There have been a number of happenings since May 2006 Open Day, some of them are exciting some are disappointing. However the Management and staff of EDH have again committed their selves to strive greatly to improve their standard of care and ser-vice delivered to communities, clinics and other hospitals. In short we are fighting for health with courage and hope. The main strat-egy to improve the service delivered, has been strengthening in the Human Resources of this institution, this has included the fil-ing of Middle Management posts. The team of EDH has achieved so many things and we wish to achieve much more as we are committed as a team and we hope we will able to make other im-provements that are required for us as staff and for our commu-nity.

HIV affects your white blood cells. These white blood cells protect your body from diseases. If you look at the statistics for Africa more than 8 million people are affected with HIV & Aids but in other continents there are about 2 million affected. South Africa is the only country which has more people affected with this disease. The most important rea-sons for this are: - sexual transmitted dis-ease (STD) - when the HIV mother give birth and she breast-feeds the baby without HIV testing and prophylactic treatment - sharing of blades & nee-dles etc.

DR T.M.LUCKIN—Vision 2020 Aims at eradicating preventable blind-ness by the year 2020. The aim is to try and reduce the number of people with avoidable blindness such as cata-racts, glaucoma and diabetics. EDH is aiming to do 2000 cataract operations per million population by 2010; at pre-sent we have done 1000.

The Ward 22 Councilor Mr. P. Jaca , who made special thanks on behalf of the community of his ward on the contribution of the hospital towards the better life of the people. He appealed to the community to stop stealing hospital property.

On behalf of the Dis-trict Manager Mr. Mngadi stresses the importance of using the Heath Referral system e.g. Local Clin-ics must be used for minor illnesses. He also thank EDH Man-agement and staff as he said they have seen a lot challenges at EDH.
