System description

Principle of operationNIBE ELK 42 is an electric heater that is primarily intendedfor installation together with a heat pump for heatingbuildings.

ELK 42 contains overheat protection and contactors forexternal control of the three power groups, 6, 12 and24 kW.

The electric heater is in principle an immersion heatermounted in awater container or an electric boilerwithouta water heater.

The stainless steel electric coils and electric boiler tube aremade of stainless steel (SIS 2333) which gives a very goodservice life.

Maintenance routinesGeneralAfter installation, check with the installer that the unit isin perfect condition. Request that the installer shows youthe controls and functions so that you are fully aware ofhow the installation should work and be maintained.

OperationElectrical output is controlled externally by the heat pump. This means that the electrical output is connected anddisconnected by the additional heater.

VentingRegularly check that there is water in the system. Air canremain in the system after installation and the radiatorsand boiler should be bled again. After bleeding, the pres-sure must be checked and water topped up if necessary.

Safety valveThe heating system's safety valve must be completelysealed and not release any water. The safety valve mustbe checked regularly, about 4 times a year. Perform checksas follows:1. Open the valve.2. Check that water flows through the valve.3. Close the valve.

Reset the pressure by filling with water.

Actions in the event of freeze riskIn the event of extreme cold, nopart of the heating systemmust be switched off, there is a risk of frost damage.

If a part of the heating system is thought to be frozen, contact the installer.

If the heating system will not be used for an extendedperiod of time, the water should be drained and stepstaken to ensure that the immersion heater cannot bestarted.

Dealing with malfunctionsIn the event of a malfunction or disruption to normal operation, first check the points below:

Low room temperatureCircuit or main MCB tripped.Possible earth circuit-breaker tripped.Overheat protection 6 has deployed. If the overheatprotection has deployed, the function of the system'scirculationpumpsandvalvesmust be checked. Resettingoccurs by pressing the button on the overheat protec-tion, when the temperature has fallen below 80 °C.Circulation pump stopped.Thermostat on immersion heater (1) set too low.Air in boiler or system. The pressure is to low in the expansion vessel. The loadmonitor or someexternal control unitmayhaveblocked the power output.

NOTEWork behind panels secured by screws may only be

carried out by a qualified installation engineer.

General information for the installer

GeneralThe area of use for ELK 42 is in combination with NIBEground source and air/water heat pumps. When theheating demand is greater than the heat pump's capacity, the immersion heater connects automatically for supple-mentary heating. The electrical equipment is adapted tothe heat pump's function.

ELK 42 contains overheat protection and three contactorsto control the three power steps 6, 12 and 24 kW respect-ively. For best function thepower shouldbinary controlled, that is to say 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 42 kW.

The products that do not have an internal immersionheater canuse the emergencymode relay for this function.Ensure that the heating medium circulates through theelectric heater.

NOTEThe thermostat (35) must be adjusted so that thesystem's highest permitted temperature is not ex-ceeded. The adjustment must not be so great that it

limits the power.

The electric heater must be installed upright (see imageabove).

Free space of 500mm is required in front of the heater forservice. If this is not possible, detachable connectionsmustbe used.

Pipe installationThe pipe installation must be carried out in accordancewith applicable standards.

Circulation pumpA circulation pump must be used to ensure the overthe immersion heater. If the heating system valves canclose the circulation completely, the bypass valvemust beinstalled so that the through the electric heater doesnot stop. In closed installations an approved safety valveand pressure expansion vessel must be used.

NOTEThe pipe work must be before the electricheater is so that any contaminants not

the component parts.

Electrical installationELK 42must be installed via a circuit breakerwith aminim-um breaking gap of 3 mm.

NOTEElectrical installation and service must be carried outunder the supervision of a qualified electrician. Elec-trical installation and wiring must be carried out in

accordance with the stipulations in force.

NOTEReset the overheat protection, it may have tripped

during transport.

Power supplyThe cable for power supply must be selected for the de-sired power and connected to terminal block 9.

NOTEIn the event of any servicing all electrical suppliesmust be checked and disconnected. The immersionheater can be suppliedwith voltage from connected

heat pump.

Service

DrainingThe system is most easily drained by installing a drainagevalve at the lowest point on the pipe installation. Drainingthrough such a valve leaves a small amount of water inthe electric heater, which must therefore be drainedthrough the drain connection (71).

NOTESwitch off the electric heater before emptying.
