Institute of Horticulture Technology takes lead in hygienic vegetable production
bLa VhV;~ Vw vkQW gkVW hdZ Ypj VDs ukyktW h Recognised by Department of Agriculture & Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India
Hydroponically grown lettuce does not come in contact with soil and grows on a nutrient
media free of organic or inorganic contaminants may be hazardous for human health.
Vegetables are the best known protective food of st21 century, besides being rich in vitamins and
antioxidants their value as nutraceuticals has also
been realized. The production of vegetables in
peri urban areas for supply to the metros is
generally afflicted with unhygienic cultivation
practices resulting in produce carrying worms
and other infectious organisms hazardous to
human health. Most of the unhygienic vegetable
produce is due to contaminated soil and water on
which these are produced. Vegetable producers in
peri urban areas often neglect standards of good
agricultural practices and hygiene as most of the
seasonal vegetables are cultivated on the river
banks and irrigated with the polluted river water
and sprayed with various pesticides with the main
target to get increased yields. In some cases due to
lack of environmental hygiene, presence of
potentially harmful substances would lead to
unacceptable level of such substances on fresh
vegetables after harvest. In this scenario Institute
of Horticulture Technology has successfully
demonstrated the latest technology of
hydroponics in vegetable production and crops
such as lettuce, tomato, cucumber and bell pepper
have been successfully grown at Technology park
of the institute. IHT is working on lowering the
cost of production of hydroponically grown
vegetables. Hydroponic cultivation assures
hygienic produce as well as it suits to vertical
farming, thus it is boon for urban and peri urban
areas, where in soil cultivation has become
vulnerable to poor hygiene.

TRAININGS AND EXPOSURE VISITS
IHT conducted two trainings of
NDMC gardeners on terrace gardening
and landscaping. The main objective
of the training was to make these
gardeners familiar with general
principles and elements of gardening
and landscaping. The participants
received instruction on terrace
gardening and lawn maintenance. An
exposure visit to Technology Park of
IHT was conducted to show advances in Hi-Tec horticulture.
New Delhi Municipal Corporation Exposure Visit
Training of two batches of horticulture
officers from Madhya Pradesh was
conducted by IHT in the month of
December. The training topic of first
batch was 'Innovative Production
Technology of Vegetable Crops' in this
programme the officers were provided
with complete knowledge of the
vegetable production under different
protected structures. The training of second batch focused on 'Quality Planting Material of
Fruit Crops' both the batches had exposure visits and practical demonstrations in Technology
Park.
Training for Horticulture Officers of Madhya Pradesh
IHT conducted training of officers and farmers
from Andaman and Nicobar islands. They were
provided training on 'Innovative Production
Technology of Vegetable Crops' that covers Hi-
tech nursery raising of vegetable crops, package
of practices of production of vegetable in
protected structure and plant protection
measures.
Training for Andaman and Nicobar Farmers and Officers:
Dr. U.K. Kohli, Director of Institute of Horticulture
Technology took part in national level agriculture fair at
Raipur Chhattisgarh from 26th to 28th December 2016. He
addressed farmers on protected cultivation and took them
around in the demonstration plots of Hi-Tech horticulture in
IGKV. A question answer session with the farmers was a
great success. IHT was awarded memento for participation
in the National Agriculture Fair, Chhattisgarh.
