NEWS

THERE are already existing legal remedies in place to ad-dress the spread of fake news, Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar said Tuesday.

Andanar made this remark during the second Senate pan-el hearing on fake news seek-ing to take legal action against parties propagating fake news.

“We note that there are al-ready existing laws which may be tapped by anyone seeking redress against fake news or false information,” Andanar told the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media.

Andanar said laws such as the Revised Penal Code, as amended by Republic Act 10951, in particular, Article 154 or the Unlawful Use of Means of Publication and Unlawful Utterances; and Ar-ticle 355 or Libel by Means of Writings or Similar means.

Another landmark legisla-tion is Republic Act 10175 or Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012 which has a section on cyber libel.

He said he was cognizant of the proliferation of fake news as “one of the pressing

issues” that must be addressed. The Communications

Secretary gave three recom-mendations to help fight fake news including increasing the budget for media and informa-tion literacy education, hiring better public information of-ficers, and strengthening the efforts of the Department of Information and Communica-tions Technology (DICT) and the National Bureau of Inves-tigation (NBI) to pursue cases against purveyors of fake news.

Andanar, however, pointed out that the fight against fake news should be a collective effort of all stakeholders to educate people to discern fake from real news.

MALACAÑANG on Tuesday chal-lenged Senator Antonio Trillanes IV to file an impeachment com-

plaint against President Rodrigo Duterte if he believes the suspension of Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Arthur Carandang is an impeachable offense.

“Go ahead, file impeachment. Do it as soon as possible and we will see you in the House (of Representatives),” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in response to Trillanes’ state-ment.

On Monday, the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) formally charged and placed Carandang under a 90-day preven-

tive suspension for allegedly committing grave misconduct and dishonesty “for misuse of confidential information and disclos-ing false information” in relation to the Ombudsman’s probe on the alleged bank records of the President and his family.

Trillanes, a staunch critic of Duterte, said the OES violated Article 11, Section 5 of the 1987 Constitution, “which clearly states the independence of the Office of the Ombudsman and its Deputies.”

Roque insisted that the Office of the President’s jurisdiction over the Deputy Ombudsman is constitutional.

He said the OES will stand by its decision, adding that the Overall Deputy Ombudsman is free to seek legal remedy before any competent court.

“The OES, however, stands by its decision to formally charge and suspend Overall Deputy Ombudsman Carandang, pursuant to the President’s broad powers to discipline all non-impeach-able presidential appointees,” Roque said in a press statement.

A BLOGGER that passes on false information should be held accountable, Senator Grace Poe said Tuesday.

Poe made this remark in her opening statement at the second hearing on fake news, reminding bloggers that they are not above libel laws.

“Though we support a per-son’s right to freedom of ex-pression, once that writer de-fames the subject of his article, that writer must be held liable in accordance with our laws,” Poe said in her speech.

She said that a blogger could not just attack a person without basis, and then hide behind the skirt of free expres-sion.

“I think one must have the courage to stand by what he has written and posted pub-licly,” she added, stressing that bloggers could not claim that their posts were not subject to a journalist’s code of ethics.

During the last hearing on fake news, there was a pro-posal to regulate fake news through legislation. However, Poe and other participants ex-pressed alarm that a new law could lead to censorship.

Poe said that fake news could only be addressed by “a cocktail of solutions” particu-larly an “educated and vigilant citizenry.”

Tuesday’s hearing is meant to tackle three issues which are the extent of responsibility and accountability of bloggers and journalists in spreading misinformation, the effect of online platforms like Face-book in shaping public opin-ion and facilitating the spread of misinformation and the ac-countability of government for the use or misuse of resources in spreading disinformation or suppressing the truth.

PRESIDENTIAL Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Undersecre-tary and Spokesperson Lorraine Badoy on Tuesday apologized to Senator Manny Pacquiao for sharing on Facebook a photo of a house she claimed was owned by the senator’s mistress.

During the second Senate panel hear-ing on fake news, Badoy apologized after Pacquiao said she owed him an apology for spreading what he described as “fake news.”

It may be recalled that Badoy shared the photo on her personal Facebook ac-count on February 2016.

Badoy admitted that she owed Pac-quiao an apology but explained that she only made that post after the sena-tor made a controversial comment about same-sex unions.

“What you said regarding LGBT community really, really hurts me,” Badoy told Pacquiao.

“We do affect each other very much so

when you put hate out there, you’d better ready for that to come back,” she added, stressing that she was not saying it to ex-cuse herself.

The PCOO spokesperson said that she was “very sincere” on her apology and was trying her best to take the hate out of her post.

Pacquiao, however, asked Badoy to “correct” her post to which she agreed to do.

THE Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed criminal charges against 54 suspect-ed Maute members, including the doctor being linked to a local terror group alleg-edly behind the abduction of six persons, two of whom were beheaded in Lanao del Sur in 2016.

In a 23-page resolution dated Dec. 12, 2017 but was released to media only on Tuesday, the DOJ filed four counts of kidnapping and serious illegal detention and two counts of kidnapping and seri-ous illegal detention with murder against Dr. Russel Langi Salic and 53 other indi-viduals suspected of being members of the Maute terrorist group before Branch 11 of the Regional Trial Court of Malabang,

Lanao del Sur.Apart from Salic, three other respon-

dents have also been arrested and de-tained, namely, TJ Tagadaya Macabalang, Wendell Apostol Facturan, and Musalli Musta.

The three are detained at the Davao City Jail.

The cases stemmed from the com-plaints of Gabriel Tomatao Permitis, Alfredo Sarsalejo Cano-os, Esperanza Permitis, Adonis Antipisto Mendez, and Julito Permitis Janubas, who were all ab-ducted by the Maute group while working in a sawmill in Butig, Lanao del Sur on April 4, 2016.

Two of their co-workers identified by

the authorities as Jaymart Capangpangan and Salvador Janubas were beheaded six days after the kidnapping.

“Criminal liability exists, notwith-standing non-participation in every detail in the execution of the crime… Where conspiracy has been established, it is un-necessary to pinpoint who among the accused inflicted the fatal blow… The inaction of a respondent where he could have prevented the crime only reveal his complicity thereto,” read the resolution signed by Senior Assistant State Pros-ecutor Peter Ong, recommended approval by OIC-Senior Deputy State Prosecutor Amor L. Robles, and approved by acting Prosecutor General Jorge Catalan.

THE government is now on the offense using the strategy of defense in the case of the suspended deputy Ombuds-man.

On Tuesday Solicitor General Jose Calida defended the decision of the Office of the President to put under a 90-day preventive suspension and charge Overall Deputy Ombudsman Melchor Carandang.

Solicitor General Jose C. Calida said the President had the authority to discipline a Deputy Ombudsman.

He said “the Constitution is clear that only the Om-budsman is subject to impeachment proceedings. While silent as to the disciplinary authority over a Deputy Om-budsman, the subsequent enactment of the Ombudsman Act filled this gap and expressly granted the authority to the President,” Calida said in a statement.

The Solicitor General further stressed that the Presi-dent had the inherent power to discipline a Deputy Om-budsman, being the appointing authority.

Citing Justice Antonio Carpio’s opinion, Calida said that the independence of the Office of the Ombudsman was not the same as the independence provided to other governmental bodies, such as the Judiciary.

Calida also said Carandang was free to seek legal rem-edy in any court, noting that he was ready to defend the Office of the President.

He added that Deputy Ombudsman Carandang is free to seek redress before the competent court.

Nonetheless, Calida’s office is ready to defend the ac-tion of the Office of the President in suspending Caran-dang saying the government is confident that the Supreme Court will reverse its 2014 ruling.

In 2014, the High Court declared as unconstitutional Section 8(2) of the Ombudsman Act of 1989, which grants the president the power to remove a Deputy Ombudsman, by a vote of eight against seven (8-7).

An earlier ruling in 2012 ruled for the constitutionality of the assailed provision on an even vote of seven to seven (7-7), leading to the dismissal of the petition.

On Monday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) has for-mally charged Carandang for “grave misconduct and grave dishonesty for misuse of confidential information and dis-closing false information” on the alleged bank transactions of President Rodrigo Duterte and his family.

Roque said Carandang had violated Section 3A of Re-public 3019 “causing any undue injury to any party, includ-ing government, or giving any private party any unwar-ranted benefits, advantage of preference in the discharge of his official administrative or judicial function through manifest partiality, evident bad faith or gross inexcusable negligence.”

IN THE OFFENSETHE Senate adopted on Monday, January 22, a resolu-tion commending and honor-ing the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) for their bravery and heroism in bravely fighting and defeating the Maute-Abu Sayyaf terrorist group in Marawi City.Proposed Senate Resolution No. 401, authored by Senator Risa Hontiveros, was adopted in consideration of Proposed Senate Resolu-tion Nos. 411, 416, 418, 536 and 540 introduced by Sena-tors De Lima and Ejercito, Senate President Pimentel, and Senator Zubiri, respec-tively.

Those who were present to witness the event were 15 members of the 3rd Scout Ranger Battalion under whose sector Omarkhayam Maute and Insilon Hapilon were neutralized, signaling the end of the five-month old siege.

On behalf of the group, for-mer 8th Scout Ranger Com-pany commander Cpt Jom-mel Ray Parreno, whose unit was responsible for finishing off the two top leaders of the Maute-ASG group, thanked the people of the Senate for their support to the soldiers during the Marawi Siege. He also conveyed the gratitude of the soldiers to the senators for their role in increasing the salaries of the uniformed per-sonnel in government.

The Marawi heroes who were present were supposed to merely hand over a certificate of appreciation to one of the AFP’s civilian partners, Mr. Manny Bautista, during the Marawi siege but I brought them to the Senate for the flag raising ceremony before their breakfast date with him.

The heroes were welcomed by the Senate officials and em-ployees with loud cheers and applause, even lining up to

shake their hands and person-ally thank them. After the flag raising ceremony, Senate Sec-retary Barbo insisted that they have breakfast at the Execu-tive Lounge. It was then that the Senate officials, in particu-lar Deputy Secretary Edwin Bellen, thought that with the soldiers’ presence in the Sen-ate, it would be the best time for the senators to adopt the resolutions honoring the AFP and PNP for freeing Marawi City.

The warriors were asked to come back for the session that afternoon. When they did, lo and behold, the resolution was

already included in the Sen-ate’s Order of Business, for sponsorship by the Majority Leader Senator Sotto.

As loudly as they were cheered upon and applauded by the Senate officials and employees earlier that day, the senators warmly welcomed and thanked them as much during the plenary session that afternoon for their great service to the nation, also standing in line to shake each and every warrior’s hand, and they all walked to the rostrum to join Senate President Koko Pimentel to say cheese to the cameras for posterity.

TO start the new year, Meralco announced a decrease in elec-tricity rates for January 2018, amounting to PhP0.5260 per kWh for a typical household, thereby bringing down the overall rate from last month’s PhP9.2487 per kWh to PhP8.7227 per kWh. The rate decrease this month amounts to around PhP105 reduction in the total bill of a typical residential customer consum-ing 200kWh.

The lower January rate is mainly due to a P0.5277 per kWh reduction in the gen-eration charge. This is the second consecutive month of a decrease in overall electric-ity rates, totaling a reduction

of PhP0.9045 per kWh in the two-month span.

Lower PSAs and WESM charges bring down the gen-eration charge

Generation charge de-creased from PhP4.6045 per kWh in December to PhP4.0768 per kWh this January primarily due to lower Power Supply Agreements (PSA) and Wholesale Elec-tricity Spot Market (WESM) charges.

Charges from PSAs regis-tered a decrease of PhP0.9810 per kWh. The lower PSA charges were brought about by a reduction in capacity fees as a result of the annual recon-ciliation of outage allowances

done at the end of each year under the PSAs approved by the Energy Regulatory Com-mission (ERC). The reduction in capacity fees of generator companies represents savings immediately passed on to con-sumers by way of lower elec-tricity rates. The capacity fees from PSAs will return to nor-mal levels after the downward adjustment this month. PSAs provided 40% of Meralco’s to-tal energy requirement.

Charges from the WESM also decreased by PhP1.6943 per kWh due to lower spot prices resulting from a re-duction in power demand in the Luzon grid. The share of WESM purchases to Meral-

co’s total requirement this month was 19%.

On the other hand, charges from the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) increased by PhP0.3808 per kWh due to lower average plant dispatch. The share of IPP purchases to Meralco’s total requirement this month was at 41%.

Increase in Transmission Charge offset by other charges

Transmission charge of residential customers increased by PhP0.1168 per kWh due to higher NGCP ancillary ser-vice charges, but this was off-set as taxes and other charges went down by PhP0.1151 per

MALABON has been award-ed the most lowest crime in-cidence in Metro Manila, reg-istering a whopping 39.49% reduction in the commission of eight (8) focus crimes in 2017.

The commendation was given by the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) in a recent meeting held in Taguig City.

With the active coordina-tion of the city, under Mayor Antolin A. Oreta III, with the local Philippine National Po-lice (PNP), crimes like physi-cal injury, murder, homicide, rape, robbery, theft, carnap-ping motorcycles and motor-

ized vehicle carnapping sig-nificantly decreased from 666 in 2016 to 403 in 2017.

In said RPOC meeting at-tended by Mayors and repre-sentatives of 17 Metro Manila localities, Malabon was ac-claimed the best city with this record.

The cities of Parañaque listed 35.1%; San Juan, 34.5%; Mandaluyong, 34%; Caloocan, 28.4% with the rest following suit.

The Malabon Chief of Po-lice, Senior Supt. John Chua said police visibilities, random checkpoints and intensified anti-crime operations are keys to the achievement.

Police actions against of-fenders in 2017 resulted to 5 arrest cases due to pending warrants as well as apprehen-sion of 353 violators of City Ordinances prohibiting citi-zens from drinking liquors and being “half naked” in public places, 38 individuals violat-ing curfew regulations and 95 who committed traffic related violations.

The CCTVs, supervised 24 hours by the Central Com-mand Center at the Malabon City Hall since 2012, also preempts the commission of crimes.

Mayor Oreta also com-mended the public’s coopera-

tion in providing vital infor-mation against criminals that led to the solution of most crimes on record.

The mayor believes this is proof of the trust and confi-dence Malabonians have ac-corded the PNP and the local government unit (LGU).

The ongoing city-wide in-stallation of LED streetlights especially along previously dark thoroughfares in the city is also a good deterrent of crimes during wee hours.

THE Philippine Postal Cor-poration (PHLPost) advises the public to use the pre-scribed PHLPost boxes sold at all post offices and postal outlets nationwide.

These PHLPost boxes

are intended for mailing and sending of goods anywhere in the country and abroad.

“We would like to inform the public to use the standard PHLPost boxes in sending their packages at post office

counters to make sure that their items or goods are safe and secure”, Postmaster Gen-eral Joel L. Otarra said.

The public may choose from among the seven (7) dif-ferent ‘standard’ sizes of PHL-Post boxes available, depend-ing on the volume of the items sent by the customer.

The said boxes are made of durable materials to en-sure that all packages will be received by the addressees in good condition. The boxes provide markings for proper handling and space for the

labels.Securely wrapping a parcel

or packages ensures that the items won’t be damaged dur-ing transit.

The postal agency would like to avoid incidents of damaged parcels or packages because of improper (poor) wrapping, using weak paper materials.

Using a PHLPost box means the mailer will now easily identify what are di-mensions (sizes) in advance, making the process of sending the goods simple and fast.

Meralco reiterated that it does not earn from the pass-through charges, such as the generation and transmission charges. Oscar Abayalde and has the Department of Interior and Local Government-National Capital Region (DILG-NCR) Regional Director Maria Lourdes Agus-tin as its secretariat head and is responsible for addressing issues and concerns in maintaining peace and order in Metro Manila.

DILG Undersecretary for Peace and Order Catalino Cuy and the department’s City Directors in the region joined the meeting which also delved on policy direction and the national govern-ment’s thrust on peace and order.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila police chief director Oscar Al-bayalde has lauded Sr. Supt. Chua and the entire Malabon police station for the achievement.

“I commend Malabon CPS for the substantial decrease in their crime rate. This should serve as an inspiration for them to do better and for other stations to emulate”, said Albayalde in a statement.

VALENTINE’S DAY is meant to be a cel-ebration of love. For many people, it’s also an extravaganza of chocolate hearts and other

sweet and sugary confections. But it doesn’t have to be. When we asked five leading registered dietitians for healthy and romantic holiday tips, they had plenty to share. Read on to see some of their ideas.

BRING ON THE HEATGet saucy this Valentine’s Day with a dose of chili peppers.

According to Rachel Johnson, spokesperson for the American Heart Association, chili peppers can make all the difference to your meals and your heart. “All that spiciness means there’s plenty of vitamin C to help the immune system.” Johnson suggests adding chili peppers to tomato sauce, low-fat mayo or hummus for a healthy treat.

CHOOSE NATURALLY SWEET INGREDIENTS

Show your sweetheart you care with a healthy sweet potato side dish. They’re packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and beta carotene, plus they’re high in fiber and vitamin B-6, as well as potassium, which plays a role in decreasing blood pressure. Here’s a tip from registered dietitian Rebekah Langford: Wash and dry medium sweet potatoes and slice into 1/4-1/2” rounds. Use a medium and large heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out heart shapes. Soak them in cold water for approximately one hour to help make them crispier later. Drain potatoes and pat dry. Toss gently with olive oil, salt and pepper. Place on a cookie sheet and roast in a 400-degree Fahrenheit oven for about 30-40 minutes, flipping over halfway through, until golden brown and crisp.

INCORPORATE RED (AND NUTRITIOUS) FOODSMake the most of the bright red beet on Valentine’s Day. You can

make a swoon-worthy salad by simply adding beets to your favorite mix of greens and veggies. Using a small heart-shaped cookie cutter, make red beet hearts, suggests registered dietitian Rebekah Langford. Prepare the salad and garnish with beet hearts. Another great way to go red this Valentine’s Day is to add shredded beets to your pancake mix at breakfast time. It gives your pancakes a naturally red color and a power-packed dose of antioxidants.

GET COZY WITH COCOASnuggle up with your sweetie and a kicked-up cup of cocoa, sug-

gests registered dietitian Samantha Cassetty. Stir a generous pinch of ground cinnamon and cayenne pepper into a mug of homemade hot chocolate. Garnish with a cinnamon stick. Cinnamon not only kicks the flavor up a notch, it raises the health factor: The spice has been linked to lower total and LDL cholesterol levels, and higher HDL cholesterol levels. You can also have fun experimenting with unsweetened choco-late beyond desserts, suggests Rachel Johnson. Try mixing ground coffee, unsweetened cocoa powder and spices to make a dry rub for grilling meat or add cacao nibs to a green salad with low-fat cheese for a crunchy bite.

ENJOY SOME WINESet the mood by greeting your Valentine with a glass of red wine,

suggests registered dietitian Rene Ficek. Red wine contains resve-ratrol, the key ingredient and antioxidant that helps boost blood flow and improves circulation. As an added heart healthy bonus, these an-tioxidants also increase levels of HDL (good) cholesterol and protect against artery damage. Keep in mind: moderation is key, Ficek says.

TURN YOUR NIGHT RED HOTBright red bell peppers are a festive way to heat up a home-

cooked Valentine’s Day dinner. In addition to being a money saver, whipping up your own romantic dinner lets you add your own healthier seasonings and avoid prepackaged mixes that may contain a lot of salt, says registered dietitian Rachel Johnson. Her suggestion is to add some spice with these 39-calorie red pepper bell bites. Just remove the membrane and seeds first, then finely chop them up. Almonds and zesty lemon-pepper add flavor to this festive snack. “A little goes a long way and it’s the perfect Valentine’s appetizer.”

INDULGE A LITTLEPair almonds with a dusting of cocoa and you have the perfect

stand-in for a small box of chocolates, says registered dietitian Samantha Cassetty, nutrition director for the Good Housekeeping Research Institute. And it’s good for you, too. One recent study found that people who eat tree nuts like almonds are less likely to

be obese. Here’s how to roast them your-self: First, coat raw almonds in a little

bit of oil and then sprinkle with a mixture of unsweetened

cocoa powder, sugar, and salt. Roast

at 300 degrees Fahrenheit on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. When you’re finished, package them in a heart-shaped mint tin. You can

find them at party favor and crafts stores.

END ON A SAVORY NOTEInstead of an overindulgent

dessert on Valentine’s Day, enjoy an after-dinner cheese plate, suggests

registered dietitian Samantha Cassetty. Cheese is often touted as a heart-stopper

due to its saturated fat, but Cassetty says research has shown that when people ate the so-

called unhealthy fat in cheese, they had a lower risk of heart disease than when it came from other sources

like red meat. Cassetty suggests healthy pairings for the cheese like dried apricots, walnuts and whole grain crackers.

To really drive the Valentine’s theme home, registered dietitian Rebekah Langford uses a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut

out hearts in slices or thin pieces of cheese of your choice.

SIMPLE ROMANTIC BREAKFAST IDEABreakfast in bed is the perfect start to celebrating Valentine’s Day

with someone special. Add a romantic twist to eggs and toast with a heart-shaped cookie cutter, suggests registered dietitian Rebekah Langford. First, cut out a heart in the middle of one slice of whole wheat bread. Spray both sides of bread with your preferred oil and place into saute pan over medium heat. Flip when golden brown. Place cookie cutter back into cut-out space; crack whole egg into the heart-shaped space and season with salt & pepper. Cook until egg is set to your preference.

CRAZY IN LOVE WITH QUINOANeed a new healthy idea for your Valentine’s Day dinner? Try

quinoa, suggests registered dietitian Rachel Johnson. “This is a great source of protein and also rich in fiber. And it’s perfect on top of salads, mixed with bean and tofu, or mixed with vegetables.” When planning a Valentine’s dinner with friends, quinoa -- known for its high protein content and amino acid balance -- can be a healthy secret weapon and can serve as a great substitute for rice or other grains.

CHOOSE SURF OVER TURFSwitch it up this Valentine’s Day and make a seafood dinner,

suggests registered dietitian Rachel Johnson. Fish is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, and it’s advised to eat one serving of grilled or baked fish at least twice a week. (A serving is roughly the size of a checkbook.) Some good examples of fish to try include Alaskan wild salmon, trout and herring. In general, avoid fried fish, which is typically higher in fat, often trans fat. Season your fish with lemon juice and spices rather than cream sauces or salt.

NINE days after filing administrative charges against 21 top officials and executives of the Social Security System (SSS) Philippines, Commissioner Jose Gabriel “Pompee” La Viña, Chairman of the Social Security Commision’s Media and Communications Committee as well as the Investment Oversight committee, filed criminal charges before the Ombudsman against the same parties for Violation of Sec-tion 3 (e) and (g) of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act or R.A.3019 in the awarding of 253 media contracts totaling P145,538,659.76.

La Viña seeks the immediate preventive suspension and indictment for trial of all 21 respondents as part of his crusade to cleanse the SSS of corruption in a compaint filed last Thursday, January 25.

Among those to be charged are several top officials of the SSS, including EVP Rizadly-Capulong, the 2nd highest ranking official of the private workers pension fund, 2 SVPs and 6 VPs. Capulong had been named in two ear-lier cases filed by Commissioner La Viña, one involving anomalies in investments, particularly stock market trading, and another for multiple violations of the Procurement Law or R.A. 9184.

The present complaint alleges that top man-agers of the Public Affairs and Special Events Division, namely SVP May Catherine Ciriaco, Media Affairs Department Head Ma. Luisa P. Sebastian, and Corporate Communications Head Sonia P. Guinto, negotiated and recom-mended media services that resulted in the ex-ecution of various media contracts with various television, radio and print companies without undergoing the prescribed procurement process, which is a flagrant violation of R.A. 9184. Their acts also constitute corrupt practices under R.A. No. 3019 even if already penalized under the procurement law for they repeatedly gave pri-vate parties unwarranted benefits, advantage or preference in the discharge of their official func-

tions through manifest partiality, evident bad faith or gross inexcusable negligence.

Commissioner Pompee says that his crusade to protect the reputation, integrity and funds of the SSS has earned the ire of 21 respondents whose desperate reaction includes their framed “petition by some SSS employees for President Rodrigo Duterteto oust him from the SSS Commission,” and misleadinga few members of SSS Workers Union into believing that 2 SSS Commissioners support and are following up the “petition” in Malacañang Palace. There are also reports that rank and file employees are being pressured by their managers to sign the “petition”.

Consistent with his drive to expose corrup-tion and incompetence in the public service, Commissioner Pompee explains, “People with vested interests want me out of SSS because I’ve been fighting to protect the funds of SSS members and for ordinary Filipinos to share in the profits from the infrastructure boom.I believe that we must level the playing field for all Filipino businesses, not just the usual con-glomerates.” He urges his colleagues in the SSS, other government offices and the general pub-lic to dig deeper into the SSS issues. “We can-not tolerate corruption because the people de-mand no less. If we cannot be competent, if we cannot be corruption free, how can we protect the ordinary Filipinos?”CommssionerPompee adds.

His call seems to have been heard by the Office of the Ombudsman which is now con-ducting a parallel investigation on the alleged unlawful stock trading by some SSS officials.

With this recent development, Commis-sioner Pompee La Viña has only this to say to those who want him removed for filing cases against some corrupt SSS officials and execu-tives, “I would rather be removed from office because I did my duty to protect the 35 million members of SSS than because I did not.”

THE Philippine polo team captured a second place finish in the All Asia Cup at the VR Sports Club in Bangkok.

The Philippine squad, composed of Mikee Romero, Anthony, Adrian, and Ricardo Garcia, got its breakthrough finish after making the final for the first time ever on Sat-urday night.

Its Cinderella run, howev-er, ended up short of a “happi-ly-ever-after” finish after Thai-land showed its championship pedigree in the final.

Behind Top and Tal

Srivadhanprabha, the Thai polo team overpowered the Filipinos, 8.5-6, to take home the title.

Despite the Philippine team bowing in its first cham-pionship game appearance in the said tourney, Romero would still go home with sil-verware in his hands as he took home the MVP honors.

The Philippine polo team dedicates its runner-up finish to Romero’s son Migs, also a member of the said squad but passed away recently at a young age of 22.

IN an appearance that made the rounds both offline and online, Ron-

da Rousey showed up in the closing segment of the WWE Royal Rumble at the Wells Fargo Center in Phila-delphia on Monday (Philip-pine Time).

It was then revealed that Rousey signed a contract with WWE on a full-time basis.

In the said segment, Kanako Urai, bet-ter known as Asuka, was about to choose on which belt she would vie for after win-ning the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble match, the headliner of the said wrestling show.

But Rousey showed up and pointed at the Wrestlemania logo just behind the arena’s roof, hinting that a storyline is be-ing built up for her leading to a potential title match at the said event in New Or-leans in April.

The former UFC women’s bantam-weight champion, however, implicitly said she was not yet retiring from MMA de-spite losing her last two matches, the re-cent against Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 in Las Vegas on Dec. 31, 2016.

ALL but one of the Gilas seniors, the en-tire local college stars group of the Gilas Cadets and arguably the most-sought af-ter high school star right now, showed up in the weekly national team pool practice at the Meralco Gym in Pasig on Monday night.

Highlighting the attendees for the seniors was Calvin Abueva, who was re-moved last week from the Gilas pool for the second FIBA World Cup Qualifiers window on Feb. 22 and 25 due to three consecutive absences.

On whether Abueva will be reinstated to the pool is to be determined soon.

Kiefer Ravena, Matt Wright, Allein Maliksi, Troy Rosario, Carl Cruz, Jayson

Castro, Kevin Alas, Mac Belo, Jio Jalalon, Gabe Norwood, and RR Pogoy also par-ticipated, while Junemar Fajardo and Ja-peth Aguilar were relegated into the ob-server roles following their hard-fought game the night before.

Raymond Almazan once again missed the practice, a sign that he may have al-ready accepted his removal from the pool.

Meanwhile, Kai Sotto, the towering seven-foot-two Ateneo high school bean-pole, made his first appearance as a Gilas cadet, being the only juniors hoops player present in practice.

Also making his first appearance was FEU forward Kenneth Tuffin.

Paul Desiderio, Jeo Ambohot, Robert

Bolick, and Javee Mocon made a return to Gilas practice after missing the previous week together with Abu Tratter, CJ Perez, Arvin Tolentino, Will Gozum, Juan Go-mez de Liaño, JJay Alejandro, Matt Nieto, Thirdy Ravena, and Isaac Go.

Josh Sinclair was once again present, although in an observer’s role as he recu-perates from his knee injury, among the cadets.

For the second time, Ricci Rivero, who was not initially part of the “23 for ‘23” cadets pool, showed up.

Also paying a visit were Ola Adeogun, Chibueze Ikeh, and San Beda’s current foreign player Eugene Toba to help the Nationals in training.
