Teachers College, Columbia University, was founded in 1887 by philanthropist Grace Hoadley Dodge and philosopher Nicholas Murray Butler. It was envisioned not just as a place to learn teaching techniques, but as a new kind of college where students and faculty could gain a deeper understanding of how people learn – through study of subjects including educational psychology and educational sociology.

125 years later, Teachers College has grown and evolved into a diverse institution that is still blazing academic trails. We have educated approximately 100,000 individuals from around the world. Teachers College is the oldest and largest graduate school of education in the United States, and also perennially ranked among the nation’s best.

Teachers College is still a different kind of institution, with an academic mandate that goes beyond the educational professions, to the many frontiers of human performance and human potential. We educate clinical psychologists and school psychologists; physical therapists and human physiologists; music teachers and professional musicians; and change leaders and policy makers. Our academic programs have propelled graduates in every professional fi eld.

For future educators, administrators, and scholars of education, we address challenges of management through study in administration, economics, and politics; in urban education,

continuing our collaborative research with urban and suburban school systems; and as the acknowledged leader in matters of diversity in education and educational policy.

Its name notwithstanding, the College is committed to a vision of education writ large, encompassing our nine core areas of expertise: the arts, health sciences and human development, educational technology and digital media, international and transcultural education, leadership and administration, policy, psychology, special education, and teacher certifi cation and education.

While the name Teachers College refl ects a dedication to producing quality teachers, only about one-third of Teachers College students are preparing to become teachers. WHAT MAKES TEACHERS COLLEGE UNIQUE?The population at Teachers College, Columbia University, is very diverse and includes international students, scholars, and faculty from over 75 countries. The College combines a large number of part-time and full-time students who are very active in professional education circles and either commute to or live on campus. Teachers College also puts a wide range of educational resources at students’ disposal, affording them the opportunity to develop and apply skills in educational practice, research, scholarship, and policy analysis and development. In addition to the College’s own library and facilities, our students have access to the curricula and facilities of Columbia University, and our Offi ce of Career Services & Alumni Relations Department help students create a social and professional network outside of class and throughout New York City.

Beyond campus, Teachers College prides itself on the ability to integrate theory and practice in New York City and the surrounding metropolitan areas. Through our relationships with public schools, museums, and other institutions students can apply their knowledge of educational theory to real-world experience. Additionally, many of our students execute fi eld research and work with faculty to investigate front-line issues.

THE ARTSThe arts programs at Teachers College view the presence of art and music in the study of education as a vital necessity in nurturing human growth and development throughout a person’s lifespan. Courses in these programs examine the different environments in which various art and music forms reach their audiences - in private and public schools, colleges, museums, community arts centers, and hospitals.

Our distinguished faculty of scholars and practitioners guides students in our practice-based studio spaces.

Graduates go on to rewarding professions as directors of education, consultants, curriculum designers, and program managers in schools, universities, government bureaus, cultural institutions, non-profi t agencies, and museums.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY & DIGITAL MEDIAOur educational technology and digital media programs target students seeking to innovate and lead the fi eld of information and communication technologies in schools and other diverse learning communities. Each program has a unique focus, but shares common scholarly perspectives, educational ideals, and strong commitments to the improvement of society through adaption and innovations in technology.

Program curriculum culls from an extensive list of faculty members from all subject areas and interests. The programs provide a comprehensive understanding of the cultural and historical implications of new technologies on education and life, and a high priority is placed on group work, fi eldwork, and internships, as well as intensive online courses.

Prepared with the skills to purposefully select and shape the uses of new media in educational practice, graduates go on to successful careers as technology specialists in schools, software and web application designers, educators, and take on leadership positions in academic computing centers and informational services for education departments in higher education.

HEALTH SCIENCES & HUMAN DEVELOPMENTGrounded in the understanding that individual learning potential can be enhanced by overcoming physical challenges, mental health, and emotional constraints, the health sciences and human development programs are designed to prepare professionals with the specialized knowledge and experience they need to fully identify and address barriers to complete well-being.

Programs focus on the educational and clinical applications of the scientifi c understanding obtained from distinct and overlapping fi elds that include movement, neuroscience, nutrition, and language. Students receive rigorous training focused on the educational and clinical applications of specialized knowledge in our renowned neuroscience and speech pathology labs, research centers, and clinics.

Graduates of these programs go on to a variety of roles in educational settings as speech-language pathologists, exercise physiologists, researchers, evaluation specialists, nutritionists, neuropsychologists, and occupational therapists.

INTERNATIONAL & TRANSCULTURAL EDUCATIONTeachers College was the fi rst graduate institution in the United States to develop a program in comparative and international studies in education. The international and transcultural programs at the College examine complex issues of social and political processes, cultural theory, transcultural identity, sociolinguistics, and bi-culturalism.

Renowned scholarly and professional resources, libraries, language centers, and learning institutes at both Teachers College and the greater Columbia University campus provide rich and varied intellectual support and a wide range of experience within real-world and laboratory contexts.

This broad-based, integrated design prepares graduates for positions in academic research, educational policy, evaluation, and multilingual and multicultural teaching, or as consultants for businesses, government agencies, and private or public educational institutions.


LEADERSHIP & ADMINISTRATIONThe leadership and administration programs at Teachers College educate, train, and serve current and future leaders, including administrators, policy makers, researchers, psychologists, and educators from around the world. The cohort-based curriculum weaves together research and analysis skills with an academic, theoretical, and evidence-based knowledge, as well as training in the refl ective, proactive, and transformational learning that is a hallmark of the College.

Students are prospective administrators, policy makers, researchers, psychologists, and educators in public and private education, higher and post secondary education, and adult education. They also work in health administration, politics, advocacy, organizational behavior, and organizational development and change.

Graduates take on roles as leaders, managers, and administrators in a variety of organizations, serving as effective change agents and decision makers in settings such as human resource management, education, health administration, or confl ict resolution; and as educators, administrators, researchers, policy analysts, consultants, and public offi cials.

POLICYUnmatched in its breadth and depth, the policy programs at Teachers College are grounded in a range of interdisciplinary perspectives.

Students are trained in quantitative, qualitative and mixed-method approaches, and are encouraged to learn through practice within fellowships, internships, colloquia, and policy student network activities. These programs are directed by faculty who include economists, lawyers, political scientists, psychologists, and sociologists, as well as specialists in a wide range of interdisciplinary areas such as early childhood education.

Graduates hold teaching positions in universities and colleges, and administrative or research positions in a variety of settings, including foundations, government offi ces, and international agencies.

PSYCHOLOGYThe psychology programs at Teachers College prepare students to investigate and address the psychological needs of individuals, families, groups, organizations, institutions, and communities. The curricula across the programs also integrates science and evaluation into their professional training.

Students are instructed to use strategies of remediation to help others develop effective coping skills and responses to the environment. Participants of the programs develop and understanding to work with individuals of diverse ethnic, racial, cultural, and socioeconomic background. Program courses also provide rigorous training in both contemporary clinical science and intervention.

Graduates go on to fi elds in teaching, research, policy, administration, consultation, and psychotherapy. They become learning specialists and consultants, and gain positions in community agencies, educational research bureaus, and testing organizations.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONThe special education programs build upon a more than 80-year tradition of leading the fi eld of special education in policy, practice, and research for individuals with disabilities across the lifespan.

Each of the degree programs prepares teachers and specialists to succeed in diverse and inclusive environments including homes, schools, and other community settings with a range of learning needs, particularly in urban contexts. Our curriculum focuses on areas of differentiated curriculum, service delivery systems, teaching for equity and social justice, assessment and intervention, and inquiry approaches to teaching and learning. Students have extensive opportunities to construct their professional practice and collaborate with faculty in a variety of school-based and university-based research settings.

Graduates go on to assume leadership and scholarly positions at all levels of professional activity, including public and private schools, community and national service agencies, hospital and rehabilitation programs, colleges and universities, research centers, as well as local, state, and federal education agencies.

TEACHER EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONEducators from across the U.S. and around the world come to Teachers College for professional development and certifi cation. Teachers College offers over 25 programs that lead to New York State Initial Certifi cation, and several programs that culminate in professional certifi cation.

Underlying all programs is an emphasis on inquiry and teachers as seekers of knowledge and lifelong learning; curriculum and the multiple perspectives on culture, content, and context that are negotiated to meet the needs of diverse learners and social justice to ensure all students and their communities are fully supported to reach their highest potential. RESEARCH CENTERS & INSTITUTES More than any other research institution of its kind, Teachers College has led the way in increasing understanding of how people of all ages learn in all disciplines, how best to teach them what they need to know, and how to transform the fi ndings into actual curricula in classrooms and other settings.

Additionally, New York is the world’s most dynamic laboratory of policy and practice. With its long-standing commitment to research and service and all aspects of education, Teachers College has cultivated close professional relationships with numerous research facilities in the City.

• Designing advanced mathematics education for very young children• Providing diabetes education for health care professionals who help patients manage their disease• Educating high school and college students about the national debt, the federal budget defi cit and other issues related to fi scal responsibility• Training top executives at corporations and non- profi ts to lead their organizations through major and often volatile change

STUDENT ACTIVITIES & PROGRAMSTeachers College brings together graduate students from all over the world in an environment that provides a unique opportunity to establish new friendships, explore other worldviews, and enhance academic prowess. Students may choose to take advantage of a wide range of planned residence hall activities, club meetings, departmental lectures, and cultural events that take place on TC’s campus in addition to the larger Columbia campus.

Particular administrative offi ces, academic departments, research centers, and student organizations sponsor and organize on-campus activities such as the Casual Conversation Series. Those interested in getting a refresher on academic writing can utilize the Graduate Writing Center. Many students enjoy a wealth of fi tness classes and the Aquatic Center featured within the Marcellus Hartley Dodge Physical Fitness Center.

FINANCIAL AID & SCHOLARSHIP Financial Aid at Teachers College rewards academic excellence through merit-based aid and works to help supplement the cost of attendance through scholarships and grants, and through need-based aid including Federal loans and Federal Work-Study.

HOUSINGThe Offi ce of Residential Services strives to create a multicultural campus community that supports students in their academic and personal goals. Living close to the campus affords students easy access to the library, classrooms, gymnasium, and other Columbia University facilities.
