Hot asphalt is an eff ective method for road surfacing but can be costly and inconvenient for what are simple repairs.Although ideal for such repairs, cold lay asphalt has always been seen as a short-term resolution with a lesser performance.

But not anymore!A simple proven cold lay asphalt solution that provides a permanent repair is now at your fi ngertips.

Ultracrete Instant Road Repair® is a cold mix technology developed over 35 years ago, as an instant and permanent repair for potholes. It requires no heating and is applied directly from the packaging.

Ultracrete Instant Road Repair® has many advantages over traditional road repair methods, for example the product can be applied in any climate and unlike hot asphalt, it requires minimal preparation. Simply brush the pothole free of debris, pour the material in the pothole straight from the tub and compact. Ultracrete Instant Road Repair® also eliminates waste – once hot asphalt cools it can no longer be used in repairs eff ectively, however unused Instant Road Repair can be stored in a container for use the next day.

Aggregate

Aggregate is a key ingredient making up over 90% of the final product. It is the vital ingredient of Ultracrete Instant Road Repair®, and should be carefully chosen and evaluated in order to provide the perfect repair product.

It is important to bear in mind the below attributes when considering your aggregate:

•Strength •Durability •Density •Resistancetowear •Resistancetopolish(PSV>60) •Resistancetofreeze/thawcycle •Sizedistribution •Shape •Cleanlinessanddryness

All of these attributes contribute to the overall performance of the repair material, for example;

• The strength and resistance to wear should be appropriate to the anticipated traffic loads.

• Resistance to polish is important in maintaining excellent micro-texture on the road surface which in turn is important in ensuring a high skid resistance level is achieved.

• Size distribution and shape help determine the inter-locking and compactibility of the repair material and contribute to the final strength of the product.


Binder

Instarmac provides each licensee with a bitumen binder liquid and a number of special ingredients for manufacture of your own Instant Road Repair. Continuously developed for over 35 years, our Technical team have worked from the original recipe to develop a refined, high performance, quality ingredient. This is the magic in Ultracrete Instant Road Repair®.

Technical Processes Instarmac issues the technical specification for aggregate/stone/rock.You, as Licensee, source a local supplier/quarry and send samples to Instarmac for evaluation (minimum 1kg of each size).Instarmac’s laboratory technicians will:

1. Evaluate samples for suitability2. Determine levels of binder/admixture3. Mix batches of Instant Road Repair and test for performance4. Issue the licensee’s unique formulation for local production

Instarmac can meet your shipping requirements, however, drums of Ultracrete mixing liquid are traditionally shipped to licensees in a minimum quantity of 80 x 190kg drums in a 20ft container; packed 4 drums per pallet.

HarmonisedSystemNumber(HSNumber)– For customs purposes:

Ultracrete mixing liquid is covered by the HS number 2715.0000 under the following description:

“Bituminous mixtures based on natural asphalt, on natural bitumen, on petroleum bitumen, on mineral tar on mineral tar pitch (for example bituminous mastics, cut backs)”

In many countries Ultracrete mixing liquid is classed as a raw material used as part of the manufacturing process and as such carries no import tariff.

The finished product, Ultracrete Instant Road Repair®, comes under the HS Number 2517.3000 – “Tarred Macadam”.

• 3 areas each consisting of 16 to 20 tonnes capacity for storing aggregate• An area to mix the materials • Space for drums being used• Storage area for buckets/bags• Filling/bagging area• A storage area for the finished product• An area for storing drums – this can be outside if indoor space is limited It is also advisable to leave a large enough access area for vehicles delivering aggregate to your premises and also collecting the finished product. The closer the vehicles can get to the specific areas of the factory the better as this will save time and labour.

The Manufacturing PlantWe advise all licensees to establish a manufacturing plant, with the ability to expand with extra machinery as demand for the product grows. It is of the utmost importance to design your plant effi ciently to ensure you gain maximum coverage and space. At Instarmac, we have a team of experts on-hand to help with the design of your manufacturing plant and to ensure you get the maximum economical output possible.

MachineryRequired-Mixers

Selecting the right type of mixer is an important part of the manufacturing process, ensuring that a quality mix is being produced. Licensees are required to purchase a pan mixer to manufacture Ultracrete Instant Road Repair®. Pan mixers have been proven to achieve consistent high quality mixes due to their unique mixing action. Some mixers such as conventional concrete mixers are unsuitable and give unsatisfactory results. We advise all licensees to provide full details about mixers prior to purchase – we can off er assistance and guidance in selecting the right mixer.

Licensees are strongly advised to purchase as large a mixer as possible, ideally with the capacity to mix at least 200kg and with a speed of 16 to 24 revolutions per minute (rpm).

As a Global Partner you will receive training and assistance on how best to manufacture Ultracrete Instant Road Repair®. A member of our technical team will make a site visit to inspect the fi nal plant layout, supervise training of staff , oversee the initial production of your Instant Road Repair product and instruct you on quality control procedures.

Manufacturing&QualityControlProcedureEvery licensee will receive a manufacturing and quality control procedure to ensure that every batch of Ultracrete Instant Road Repair manufactured is consistent. Our team will advise on a suitable quality testing programme.

The Mixing ProcessIt takes between 3 and 3 ½ minutes to mix a batch of Ultracrete Instant Road Repair®. It is important that you do not exceed this time frame as over mixing the material can lead to a reduced storage life.

During the mixing process, you must ensure that the aggregates have been evenly coated in the binding mixing liquid.

CompletingManufactureofUltracreteInstantRoadRepair®Once the material has been mixed and dispensed into the holding hopper, it is imperative that the material is packaged and sealed immediately. If packaging in a bag then exclude as much air as possible.

WhatshouldUltracreteInstantRoadRepair®looklike?The fi nished product should be consistent in colour, have a shiny black appearance and fl ow with a slumping eff ect – it is imperative that all aggregate is coated.

PackagingofUltracreteInstantRoadRepair®In the UK, we sell Ultracrete Instant Road Repair® in 25kg recyclable plastic containers. Although we would recommend these, the fi nal decision lies with each licensee.

StorageIn unopened drums, our mixing liquid has a minimum storage life of 10 years. The drums are not vulnerable to intense heat or cold and therefore can be stored outside. It is imperative that the drums remain sealed in order to prevent solvents from escaping.

Autobahn – GermanyOur German Instant Road Repair licensee have turned their product into a proven choice for the repair of potholes on many of the busiest roads in Germany, including the world famous Autobahn. The intersection on the Autobahn at Potsdam where the A9 Autobahn Munich to Berlin meets the A2 Autobahn Rotterdam to Berlin, is one of Germany’s busiest roads. Hundreds of thousands of vehicles travel across this section regularly with peak traffi c at Easter reaching 900,000 vehicles a day. It is no surprise that parts of the road had become cracked and damaged needing urgent attention. This was the ideal location for our German Licensee’s product Instamak® Reparaturasphalt.

Oshogbo, South-West Nigeria

ProblemDangerous potholes had virtually stopped economic activities in the rural communities along the Gbongan-Oshogbo and Ilesa Road in south-west Nigeria. The poor state of the roads made it diffi cult for farm produce to move from one point to another and for tourists to reach the Osun Oshogbo Festival.

ActionOur Nigerian Instant Road Repair licensee used the cold lay to repair the damaged road. Oshogbo is the trade centre for the large farming region producing yams, cassava, grain, tobacco and cotton. It is crucial that these roads can be passed safely in order for the local communities to earn an income. Every August, thousands of people travel from all over the world to attend the Osun sacred groves in Oshogbo, a grand and colourful cultural festival. The festival increases tourism for the area and provides a much needed economic boost for the Osun State. The local communities have already seen a positive impact - reducing povety, increasing quality of life and boosting economic importance. Instant Road Repair is a cold mix technology developed as an instant and permanent repair for potholes and damaged asphalt.

Romanian Instant Road Repair licensee have been manufacturing Ultracrete road repair materials for many years and for a variety of repairs. In July 2011 they completed a project usingred Instant Road Repair on a bicycle track in Radauti City.
