Hardware Requirements

This section lists hardware requirements for the RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 release.

HAL TypeTo use the RTX Subsystem, your systemmust support one of the following HAL types:

Windows Device Manager Registry Resource MapStandard PC PC Compatible EISA/ISA HALAdvanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC ACPI Compatible EISA/ISA HALACPI Uniprocessor PC ACPI 1.0 - APIC PlatformUPACPI Multiprocessor PC ACPI 1.0 - APIC PlatformMPACPI x86-based PC ACPI x86 Platform

Supported Network AdaptersTheRTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 release provides support for a number of network adapt-ers. For themost up-to-date list, click the link titled Download theRTX Supported NetworkInterface CardsPDF file on this web site:

http://www.intervalzero.com/support.htm

Hardware ConsiderationsSome hardware configurations are not supported byRTX installations.WhenRTX candetect these unsupported configurations they are indicated with a popup error message.

Although RTX runs onmost x86 platforms, unique attributes of some processors require spe-cial consideration before selecting them as a target system.

l For a comprehensive list of approved and supported hardware, see theMicrosoft Win-dows Logo Programweb page:

http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/whql/default.mspx

l Problemswith Microsoft WinDbg on AMD Opteron Dual-core AMD64 hardware

When usingWindows versions prior toWindowsVista on AMD Opteron Dual-coreAMD64 hardware, the systemmay exhibit unstable behavior. This behavior can beseen when trying to useWindowsWinDbg to break into and step throughWindowsdrivers due to incorrect context registers. IntervalZero recommends usingWindows 7or WindowsVista as your baseOS when using one of these AMD systems.

l OnDell Latitude D420 with Core DuoU2500 CPU systems, the RTSS subsystemwillsuffer a large decrease in performance if the following conditions exist:

5

IZ-DOC-X86-0016 Hardware Requirements

l Intel® SpeedStep® is enabled.

l PreventWindows idle state is unchecked on the Hardware tab in the RTX Prop-erties control panel.

l Latency causing devices are not disabled.

l PCI express video controllers can cause jitter (large latencies) within an RTX appli-cation (3228). Workarounds for this problem are to:

l Select /BASEVIDEO in the boot.ini to use standard VGA display driver,or

l Disable all DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration in Display ControlPanel. Click the Settings tab, then Advanced, then Troubleshoot.

l TheNVIDIA GeForce 7300 LE video driver causes long latencies on Vista systemsand should be disabled (5837). The properties are:

Driver file: nvlddmkm.sysDriver version: 7.15.10.9746Date: 12.7.2006

This problem is also seen onWindows 7 systemswhich use both the NVIDIAGeForce 7300 LE card and the NVIDIA Quadro FX1700 card with properties (1220):

Driver file: nvlddmkm.sysDriver version: 8.15.11.8593Date: 05.14.2009

Note: If you disable this video driver using the RTX control panel, your displayturns black and youmust reboot. If you remove the driver using theWindowscontrol panel, no reboot is required.

l On certain Dell dual-processor systemswith the Intel® Xeon® chip sets (for example,Dell 650, Dell 670), themaximum timer delivery latency for a periodic RTX timer inDedicatedMode is doubled under intensive video activities. Investigation results showthat the high latency is inherited from the hardware.

Retired Operating System Supportl Starting with RTX 2009, IntervalZero discontinued RTX support for Windows 2000.

Microsoft Visual Studio Requirements (SDK Only)TheRTX 2011 SDK requires that you haveMicrosoft Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2008or Visual Studio 2005 installed if you wish to build or debug RTX programswith the VisualStudio IDE. Beginning with RTX 2011, IntervalZero has discontinued support for Visual Stu-dio .NET 2003.

Administrator PrivilegesAdministrator privileges are required for installing, uninstalling, and using the RTX 2011 withService Pack 1 product. If you are installing on aWindows 7 or Vista systemwith UserAccount Control activated, your application will not be run with your full permissions unlessyou choose to run them as an administrator. RTX avoids this problem by providing a UserAccount Control Override service. If you do not want to override thisWindows functionalityyou can disable it by doing following:

l During the RTX installation you will have the option to deselect the RTX User AccountControl Override Service. If you do not install, or if you disable the RTX User AccountControl Override service, non-administrative users will not be allowed to run RTSSapplications.

InstallationWarnings IZ-DOC-X86-0016

Installation Warnings

Depending upon your system configuration, youmay encounter installation warnings. Theycan be ignored, as explained below, and the installation should still proceed successfully.

l "Setup was unable to interface with the power management service. Please note thatan RTX-Compatible power configuration will not be created. See the RTX InstallationGuide for detail on the RTX Recommended Power State."

If the power management feature is not a part of your Windows 7-BasedWindowsEmbedded Standard 7 target image, then the installer will not be able to implementthe RTX Recommended Power State. This should not affect functionality as the pre-ferred power state for RTX is to have all power management features disabled.

l "Could not register type library for C:\Program Files\IntervalZero\RTX\tools\PlatformEvaluator\Cfx4032.ocx. Contact your support personnel."

On someWindowsEmbedded Standard systems, a warning could appear duringinstallation noting that the ActiveX control used for PlatformEvaluator could not be reg-istered. This warning can be avoided by de-selecting the PlatformEvaluator featurefrom the CustomSetup selections or it can be ignored.

l [Operating System] - RTX Dedicated

Note: TheRTX Properties control panel will not provide completely accurate informationuntil you reboot your system.

Modifications to the Boot ConfigurationOnmultiprocessor (MP) systems, the RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 installation processmodifies the boot configuration to contain an additional RTX Dedicated option. It does thisby first checking to see how many processors are known to the operating system. If it detectsmore than one processor, it creates a new boot configuration for RTX Dedicated, based onthe current configuration.

l If the installation determines that processor clustering is enabled (either because therearemore than eight processors, or because a systemwith eight or fewer processorshas hardware enforced clustering) then an initial dedicated configuration will assignfour processors (themaximumallowable) toWindows and the rest to RTX.

l If the installation determines that more than one processor is present in the system, but clustering is not enabled, then an initial dedicated configuration will assign oneprocessor to RTX and the remaining processors toWindows.

On boot up, youmust select theMicrosoft [Windows Version] - RTX Dedicated con-figuration. For example,Microsoft WindowsXP Professional - RTX Dedicated. If you bootinto another configuration and attempt to use RTX, you will encounter a popup warning thatRTX is not configured for the current configuration.

The boot configurationmodifications that occur depend upon the type of operating systemthat you are running (Windows 7, Vista or XP) and the state of the current boot configuration.

On a uniprocessor system, the only valid configuration is Shared, with 1 RTSS Processorand 1 RTX processor.

13

IZ-DOC-X86-0016 Installing RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1

On amultiprocessor system without clustering, Shared or Dedicatedmay be specified. If using a shared configuration, there can only be 1 RTSS processor. The number ofWin-dows processors can be anywhere between 1 and the number of cores on the system. InDedicatedmode, the number ofWindows processors and RTSS processorsmust notexceed the number of cores on the system. RTSS processorsmust not exceed the numberlicensed.

On amultiprocessor machine with clustering, only Dedicatedmode is supported. Thenumber ofWindows processorsmust be between 1 and 4. SinceWindows and RTSS can’tshare a cluster, the number of RTSS processors cannot exceed the total number of proc-essorsminus 4. RTSS processorsmust not exceed the number licensed.

Notes:

l  RTX configuration is setup via the RTX Control Panel or RTX PropertiesAPI andmust not bemodified or removed.

l When upgrading fromRTX 2009, an extra boot configuration linemay becreated.

IZ-DOC-X86-0016 Appendix A: Licensing

Appendix A: Licensing

When a purchase order is processed, a Purchase Authentication Code (PAC) is assigned toeach product license purchase. The list of PACs is then sent in an email that describes howto generate your per-machine license key from the IntervalZeroWeb site.

During the installation of a per-machine RTX license, youmust have a connection to ourWeb site to generate a license key specific to the product Purchase Authentication Code(PAC) andmachine.

Site/OEM licensing is to be used by companies that distribute IntervalZero software bundledwith their own software, or those who purchase a site license for their organization. Instal-lation via site/OEM licensing does not require an Internet connection to the IntervalZero web-site.

The following section discusses this product licensingmethodology.

Key RetrievalInstalling RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 with a per-machine license requires three pieces ofinformation:

Purchase Authentication Code (PAC) - Provided by IntervalZero after an order is proc-essed. The PAC indicates that a product license has been purchased. It serves as a tokenassociated with each product license purchase.

Machine Information - Generated at the time of installation by the product installation, based on system information.

License Key - Machine-specific license key derived from the Purchase Authentication Codeand the system specificmachine information. The license key is generated for you by Inter-valZero.

The RTX per-machine license key can be obtained from IntervalZero in two ways:

l Automatic License KeyGeneration

or

l Manual LicenseGeneration

Automatic License Key GenerationIf the target system is connected to the Internet, then automatic key generation is possible. The product installation extractsmachine information and automatically accesses the Inter-valZeroWeb site to get the License Key.

20

Appendix A: Licensing IZ-DOC-X86-0016

You are prompted for your contact information and the Purchase Authentication Code at theIntervalZeroWeb site. The license key is derived from the Purchase Authentication Code. This per-machine license key is then used to complete the installation of the RTX 2011 withService Pack 1 product.

You will also receive a copy of the License Key transaction in an e-mail containing your con-tact information, Purchase Authentication Code, themachine information, and the LicenseKey. Save this information as it may be needed if the product is reinstalled or relocated.

Manual License Key GenerationIf the system is not connected to the Internet, automatic key generation is not possible andkey generationmust be donemanually. The product installation extractsmachine infor-mation and displays the information that will be required to generate a license key. Youmustgo to the following IntervalZero web site:

l For a purchased edition, license key generation can be done at:

https://Licensing.IntervalZero.com/Licensing.aspx

l For an evaluation edition, license key generation can be done at:

https://Licensing.IntervalZero.com/EvalLicensing.aspx

When prompted, enter the requested Purchase Authentication Code, Machine ID and EmailAddress. You will receive the License Key in a browser window; you are also sent an e-maillisting your contact information, Purchase Authentication Code, machine information and theLicense Key. The License Key can then be enteredmanually during the product installation.

Product RelocationIf youmust move the product installation to another system for any reason (for example, replacing a development system, amachine is unavailable because it needs repair, and soon), youmay relocate your software by generating a replacement License Key. To request a"Replacement License" youmust contact IntervalZero Sales.

IZ-DOC-X86-0016 Appendix B: SystemModificationsDuring Installation

Appendix B: System Modifications DuringInstallation

TheRTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 installation process performs several systemmod-ifications. This section describes themodifications that aremade and why they are nec-essary.

RTX-Recommended Power State on MachinesRTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 does not support Windows 7 or Vista hibernation or hybridsleep. These featuresmust be disabled to provide real-time performance. To facilitate thisprocess, the RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 installer creates and enables a new power stateon your machine (“RTX-Recommended”) with the proper settings. See the next two topicsfor details.

Before creating and enabling the RTX-recommended power state, the installer clones yourmachine’s existing power state. During an uninstall, the RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1installer reactivates the original power state and deletes the RTX-Recommended state.

RTX-Recommended Basic SettingsWhen using RTX 2011 with Service Pack 1 it is recommended that power management isset such that the display/monitor is never turned off and the computer is never put to sleep/hi-bernate.

RTX-Recommended Advanced SettingsCategory SettingsHard disk Turn off hard disk after = NeverSleep Sleep After = Never

Allow hybrid sleep = OffHibernate after = Never

PCI Express Link State Power Management = OffProcessor power management Minimumprocessor state = 100%

Maximumprocessor state = 100%

On laptops, both AC and DC behaviors are set for all of the RTX-Recommended Basic andRTX-Recommended Advanced settings.

To view a power state’s settings:

1. From theStartmenu, chooseControl Panel.

2. ClickSystem and Maintenance (for Windows 7, clickHardware and Sound) andthen clickPower Options.
