INSTALLING THE 3-3-5 DEFENSE
8/3/2019 Installing the 3-3-5 Defense
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/installing-the-3-3-5-defense 2/216
WHY THE 3-3-5 DEFENSE?
•Makes the offense become Protection Oriented
•Gives Maximum numbers to stop the running game
• Able to give a Variety of looks with Minimal Teaching
•Pre-snap movement creates Confusion (Organized Chaos)
•Physical, Aggressive, Attacking style of play
• Allows smaller, faster athletes to be Successful
•Fun for the players!
• Attacks the Pass Protection weaknesses
•Creates Negative Yardage plays and Turnovers

Our Defensive “Mode”
• We are not a traditional gap control, read defense
(although it can be played in that mode if desired).
• We are a stunting, blitzing, attacking defense, takingadvantage of our speed and giving our undersized
defense a chance to be successful
• We will begin our installation/teaching process with thebase defense, a 3-3 Stack playing cover 3
• We feel it is necessary to teach this base before weprogress to slants, stunts, and blitzes

We are playing the 3-3 with thefollowing defensive philosophy:
• 1. TAKE AWAY WHAT THE OFFENSE
DOES BEST; MAKE THEM BEAT YOUWITH SOMETHING ELSE. (More than 1
adjustment for a particular offensiveformation)
Examples:Defending an Offense using spread formations to run the ball more effectively

One strategy vs. spread offense that gets into a trips formation torun the ball more effectively: Keep 6 in the box and align the FreeSafety over inside receiver. With Spur within 5 yards, it’s an 7 man
box.

We are playing the 3-3 with thefollowing defensive philosophy:
2. Whatever scheme you use, NEVER let the offense
gain an advantage by formation, shifts, or motion.ALWAYS have base defensive checks built into
the scheme to handle these things.
Example- Formation Check: “Pull” Call

We are playing the 3-3 with the followingdefensive philosophy:
• 5. Offenses operate on rhythm, that rhythm MUSTbe disrupted. Effective ways to disrupt offensiverhythm are: stemming fronts, line stunts, blitzes, anddisguising pass coverage.
• 6. Make the QB read the pass coverage POSTSNAP; don’t let him settle in before the snap andknow where his primary read is.
• 7. Multiple fronts and/or coverages MAY betterserve to defend particular offensive schemes.

We are playing the 3-3 with the followingdefensive philosophy:
• 8. Pursuit drill must be run every day
• 9. Tackling drills must be run every day.
• 10. Whatever defenses you run, the kids MUSTBELIEVE in it. They must understand what itsstrengths and weaknesses are, and what you are
trying to accomplish with a particular front, blitz,or coverage.

• WIN!• Hold Our Opponents To 3.0 YPC• Hold Opponents to 10 Points or Less• Get 3 Turnovers
• Score or get a turnover in score zone• Prevent Big Plays… No Runs over 12 yards… No
Passes over 20 Yards• No TD’s after sudden change • 50% 3 and Out• Win 3rd Down 75% and 4th Down 100%• Hold Opponents to less than 50% Completion• Hold Opponent to 150 yards of total offense

Defensive Absolutes
1. Stop The Run: No one will run the footballsuccessfully against our defense. We willcommit as many people to the LOS as
necessary in order to stop the run.2. Control the Pass: We are primarily a zone
coverage team. We will take away the deepball and not allow our opponent to score on big
plays. We will be proficient in our coveragepackages. Our secondary will play hard andfast, forcing incomplete passes and turnovers.

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/installing-the-3-3-5-defense 16/216
Defensive Absolutes
3. We will be the best tackling team in ourconference! We emphasize fundamentaltackling with extreme effort. We will punishball carriers and develop an attitude and
swagger necessary to dominate our opponent.4. Pursuit: We will get 11 people to the football
every play! It does not take talent to hustle tothe football. We want as many of our helmetson the ball carrier as we can each play.
5. Create Takeaways: We must createturnovers to give ourselves opportunities for ashort field.

Turnovers
• We will create a minimum of threeturnovers a game by attacking ouropponent. We will work our strip and
takeaway drills everyday in practice untilthey become second nature.

Defensive Line Techniques• Defensive lineman will line up with a slightly elongated
stance. In passing situations we want the butt in the air• The foot that is back will be the hand that is down.• Weight will be 60 percent on the hand• Use a ball key, ball moves, you move
• ―The foot replaces the hand‖ • We attack 1/3 of the man! We never play the middle of
the man unless on a bull technique.• We attack our gap shoulder and feel the block of the
offensive lineman. We want to be physical on the gap
shoulder• Maintain gap integrity while squeezing the gap.• Never penetrate past the butt of the offensive lineman• Control your gap and maintain gap integrity

Why Pressure?
8/3/2019 Installing the 3-3-5 Defense
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/installing-the-3-3-5-defense 101/216
• To attack a weakness in protection scheme or
personnel
• To break a defensive tendency (as a change up)
• To force a short throw (sight adjustment) in athird and long situation
• To augment your normal pass rush numbers
• To create a big play and change momentum
• To attack an offensive tendency
Principles for Applying Pressure
8/3/2019 Installing the 3-3-5 Defense
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/installing-the-3-3-5-defense 102/216
p pp y g
• Use more than one disguise per blitz
• Know the protection scheme you are attacking
• Know the opponent’s hot reads and sight adjustments
(may be able to force a certain throw favorable to you)
• Ensure your defense is gap sound
• Assign proper run force
• In man schemes, every potential receiver is accounted for
• Don’t allow offense to create a mismatch
• Create mismatches that favor the defense-attack weakness
• Disguise your intentions if at all possible
Principles for Maximizing Effectiveness

technique that will allow them to react quickly to the ballcarrier. The following are the techniques used in defendingthe run.1) Chase and Collapse2) Force3) Contain

Chase and CollapseIn order to play sound football from the backside, you mustbe aware of pursuit techniques. Three of the most importantfactors in this phase of football are defending the cutback

factors in this phase of football are defending the cutback
zone, reverse, and backside leverage (bootleg). Theseresponsibilities fall on the backside End and backside SS orOutside LB. However certain pressure packages will requirean inside LB to use one or more of these techniques.
The defender who is assigned to the cutback will have“collapse” responsibility and the defender who has the
reverse and bootleg will have “chase” responsibilities.
Chase : Last down lineman on the LOS typically has thisresponsibility. When a chase defender reads ball away, hewill pursue as deep as the ball, keeping the ball carrier orQB on his inside shoulder. If the chase defender reads pass
he is responsible for outside contain of the QB. A chasedefender continues to chase ball away until he reachesopposite B-gap. Once the chase defender reaches oppositeB-gap he will then take proper pursuit angles to ball carrier orQB.
Chase and Collapse (Con’t)Collapse : The SS will typically have collapse. The SS pursues thefootball on or behind the line of scrimmage he has collapse
