General safety instructionsAll electrical connections and safetymeasures have to be carried out by aspecialist in due consideration of validstandards and VDE-guidelines as well asthe local regulations.

The electrical connection must be apermanent connection in accordance withVDE 0100).

The electrical connection must be incompliance with the specifications of theATAG boiler.

Important!Deenergize the boiler or wall-mountingcase before opening.Unprofessional plugging attempts undervoltage may damage the control orcause dangerous electrical shocks.

Safety measures for EMC -compliant installation1. Cables with mains voltage must be

generally routed separately fromsensor lines and data bus cables.A minimum distance of 2 cm between thelines is mandatory. Crossing of lines ispermitted.

2. For control units with their own mainsconnections, ensure the power-,sensor- and bus lines are routedseparately. If cable ducts are in use, they must be equipped with separators.

3. When installing the control units orthermostats, a minimum distance of 40cm must be maintained to otherelectrical utilities with electromagneticemissions, such as radio`s, motors, transformers, dimmer switches, microwave ovens and televisions, loudspeakers, computers, radiophonesetc.

4. A minimum distance of 40 cm betweenthe thermostats and control units ismandatory. Several control units in adata bus connection may be installeddirectly side by side.

5. The main connection for the heatingsystem (i.e. boiler control panel -control unit) must be designed as anindependent electrical circuit. Thereshould no fluorescent lamps or othermachines, which may be sources ofdisturbance, be connected and eventhe possibility of such connectionsshould be ruled out.

6. The outside sensor may not beinstalled close to transmitting orreceiving equipment (on garage wallsclose to receivers for radio-controlledgarage door openers, amateur radioantennas, radio controlled alertsystems or close to large scale radiotransmission equipment).

Recommended cable cross-sectionsand maximum permitted cable lengths:

For all cables with mains voltage (powersupply, burner, pumps, actuators)1.5 mm2

Maximum length:Unlimited cable length within houseinstallation.

All low voltage cables (sensors, externalswitches due to demands via contactpoints, modem connection cables, analogue signal cables etc.): 0.5 mm2

Maximum length:100 m (duplicate wire)

Longer connecting cables should beavoided in order to reduce the risk ofinterfering radiation.

Data bus line: 0.6 mm ØMaximum length:50 m (duplicate wire)Longer connecting cables should beavoided in order to reduce the risk ofinterfering radiation.

Installation of the control unit

Mounting instructionsParts necessary for the installation into theboiler control unit:- MadQ control unit 23BC or 233BVVC- MadQ installation set for 23BC or233BVVC

Parts necessary for the installation into thewall-mounting case:- MadQ control unit 23BC or 233BVVC- MadQ wall-mounting case

All control units can be built into thecorresponding ATAG boiler control unit orwall-mounting case after the electricalconnections have been made. They should be fastened with quick-clamping devices (1) by turning themclockwise. The removal is done in reverse order. Seethe assembly instructions that belong tothe MadQ installation set and the MadQwall-mounting case.

Electrical installationThe electrical connection and the furtherrouting to the control units is done on theback of the unit with the four

terminal strips X1, X2, X3 and X4 in theboiler control unit, corresponding to thedesignations in the coloured terminalfields.

The routing in the wall-mounting case isprepared in the factory.

All terminal clamps inside the bluefields (X1) carry low voltage and maynot get into contact with the mainsvoltage! Ignoring this will inevitablylead to the destruction of the controlunit and to the loss of the basis forwarranty claims!

The terminal clamps in the red fields(X2...X4), depending on the operationmode, generally carry mains voltage.

Terminal occupation, see next page.

Note:

When routing the unit, ensure that sensor-, data bus- and mains lines are routedseparately. Mutual routing inside onecable is prohibited. Sensor- and data buslines may not be routed with mains linesthat supply electrical units that are notinterference suppressed according to EN60555-2.

When building in a MadQ controller into a boiler a data bus connection is made between theboiler and the controller through the cable loom. In case of a Cascade installation thepositions 20 and 21 of the connection block of each boiler have to be connected to eachother. Adjust Parameter 89 of each boiler to their individual bus address: Boiler 1 = 00, boiler2 = 01, etc. See also example 17 on page XXXIV.

Wall-mounting case

Application:The wall-mounting case serves as a casefor the control unit.

DesignThe wall-mounting case is only suitable foruse as a case and for the connections ofthe control unit. The control unit is ready for use after ithas been fastened to the motherboardand after the output cables have beenrouted.Assembly and electric installation1- Push out the cable inlets at the pre-

stamped locations at the top or bottomaccording to the size and number ofthe cable ducts.Note:If no cable duct is used, a suitablestrain relief for the cables must beensured during installation.

2- Place locking bolts (1) horizontally andpull off the connection covers (2) toone side.

3- Install the wall-mounting case with thesupplied bolts and dowel pins on a flatsurface without distorting it. Use theenclosed drilling jig.

4- Carry out the electric routing accordingto the unit version and the connectiondiagram (see reverse).

The terminal clamps of the terminalblocks X5 and X6 in the leftconnection

area carry low voltage and may notcome into contact with the mainsvoltage! Ignoring this will inevitablylead to the destruction of the controlunit and to the loss of the basis forwarranty claims!

The terminal clamps of the terminalblocks X7 to X10 in the rightconnection area carry mains voltage, depending on the operation mode. When connecting the electric cables, the cables with a solid core can beplaced directly into the clamp. Thetwisted core must carefully be lead inby pressing the locking device

5- Slide clamp covers onto the wall-mounting case and fasten them.

6- Slide the control unit into the wall-mounting unit and let it engage underevenly distributed pressure. Theelectric connection is made via thesocket strip on the motherboard.Tighten the control unit and both quick-clamping devices clockwise.

Note:

When routing the control unit, ensure thatsensor-, data bus- and mains lines arerouted separately. Mutual routing insideone cable is prohibited. Use cable ductsequipped with separators, if necessary.230 V~

Thermostats (for remote-control)

Mounting Location

a – for applications without room sensorIf the internal room sensor is not to beactivated the unit may be mounted atany location indoors.

b – for applications with room sensorThe activated room sensor should befixed at a height of approx.1.20 – 1.50m at a place most representative of allrooms. It is recommended to chose apartition wall in the coolest day room.In order to ensure sufficient aircirculation at the room station, it must bemounted to the wall with a gapinbetween.

The thermostat must not be mounted:

– at locations subjected to direct solarradiation (consider the position of thesun during winter).

– close to heat-generating appliances, such as televisions, refrigerators, walllamps, radiators etc.

– on walls with heating or domestic hotwater pipes or chimneys behind.

– on non-insulated outside walls

– in corners or wall recesses, shelves orbehind curtains (insufficient ventilation)

– close to doors of unheated rooms(influence of low temperatures)

– on unsealed flush-type boxes(influence of external low temperaturesdue to the chimney effect of installationtubes)

– in rooms with radiators controlled bythermostatic valves (mutual influence).

Mounting instructionsAfter removing the front panel by pressingthe locating lug the wall mounting basecan be taken off and mounted at thedesired location using the enclosed dowelpins and screws. The data bus line mustthereby be routed through the bottomcable gland.Recommended connecting cable:

2x0.6 max. cable length: 50 m.Note: For new installations use a

flush-mounting switch box toensure perfect routing ofcable.

Electrical connection

The 2-strand data bus cable is connectedto terminals A and B of the 2-pole terminalstrip on the bottom plate. The connectionsare not interchangeable and must beconnected in compliance with theidentification A/B on the base. If the twoconnecting lines are mixed up by mistakethe display will be out of function.

Once the electrical connection iscompleted the thermostat is hooked inflush at the top and folded down, asshown in the picture, until it audiblyengages into the wall-mounting base.

Electrical connection at control unitSee assembly instructions of the controllunit.

Data bus allocationThe connection of one or morethermostats to the control unit occurs via atwo-core data bus line. Because thisconnection is always carried out parallel inthe same line, a separate bus addressmust be allocated to every thermostat.

Likewise, a separate bus address must beallocated to every control unit (if there ismore than one, e.g. when the heatingcircuit is extended).

Bus address (control unit)

If there is only one control unit, it shouldhave bus address 10. If there is more thanone control unit in the network (max.: five),the leading control unit that controls theboiler control unit, has bus address 10, theothers are allocated in sequence with busaddresses 20, 30, 40 and 50.

Setting the bus address in the controlunit

The setting of the bus address is carriedout after entering the installer code in thedata bus level of the corresponding controlunit (see commissioning of the controlunit).

Bus address (thermostat)

The allocation of the bus addresses of thecontrol units and the bus addresses of thethermostats must be carried out accordingto the enclosed table.

After setting the bus address using therotary pushbutton and confirming this bypressing it, the allocation determined by theaddress will appear automatically.

Attention:

Double allocation of bus addresses is notpermitted and inevitably lead to faults indata transfer and therefore to faulty controlof the heating system.

B - Changing bus addresses

If a bus address has to be changedafterwards, then carry out the followingprocedure:

1 - By pressing the bottom locking device, remove the thermostat from theground board (the bus isdisconnected).

2 - Place the thermostat again whilekeeping the rotary pushbuttondepressed until the address settingappears.

The outdoor sensor should be mounted onthe most exposed and coldest side of thebuilding (north or north-east) at a height ofmin. 2 m above ground.

Exception: If the preferential livingarea is facing anotherdirection, thecorresponding side ofthe building should bechosen.

When mounting the sensor mind externalheat sources (heated chimneys, war hotair from air shafts, installation on blacksurfaces, thermal bridges in the wall, etc.)which could falsify the measuring value. The cable outlet must always be directeddownwards in order to avoid thepenetration of moisture.

The outside sensor may not be installedclose to transmitting or receivingequipment (on garage walls close toreceivers for garage door openers, amateur radio antennas, radio controlledalarm systems or close to large scaleradio transmission equipment etc.).

Electrical connection

For the electrical installation preferablyuse a 2-strand cable with a minimumcross-section of 0,6mm2 . The connectionis made at the 2 screw terminals inside thesensor case and may be interchanged.

Mounting instructions

1– Route the sensor cable to themounting location

2– Loosen lid screws from sensor caseand remove top

Automatic setting functionThis function can switch off control circuitsthat are not needed or are only needed later.

The control circuits are registeredautomatically when their correspondingsensors are connected and transferpermitted measuring values. Control circuitswithout sensor circuits are automaticallyswitched off without displaying an alarm.

The AUTO-SET function is activated everytime the mains voltage is switched on.

Automatic activation

If the AUTO-SET function is switched on byparameter 14 in the SYSTEM level and thecommissioning date has not yet been saved, then the sensors that are connected orclamped off are registered automaticallyevery time the control unit is switched on.During this period, the error messages of thesensors (short circuit interruption) aresuppressed. If the commissioning date was saved, achanged sensor configuration can only beconfirmed via manual activation.

Manual activation

The AUTO-SET function can be activatedmanually at any time. To do this, press therotary pushbutton when switching on thecontrol unit while the version is beingdisplayed. Keep the button depressed untilthe AUTO-SET function in the display is quit.

The AUTO-SET function serves the followingsensor inputs:– Outdoor sensor– Flow sensor 1– Flow sensor 2– Tank sensor

Apart from that, the AUTO-SET function isonly carried out if the circuits in the followinglevels that are allocated to the sensors wereparameterised accordingly.

For the tank sensor:HYDRAULIC LevelParameter 2 - DHW-charge pump functionset value OFF or 1 (DHW-charge pump)

For flow sensor 1:HYDRAULIC LevelParameter 3 – mixed circuit function 1 setvalue OFF or 3 (mixed circuit)

For flow sensor 2:HYDRAULIC LevelParameter 4 – mixed circuit function 2 setvalue OFF or 3 (mixed circuit)

Because a parameter setting is not changedby the AUTO-SET function, the currentsettings are checked beforehand. A change isonly made if one of the settings above ischanged. This means that the deeper systemconfiguration can never be changed by theAUTO-SET function.

Alarm messagesIn order to be able to perform an exactdiagnose in case of a problem the controlsystem is equipped with a comprehensivefault alarm system. An alarm is therebyalways displayed and saved on thecorresponding control unit.

There are five different categories of errormessages:

1 - Sensor error messagesSensor measuring values that are notinside the measuring range are valued aserrors. They appear with an error messageaccording to their use.

2 - Error messages of the boiler controlunitThese error messages evaluate therespective control status. They appear withthe corresponding error message, depending on the version and allocation.

3 - Logical error messagesThe error messages evaluate the expectedcontrol result. They appear with thecorresponding error message, dependingon the version and allocation.

4 - Bus error messagesThese error messages relate to addresserrors such as double allocation orunrecognised address settings inside thedata bus. They appear with thecorresponding error message, dependingon the version and allocation.

5 - Alarms from the boiler controlThese error messages come from theboiler control and are divided intopermanent faults (permanent locking) witherror code E-XX (MCBA-code) ortemporary faults (self-eliminating locking)with fault code B-XX (MCBA-code).

The display and further processing of logicalerror messages can be suppressed by acorresponding parameter setting (seeparameter 13 – SYSTEM level – logical errormessage)

Further processing of errors:

– Errors appear in the standard display of thecontrol

– System errors appear in the info-level at thecorresponding info-value

– If necessary, errors are transferred into theerror message level (see description below)

– At the corresponding parameter settings, errors activate an error notification outputfor connecting an optical or acoustic signaltransmitter.

– Errors are transferred to the correspondinggateways via the data bus.

Alarm message register

The control unit is provided with an errormessage level, which is able to hold up to fivealarms. The alarms are displayed with date, time, and nature of fault (error number), theerrors are polled in the sequence of theiroccurrence in the level ALARM.

The latest (= up-to-date) alarm is prioritized atfirst position, alarms that have arrived beforeappear in the order of their occurrence. Uponarrival of a new alarm the fifth alarm will bedeleted.

The alarm messages of the MCBA are aspecial case. Because they are externalerrors, they are not saved in the internal errormessage register of the control unit.

Plant informationPlants and system temperaturesAfter accessing the information level using theinformation key ¤ , all available plant- andsystem temperatures can be requested oneby one by turning the rotary pushbuttonclockwise.

If set value is displayed in the following tablein the category "display value", it will appearwhen the rotary pushbutton is pushed. The following displays only appear under thespecified display conditions. Some of thedisplays are not available for certain unitversions and are therefore skipped.
