In the last provincial budget, funding to Alberta Distance Learning was reduced from 156%

to 100%. We support this step taken by Alberta Education. The Centre for Learning@HOME offers

distance learning courses, but we have to offer these courses at 100% funding. There are many

providers of these courses now in Alberta so why is one school getting preferential treatment. Alberta

Education must take steps to change this unfair practice. We have advocated for similar funding as

ADLC, but given the financial situation in Alberta this is not feasible. Therefore, reducing the

funding of ADLC is understandable.

Please know, Alberta Education is not cutting funding to Distance Learning in Alberta.

They are reducing funding to one school, Alberta Distance Learning Centre. We still have our same

levels of funding at The Centre for Learning@HOME. We look forward to offering our courses to any

student who desires access. We are confident that allowing for greater choice in this area can only

benefit the quality of Distance Education in Alberta.

Graduation is quickly approaching. We are looking forward to celebrating this very special

occasion with our grade 12 graduates. It truly is a special day for all of us involved. There are a lot of

requirements to prepare for graduation. I strongly encourage all graduates and their families to

respond to all requests related to graduation. It does make our job easier when everyone cooperates.

We are looking forward to seeing all of our graduates and their families on June 7

Provincial Achievements exams are approaching. Please ensure arrangements are made

with our office for the writing of these tests. There was a lot of discussion before the election about

the future of these tests. To-date, there are no changes and we expect status quo for this year.

Program planning for next year has begun. All high school students should connect with

our counseling team to prepare your high school program for next year. This also applies to our grade

9 students. Please do not wait until August to review your program with one of our counselors.

Planning now can save you a lot of frustration.

We are doing several marketing sessions throughout the province. I encourage all current

families to attend a session and bring along any friends considering homeschooling. We would

welcome the opportunity to highlight our program to returning and new families.

more using targeted strategies. There are a lot of strategies available to help struggling readers. We

are expanding our efforts in the area of reading with the hope of helping all students who struggle.

program. We are currently exploring goals for grades 3-12 for the 2013-2014 school year. Parents, if

you want your child to improve in any subject discipline, it requires time and commitment.

Hello everyone,

With two months to go, summer is approaching fast. We are getting ready for exams, both PAT's

and Diplomas and so it is very busy in the office. Most of you will have exams coming up at the end

of this year so make sure you study well. Here are some tips for effective studying.

How to Study Effectively

Be Positive

In order to remember something thoroughly, you must be interested in it and think that it has

value and relevance in your life. Your attitude has much to do with whether you remember

something or not. A key factor to remembering is having a positive attitude that you will succeed.

Attention is not the same as learning, but little learning takes place without attention.

Time and Place

Study in chunks: 30 - 60 minute time periods followed by a brief break (5-10 minutes) is the most effective way to

study. Use daylight hours: an hour of studying during the day is worth two at night! Do the work that requires the

most concentration first when you have the most mental energy and alertness! Don’t wait until the last day to

study. Review your notes every night. If you don’t understand something, ask a classmate or your teacher right

away. Remove yourself from any distractions and noise. Sometimes low volume music may be effective. Set aside

a routine time to study so your mind isn’t on other things. Have a “study area” that provides you the least

distraction and most active learning environment (Not your bed!)

Notes

Rewrite all notes every night in your own words where possible. Understanding is the key to learning.

Memorizing is not effective. Make questions from your notes based on major concepts as you read through your

notes. Try to answer these questions in your own words. Use your notes as an answer key.

Recitation

Saying ideas aloud in your own words strengthens synaptic connections and gives you immediate feedback. The

more feedback you get, the faster and more accurate your learning. Get a partner or parent to quiz you from your

notes or questions created from notes. AFTER you have studied, get together in study groups to test each other.

Different questions and ideas can help you.

Visualization and Association

The brain’s quickest and probably the longest-lasting response is to images. By making a mental picture, you use

an entirely different part of the brain than you did by reading or listening. Create Webs / graphic organizers for

major concepts and the information that falls under each concept. This may help order the ideas to something easy

to understand.

Also remember to sleep and eat well before your tests, a rested mind and a full stomach help you focus on what is

important.

God Bless
