SF6 Gas

The gasThe energy distribution is an essential link in the evolution of countries. It has to use performance products implemented through processes and solutions preserving the environment.Inventec Performance Chemicals, an expert on the chemistry of high technology and on packaging of liquefied gases offers SF6, equipments and services related.

This gas is an excellent insulator. Its dielectric rigidity is 2.5 times the one of air. This electrical performance, combined with its very good stability when it is crossed by an arc (low ionization), brings it to a perfect solution for the insulation of high voltage circuit breakers. It is a stable and inert gas. It has no action against materials with which it is in contact.

The SF6 we propose complies with the requirements of international standard IEC 60376. (International Electro technical Commission).

SF6 is one of six greenhouse gases listed in the Kyoto Protocol. Its global warming potential (GWP) is 23 900 times higher than the one of CO2, making it the gas with the highest greenhouse effect on Earth.Therefore, it is particularly important to master its use correctly in order to minimize discharges to the atmosphere. We support you in all stages of handling to ensure to prevent leakage of SF6.

The application areasThe PYROSTOP, (trademark of SF6 sold by Inventec Performance Chemicals) has been used for decades in various areas such as:• protection gas of the ovens in the aluminum and magnesium foundries,• manufacture of semiconductors (helps maintain the purity of the environment against dust and oxidizing elements),• manufacture of electrical substations and high voltage switchgears, GIS, GIL• particle accelerators.

Inventec Performance Chemicals offers two qualities of PYROSTOP: a product in compliance with IEC 60376 standard and a product with a purity exceeding the standard.

Adapted PackagingThe PYROSTOP is a liquefied gas whose pressure depends on the temperature.

All our packaging for SF6 have a test pressure of 70 bar. With their tap fitted with non return device on bottles, we guarantee that the product quality in the bottle will not be affected by returns of unwanted pollutants.

All packaging belonging to customers are accepted for filling provided if they are designed to contain SF6 (mentioned on ID plate), if they have a test pressure of 70 bar, and correct testing date.

We have a large fleet of packages from 8 kg to 624 kg capacity and over 40 tons of fixed storage capacity.

MaterialsThe filling of SF6, the recovery when it is polluted or when necessary to open a compartment, the leak detection are standard operations which need a good monitoring.

In the frame of environmental protection, we offer a range of equipment which will help you to have a better handling of the gas.

Transfer machines and RecoveryDesigned and manufactured by the Dehon Group, an European specialist in SF6, or by one of its partners, the material is designed to help you to achieve all your SF6 handling operations, whether for maintenance or the end of life of your electrical equipment.

The main functions of our equipment are:

Our equipment is in compliance with European directive on pressure equipment 97/23 EC and the Machinery Directive 2006/42 EC.

The range of materials proposed by Inventec Performance Chemicals has been enlarged by additional equipment to detect leaks in your equipment, weigh and control the volumes of SF6 transferred in your facilities. Product Analysis Inventec has a laboratory specializing in the analysis of liquefied gases. To help you better control the quality of SF6 in your facilities or your storage areas, a complete analysis on a sample can be performed on request.

RecyclingInventec is involved in the environment protection within the framework of sustainable development. Inventec recovers and recycles the polluted or degraded SF6 and put it back to the specifications of IEC 60376 standard in order to allow his customers to use it again.

Control and maintenance of packagingControl and regular maintenance of your packaging are necessary operations to ensure an optimal quality of SF6 and maximum safety.The following services are provided in the maintenance workshop of Inventec: • re-testing of packaging• care operations: inerting, painting, marking, destruction ...

Design, implementation and inspection of facilitiesWith our expertise and know how in the production facilities, we are able to design and to install an extended SF6 installation in your plant, tailored to your needs. End of life equipment containing SF6We can ensure a complete recovery of your end of life HTA cells still containing SF6 gas, proceed to the emptying and the treatment of polluted SF6, and manage the destruction of the cells.

CleanupTo extend the life of your materials dedicated to recovery and transfer of SF6, we propose you the depollution of your machines.

Regulations

F-GASRegulations, F-GAS: The European Union has established a regulation (842/2006/CE) to reduce emissions of certain fluorinated greenhouse gases which have a high global warming potential (GWP). This is the case of SF6, which is listed in the Annex 1 Part 1.

This regulation lays down rules concerning the containment, use, recovery and destruction of these gases.

France has transcribed these requirements in the Environmental Code Articles 521-54 and seq. Each company with staff handling the SF6 has to ensure that these employees have been certified. This follows a training and evaluation of competence in various filed, including the prevention of emissions during the handling of SF6 and equipment related to this gas. For this purpose, to this date, in France, two companies have been approved to handle this training and certification in December 2011.

TrainingInventec Performance Chemicals, under the provisions of Part 9 of the French Labor Code concerning the organization of continuing professional development, provides training on Sulfur Hexafluoride.

Objectives : • knowledge of chemical hazards and particularly those of sulfur hexafluoride, the risks in handling and means of protection.• know the main regulations• know how to use properly the packaging

Greenway SF6

Inventec Performance Chemicals invented the first label of sustainable development of chemistry: GREENWAY

What are the objectives of Greenway? Innovative formulations, control of process and materials, from their manufacture to recycling.

Greenway means:• better control equipment appropriate and well «adjusted»• better control of discharges and promotion of their appreciation, • better knowledge of the origin of our raw materials, more and more renewable.

Greenway label is also applied for our services. For SF6 we adapt this approach to our recycling programs for our customers involved in the management of SF6 circuit breakers and high voltage transformers.

Case study:

reducing emissions of SF6Inventec Performance Chemicals made a study on the various facilities and operations linked to SF6. The use of different materials and good practice actions for connections, leak detection and other operations, allowed a significant reduction in emissions SF6.

We consider that if a customer does not use the Clip’n use, it will degas the volume of SF6 content in the hose and the dead volume contained in the tap according to the diagram below:

We consider the calculation of emissions over one year for a customer supplier of electricity which has 40 facilities in France, and performs two disconnections of the flexible per week in 45 weeks of work per year.

The client will thus avoid 348 kg of SF6 per year in the air, more than 8,000 t of CO2 equivalent (which corresponds to CO2 emissions of more than 4,400 cars a year.

The diagram below shows the use of an OEM customer, which instead uses pressure drums:

In case of an OEM customer, using mostly pressure drums, it is considered that this type of customer disconnects the barrel when it is almost entirely empty.

According to Inventec’s sales figures in 2011 a client of this type uses 50 containers per year (on site), which means 50 disconnections per year.

Assuming the same values as before, the Clip’n Use allow this client to avoid transmitting 4.8 kg SF6 per year, or 115 t of CO2 equivalent (64 cars per year).

Inventec Performance Chemicals is a finder of tailor-made cleaning solutions and helps you to determine the process.

Vapour phase processNovecTM and PromosolvTM are transparent, colourless and virtually odourless liquids intended to substitute chlorine and brominated products. In vapour phase, these products can be used alone (mono solvent process = NovecTM or PromosolvTM range) or in combination with a TopkleanMC solvent developped by Inventec (co-solvent process). t is non-flammable, non-toxic and has thus become the safest and most environmentally friendly industrial products.

These exclusive fluids do not damage the ozone layer, are stable chemically and thermally, its dieletric resistance provides to NovecTM products total inertia with the electrical equipment.

Water based processPromoclean™ products are the concentrated high performance detergents. PromocleanTM range has been especially developped for use in US bath or by spraying to clean a wide range of pollutants.

Their very low surface tension gives to PromoclanTM products outstanding cleaning properties.

Our formulations are complian with existing regulations on chemicals (such as REACH, RoHS, Fgas, contain no CMR substances = carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic)

Vacuum processOur vacuum degreasing process, or “closed process”, is related to our TopkleanTM. range.Colourless and odorless, these produts are formulated from hydrocarbons and have a very low viscosity. These are an excellent alternative to chlorine-based products as well as to other cleaners traditionally used for industrial cleaning.

Manual processFormulated for manual application, by dipping or in aerosol, Inventec range suited to manual use, meet the needs of degreasing of a wide range of materials during production or maintenance.

Applicable with a cloth or by dipping, PromocleanTM TP 186B has been especially developed for cold or hot cleaning of stubborn resins and varniches and of all kinds of industrial paint, compatible with all kinds of metals.It is free of aromatic and chlorinated compounds and of emulsifying agents and thus less dangerous for the health and more respectful of the environment than traditionally used degreasers.

The product has slow-evaporation properties which limits the impact of VOCs emissions in the global balance. Thus, PromocleanTM TP 186B substitute such fast evaporating VOC solvents as acetone.

Applicable by hand or by dipping, QuicksolvTM DEF90 have been especially developed as a specialty solvent for cold degreasing and drying of a wide range of materials.In spray,l’ELECTROFOR 132 CZ is non-flammable, dielectric to satisfy manual use required for fine spot cleaning. Moreover, it is NATO approved.

Bath monitoringRegular bath monitoring allows to detect unusually fast contamination which affects fluid efficiency and thus reduces the quality of degreasing.

When the pollution detected in the fluid justifies its replacement, Inventec Performance Chemicals provides you with a sampling kit .Our laboratory analyses the samples and draft a report.

Recovery of contaminated fluids Take back and treatment of spent solvents in safe and legal conditions by a DRIRE agreed treatment centre and referenced by ADEME.

Fluorinated solvents are regenerated and hydrocarbon solvents are incinerated.

Provision of cleaning machinesIn order to validate the cleaning process prescribed by our laboratory we can provide a cleaning machine for industrial implementation. This step allows you to become familiar with the newly implemented process, machine’s functionalities and handling as well as assess cleaning results of your parts in real time.

Notre engagement

For over 20 years, Dehon Group (160 M€, 500 employees) develops a sustainable approach of the application and process chemistry: refrigeration, electronic assembling, surface treatment, insulating foam.

The ban of CFC in 1995, 5 years prior to the expected date, led the Group to replace 70% of its margin in record time.

The reality of the application and process chemistry is not “black” or “white” products but the products more or less “grey” that we turn into “green” progressively.

Beyond existing regulations, at the present time, in our profession applied to high-technology, there are no standards which define products and services more effective to protect people’s health and environment.
