Refer to the Mechanical andElectrical sections of this manualfor detailed instructions.

• Locate and maintain the looseparts such as, isolators, bulbwells, temperature sensors, flow sensors or other factory-ordered field-installed options,as required. Loose parts arelocated in the starter panel ifequipped with a unit-mountedstarter. If not equipped with aunit-mounted starter, looseparts are shipped in the motorjunction box.

• Install the unit on a foundationwith flat support surfaces, levelwithin 1/4" (6 mm) and ofsufficient strength and mass tosupport the chiller operatingweight. Place the manufacturer-supplied isolation-padassemblies under the unit.

• Install the unit per theinstructions outlined in theMechanical Installation section.

• Complete all water piping andelectrical connections.

Note: Field piping must bearranged and supported toavoid stress on the equipment. It is strongly recommendedthat the piping contractorprovide at least 3 feet (914 mm)of clearance between the pre-installation piping and theplanned location of the unit. This will allow for the proper fitupon arrival of the unit at theinstallation site. All necessarypiping adjustments can bemade at that time.

• Where specified, supply andinstall valves in the waterpiping, upstream anddownstream of the evaporatorand condenser water boxes, inorder to isolate the shells formaintenance and to balanceand trim the system.

• Supply and install flowswitches or equivalent devicesin both the chilled-water pipingand the condenser-waterpiping. Interlock each switchwith the proper pump starter, toensure that the unit can onlyoperate when water flow isestablished.

Note: reference graphs 1-16 inthe Installation Mechanicalsection for proper water flow.

• Supply and install taps forthermometers and a pressuregauge manifold in the waterpiping, adjacent to the inlet andoutlet connections of both theevaporator and the condenser.

• Supply and install drain valveson each water box.

• Supply and install vent cockson each water box.

• Where specified, supply andinstall strainers ahead of allpumps and automaticmodulating valves.

• Supply and install refrigerantpressure-relief piping from thepressure-relief valve to theatmosphere.

• If necessary, supply enoughHFC-134a refrigerant (1 pound= .45 kg) and dry nitrogen (75psig = 517 kPa maximum) forleak testing.

• Evacuate the unit to less than500 microns (0.5 mm Hg) oraccording to local code.

• Charge with refrigerant 134a.

• Go over the pre-commissioningcheck sheet and ensure that allitems have been completed.

• Start the unit under thesupervision of a qualifiedservice technician.

Location Requirements

Noise Considerations

• Locate the unit away fromsound-sensitive areas.

• Install the isolation pads orisolation springs under theunit.

• Use rubber boot-type isolatorsfor all water piping at the unit.

• Use flexible electrical conduitfor final connection to the UPC.

Note: Consult an acousticalengineer for critical applications.

Foundation

Provide rigid, non-warpingmounting pads or a concretefoundation of sufficient strengthand mass to support the chilleroperating weight (includingcompleted piping and fulloperating charges of refrigerant, oil and water).

Storage

If the chiller is to be stored for atleast one month prior toinstallation, observe thefollowing precautions:

• Do not remove the protectivecoverings from the electricalpanel.

• Store the chiller in a dry,vibration-free, secure area.

• At least every three months, attach a gauge to the servicevalve and manually check thepressure of dry nitrogen in therefrigerant circuit. If thepressure is below 5 psig (34kPa) at 70°F (20°C), call aqualified service organizationand the appropriate Trane salesoffice.

After the chiller is in place, levelthe chiller within 1/4" (6 mm)over its length and width.

Trane is not responsible forequipment problems resultingfrom an improperly designed orconstructed foundation.

Vibration Eliminators

• Use rubber boot-type isolatorsfor all water piping at the unit.

• Use flexible electrical conduitfor final connection to the UPC.

• Isolate all pipe hangers and besure they are not supported bymain structural beams thatcould introduce vibration intooccupied spaces.

• Make sure that the piping doesnot put additional stress on theunit.

Note: Do not use metal braided-type eliminators on the waterpiping. Metal braidedeliminators are not effective atthe frequencies at which the unitwill operate.

Chiller Isolation

To minimize sound and vibrationtransmission through thebuilding structure, and to assureproper weight distribution overthe mounting surface, installisolation pads or spring isolatorsunder the chiller feet.

Note: Isolation pads areprovided with each chiller unlessspring isolators are specified onthe sales order.

Specific isolator loading data isprovided in the until submittalpackage. Also refer to Table 10. Ifnecessary, contact your localTrane sales office for furtherinformation.

Isolation Pads

When the unit is ready for finalplacement, position isolationpads end-to-end under the fulllength of the chiller leg. Thepads measure 6" x 18" (152 x 457mm). See Figure 6. No gapsshould be present betweenpads.

Remember that the chiller mustbe level within 1/4" (6 mm) overits length and width after it islowered onto the isolation pads.In addition, all piping connectedto the chiller must be properlyisolated and supported so that itdoes not place any stress on theunit.

Spring Isolators

Spring isolators should beconsidered whenever chillerinstallation is planned for anupper-story location. Springisolator selection and placementinformation is presented inFigure 7 and Figure 8.

Note: Three types of springisolators, shown in Tables 11-13are used. Each type has its ownmaximum loadingcharacteristics.

Spring isolators are typicallyshipped assembled and readyfor installation. To install andadjust the isolators properly, follow the instructions given.

Note: Do not adjust the isolatorsuntil the chiller is piped andcharged with refrigerant andwater.

1. Position the spring isolatorsunder the chiller as shown inFigure 7 and Figure 9. Makesure that each isolator iscentered in relation to thetube sheet.

2. Set isolators on the sub-base;shim or grout them asnecessary to provide a flat, level surface as the sameelevation for all mountings. Besure to support the fullunderside of the isolator baseplate; no not straddle gaps orsmall shims.

3. If required, bolt the isolatorsto the floor through the slotsprovided, or cement the pads.

Note: fastening the isolatorsto the floor is not necessaryunless specified.

4. If the chiller must be fastenedto the isolators, insert capscrews through the chillerbase and into the holestapped in the upper housingof each isolator. Do not allowthe screws to protrude belowthe underside of the isolatorupper housing. An alternativemethod of fastening the chillerto the isolators is to cementthe neoprene pads.

5. Set the chiller on the isolators;refer to the "Rigging" sectionfor lifting instructions.

The weight of the chiller willforce the upper housing ofeach isolator down, perhapscausing it to rest on theisolator's lower housing.Figure 9 illustrates springisolator construction.

Figure 6. Isolation pad

6. Check the clearance on eachisolator. If this dimension isless than 1/4" (6 mm) on anyisolator, use a wrench to turnthe adjusting bolt onecomplete revolution upward.

Repeat this operation until a1/4" (6 mm) clearance isobtained at all isolators.

7. After the minimum requiredclearance is obtained on eachof the isolators, level thechiller by turning the adjustingbolt on each of the isolatorson the low side of the unit. Besure to work from one isolatorto the next.

Remember that the chillermust be level to within 1/4" (6mm) over its length and widthand that clearance of eachisolator must be 1/4" (6 mm).

Refrigerant Pressure-ReliefValve Venting

 WARNING

Possible refrigerantasphyxiation!

Relief valve venting must bevented outdoors. Refrigerant isheavier than air and willdisplace available oxygen tobreathe, causing asphyxiation orother health risks. Each chilleror Multiple chillers must havetheir own separate relief valvesand vent piping. Consult localregulations for any special relief-line requirements. Failure tovent relief valves outdoors couldresult in death and seriousinjury.

Note: Vent pipe size mustconform to the ANSI/ASHRAEStandard 15 for vent pipe sizing. All country, federal, state, andlocal codes take precedence overany suggestions stated in thismanual.

All relief valve venting is theresponsibility of the installingcontractor.

All CVGF units use evaporatorand condenser pressure-reliefvalves that must be vented tothe outside of the building.

Relief valve connection sizes andlocations are shown in the unitsubmittals. Refer to local codesfor relief valve vent line sizinginformation.

CAUTION

Do not exceed vent piping codespecifications. Failure to heedspecifications could result incapacity reduction, unit damage, and relief valve damage.

After the relief valve has opened,it will reclose when pressure isreduced to a safe level.

Note: Relief valves tend to leak ifthey have opened and must bereplaced.

Thermal Insulation

All CVGF units are available withoptional factory installedthermal insulation. If the unit isnot factory insulated, installinsulation over the areas withdesignated dotted lines in Figure13. Refer to Table 14 for typesand quantities of insulationrequired. All CVGF units comefrom the factory with oil sumpinsulation.

Notes: Refrigerant chargingvalves, water temperaturesensors, and drain and ventconnections, when insulated, must remain accessible forservice.

Use only water-base latex painton factory applied insulation.Failure to do so may result ininsulation shrinkage.

Note: Units in environmentswith higher humidity mayrequire additional insulation.

Ground Wire Terminal Lugs Ground wire lugs are provided inthe motor terminal box and inthe starter panel.

Terminal Clamps Terminal clamps are suppliedwith the motor terminals toaccommodate either bus bars orstandard motor terminal wirelugs. Terminal clamps provideadditional surface area tominimize the possibility ofimproper electrical connections.

Wire Terminal LugsWire terminal lugs must be field-supplied.

1. Use field-provided crimp-typewire terminal lugs properlysized for the application.

Note: Wire size ranges for thestarter line and load-side lugsare listed on the startersubmittal drawings suppliedby the starter manufacturer orTrane. Carefully review thesubmitted wire lug sizes forcompatibility with theconductor sizes specified bythe electrical engineer orcontractor.

2. A terminal clamp with a 3/8"bolt is provided on eachmotor terminal stud; use thefactor-supplied Bellevillewashers on the wire lugconnections.

Figure 18 illustrates thejuncture between a motorterminal stud and terminalclamp.

3. Tighten each bolt to 24 foot-pounds.

4. Install but do not connect thepower leads between thestarter and compressor motor.(These connections will becompleted under supervisionof a qualified Trane serviceengineer after the prestartinspection).

CAUTION

Correct motor wireterminations!

Ensure the power supply wiringand output motor wiring areconnected to the properterminals. Failure to do so willcause catastrophic failure of thestarter and, or the motor.

Bus BarsInstall bus bars between themotor terminals when a low-voltage “across-the-line,”“primary reactor/resistor,” “autotransformer,” customer-suppliedsolid-state starter, or customer-supplied AFD are field applied.

Be sure to bus motor terminal T1to T6, T2 to T4, and T3 to T5.

Note: Bus bars are not needed inhigh-voltage applications sinceonly 3 terminals are used in themotor and starter.

Starter to UCP (Remote-Mounted Starters Only)

Electrical connections requiredbetween the remote-mountedstarter and the unit control panelare shown in an example of apoint-to-point starter-to-UCPconnection diagram as shown atthe end of the manual.

Note: Install control voltageconduit into control voltagesection of chiller control paneland starter panel. Do not routewith low voltage (30 volts)conduit wires.

When sizing and installing theelectrical conductors for thesecircuits, follow the guidelineslisted.

CAUTION

Damage to Startercomponents!

To avoid damage remove debrisinside the starter panel. Failureto do so may cause an electricalshort that seriously damagesthe starter components.

1. If the starter enclosure mustbe cut to provide electricalaccess, exercise care toprevent debris from fallinginside the enclosure.

2. Use only shielded twisted pairfor the interprocessorcommunication (IPC) circuitbetween the starter and theUCP on remote mountedstarters. Recommended wireis Beldon Type 8760, 18 AWGfor runs up to 1000 feet.

Note: The polarity of the IPCwire pair is critical for properoperation.

3. Separate low-voltage (lessthan 30V) wiring from the115V wiring by running eachin its own conduit.

4. As you route the IPC circuitout of the starter enclosure, make sure that it is at least 6"from all wires carrying ahigher voltage.

5. For UCP IPC shielded twistedpair wiring, the shield shouldbe grounded on one end onlyat UCP at 1X1-G. The otherend should be unterminatedand taped back on the cablesheath to prevent any contactbetween shield and ground.

6. Oil Pump Interlock - Allstarters must provide aninterlock (N.O.) contact withthe chiller oil pump connectedto the UCP at Terminals 1A-J2-7 and 1A9-J2-9.

The purpose of this interlock isto power the oil pump on thechiller in the event that a starterfailure, such as welded contacts, keeps the chiller motor runningafter the controller interrupts therun signal.

CAUTION

Electrical Noise!

Maintain at least 6 inchesbetween low-voltage (<30V) andhigh voltage circuits. Failure todo so could result in electricalnoise that may distort thesignals carried by the low-voltage wiring, including theIPC.
