The world is in a vulnerable place right now. The standard diet of processed, chemicalized foods is a global issue being discussed everywhere from local councils to government cabinets.

Fast food can be found in every corner of the globe and countries once fighting hunger are now fighting an obesity epidemic. Solutions come in a prescription bottle or through surgery.

But there are signs of change. It’s slow, but there is a revolution happening. A health revolution.

Awareness around food and health issues is coming to light through documentaries and public campaigns. Nutrition-focused topics dominate magazine covers and on the news. Farmers’ markets are now a staple in most neighborhoods. We are waking up to reality and taking back control of our health.

We are at the forefront of a healthier future and it continues with you.

I have a goal for the year 2020: to have the world see clearly, with 20/20 vision, that food changes everything. For over 20 years, we have educated students on the vital importance of true nourishment. In turn, Integrative Nutrition Health Coaches have gone on to educate tens of thousands more people.

Together, we are creating a ripple effect that is bringing health and happiness to the world.

As you read through this curriculum guide, I invite you to imagine how the education and training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition can help you reinvent your life. Health and happiness are inextricably linked. The better you feed yourself, the bigger the impact you can have on the world.

The Health Coaching Revolution

A Health Coach is a wellness authority and supportive mentor who helps clients shift their behavior towards healthier habits. Whether the goal is weight loss, improved digestion, stress reduction, or boosted energy, Health Coaches support clients to create sustainable lifestyle change.

WHAT IS A HEALTH COACH?

As awareness shifts towards the importance of preventive care, health coaching fills a void in the current healthcare paradigm. Most doctors lack the time and resources to help patients achieve their wellness goals.

By addressing all facets of wellness in addition to diet – relationships, career, physical activity, and spirituality – Integrative Nutrition Health Coaches take a holistic approach to health and help clients find the unique foods and lifestyle that make them feel their best.

The Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) was founded in 1992 by Joshua Rosenthal and is now the largest nutrition school in the world. Not Your Traditional Nutrition School

The Health Coach Training Program is a one-year online course specially designed for people who are passionate about health and wellness. In addition to offering cutting-edge nutrition education, Integrative Nutrition also provides bonus business training that empowers students to launch their own practice as an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach.

One-Year Health Coach Training Program

Taught by the world’s leading physicians, researchers, doctors, and nutrition experts, the Health Coach Training Program introduces students to over 100 dietary theories as well as personal development philosophy, coaching techniques, and holistic concepts you won’t find in a traditional nutrition school.

Online Learning to Fit Your Busy Lifestyle

Integrative Nutrition’s innovative app, the IIN Learning Center, enables you to study from your computer, smartphone, or tablet when and where it’s convenient for you. The program allows for maximum access and flexibility, so you can balance this education with your busy lifestyle.

Primary Food

At Integrative Nutrition, we have a philosophy about food – everything we consider a source of nutrition is really just a secondary source of nourishment. The foods you eat are secondary to the other aspects of life that feed you. This is what we call primary food.

At Integrative Nutrition, we teach you how to improve your own primary food and talk to clients about all aspects of their lives. It’s essential to good health.

RELATIONSHIPSYou can eat all the broccoli in the world, but the quality of your relationships with family, friends, and coworkers explains a lot about the quality of your life. Cultivate relationships that support your wants and needs.

CAREERMost people spend 8-10 hours a day, five days a week at work. Are you passionate about your job? Do you love who you work with? Finding work you enjoy is essential to living a healthy, balanced life.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITYOur bodies thrive on movement and quickly degenerate without it. Exercise can be simple, such as getting off the subway or bus one stop early. Making physical activity a daily habit greatly increases your health and happiness.

SPIRITUALITYWe all search for meaning in our lives, and feeling at one with the world can satisfy that longing. Some people follow their traditional religion of birth while others explore new traditions. Spiritual nutrition can feed us on a very deep level and diminish cravings for the superficial rewards of life.

What Feeds Your Hunger for Life?Integrative Nutrition goes way beyond the USDA nutrition guidelines and covers cutting-edge nutrition concepts, alternative medicine, and modern health issues you won’t find in a traditional nutrition program.

THE HEALTH COACH TRAINING PROGRAM

Bio-individuality

There’s no one diet for everyone – this is the core principle of the Integrative Nutrition curriculum. Students explore the pros and cons of over 100 dietary theories and learn how to create personalized approaches to food and lifestyle

Superfoods

Learn about the anti-oxidant rich fruits. Certain foods are powerful enough to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer, and improve your mood. Learn about the antioxidant rich fruits, vegetables, and whole grains lining the shelves of your health food store.

Organic and Local Foods

Discover how organic, non-organic, commercial, and locally sourced meat and produce are different, and learn how farming methods can impact your health and the environment.

Emotional EatingMany people try to heal sadness, depression, and anxiety with food; this tactic can easily lead to overeating and unwanted weight gain. Explore the connection between food and emotions.

Government Policies

Why are unhealthy foods cheaper than healthy foods in the United States? Learn about government subsidies, campaign contributions, and the pros and cons of the USDA’s dietary guidelines.

Global Health Crisis

Rates of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease continue to skyrocket. We spend an exorbitant amount of money on medications and operations, but very little time learning prevention and education. Learn how you can reverse this trend.

School Food and Childhood ObesitySchool food has long been blamed as the number-one cause of childhood obesity. Learn about new programs being launched to control this issue and how you can make a difference.

Deconstructing Cravings

Many people believe that cravings are problem, but Integrative Nutrition believes that cravings play a critical role in understanding what the body needs. You will learn how to satisfy and manage these cravings in healthy ways.

Crowding OutMost nutrition experts give their clients a list of foods to avoid, which explains why so many people are turned off by nutrition. “Crowding out” involves adding more healthy food to your diet rather than cutting back on foods you enjoy.

Energetics of Food

Food has distinct qualities and energetic properties that affect your body depending on where, when, and how it’s grown and prepared. Learn how different foods may affect the way you feel.

Food/Mood Connection

Scientific research shows that what we eat affects how we think, feel, and act. Get the tools to deconstruct why you feel a certain way after eating a certain food to find what works best for you.

Nutrition Science

Our curriculum reviews basic concepts in human anatomy and how our digestive systems function. We provide a general introduction to inflammation, digestion, blood sugar imbalance, metabolism, epigenetics, endocrine health, autoimmune disorders, and more.

LOUIS VITIELLO, JR ’13Louis lost more than 200 pounds after being

told he would die if he didn’t improve his health. His transformation inspired him to become a Health Coach and create Simple

Steps Weight Loss.

“As a coach, I work passionately to guide busy women towards a more simple and balanced approach to healthy eating and living.”

There was a time in my life when I was reaching for toxic foods, substances and relationships that depleted my sense of well-being. My life-changing transformation began by learning about the powers and healing capabilities of clean eating.

I decided to make a career out of this passion and was eventually introduced to Integrative Nutrition. Through this life-changing program, I learned about the power of food and what it meant to create real nourishment in ALL areas of life! I am now able to infuse my coaching practice with this same approach.

“Start a natural food company. Those were the words I wrote down while at IIN.”

My goal was simple. I wanted to provide healthier, better-tasting alternatives to what was currently on the market. I was just learning about all these powerful superfoods and realized they weren’t being incorporated into products on the grocery shelf. So I set out to recreate the most delicious food products using these nutrient-rich ingredients.

Our goal is to continue to redefine the standards of packaged foods.

“It was about changing my mindset, my lifestyle, and my relationship with food – forever.”

Integrative Nutrition’s program gave me the confidence to leave my job, build my dream, be featured on radio and television, and become recognized as an expert in my field. After 13 long years working in information technology, who knew that work could be so much fun and inspiring? I love being a Health Coach, and thank IIN for the amazing life I now live.

“Skincare might not change the world, but shouldn’t it at least try?”

You do want great skin, but you don’t want to hurt yourself or the planet to get it. And that’s why I started S.W. Basics.

I primarily wanted to help people have healthier skin naturally. But our goal is bigger: to make products that contribute to the overall health of our communities by supporting family farmers, small American manufacturers, and values-driven partners. The days of “every company for itself” are over, so we want to make sure that every time a customer supports us, they’re getting to support awesome businesses all along our supply chain.

“We promote collaboration and cooperation in the kitchen, and believe that each person has unique skills and perspectives that can add value to any situation.”

Through our combined background in education and public health, and from inspiration and support from Integrative Nutrition, we founded The Cookbook Project. We use a train-the-trainer model to equip educators to empower youth to make healthier food choices, expand their palates, and most importantly, cook! It is our vision that through our innovative food literacy education program, we can create healthier and more sustainable communities worldwide.

We especially love training other Health Coaches interested in sharing their skills with youth in order to continue the IIN ripple effect!

“We want to take you on a journey towards healthier habits, through educational events that teach you how to integrate the most wholesome products into your life.”

As an Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, food educator and nutrition consultant, I work with individual clients and companies on improving their health and well-being through building an awareness of foods, addressing how we feed our minds and bodies, direct our energies, identifying unhealthy lifestyle aspects and making conscious decisions. At Sprout, we believe in the importance of nutrition education, at all ages, to fully understand our food and how it affects our bodies from the inside out.

“I have seen people suffering all over the world from their diet and lifestyle choices, and they don’t even know it.”

90/10 Theory A flexible approach to eating that strives for eating healthy foods 90 percent of the time and allowing 10 percent of the time to eat whatever you desire.

Acid-Alkaline This theory is that some foods, such as meat and processed foods, cause your body to produce acid, while other foods, such as fruits and vegetables, are more alkaline and promote better health.

Anti-Inflammatory This diet is based on the idea that foods high in fats and sugar accelerate the aging process whereas foods with antioxidants like fish, fruits, and vegetables are anti-inflammatory and slow the onset of aging.

DIETARY THEORIES

Atkins This diet restricts carbohydrates, causing the body to burn its own fat for fuel, instead of carbohydrates.

Ayurveda This ancient healing system from India emphasizes eating in accordance with your individual body type and the seasons.

Blood Type An individualized approach to eating, which depends on blood type and combines anthropology, medical history, and genetics.

Body Ecology A diet based on balancing the body’s internal ecosystem through the restoration of gut health. It is based heavily on the concept of food combining and is primarily vegetarian.

Food Changes Everything

Adapted from the original USDA MyPlate, the Integrative Nutrition Plate focuses on nourishing food as well as lifestyle choices.

THE INTEGRATIVE NUTRITION PLATE

The Integrative Nutrition Plate emphasizes the importance of local and organic produce, whole grains, vegetarian and high-quality animal proteins, healthy plant-based fats, and water. It serves as a general guideline for healthy eating, but should be adapted and customized according to what works best for each person. To complete the picture, the plate is surrounded with lifestyle factors that create optimal health: relationships, physical activity, career, and spirituality. Integrative Nutrition encourages people to look at these aspects of life, which we refer to as primary food, as a form of of nourishment that can make your life extraordinary.

“The Integrative Nutrition Plate is explicit about what to eat, and what not to eat. These details are essential if the typical American diet is going to be a force for health, rather than an impediment to it!”
