Te Washington Center is pleased to once again oer its series o presidential

campaign seminars. Te Campaign 2012 Academic Seminar Series will kick o 

 with our Inside Washington 2012 program. Tis academic seminar is an essential

resource or college students (and aculty) interested in learning more about what

goes on behind the scenes in the nation’s capital. Combining lectures, site visits,

tours and special events, it is one o the best ways to see the impact o the political

 process and learn how national leaders address important issues.

Students have the option to attend one or both weeks oered. Te program

eatures major speakers in the morning. Faculty leaders oversee small group

discussions and site visits to governmental organizations, think tanks, embassies,

etc. in the afernoons. Program activities also include a bus tour o Washington,

D.C. and a weekly evening event—a dinner, reception or other special activity.

 With the presidential primaries and caucuses

scheduled to begin in February 2012, In Pursuit o the Presidency examines how presidential hopeuls pursue the nation’s most prominent elected oce.Tis seminar a lso scrutinizes the inuential roles o national and state parties, lobbyists, pollsters, andconsultants. Campaign strategists, party ocials, and veterans o past campaigns will examine this h ighstakes race through a series o stimulating discourses,site visits, tours, briefngs and small group discussions.

 Week wo: Politics and the Media January 8–14, 2012

Politics and the Media examines the u neasy but

essential relationship between presidential candidatesand the media that oen shapes the course o  presidential campaigns. Some o America’s mostrespected political journalists, news directors, andcampaign consultants will help students understandthe intricate relationship between the media a ndcampaign politics. Similar in ormat to the previous week, the seminar also involves lectures, tours, site visits, briefngs and small group discussions.

Week One: In Pursuit of the Presidency January 2–8, 2012

Faculty Director: Ross K. Baker, Ph.D.

Proessor o Political Science, Rutgers, Te State University o New Jersey

Dr. Ross Baker, one o the nation’s most notable and oen-quoted congressional scholars, is author o House and Senate, now in its third edition. He received his Ph.D. rom the University o Pennsylvaniaand has taught at Rutgers or over thirty years. He has worked or or served as an advisor to both U.S.

Senators and Representatives, most recently in the spring o 2008 and again in 2012. He is a requentcommentator and contributor to national news organizations such as USA oday, Te New York imesand Te Washington Post.

Faculty Participation

Faculty members are invited to apply to serve asaculty leaders. I chosen they will receive a stipendand ree housing and are assigned to work with upto 15 students or the duration o the program. Tey

direct the small-group discussions and serve as advisers,acilitators, and supervisors or the participants. Teyare also responsible or providing a recommended gradeor each student. Faculty members who accompany 10or more students rom their home institution will serveas their aculty leader and receive ree housing and astipend while accompanying their students.

 Academic Eligibility, Credit and Standards

College students who are 18 years old or older andin good standing at their home institution, recent

graduates, aculty and Washington Center alumniare eligible to apply or this program. Undergraduatesmust have a Washington Center campus lia ison orcampus sponsor approve the application and receivetheir evaluation. Students are not required to receivecredit, but the program requires all students to ully participate and complete assignments, regardless o credit arrangements.

Te seminar is taught as a course, with two weeksequivalent to 3–4 credit hours (or 1–2 credits or one week). Faculty leaders complete a written evaluationand recommend a grade that is sent to each student’shome institution. Evaluation is based upon attendance,

 participation in group sessions, completion o assigned readings, quality o written assignments anddemonstrated eort to achieve established academicand proessional learning objectives commensurate with each student’s level. Actual credit and grades areawarded by a student’s home institution through eachcampus/aculty liaison. Te Washington Center does

not grant academic credit.

Proessor Emeritus o elecommunications, Ball State University

Proessor Steve Bell has a B.A. rom Central College in Iowa and an M.S. in journalism romNorthwestern University. He has an extensive career as a journalist, covering many o the nation’s majorevents, political campaigns, conventions and elections. He covered the war in Vietnam and the White

House and was the original news anchor on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” He has received severalEmmy awards, an Overseas Press Club award and a Headliner’s Award or his reporting. Proessor Bell isan active public speaker and writer a nd is oen involved in special broadcast projects.
