How does FUTURE: Ideas & Innovation work? You can choose from three real-world chal-lenges that are relevant to young people and set by Sky. The Next Big Idea
Technology has the power to change and improve the lives of some of the more vulnerable people in our society. For example: Sky offers ‘audio de-scription’, a programme with a narrator describing what is happening on screen; ‘live TV subtitles’ are available for those with difficulty hearing, so they can read the words that are being said onscreen; and an ‘accessible remote’ is available for people who have difficulty with movement or coordination – it is easy to grip and contains larger buttons. Can you design a piece of technology or device (electronic equipment) that can help to make your chosen group’s lives more efficient or easy in some way?

Each team will be responsible for creating their own pitch based on your chosen challenge, they will create their pitch ideas, storyboard and then film and edit their pitch ready for broadcast
Our Make, Shape, Share video tour will explain how TV is created at Sky. Students will see behind the scenes clips showing each step of the process from writing the script and filming to how we use the latest broadcast technology to edit programmes and transmit them out to people’s homes through satellite signal. We will leave the picture as is for now but will swap out in the future
Each group will be supported by a member of our team who’ll train them on the studio equipment and make sure they deliver their section of the programme in time for transmission.
We’re giving students the opportunity to get hands-on and use some cutting edge technology. All of our studios are kitted out with broadcast quality microphones and cameras that have been specially modified for use in Sky Academy Studios. We’ve also developed touch screen editing software that can be used to flick through the green screen backdrops available for your topic, drag and drop clips on to the timeline and crop them to size. All of the technology we’ve designed is intuitive, easy to use and suitable for ages 8 and up.
Once each team has finished creating their pitch and sent it for transmission then your group will see their finished piece in the transmission area and we’ll send a copy for each student to share with parents or back at school.

Swimmer Max Litchfield starts season with medals at BUCS Short Course Championships
Swimmer Max Litchfield was delighted with his performances in Sheffield as he began his racing season at the BUCS Short Course Championships with more silverware.
The 23-year-old Sky Sports Scholar was in action at Ponds Forge having just returned from a high altitude training camp in Colorado.
With the Tokyo Olympics less than two years away, Litchfield looks in great shape and form after his European silver (400m IM) and bronze (200m IM) in Glasgow in the summer.
Competing for Sheffield Hallam at the weekend, he won the 400m Individual Medley and 200m IM, was second in the 200m Freestyle, 200m Backstroke and 100m Backstroke and wrapped up the event with fourth in the 4x50m Medley Relay.
“This competition is always a great meet to start the racing year,” said Litchfield, who has also overcome a long-term back injury.
“I’ve just come back down from altitude and am in the middle of a real quality training block, so it’s the perfect opportunity to practise race skills, under pressure and have some fun doing it.
“It’s not often you get to race for your University instead of your club so it’s great to make the most of it.
“The weekend was not only a great racing opportunity but a test to make sure my shoulder could withstand the strain of racing a tough weekend once again.
Britain's Max Litchfield competes in the Men's 400m individual medley swimming qualifier at the Tollcross swimming centre during the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow.
“And 13 races later and some real quality work done, we can tick off that we are all on track!
“It wasn’t about times or medals but about the process and executing the things we have put together in training over the past few weeks, but to get some medals along the way was a nice bonus.
“It’s now back into another big three-week block of training and continue to build on the work we have done at altitude and over this past weekend and bring it all together for my target short course meet this winter.”
