Supporting Moms and Babies Every Step of the Way

It’s a startling fact: Heart disease is the number

one killer of American women. “More women die from heart disease than the next four causes of death combined, including all cancers,” says Victoria Shin, M.D., interventional cardiologist at Torrance Memorial Medical Center.

The good news, according to the American Heart Association (AHA), is that the vast majority of these deaths are preventable. “Many studies have shown that making healthier lifestyle choices has a huge impact on lowering the incidence of heart disease in women,”says Dr. Shin. Women can help protect their hearts by starting with these important steps:

Avoid or Quit Smoking Women who smoke, or are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke, have a much higher risk of death from heart disease. “Smoking cessation is the most important step you can take, not just for your heart, but your overall health,” says Dr. Shin. Torrance Memorial offers Breathe Freely, a stop-smoking program, see page 4 for details.

Keep Active Strive for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most, but preferably all, days of the week. This doesn’t have to mean lengthy trips to the gym—gardening or a brisk walk counts, too.

Eat Healthy A heart-healthy diet is rich in fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy. Studies have also shown that reducing red meat consumption in favor of other protein sources like poultry, fish and nuts can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease. Limiting alcohol and sodium is also beneficial.

Maintain Healthy Weight Obesity is a significant risk factor for heart disease, raising blood pressure and cholesterol, and generally making the heart work harder. Even losing as little as 10 pounds can lower blood pressure, thereby reducing the risk of heart problems.

Making these lifestyle changes isn’t always easy, Dr. Shin acknowledges. Her advice? Start by setting more modest, short-term goals as well as longer-term health goals. Also, consider joining a weight-loss group or taking an exercise class. “Getting support from others can help you stay motivated,” Dr. Shin says.

Torrance Memorial offers weight-loss classes, as well as a more comprehensive heart-health program called CHANGE (Cardiovascular Health Achieved through Nutrition, Guidance and Exercise).

Regular checkups with a doctor are also important. “Women, especially those over 35, should discuss their risk factors for heart disease with their primary physician, and have their blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked regularly,” says Dr. Shin. Women with a family history of heart disease should be especially vigilant, she says.

Becoming a mother is a

joyous, but often overwhelming,

experience. The thought of caring for a fragile newborn can be equally daunting. That’s why at Torrance Memorial, care doesn’t just begin or end with your hospital stay. From prenatal support through childbirth and parenting classes, Torrance Memorial is here for you every step of the way.

For moms-to-be, knowing what to expect from the birthing and hospital experience can relieve anxiety and raise self-confidence. For those considering having a baby at Torrance Memorial, Baby Steps is a free orientation and tour of Maternity Services with nurses available to answer questions. The unit

features all private rooms and suites and is staffed by a caring, highly experienced team of nurses and other caregivers. 24-hour in-house obstetrical, neonatology and anesthesiology coverage is also immediately available for any emergency. Expectant parents have the added reassurance of knowing that Torrance Memorial’s Level III NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) is close by, if needed.

Preparing for childbirth and staying healthy throughout the pregnancy is important. Torrance Memorial offers Prepared Childbirth and refresher classes for couples as preparation for the process of labor and delivery. The Prenatal Yoga class is a great way for expectant mothers to stay in shape, practice deep breathing and relaxation techniques, improve flexibility, gain strength and prepare for the physical demands of labor.

Women who are expecting more than one baby will benefit from the Preparing for Multiples class. Grandparents and siblings also have important roles to play. Torrance Memorial’s Grandparenting and Sibling Preparation are among the most popular classes.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the health benefits of breastfeeding. Providing support and encouragement for mothers to breastfeed their babies is an important commitment for Torrance Memorial. The three-part Prenatal Breastfeeding Series provides new and expectant mothers with the tools they need for successful breastfeeding. For those who need extra support, individualized assistance by a lactation consultant is available through our Breastfeeding Clinic.

Newborn Baby Care is a two-session class designed to teach new parents how to bathe, diaper and care for their baby, as well as learn about common health and safety issues. Other popular classes include Infant/Child CPR and Infant Massage––a wonderful bonding experience for mom and baby, and especially helpful for colicky or fussy infants.

Mornings for Moms is a weekly support group that gives women the opportunity to meet with other new moms, share common concerns and build new relationships in a supportive environment. For more information on Torrance Memorial’s Maternity Services and class schedules, call 310-517-4702 or visit www.TorranceMemorial.org.
