Section 1- Sauna Room Construction

A) Room Construction- General InformationFraming- 2" x 4", kiln dried, Douglas Fir, 16" on center.Ceiling Height- 7 feet high is the preferred ceiling height. Consult your Stearnist sauna dealer forrecommendations regarding ceiling heights over 7 feet.Insulation- R11, foil faced, fiberglass batt insulation. Face the foil toward the interior of the sauna.Drywall- Drywall is not required in most residential applications. Check with your local buildingcodes for requirements in your area.Tongue and Groove Wall Paneling- Use clear, grade A, kiln dried, tongue and groove softwood.Any lumber used on the interior of the sauna must not exceed 11% moisture content. Species such asWestern Red Cedar, Redwood, Alaska Yellow Cedar, Spruce and Aspen are suitable for use in asauna.Benches- Use matching softwood of vertical grain with 1 x 4" tops and 2" x 4" rails. Space boards 1/2" apart. Countersink and plug screws or bottom nail to prevent burning of sauna bathers.Heater Guard Rail- Use matching softwood with 2" x 2" posts and 1” x 4" rails. Guard rail shouldnot exceed the top rim of the heater.Door- Must open out and should have no latches or lock sets. All door glass requires dual pane, tempered safety glass. Minimum door size for residential applications should be 2’0" x 6’8". ADArequires a minimum 32" clear opening for commercial applications. Consult your local building codesfor additional requirements.Lights- Should be a vapor proof, wall mount type, with rough-in box mounted flush with inside wallpaneling. The light should mount no lower than 72" above the finished floor. Do not mount the lightdirectly above the sauna heater or benches. Light bulb should not exceed 75 watts.Wiring- Adhere to all local and national codes. Sauna heaters must be hard wired on a dedicatedcircuit according to the installation instructions. No plugs or pigtails should be used in the saunaheater wiring. No electrical outlets should be located within a sauna.B) Sauna Room FloorThere are several acceptable materials that are used in the sauna. Ceramic floor tile, concrete, marble, slate and vinyl are common acceptable materials, for example. When using materials that require grout between the joints, be sure to use a dark joint grout material.Dark grouts will not show the discoloration or stains from perspiration or beneath the heater.C) Heater OutputThe output of a sauna heater is matched according to the cubic volume of the sauna room. When thewalls and ceiling are covered with kiln dried, tongue and groove lumber and there is sufficient insula-tion within the wall cavity (R- 11 minimum), refer to table 1 below for sizing criteria. If the sauna has wall surfaces that are not insulated such as brick, concrete, glass or glass block, etc.,each 10 square feet of exposed wall surface causes the cubic volume of the sauna to increase by 42cubic feet. If the sauna is constructed of logs or has a thick, log wall surface, then multiply the cubicvolume of the sauna by 1.5 and select the heater based on the revised cubic volume.Table 1

D) VentilationSufficient ventilation is extremely important for the sauna. An exchange of the complete cubic volumeof air within the sauna six times per hour is standard. Inlet ventilation openings should be located nearthe floor next to the heater and on the opposite wall approximately 6 inches from the ceiling. All ventsshould be capable of opening and closing completely.E) Hygienic Conditions Within the SaunaGood hygienic standards in the sauna will make bathing a pleasant experience. It is advisable to havebathers sit on a towel while in the sauna to help prolong the life of the benches. Washing the floorperiodically will help to keep the sauna from developing an odor. Occasional washing of the walls, benches, floor, etc. with soap and water is also advisable. Wipe dust and water spots from the heaterwith a damp cloth. Only water or mild soap solutions should be used. Do not use harsh chemicalswhen cleaning the sauna.

Section 2- Installation Instructions

A) Prior to InstallationPrior to installing the heater, read this manual in its entirety. Consider the following:

- Is the heater output and type suitable for the sauna? Follow the cubic requirements found in Table 1.- Are there a sufficient number of high quality sauna rocks?- Is the supply voltage suitable for the heater? If using 208 volt, single phase, then reduce the heateroutput by 25%.- Be sure that the heater location allows for the minimum required clearances as shown in figure 5,page 9.It is absolutely necessary that the minimum clearance requirements are met for heater installa-tion. Insufficient clearances can result in a fire hazard.

B) Mounting the Heater to the Wall1. Mount the heater wall mounting rack, using the screws provided. Observe the minimum safetyclearances listed in table 1 and figure 5, page 9. Detail on the mounting rack installation is provided infigure 6, page 9. Note: Additional 2"x 4" support for the heater is required in the wall behind theheater. See figure 4 on page 9.2. Lift the heater onto the rack on the wall so that the connecting box switches are easily accessible.3. The rock guard on the top of the heater must always be fastened on the wall side of the heater. Toturn the rock guard, loosen the fastening screw and then turn it. See figure 9, page 10.

C) Installation of the Thermostat Capillary TubeBefore connecting the electrical wires to the junction box of the heater, remove the capillary tube fromthe junction box and attach it to the wall on either the left or the right side of the heater, see figure 7,page 10. Cover the capillary tube with a wooden chase piece. Take care not to kink, puncture or cut thecapillary tube when attaching the tube to the wall. If damaged, the entire thermostat must be replaced.Coil up the excess tubing and place under the heater, close to the floor. Cover the capillary bulb with theprotective metal cover by threading the bulb through the holes in the cover and mounting to the wallwith the screws provided.

D) Heater Guard RailIt is recommended that a heater guard rail be placed around the heater for the safety of the saunabathers. The minimum distances shown in figure 8 (page 10) must be observed.

E) Electrical ConnectionsThe heater may only be connected to the power supply by a licensed, certified electrician. All localand national codes must be adhered to in addition to the specifications listed in this manual.Refer to the chart in Table 2 to determine the wire size and circuit protection required. The completesauna system should be properly grounded as per National Electrical Code or as local codes require.Complete the wiring according to the appropriate wiring in figure 10, page 10.

E) Electrical Connections- (continued)See table 1, page 3, for the minimum required room volumes. Any wiring within the walls of thesauna must be rated for 90 degrees C and all copper wiring must be used. Run the wire through flexconduit from the wall to the heater and connect to the heater junction box. Note: If connection to theheater will be made at a later time, leave 3 feet of conduit, 4 to 6 inches above the finished floor.

F) Electric Heater Insulation Resistance

When performing the final inspection of the electrical installation, a “leakage” may be detected whenmeasuring the heater’s insulation resistance. The reason for this is that the insulating material of theheating elements has absorbed some moisture from the air in transport and storage. This will disap-pear after a couple of uses of the heater.Note: A Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) should not be installed on the sauna heater electricalsupply and control circuits.

G) TestingBefore testing the heater, fill the rock cavity with igneous stones provided and fasten the rock guardat the top of the heater. See section 3A, “Placement of the Rocks in the Heater”.1. After the sauna heater has been wired according to the wiring diagram as well as local and nationalcodes, turn the sauna circuit breaker on at the main electrical panel. Note: Electrician must label thesauna circuit breaker.2. The thermostat control is found on the heater. Set it at the maximum position. Set the timer at 15minutes.3. Within 5 minutes, you should be able to feel the heat being generated by the heater by holding yourhand over the heater.4. If sauna is not heating, refer to section 2H, “Troubleshooting”.5. A small amount of smoke may appear during the initial heat up. This is a protective oil on theelements and will disappear after a few minutes. Tum the sauna on for 1 hour before using for the firsttime, to eliminate smoking.

H) TroubleshootingIf the sauna does not operate after the initial installation:1. Check the breaker to be sure that it is on. Check to be sure that the breaker is the correct size.2. Make sure that a neutral wire has been included.

5

Page 6: Installation Guide and Owner’ s Manual · 2006. 7. 22. · Steamist Sauna Heaters Installation Guide and Owner’ s Manual This manual contains installation and operation instructions,

3. Check the circuit breaker in the contactor to be sure that it has not been shorted out.4. Be sure that the thermostat and timer are both in the “on” position.5. Be sure that the timer winds down. If the timer has been shorted out, the heater will not operate. If the sauna has been in operation, but the heater ceases to operate:1. Check to make sure that the breaker is on.2. Check to be sure that the timer winds down.3. Check the high limit reset button under the heater. Reset if necessary.4. Call your electrician or Stearnist for additional help.If the sauna heater operates, but the room does not heat to proper operating temperature (160-180 degrees F):1. Allow 30 minutes for adequate heat up time.2. Make sure that the sauna thermometer is located 6 inches from the ceiling and is above the saunaheater or close to it. Thermometer readings will vary with height and placement of the thermometer.3. Check for the proper wire size and breaker size.4. Check for the placement of the stones to make sure that they are loosely spaced around the ele-ments to ensure adequate airflow. Stones packed too tightly will restrict airflow and reduce heatingcapacity.5. Check for areas in the sauna that may allow heat loss. A door that is not closing completely, additional glass walls, etc.6. Is the room properly insulated?7. Is the ceiling higher than in figure 4?8. After checking all of the above, remove the rocks and check the heater elements for holes orburned areas.

11/98-2

I) Caution: Electrician or Service Person!1. Before servicing heater, control or contactor, turn off the power at the breaker!2. Open the heater junction box to make sure that the wires are tightly secured, with no loose con-nections. All wiring for the sauna heater should be 90 degree C copper wire.3. Check for burned spots or shorts in wiring of the timer or thermostat.

J) Maintenance Instructions1. Do not use any chemically treated water on the sauna rocks. Do not use spa or pool water, as itwill severely corrode your heater.2. Clean water should always be used in sauna buckets and water should be dumped out of thebucket after every use. Clean buckets and dippers occasionally, when film collects from usage. Useplastic liner in bucket to prevent water leakage.3. Scrub benches with a soft brush, using a mild soap and water solution. In commercial saunas, it isadvisable to perform maintenance at least once a week, or whatever local health codes require. Saunabathers should sit or lie on a towel to help reduce the need for maintenance.4. Remove Super Dek and wash with disinfectant about once a week. Rinse thoroughly.5. Wipe sauna heater with damp cloth to remove water spots.6. Sauna heaters require no special maintenance when properly installed by a qualified electricalcontractor. After 1 year of use, however, the rocks may need replacing if cracked or crumbled.7. It is strongly recommended that a floor is used that is easily maintained, such as concrete or tile.Carpets are not recommended in the sauna.8. In commercial saunas, a floor drain is recommended.9. When the wood becomes stained from perspiration, use a fine sandpaper to sand the benches andwalls.

10. The sauna will heat faster if the upper vent is kept in a closed position when heating. The lowervent may always be kept in the open position.11. Required warning signs should be posted according to the instructions.

Section 3- Operating Instructions

A) Placement of Stones within the HeaterThe sauna heater should not be operated unless the stone compartment in the top of the heater isfilled with the stones and the guard is in place. The sauna stones for this heater should be approximately 1- 1/2 inches to 3 -1/8 inches in diameter. The heater stones should be igneous, intended for use within this heater. Do not use stones other thanthose provided with this heater. If the stones are in poor condition- i.e. crumbled or cracked, call yourSteamist dealer to order replacements. Wash any dirt or dust off of the stones prior to placing them inthe heater. The stones should be placed in the heater over the grating, so that the stones support each other. Theweight of the stones should not lie on the sauna heater elements. Place the stones so that the air canflow freely through the heater. Fit the stones in the heater loosely; not wedged in between the heatingelements. Do not use very small stones in the heater. The stones should completely cover the heating elements. However, do not form a pile over theelements.Being a product of nature, the stones may disintegrate with use. Therefore, they should be rearrangedat least once a year or even more often if the sauna is frequently used. Replace any disintegratedstones with new ones.

B) Heating the SaunaWhen the heater is switched on for the first time, either the heater or the rocks may emit an odor.Allow the sauna to run through a few cycles, provide the sauna with adequate ventilation, and theodor will dissipate. The purpose of the sauna heater is to raise the temperature of the sauna room and the sauna stones tothe required temperature. If the heater output is suitable for the sauna room, it may take 30-60minutes to heat the sauna to the required temperature. A suitable temperature for the sauna room is150-194 degrees F.The sauna stones normally reach the required bathing temperature at the same time as the saunaroom. If the heater capacity is too great, the air in the sauna will heat very quickly, whereas thetemperature of the stones may remain insufficient and any water poured on the stones will runthrough the heater. If the heater capacity is insufficient, the room will heat very slowly.

11/98-2

C) Control Unit, Including the Timer, Thermostat and High Limit SwitchThe SMS-17, SMS-20 and SMS-30 model sauna heaters are supplied with a dual-function timer thatallows the user to “pre-set” the timer up to 8 hours in advance. The timer has a 60 minute time cycle(the large print 11011 and “1” on the dial). If you wish to use the full 60 minute time cycle, turn thetimer knob counterclockwise past the I setting on the dial. Then turn clockwise until a “click” isheard. This indicates that the timer is now engaged. The sauna will now operate for 60 minutes andshut off automatically. Note: If the time is set past the “1” on the dial, the sauna heater will notcome on until the timer counts down to the 1 hour mark.Allow your sauna.heater at least 30 minutes to heat up the room to the desired temperature. This timer has the added feature of advance settings of up to 8 hours. To use the advance setting

C) Control Unit, Including the Timer, Thermostat and High Limit Switch- (continued)feature, turn the timer counterclockwise until you reach the small numbers 1-8. Set the time clock tothe desired advance program. The sauna heater will begin the countdown to the 60 minute heat cycle. For example- if you want your heater to begin heating in 3 hours, just turn the knob counterclockwiseuntil the small 3 is reached. Your sauna will be ready for use in approximately 3 1/2 hours (allowingfor a 30 minute heat up time).Thermostat ControlThe SMS-17, SMS-20 and SMS-30 sauna heaters also come equipped with a thermostat control. Most sauna bathers will need to experiment with the thermostat control for the first few sessions inorder to determine the most suitable temperature. For the initial heat up cycle, set the thermostat atit’s maximum setting. Observe the temperature within the sauna, as indicated by a separate saunathermometer (available separately from your Steamist sauna dealer). Allow the heater 30 minutes toheat the room. If the room is too hot, just turn the knob counterclockwise and allow the room to coolto the temperature you desire. It may take a few adjustments to reach the optimal sauna temperature.High Limit SwitchEach heater is equipped with a high limit cutoff switch as a safety device. If the temperature withinthe heater exceeds the prescribed maximum, the high limit switch will cut off the power supply to theelements. In the event that the high limit switch shuts the heater down, it will then be necessary to manuallyreset the switch. The heater must be allowed to cool off prior to resetting the high limit switch. Toreset the high limit, locate the reset button on the bottom of the heater (see figure 2, page 9). If thereset button continues to trip, contact the Steamist service department.

D) Pouring the Water on the Sauna StonesThe relative humidity drops dramatically in the sauna when it is heated to operating temperature. Therefore, it is desirable to ladle small quantities of water onto the heater in order to reach a level ofhumidity that is comfortable for the sauna bathers. If the water is not quickly evaporating whenpoured onto the rocks, it indicates that the rocks have cooled and may require a few moments to re-heat to a suitable temperature. Do not pour large quantities of water onto the heater at any one time.A dipper full of water at one time is all that’s needed. Never pour chemically treated water onto thesauna heater.

E) Temperature and Humidity of the SaunaGeneral guidelines for temperature within the sauna range from approximately 150 degrees F to 194degrees F. The range of humidity varies from 10% to 30% or more. The best guide for temperatureand humidity is your own body. Adjust the temperature and humidity range according to what is mostcomfortable for you. Remember, higher temperature and humidity will greatly reduce the amount oftime you will be able to stay in the sauna. Do not exceed 30 minutes in the sauna at any one time.

F) Instructions for Sauna Bathing• Begin by taking a shower prior to entering the sauna.• Stay in the sauna only as long as you feel comfortable. The best method of sauna bathing consistsof 2 or 3 short sessions of 10 minutes or so, with a short break in between.• Do not exceed 30 minutes in the sauna at one time.• Do not force other bathers from the sauna by pouring large amounts of water on the heater at onetime.• A cool shower or cold plunge is quite invigorating after a sauna.• After completing your sauna bath, take a short break to cool down.11/98-1

F) Instructions for Sauna Bathing- (continued)• Replenish your bodily fluids with water or fruit juice.

G) Warnings• Do not place anything on the sauna heater. Towels, clothing, sauna accessories, etc. Placing any-thing on top of the sauna heater can pose a fire hazard.• The outer surface of the sauna heater is extremely hot. Bather contact with the heater can burn theskin.• A heater guard rail must always be installed to protect the sauna bather from coming into directcontact with the heater.• Do not pour large quantities of water onto the heater at one time. Use a sauna ladle to pour wateronto the heater in small quantities.• Use only tap water or distilled water on the heater. Chemically treated water will corrode the saunaheater and may produce noxious gases.• Children require supervision while in the sauna. A child’s ability to withstand sauna temperatures ismuch less than that of a healthy adult.• Handicapped individuals may require assistance while using the sauna.• Consult with your doctor regarding any health related limitations to sauna bathing.• Use caution when moving within the sauna. The floor and floor gratings can be slippery.• Do not consume alcohol or drugs prior to sauna bathing.

H) Warning PlacardsThere are two placards that are supplied with every heater. The metal “CAUTION” sign must bemounted in the wall, above the heater, in a visible place. The metal “WARNING” sign must bemounted outside the sauna, either on the door or next to it.
