The Years 3-6 House Athletics Carnival is on this week! It will take place over 2
days:
Day 1 – Field events on Thursday 31st August at school. The 9 and 10 yrs children
will begin at 11:25 a.m. and finish at 1:05 p.m., while the 11 and 12/13 yrs children
will begin at 1:50 p.m. and finish 3:30 p.m. All children will have an earlier lunch at
1:05 p.m. and will be dismissed from school at normal time at 3:30 p.m.
Day 2 – Track events (plus Triple Jump) on Friday 1st September at the No7 Oval
near Frontline. The children will be walking from school at 12:45 p.m. to begin at
1:00 p.m. All children will have their lunch before they go and will be dismissed at
the No. 7 oval at 3:30 p.m. Because the children will be leaving the school grounds
for this day, they will need to return the permission slip that came home last week.
The aim of the 2 days is for all students to participate and have a go. We will also be
selecting students to represent our school at the Seymour District Carnival to be held
on Monday 11th September. The District event only involves Years 3-6 students.
They will be selected according to their efforts, placings and techniques performed
at our school carnival. For example, we cannot send someone to District for shot put
if their technique isn’t officially ‘legal’, even if they throw the furthest.
In each event students can tally points for their House teams. Just competing will
score points for their House team. It is imperative for their teams that all students
have a go. Parents are also welcome to come along and cheer loudly! Children have
been encouraged to wear their house colours - red, blue, green or yellow.
Good luck, Athletes!
On behalf of the school
community, we wish all of our
dads a very Happy Fathers’
Day for Sunday. We hope that
Sunday is a very restful day for
all dads. Come on mums and
kids, let’s spoil our dads!
eg. breakfast in bed, nice
presents, etc.
**REMINDER- Pucka News is a growing interest in the school and our community. You can
see each episode live at our school assemblies at 9am on Monday mornings. Everyone is
encouraged to come along and watch each episode. If you are unable to attend, you can follow
Pucka News by watching each episode on our Facebook page. **

***Have you heard your child read today? We
encourage all students to practise their reading at home
about 5 nights per week. Therefore, by now, most
students should have read at least between 135-140
nights. Well done if you have kept up!
Happy Birthday to
Jackson Dendle, Malakai
Casey, Jack McGechan,
Chayce Mackie, Clancy
Easom, Olivia Armstrong
and Wade Hansen who are
all celebrating their birthdays
this week. On behalf of the
Puckapunyal Primary School
Community, we wish them all
a very Happy Birthday!
A stall for fathers, grandads, uncles, neighbours or
friends: This Friday we will be having a stall for our
students to buy gifts for their dad, grandad, uncle,
neighbour or friend. There will be a $1, $2, $3, $4, $5
and $10 stall with wonderful gifts on sale. Participation
in this, of course is voluntary. If you have any suitable
items for the stall we would also be very grateful. Please
note, no nut products, lighters etc. Thank you for your
support.
Earn and learn: Thanks so much to our wonderful
school community for collecting the Woolworths Earn
and learn stickers. Keep it up as each one goes towards
some quality resources that benefit all our students. We
currently have collected over 6600 stickers.
Enjoy your week!!

Starting Friday - Just a reminder that from
September 1st, all students must have a hat for
their play times or any time they are outside in the
school grounds. We are a SUNSMART School

The hat must be a school hat (navy blue, wide
brimmed with school logo). School hats are
available for purchase through the school and cost
$12.
Jazmin Ramsbotham and Greyson Cannon agree that we
need to collect as many Earn and Learn stickers as possible!
On the last day of Term 3, we will have our AFL
Footy ‘Dress Up Day’. Traditionally, we have
always enjoyed our day where all students come to
school dressed in the colours of their favourite footy
team. Go the Mighty Pies!!
On Wednesday 15th November, 2017 we invite families to come to the Puckapunyal Primary
School Family Fun Day! This is an invitation to all parents of pre-school and primary school children

**Don’t forget, we have planned a 4 Day Bike
Ride meeting for teachers and parents to attend to
discuss our plans and how families can help. Please

Teachers are looking for students who are demonstrating ‘Reliability’ to be eligible for the Student of the Week
award. We encourage parents to talk to their students about our values throughout the year.
What is Reliability? At assembly this week, Year 6 student Ashby Murphy read out the meaning of Reliability.
‘Reliability means that others can depend on you and count on you to do your best to keep commitments. If your
family relies on you to feed the family pets then they are always fed without anyone having to remind you to do it.
Reliability means that you really care about doing what you said you would do.’
The School Canteen is open for Lunch Orders this
Friday. Each and every Friday students can order lunches
from the school canteen. The menu will be different each
week. Please ensure that a paper bag comes with the order.
Please indicate on the lunch bag if the money is in another
sibling’s bag (please see Term 3 menu in a recent
newsletter).
This week the menu is - Pizza Supreme or Ham and Pineapple $2.50
Chocolate/Strawberry Milk $2.00 each
Apple/Orange Juice Popper $1.50 each
No charge for tomato sauce
Each week at assembly, SRC representatives remind our
students of a few important school rules. This week,
SRC representatives, Dimitri Corocher and Milli Miller,
reminded our students of the following school rules to follow
when borrowing sports equipment from the sports shed:
-Return all of your items when you’re finished.
-Don’t play with any equipment at the front of the school.
-Treat all equipment with respect.
-Don’t leave your borrowed equipment unattended.
Please discuss these rules with your children to help ensure that
they understand.
***We can all work together to rid
the community of Head Lice. Let’s
check our heads once per week!***
**Please help if you can – Throughout each year we review
various school policies. If you would like to contribute to
reviewing our school policies please come to school to join
staff and school councillors at a policy review meeting. Our 2
planned meetings for Term 3 are – Monday 4th September
(First Aid Policy) and Monday 11th September (Medication
Policy). All meetings will be in the staffroom from 4pm.
Please come if you can spare the time.**

Defence School Transition Aide Message Back at school: I trust that everyone has had a smooth and
satisfactory beginning to the school year. Changing schools,
beginning school for the first time and even returning for another
school year can be daunting for students and parents. It is great to see
parents eager to support their children at this time and be an integral
part of their education. If you have any concerns, or just feel like a
chat about school and your child, please find me!
SWAPP Select Program
I have information about the ADF partners career assistance program
if anyone is interested.
NEW UNIFORM
We have recently had a new shipment of uniform arrive that includes
shorts, tops, tracksuit pants and hats. Some parents have been waiting
on this to arrive.
Best wishes for the week.

Each week in the newsletter, we will give families a summary of the Teaching/Learning Focus for the week.
That can help families by: being aware of what classrooms are covering; with discussion topics at the dinner table
when discussing school (eg. ‘How are you going with addition in Numeracy this week?’); helping their children study at
home, etc. Parents have indicated that this information would be very useful. We also ask families to be aware that
schools are very busy places and events can be unpredictable at times. We therefore must remain flexible. That means,
we can plan to cover certain topics at particular times and have to change them according to arising needs.
Junior School – Preps/Foundation Rooms 6 & 8 Literacy: We are learning all about the letters J and K. We are working hard on spaces between our words and writing
good sentences. We are continuing to practise Kung Fu punctuation.
Numeracy: We are revising all numbers from 1-17 and learning about halves (fractions). We are creating displays of
data using lists, tables and picture graphs.
Junior School – Year 1s Rooms 3, 4 & 8
Literacy: We are revising the letters J and K. We are revising hyphens, brackets and compound words.
Numeracy: We are learning about fractions (halves and quarters) and creating graphs.
Junior School – Year 2s Rooms 3, 4 & 10 Literacy: We are revising hyphens, brackets and compound words. We are writing narratives and learning about
colons.
Numeracy: We are Recognising and interpret common use of halves, quarters and eighths of shapes and collections.
Middle School Years 3/4 Rooms 9, 10 & 11 Literacy: We will be focusing on invitations and letter writing, as well as the VCOP components.
Numeracy: We will also be working on the four processes as well as chance experiments in Numeracy.
Senior School Years 5/6 Rooms 1 & 2 Literacy: We will be focusing on narratives, letter writing and the VCOP components.
Numeracy: We will be working on processes, mean, mode, median and tree diagrams for problem solving.

The Prince Boofhead Syndrome by Michael Carr-Gregg (Australian
Psychologist)
A FEW years ago I was standing outside my son’s school, when a four-wheel-drive pulled up and woman got out,
clutching a folder.
She stood a few metres away from me, pulled out a mobile and tapped out a text message. A few moments later a short,
skinny boy in school uniform ran up to her. “Hello Simon, here it is, darling,” the woman said, proffering the folder to the
boy.
The schoolboy, not more than 13 years of age, took one look at the folder and said loudly, “That’s the wrong one, you
stupid cow! I needed my maths folder! Now I’m up s**t creek and it’s all your fault.”
The woman looked close to tears as she stuttered, “But Simon, I thought you said bring me the English folder. I did tell
you to check your bag before you got in the car. I had to cancel an appointment to get this to you.”
Simon regarded his mother with an expression of utter contempt and said, “You are just hopeless”. No word of thanks, he
simply turned on his heels and walked away.
Up until this point, she had not even noticed that I was standing there, but now she realised that this rather unpleasant
exchange had transpired in front of an audience of one — me. I still don’t know if she knew I was a child and adolescent
psychologist, but she looked mortified and said to me apologetically, “It’s fine, really, he’s been under a lot of stress
lately.” She then returned to her SUV and drove off.
Now, as much as my day to day work brings me in touch with some pretty tricky situations and I have met some pretty
challenging young people in my time, I can think of no circumstance under which it would be acceptable for any child to
speak to an adult like that, let alone one’s loving mother.
So, what are the lessons to be learnt from this?
In the first instance, Simon’s mother should never have cancelled her appointment, in essence rewarding her son’s
forgetful behaviour. This is classic helicopter-gunship/lawnmower/snowplough parenting paradigm — swooping into
rescue a child from his own indolence or laziness or forgetfulness.
We know Year 7s can be a bit scatterbrained, but the way they learn not to be is to have natural consequences for poor
choices. Forget the book, face the consequences at school.
Second, Simon should never have been allowed to speak to his mother in such a disrespectful way. One of Dr Phil’s
favourite sayings is that “we teach people how to treat us” and Simon’s behaviour is not surprising given that his rudeness
has probably been tolerated, if not throughout his childhood, certainly in early adolescence.
In our new book, The Prince Boofhead Syndrome, Elly Robinson and I argue that the trouble with boys like Simon is that
he has been brought up to see the world as one giant, personalised, all-singing, all-dancing, 24/7 catering service —
exclusively for him.

These boys have never been challenged when they refuse to take out the garbage bins, pick up the dog poo or stack the
dishwasher; in essence to contribute to the running of the family.
When I wrote The Princess Bitchface Syndrome in 2006, this type of disrespectful behaviour seemed more common
among a small sub section of teenage girls that I worked with, but it now seems to have spilt over to boys.
And while they are not as verbal or vitriolic as their sisters, they are physically stronger and can be terrifying in their
anger, especially when it is directed towards their parents, as it so often is.
Too many of today’s parents exhaust themselves trying to make their son’s lives easy by doing things that he can do for
himself, leaping in to fix his problems, handing him every single opportunity on a plate, and being his full-time
cheerleader.
All of these are the ingredients required for a self-absorbed, lazy, entitled, spoiled brat — aka Prince Boofhead.
The child-centred parenting movement has swung too far in the opposite direction. We have become too terrified to say
no, to set limits and enforce consequences in case we damage our children’s self-esteem.
We seem to have turned away from the focus of raising civilised, polite, well-mannered boys and instead have gone to
worship at the altar of “happiness”.
We are oblivious to the fact that by not allowing our children to learn from their own stuff-ups and develop resilience and
self-respect, we are creating rudderless, disconnected, bitter and resentful boys who feel they can treat their parents (and
other authority figures, like the police) in precisely the way Simon treated his mother.
The Prince Boofhead Syndrome is the new book about teen boys by Michael Carr-Gregg and Elly Robinson
