InstallingAIX - Installation and migration. AIX 7.1

• Boot from the AIX product media.

• Set BOS Installation Settings.

– Perform a complete overwrite installation of AIX onto hdisk0

– Use English as the primary language

– Use the default options in the More Options menu

• Start the BOS Installation and Configure the System• Gather the TCP/IP info before you begin

• AIX requires minimum of 512 MB of memory and 5 GB of physical disk space..

Step 1. Prepare your system

• If you do not have an ASCII terminal set up, you need to set the communications, the keyboard and display.

Setting up an ASCII terminal

Communication Options:Line speed (baud rate) 9600, Word Length (bits per character) 8, Parity no (none), Number of stop bits 1 , Interface RS-232C (or RS-422A), Line control IPRTS

Keyboard and display options: Options Settings:Screen normal, Row and Column 24x80, Scroll jump, Auto LF (line feed) off, Line Wrap on, Forcing Insert line (or both),Tab field, Operating Mode echo , Turnaround Character CR,Enter return, Return new line, New Line CR, Send pageInsert Character space

• Insert AIX Volume 1 media into the media device.

• Power on the system. When the system beeps twice, press F5 on the keyboard (5-ASCII terminal).

• Select system console by pressing F1 (1), press Enter.

• Select English. Press Enter to open the Welcome to Base Operating System Installation and Maintenance screen.

• Type 2 to select 2 Change/Show Installation Settings and Install in the Choice field and press Enter

• If the default choices are correct, type 0 and press Enter to begin the BOS installation.

• Select hdisk0 by typing a 1 and press Enter. >>> 0Verify that the selections are correct in Overwrite InstallationSummaryDisks: hdisk0 ! Cultural Convention: en_US ! Language: en_US ! Keyboard: en_US !

• Press Enter to begin the BOS installation. The system automatically reboots after installation is complete

Step 3. Set and verify BOS installation settings

• On systems with a graphics display, after a new and complete overwrite installation, the Configuration Assistant opens. On systems with an ASCII display, after a new and complete overwrite installation, the Installation Assistant opens.

• Select the Accept Licenses option to accept the electronic licenses for the operating system.

• Set the date and time, set the password for the administrator (root user), and configure network communications (TCP/IP).

• Select Exit the Configuration Assistant and select Next. Or, press F10 (or ESC+0) to exit the Installation Assistant.

• Ensure that the root user has a primary authentication of SYSTEM:

# lsuser -a auth1 root # chuser auth1=SYSTEM root

• generate an error report# errpt –a

• Run the pre_migration script:

• mount_point/usr/lpp/bos

# mount -v cdrfs -o ro /dev/cdN /mnt ("N" is drive number).

• Make a backup copy of system software and data.

• Reboot the system : # shutdown -r

• When the system beeps twice, press F5 on the keyboard (5-ASCII terminal).

• Select Primary Language Environment Settings (AFTER Install). Type 3 and press Enter to select More Options. Verify the selections in the Migration Installation Summary screen and press Enter.

• When the Migration Confirmation menu opens, follow the menu instructions to list system information or continue by typing 0 and pressing Enter.

• After a migration installation, the Configuration or Installation Assistant opens. Select the Accept Licenses.

• Verify the administrator (root user) password and network communications (TCP/IP) information. Select Exit the Configuration Assistant and select Next. Or, press F10 (or ESC+0) to exit, select Finish now, and

• Do not start Configuration Assistant when restarting , then select Finish.

• When the login prompt displays, log in as the root user to perform system administration tasks.

• Run the /usr/lpp/bos/post_migration script.

• Log in as root.

• set RECOVER_DEVICES variable to no in bosinst.data

• #df command, 512-byte blocks at least 40 MB of free disk space available in /tmp., for a system with 4 MB partitions

• # chfs -a size=+80000 /tmp

• # lslpp -l bos.sysmgt.sysbr - no bos.sysmgt.sysbr ? install it:

• # installp -agqXd /dev/cd0 bos.sysmgt.sysbr

• Enter the smit mksysb fast path. Select the tape device in the Backup DEVICE or File field.

• Press Enter to confirm and begin the system backup process.

• To exit SMIT when the backup completes, press F10 (or Esc+0).

• Remove the tape and label it. Write-protect the backup tape.

• Record any backed-up root and user passwords. Remember that these passwords become active if you use the backup to either restore this system or install another system.

• You have successfully created the backup of your rootvg.

Have strong knowledge of system backup and recovery

Configuring and managing system security

Use NIM, WPAR Manager and Systems Director (base product)

Understand PowerVM components such as AME, AMS, Shared Processor Pools, etc.
