying through

these feelings.

6. Choose one feature of the day and pray from it.

7. Ask the Holy Spirit to direct you to something during the day that God thinks is particu-

larly important. It may be a vivid moment or something that seems insignificant.

8. Look toward tomorrow.

9. Ask God to give you light for tomorrow's challenges.

St. Ignatius encouraged people to talk to Jesus like a friend. End the Daily Examen with a

conversation with Jesus. Ask forgiveness for your sins. Ask for his protection and help. Ask

for his wisdom about the questions you have and the problems you face. Do all this in the

spirit of gratitude.

fidelity to the identity and mission of the parish.

for election to the Parish Pastoral Council are invited to

Holy Trinity is a Catholic parish sponsored by the

Society of Jesus. We share the Society's mission to

serve the faith and to promote justice. As disciples of

Christ, we seek to be transformed by the Holy Spirit

through our celebration of Eucharist and our

practice of Ignatian spirituality into a welcoming and

prayerful community that shares God's life and love

with each other and the world.

Annual outdoor Mass and Picnic

Sunday, June 12th, 10:30am

Georgetown Visitation

Like many of you, I have enjoyed the annual Holy Trinity outdoor

Mass and picnic at Georgetown Visitation for many years. Here are

a few of my reasons:

Celebration of Mass outdoors with sunshine, birds

singing along with our talented choir, and all of us in

casual clothes sitting in beach chairs (or picnic blankets)

celebrating Mass in this joyful environment. For me, it is

a very easy way to “find God in all things”.

An all-American picnic with good food and good drink.

Grilled hot dog lunch with side dishes of baked beans,

potato salad, chips, and watermelon.

Old fashioned, low tech games for the kids—sack races,

corn hole toss, water balloons, “designer” face-painting,

etc. Mandy-the-Clown will of course make her third

annual appearance with her amazing skills in balloon

animal making, stilt-walking, and more!

It is such a joyful way to connect with others in this

relaxed and beautiful environment. Every year I come

away meeting new parishioners and renewing older

friendships.

Volunteering to assist is also a way to connect with

others. If you are new to the parish, I suggest not only

coming to the event, but also signing up to assist. You

can see the volunteer opportunities on the parish website

(trinity.org) under “Headlines”.

So, come join your family and old/new friends by participating in

this annual fun event! No need to register. You only need to sign

up if you wish to volunteer.

Mark your calendar for June 12th at 10:30am! Grab your beach

chairs, beach blankets, and sunscreen. I look forward to meeting

you (again)!

The parish community prays for all the dead every

day at every Mass. However, we encourage

parishioners to mention specific persons by name

during the General Intercessions when invited to

do so by the presider.

Parishioners can also request that a specific person

be remembered by name at a particular weekday

Mass by calling or visiting the receptionist's desk in

the parish center during normal office hours.

Names must be submitted one week in

advance. Persons to be so remembered at weekday

Masses this week are:

Please email proposed updates for the website or bulletin to the

parish staff member responsible for overseeing the activity (see

page 2 sidebar) by 2pm Thursday, 8 days before the targeted

weekend. Please note that the bulletin is published online, so

information you submit may be available online.

Questions? [email protected]

To add a name to these prayer lists, contact Rose

Mary Padberg at: [email protected]. You must

be an immediate relative of the one to be

remembered, or have express permission in order

to add a name to these lists. The names on this

prayer list will be mentioned aloud at Sunday Mass

during the General Intercessions and will be

published in the parish eLetter and bulletin.

We also invite parishioners to write the name of

deceased loved ones in the Book of the Dead which

is kept in the back of the chapel. The parish

community remembers these persons each time we

gather for Eucharist.

IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY

FAITH FORMATION/RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Contemplative Leaders in Action (CLiA)

Faber Room Today, Sunday, May 22nd, 4:30pm -5:15pm

As St. Ignatius wrote, we are called to be “contemplatives in

action,” to be in the world but not of the world. If you are in

your 20s or 30s, and are looking for a spiritual community,

consider applying to CLiA which aims to harness the

wisdom and grace of Ignatian spirituality to create a more

integrated faith and work lifestyle. CLiA is in its sixth year

of creating cohorts of 12-15 young adults who meet

monthly at Holy Trinity (5:00pm-7:15pm on the third

Sunday of the month) to hear presenters and discuss issues

related to living a fully authentic life rooted in faith. This is

a 2 year commitment (with summers off) and includes an

annual fee of $500. The application deadline is June 1st.

Parish Drives and Donations 2016-2017

We are in need of volunteers willing to head up the

following annual Holy Trinity drives next year:

School Supply Drive: Occurs in the Fall and benefits

Washington Jesuit Academy, Washington School for Girls,

and San Miguel School.

Winter Coat Drive: Conducted in the late fall as part of

the Archdiocese of Washington’s Coat of Many Colors

drive.

Diaper Drive: Occurs after Easter and benefits the

Northwest Center as well as the DC Diaper Bank.

If you have any interest in spearheading one of these

drives, or you have questions about what that would entail,

please contact Kate Tromble at [email protected] or

(202) 903-2809. Without volunteers to take the lead we

won’t be able to conduct these important drives next year.

What is a Holy Door? “A door that opens in the Church in

order to reach out to those who for

many reasons are far away.” -Pope

Francis

A Holy Door is a special door desig-

nated in a cathedral or significant church that stands as a

symbol of Jesus Christ who said, “I am the gate. Whoever

enters by me will be saved...” (John 10:9). Pilgrims pass

through the Holy Door as a sign that they are leaving past

sin behind and entering into a new Christian way of living.

The sixth grade Sunday Morning Faith Formation class

visited the Holy Door at St Matthew's Cathedral on Sun-

day, May 15th to see the “Holy Door” and to learn about

the Year of Mercy and the art at the Cathedral.

Building on Tradition

A Vision for the Future of Holy Trinity The Capital Campaign has reached 92% of its $12.5 Million

Goal! We sincerely appreciate the 693 Donors for getting

us this far. If you have not yet joined this exciting

endeavor for Holy Trinity, we ask that you please make a

gift soon and be a part of Holy Trinity’s history. Over the

next few weeks, a listing of the Donors will appear in the

Bulletin. We welcome you to join the list!

Contributions to the Capital Campaign support the

renovations made to Trinity Hall, the Upper and Lower

Schools, Church, and our Social Justice and Ignatian

Spirituality Programs. We are striving to reach our goal

very soon, which will allow us to minimize borrowing.

With Trinity Hall being the largest gathering space on

campus, the retractable seats are a popular named gift

opportunity. The cost per seat is $5,000.00 and comes

with a name plate. This is a great way to celebrate your

family, classmate, friend, or remember a loved one. Our

hope is to have a name on every seat! For additional
