There is only one Kate in London, they say. And there is only one brand that used to build its mo-torcycles next to the River Tha-mes: Matchless. Henry Collier and his two sons founded Matchless Motorcycles in 1899. In 1907 Hen-ry’s son Charles, won the first Tou-

rist Trophy and from that moment on, their production factory right on Plumstead Road soon became a mythi-cal place for every rider. Safety must not have been a hot topic in 1920 but the Collier brothers proved to be ahe-ad of times. These two young Londoners were farseeing business-men with a vision. Before anybody else even thought about it, they opened a special department to develop leather garments for motorcyclists’ protection. Clothes that were tested by the riders for the riders. Clo-thes to be worn in speed races and in the post-war period, thanks to the development of technical fabrics, also in enduro and motocross ones. Back in those days both professional riders and amateur motorcyclist were cho-osing the Matchless brand because of its performance and elegance. Motorcycle and style. Historic recurrence is the repetition of similar events in history which bear a striking similarity and this is the case. Who said that love and business can’t get along together well? Italian entrepreneur Franco Malenotti has had a long lasting love affair with motorcycles that is still stronger than ever. In 1969 he started importing Honda motorcycles in Italy rapidly becoming the biggest European distributor of the Japanese brand. During the late 70’s Malenotti started his collaboration with Belstaff and acquired the brand in 2004. Thanks to its visionary and enterprising management, the Italian family brought Belstaff to the next level and sold it in 2012 in order to buy out the Plumstead Road’s company. Franco Malenotti, toge-ther with his two sons Michele and Manuele now control Matchless and this is where history repeats itself again. A father and his two descendants. They have already ta-ken over where the Collier’s have left, an Italian family succeed to a British one on the Matchless throne. The House of Malenotti has its roots in the movie business; Maleno, father of Franco, was a producer and in a way or another they followed his steps. It all started with Belstaff and the celebrities wearing their jackets both on and off the set of many Blockbusters. The long-stan-ding experience gained during those years in Hollywood is already bearing fruits and it can only get better. As designers, they have way more creative freedom than ever before, there are no rules and the results of the new collections are stunning. Iconic pieces with an attitude which are precious, unique, and comfortable. Winners, innovators, rebels and riders. The legend carries on.

Misano Adriatico, a small city similar to many others in that area, as Riccione or Cattolica, is located right at the Adriatic Coast. Pea-

ceful, with beautiful beaches and a lot of bigger and smaller restaurants in which you can taste the true Italy. The pasta, pizza and piadina are just few. People there enjoy an easy live, as the weather is very warm and dry for many months. It’s a popular location to enjoy the holidays with tanning, interesting night live and sightseeing. You should plan a longer stay there, as it is just a three hour drive from Florence or Venice and about four from Rome. During the warm months in summer, many Italians travel there by motorcycle or scooter. And as Mugello is called a mecca for mo-torcycle fans, located close to the coast, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, is a place to see for every fan of “Super Sic” and Valentino Rossi. For many Italians “Tifosi” the love to MotoGP means also the love to their hero “The Doctor”.

MotoGP riders couldn’t ride on Friday, as the weather wasn’t as good as it is usually in Italy. It was raining for the whole day, but

conditions went back to normal on Saturday. Loren-zo, who won the last three races, took the pole posi-tion in front of Iannone, Rossi and Marquez!On Sunday “Por Fuera” had the best start, while Valentino and Marc Marquez took a great battle for second place. Shortly after Rossi took the lead, ma-king his yellow-dressed fans madly happy, Lorenzo dropped to third. After eight laps the reigning World Champion Marquez slid out from the second place! In the end “The Doctor” took his first victory since last year’s Assen round, in front of more than 54.000 of his local “Tifosi”. Lorenzo crossed the finish line second, while Dani Pedrosa completed the podium after a race-long battle with Andrea Dovizioso. Mar-quez returned to the race and finished in 15th posi-tion, right behind the home hero Alex de Angelis.

RACE WEEK

After two seventh places scored in Brno and Silverstone, and also adding to that the sixth and fifth positions respectively in the last two

years in Misano, Stefan Bradl was expecting a strong weekend in Italy. He knew he was fast on this track since his debut in MotoGP and felt optimistic ahead of the round on one of his favourite circuits. The Ger-man rider quickly found his pace on the tricky and wet surface in Friday’s free practices, while Saturday was a different story. The sun was shining and riders could ride on dry track. Stefan was fast in the beginning of FP3, but in the end he was eleventh and had to take part in Q1. He made it into the Q2, where an unlu-cky crash right at the end made him start from tenth spot on the grid. On Sunday Bradl had a good reaction when the lights went off and after a few laps he made it to eight place. Then he lost the front in the turn 13 and luckily escaped unhurt from the crash.

“I am very disappointed because we crashed in a very good situation. The race was good from the beginning be-cause I took a good start from the fourth row. I saw that I was faster than Aleix Espargaro but it took a while to pass him. Finally I made it and managed to close the gap with the front group quickly but suddenly, in turn 13 in a left corner, I lost the front. I am very sorry because the whole Team made an excellent job this weekend especially for Lucio. We could have done a good job finishing in 5th or 6th place because our lap time was quite fast” – said Stefan after the race.

As Jorge Lo-renzo could not catch Marquez for the world title, he decided to experience something new: playing the pia-no. Many pretty girls and happy faces at Misano circu-it… even on the tarmac!

RIDE TO RAISE A CHARITY EVENT AGAINST PROSTATE CANCER

If you see a smartly and elegan-tly dressed rider on a classic mo-torcycle, don’t be afraid, he is cle-arly a distinguished gentleman! For one day per year and for the third time this year, on Septem-ber 28, in over 250 cities across the world, motorcyclists gather to rai-se money for helping to find a cure for prostate cancer. The first ever

Gentleman’s Ride, which is open to all genders, took place September 2012 with fabulous Retros, Clas-sics, Modern Classics and Vintage Bikes, Bobbers, Flat and Street Trackers and Café Racers. There are beautiful pieces to admire such as Harleys, Hondas, BMWs, MotoGuzzi and Triumph. Participants are required to dress neat, meaning suits, tuxedos, bow their ties, polish the boots, trim their beards etc., to match the vintage and old school style bikes. Inspi-red by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit, the Austra-lian Mark Hawwa was thinking about a Suit Ride in Perth. This great idea quickly took off, starting in just one city and then growing quickly into a global amazing event. The first ride in 2012 brought together over 2.500 participants and rides taking place in 64 cities. In the two years since, that number has swelled to an incredible 20.000 riders in 258 separate rides spread across 57 countries and a collected amount of money of about 1.2 Million Euro. Although the ride itself is free, participants are encouraged to raise money for prostate cancer research through personal dona-tion or sponsorships. The funds raised will go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation in the UK, USA and Au-stralia.Everybody has a strong sense of what the Ride is about. The ride and its meaning is way more impor-tant. It’s not just about spreading joy and riding, it’s about the celebration towards life and the humbled ability to join a cause that makes a difference. It’s to create the awareness of cancer for men’s health issues and funding charities. If you are into classic motorcycles, passionate on two wheels and like the thrill of the revved vintage en-gines, the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is worth checking out to meet some fellow riders who enjoy breaking the mold. This is an opportunity for sup-porting a great cause!

orn in 1986 and raised in the Australian town of Don-nybrook, Josh Sheehan managed to have his first mo-torcycle at age 14 and by the time he was 16, he was totally hooked up on riding. In 2007 he entered his first FMX competition and despite crashing out, Josh knew instantly he had the will and the skills to keep on. Still unknown to the international FMX scene, Sheehan set a further benchmark in his young career when he beca-me the first rider in the world to Ruler Flip a 450 four-stroke bike. He made his Red Bull X-Fighters debut in 2010 and after a few impressive victories on the Night of the Jumps series, Josh came into the 2011 Rome stop with a wildcard spot. He then was able to grab his first Red Bull X-Fighters podium and his first victory in the season finale in Sydney with his first-ever Double Backflip. His 2012 and 2013 seasons were marred by injury, Josh broke a vertebra in his neck and was not able to ride for most of the season. In September 2013 he got back into “competition mode” and took part in two events of the Night of the Jumps Championships. Sheehan was not able to repeat the victory he had the year before on homeland but his third place was impres-sive considering he had just got back on his motorcycle after an injury. Being on the saddle again helped him clawing back his self-confidence “I’ve been able to do Double Backflips consistently again in 2014 but I feel so scared every time. I just have to stay focused and buckle it down. It’s always better when I can do at least one in Qualifying. It’s just a mental thing, then know I can do it” There are several aspects a rider must consider when it comes to choosing what tricks to perform at a certain venue. “The altitude in Mexico City affects the bikes. The thin air makes the engines lose nearly half power and that affects our speed on the ramps. So we have to adapt our riding style”. Talking about the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour Championship he just won in South Africa, Sheehan said “I’ve just been feeling

comfortable with everything I was doing. I was feeling less stress after putting a fair bit of pressure on myself last year to do the Double Backflip. The weather during the 2014 off season was better in Australia and I had more time to just ride, train and have fun. It’s easier when you’re comfortable and having fun.” Sheehan is one of the four people in the world who has ever landed the Double Backflip trick, which is considered to be the world’s hardest and most terrifying one in freestyle mo-tocross.

How did you get into Freestyle in the first place? “I loved doing tricks on the bike when I was younger and I was always looking for jumps to try and learn new tricks. I learnt to backflip for fun in a sand quarry next to our farm and shortly afterwards there was a Freestyle competition near my home, so I entered to see how I would go with the backflip in a competition”. You’ve been riding on a Honda for a while now, how’s the feeling with the bike compared to others? “I rode Kawasaki for a few years when I was racing, but I always loved the feel of Honda. I haven’t ridden many other bikes lately so I can’t really compare. I love my Hon-das!”How difficult it is to stay focused when you have such a large cheering crowd around you? “I have a plan going into the run and the crowd really fires me up and gets me excited, which helps me perform”.Do you do any specific mental training right before the competition? “I try to always do some mental training with exercises and games, but right before the competition I just try to stay fo-cussed, relaxed and concentrate on what needs to be done in the competition”. On August 23, 2014 the atmosphere at the Union Buil-dings in Pretoria was wild and Sheehan produced a series of stunning tricks that lead him to win his first Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour Championship.What’s your plan for the future? I want to keep winning at Red Bull X-Fighters. I’d love to take out two championships in a row. I also want to learn some new tricks and keep touring with Nitro Circus. I’d like to do some car racing, rally and drifting – maybe when I finish riding”.Any upcoming special project with Red Bull? Nothing locked in as yet but I’m always looking for new ideas to do something cool so hopefully lots more special projects with Red Bull in the future.” Today, Sheehan is considered one of the freshest and biggest talents to emerge from Australia, a champion who loves to deliver adrenaline-inducing performances. “I’ve been wanting this for years, and it’s a dream come true. I really feel on top of the world”.

Nobody could expect such a drama ahead of the MotoGP race in Aragon. Sunday’s action started on a dry track, while Andrea Iannone

took the lead. Soon after, Jorge Lorenzo was in first place, ahead of Marquez (starting from pole) and Dani Pedrosa. On the second lap “CrazyJoe” crashed unhurt, while two laps later Valentino Rossi went on the gravel too. In the meantime, #93 took the lead, but had to fight hard with Lorenzo and Pedrosa. When it started to rain with only few laps to go, Aleix Espargaro was the first one to swap the bikes. Lorenzo did the same soon after, while Pedrosa crashed before the first corner. Marquez, riding more than 30 secon-ds ahead of his rivals, went on the gravel too, trying to finish with “slicks”. In the end it was Lorenzo who crossed without a mistake the finish line and has sco-red his first victory this season! Aleix Espargaro won the battle for second with Cal Crutchlow, while both Marquez and Pedrosa could pick up their bikes and finish in 13th and 14th position respectively.

RACE WEEK

Stefan Bradl came to Aragon after an unlucky race in Misano, but also having in his memory a solid fifth place scored at MotorLand in 2013. As

the Spanish track is one of his favorites, he was hoping for a good result. It all started with some difficulties in finding a proper set-up of his RC213V. With his team, the German rider wasn’t sure if he should choose the settings giving a better handling or the one improving the rear grip. After a solid ride on Saturday, Stefan in the end had to start Sunday’s race from eighth spot on the grid. When the lights went off, the former Moto2 Champion had lost one place, while he was fighting to maintain his pace. Riding fast and consistent and then swapping his bikes in a proper moment, he was in a battle for the podium finish at the end of the race! Bradl scored fourth place, gaining further confidence ahead of the three back-to-back races outside Europe.

Stefan was quite happy after the race: “Well…it was a crazy race for us. Firstly we have lost some positions at the start because our clutch was now working well. Then I was on hard rear tyre whilst the others were on soft except Marc and Dani. With the mist I had not enough confi-dence to lean because I was loosing the rear on entry so I dropped back some positions. Then it started to rain more and more and I thought to go in one lap earlier but I had many things in my head at that moment. The pit-stop was simply perfect so we could gain some positions when we changed the bike. After that, the podium was very close but I missed the final boost to go for it. Anyway in the past we had difficult races so this 4th place is very important for us especially before the over-sea races. Must thank my Team because they made an excellent job in the-se tricky conditions”.

package or the two Avintia umbrella girls. We mis-sed that funny jump from the podium. Thanks Jorge Lorenzo. But be careful!... because Marc Marquez is practising the jump as well. After the riders, even the umbrella girls adopted the air-bag system and it looks like Cal Crutchlow approves the choice.

World there we find ourselves on the brown path. The road in front of us is where we belong. The road is where men can come together, where status and social markers matter less. For those willing to learn the road teaches lessons of democracy. We can start over on the road. A new beginning always starts with the first step, on the road. Take a look in front of you, can’t you see that there are no borders? Borders are set by those who fear the most, by those who can’t control. Stones, dirt, sand, ground, as I walk this road I prove my faith in the go-odness of the human nature. The road guides me whe-re no hate resides, I’m on my way meeting the World and good things will happen. I travel while she whispers through the breeze all the strong, undisclosed and mo-ving stories about the Universe. She was there before all of us and still will be when we’ll be gone. The road is the olden storyteller who speaks the truth and sings of remarkable grace. Teach me liberty Open Road, show me how to get there because I don’t know.I must have forgot how simple life could be. Corrupt by the seediness of those who live without dreams and surrender themselves to the harshness of their empty hearts. Teach me love Open Road and I will rise again. Let me meet your people Open Road, those who live by your side, those who work on your mantle, those who were left behind. Let me be like you Open Road, ready to know everything and listen anyone because everybody’s got a story to tell. Let me ride you Open Road, my motorcycle has soft tyres that will caress you. Let me bend your corners and climb your heights Open Road. I’m like a wanderer who embraces all that he meets with confidence and cheer. There are things on this road so beautiful that words can’t tell. From dusk till dawn on our motorcycle we salute you, with clutch and throttle waving hands like never ending greetings. There couldn’t be any other way to make this journey than on the saddle, like our forefathers did. There is no other way to put it in words, whatever reason we use them for. Might be leisure, work or need, our rumbling bikes are the evolution of a neighing horse, and we are the knights, the riders in the sunlight, on the storm. I can only picture my life on a motorcycle and the World is an Open Road.

Moltrasio is a small town in the Province of Como, Italy, located about 45 ki-lometres north of Milan and the home of Tama-ra Molinaro. Born on 10 October 1997, at age 16, Tamara was, without any

doubt, the youngest female rally driver to ever sign with Red Bull. Everybody in the business knows her father Giorgio, he worked as a tuner for the glorious Jol-ly Club, the Italian racing team which competed in the World Rally Championship. She is genetically related to speed and drifting, she was born to do it. Some people struggle to find their way, their true selves but Tamara took off right away. She was three months old when she first “saw” a rally. She might not remember that day, but it’s undeniable that something stuck and the first seed was planted naturally. When she was four years old her parents took her to a Kart circuit and that was the first time she tested her skills: “Everybody was trying to set the fastest lap and follow the cleanest line but I was drifting instead. It was so much more fun”. When did you understand clearly that you wanted to be a really driver? “I’ve always been in love with machines and had this rampant attraction for whatever had an engine.” She has just graduated from school as a me-chanical engineer ”Motorcycles were my first passion.” If young girls dream of their prince charming, her dre-am was to win the Motocross Championship but then something happened. At age 11 Tamara was in Livigno, a town located in the Italian Alps, near the Swiss border, with her parents and local rally legend Gigi Galli. “He was doing a couple of hot laps on the ice track when he suddenly stopped the car next to me. Gigi opened the door and said - Ta-mara now it’s your turn” The eleven years old Molinaro didn’t have to think twi-ce and jumped right in. She instantly got hooked. Two years later she found herself again in Livigno on the ice track but with a proper rally car this time and a bit more experience. Despite her young age she was noticed by a talent scout from Red Bull, who eventually started to keep an eye on her. “I was 14 and it really was too early to even think about starting a career as a rally driver.” But then in 2013, when she turned 16, an e-mail from Red Bull appeared in her inbox. “I had goose-bumps, I couldn’t believe it was real” re-calls Tamy. “We arranged a meeting and signed a con-tract, what a glorious day.” Now she’s pushing hard but she keeps her feet on the ground. During the morning she’s the ordinary girl working in a bar, but then she turns into the fast drifting blonde. “I’m 100% focused, I know I have a long way to go. I still have to train a lot, but I’m definitely enjoying every minute of it”

Born on November 16 in the year 1892 in Castel d’Ario (near the Italian city Mantua), Tazio Nuvolari felt a huge passion to speed since he

was a very little child. He wasn’t good at school at all. He didn’t like school, but which kid does? He was much more interested in sports, which wasn’t something weird for him as he was a very active boy. Both his fa-ther Arturo and his uncle Giuseppe were bicycle racers.

The young Tazio admired especially the fellow one and always tried to be like him.Seeing his first car race at the age of 12, Nuvolari was so impressed by the speed that soon after, one of the most important moments in his live came. Can you imagine being just 13 or 14 years old and learn how to ride a motorcycle? It’s nothing strange now, as all champions start to ride as soon as they are out of nappies. But

being that young and to steal your father’s car just to drive in the moonlight? No one who doesn’t have the ga-soline in his or her veins (or even instead of blood) would ever do something like that.Tazio obtained a license for motorcycle racing quite late, at the age of 23. But before he took part in his first race, unfinished in the end, the World War I had broken out and he served in the Italian army. He was a driver of ambulances, lorries and shared the car with officers. But he drove so fast, that one day he went out of the road! He heard from the official: “Forget driving. You’re not cut out for this job”. And he wasn’t, as his love to racing was increasing day by day, and his competitive spirit was growing so fast. As soon as he started his racing career, he didn’t have to wait for so long for his first success. In 1925 he won the European Championship in the 350cc class, he was the best in the European GP. That round, in that time, was one of the most important during the sea-son and it is why the win-ner of each category was named a European Cham-pion. In the same year he got a proposal to race in the Grand Prix of cars, as he was going to replace the killed Antonio Ascari. The crash after the pro-blem with the gearbox meant he was not chosen for the team. He also had several injures as a result. Do you think it stopped him from taking part in the next motorcycle race less than two weeks later? No, it didn’t. His mechanics had to help him to lift him on the motorcycle; he was in bandages and had a special cushion strapped to his stomach. But he won that rainy race at Monza circuit!Racing on a Bianchi 350, legendary called “Freccia Ce-leste” (a light blue arrow), Nuvolari was very successful as he scored 69 victories in his moto-career. All after all he won not just the European Championship, but also twice was named Italian Champion and even obtained three International Speed records. But what was more interesting, at least at eight occasions, riding on a 350cc bike, he beat all his rivals riding on 500cc’s bikes!And even if many called Tazio the “Two Wheeler Cam-pionissimo”, he still loved cars. About 1927 he decided

to intensify his activity as a car driver and his first suc-cess came the same year. He took part in the famous Mille Miglia and finished tenth overall with the wheel of a Bianchi Tipo 20. To have more chances in scoring world records, Nuvolari started his own racing team in Mantua, the Scuderia Nuvolari. One of his first big in-ternational victories came at the Grand Prix of Tripoli, which he won just nine days after his second son’s (Al-berto) birth. The turning point for his career was in 1930, when he got a seat in the Alfa Romeo team. The debut couldn’t be better: Tazio won the 4th Mille Miglia and was the first ever driver to finish such a long and difficult race with an average of over 100 km/h! But one funny sto-ry came with that win too. Nuvolari started after his team-mate Achille Varzi and was leading the race

even if on the road he was behind Varzi. For about ten kilometers he was right at the tail of Varzi’s car, riding with his headlights turned off and with the speed of about 150 km/h! He was almost invisible in Achille’s rear-view mir-rors. What came at the end? Right before the finish in Brescia Tazio turned his lights on and overtook “the shocked” Varzi…For the next years he rode for Alfa Romeo, then for Scuderia Fer-rari, Maserati and Auto Union teams. One of his most epic wins came at the Nurburgring circuit in 1935, when driving

an Alfa Romeo P3, he beat all the dominant German cars. Many called that one as an “Impossible Victory”. As the World War II started in 1939, Nuvolari’s next race came when he was already 54 and in poor health. He never officially announced a retirement, but his last race was in 1950 at the Palermo-Montepellegrino hill climb. Three years later he died from a stroke.Nuvolari is still known as one of the best race drivers and motorcycle racers from Italy in the motorsport hi-story. A winner, a champion… “Nivola”. Addicted to the speed and races through his live. A person called by Ferdinand Porsche as “the greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future”.

One of the most common causes of a road acci-dent fatality is the casualty suffering from an anoxia - loss of oxygen supply - caused by a

blocked airway. On average, it takes less than four mi-nutes for a blocked airway to cause death. Ambulance response time targets for ‘Category A/urgent cases’ in the UK are set at ‘within eight minutes’ and in a me-tropolitan area such as London, the current target is for three quarters of responses to these cases to be within this time.The first hour of trauma is termed the “Golden Hour”. The idea is that trauma vic-tims have the best survival chance if they are in surge-ry within one hour after the accident. Qualified medical personnel are really the pe-ople who should be handling everything, but until they arrive there are things that we, untrained motorcyclists, can do to help the medical professionals before they ar-rive.Be careful, accident scenes are dangerous places and the dangers come in several ways: pay attention to these rules.- At an accident site, peo-ples’ adrenaline will be going full-blast and the most im-portant thing is for at least one person to keep calm and to think. The first thing you need to do when arriving on an accident scene is to stop, take two deep breaths to help you remain calm. - One risk is that oncoming traffic may plough into those there. It may be best to park obliquely behind the incident to fend off onco-ming traffic.- Leave on hazard lights.- If you have access to a high visibility jacket, wear it. - Protect yourself: cover exposed skin, wear gloves and a hard hat if available.- Unless people are trapped or unable to move, get them off the road and out of the way of further harm. - Get them to place warning triangles in both directions.

- Be sure that somebody called the emergency services. If not, make a very brief survey of the scene to be able to give them more information but do not delay getting help. - If the emergency services have been called, who has been called? The ambulance service is obvious. Howe-ver, the police may be required to make the area safe and the fire service may be required if there is a need to extract victims from vehicles.- A “no-smoking rule” should still be enforced. Unlea-ded petrol is far more inflammable than 4-star. Diesel

is difficult to burn without a wick. Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) is potentially explosi-ve. If an engine is still run-ning, switch off the ignition.For the safety of everyone so it is a moral duty, social and civil right of every ci-tizen, and in particular of those who use roads, cars and motorcycles, to provide relief to road casualties and to activate the emergency services and rescue. It is a civic duty to know the cor-rect procedures to follow, be prepared to deal with emergency situations and to minimize the risks due to panic. Providing help and assisting the victims of an accident in which you are involved means to promo-te respect for the lives of themselves and others and to promote safety. Here are the things that all drivers and all riders should know before they start their

journey to be ready to do their duty in case of need: - Deal with the emergency from the first occurrence to isolate and contain the event, so as not to involve the facilities and / or structures which in turn may become an additional source of danger; - Plan the actions needed to protect people; - Prevent or limit damage to the environment and pro-perty; - Provide assistance to road casualties; - Coordinate the emergency services.
