ABSTRACTThis document is the fourth in an annual survey
series summarizing data from the Colleges of Education in Florida'snine state universities. At the end of each quarter, each universityforwards a report to a central nniversity system office containinginformation on students who were assigned to schools to fulfill fieldexperience internship requirements. The information contained inthese reports consists of (1) the counties in which the studentteachers were assigned and (2) the number of student teachersassigned in each, classified according to the student's area ofspecialization. The data is compiled and compared on a yearly basisin an effort to ascertain current trends in Florida's system ofteacher education. Information for the 1974-75 placement pattern ispresented in this document through discussion, the display of over 40tables, and geographic distribution maps. The data for 1974-75 tendsto confirm previous trends in that universities, when placing studentteachers, use closer geographic concentration in order to provide themaximum cost effectiveness while maintaining quality supervisionwithin the framework of available positions. SURVEY OF STUDENT TEACHINGIN THE
STATE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF FLORIDA1974-1975
INTRODUCTION
At the end of each quarter, the Colleges of Education in Florida's nine
state universities forward reports of their students who were assigned to schools
to fulfill the field experience internship requirement. The information con-
tained in these reports consists of (a) the counties in which the student teachers
were assigned and (b) the number of student teachers assigned in each, classified
according to the student's area of specialization. This information is then
compiled and compared on a yearly basis in an effort to ascertain current trends
in Florida's system of teacher education.
This document is the fourth in this annual survey series, summarizing
the data from the nine individual universities on a system-wide basis. It is
hoped that consideration of this data as a quantitative foundation will be
worthwhile in future manpower projections and program design.
Number of Student Teachers
The general picture of student teachers in the State University System
is set forth in Table 1, comparing the individual university totals and each
university's per cent of the state total over the three-year period from 1972-73
to 1974-75.
As Table 1 indicates, the number of student teacher placements dropped
from the 1973-74 total of 5,678 to a total of 5,509 in 1974-75, a loss of 169
students. Only three of the nine universities, University of Florida, Florida
International University, and Florida A & M University, showed.numerical
increases which are reflected in increases of 2%, 1% and 1% of the state total
respectively.
4
The University of South Florida in 1974-75 retained the number-one spot
gained in 1973-74, but lost one point in its percentage of the state total (Table
1). The top three, University of South Florida, Florida State University, and
the University of Florida, still combine to equal the 1973-74 total of 55% of
the state's student teachers, but their individual percentages changed. The
only position rearrangement was Florida A & M University which moved from ninth
place to eighth.

Geographic Distribution of Student Teachers
The operating principle has been to try to assign student teaching
interns in close enough proximity to district and university personnel to allow
for effective supervision during the field experience period. Accordingly, as
well as because the universities themselves are located in the larger population
concentrations which offer a greater number of opportunities for placement, the
trend has been toward very uneven distribution of student teachers within the
State of Florida. This year is no exception and, in fact, is somewhat more
unevenly distributed than last year (Figure 1).
Last year, 1973-74, in comparison with 1972-73, showed a slight increase
in distribution (1973-74 Survey of Student Teaching in the State University
System, page 3). In 1974-75, however, only the bigger counties showed an
increase: six or more student teachers were reported in 41 counties in 1973-74;
in 1974-75, 41 ceunties had seven or more student teachers with another two
counties showing a total of six (Figure 1). The number of counties with one but
less than seven student teachers decreased from 20 to 14. The number of counties
with no student teachers doubled, from six to twelve; seven of those twelve
counties (Franklin, Suwanee, Gilchrist, Flagler, Indian River, Charlotte and
Collier) were included in the one to six student teacher category last year.
The six top-ranking counties (Hillsborough, Alachua, Dade, Leon, Pinellas and
Broward), although not identical to the top six of 1973-74, again accounted for
nearly 60 per cent of the student teachers assigned in 1974-75 (Table 2).
Tables 3A and 3B confirm that a county's student teacher population is
principally determined by the proximity of a university. For example, 94.17%
of the student teachers assigned in Hillsborough County came from the University
of South Florida; a startling 99.86% of the student teachers in Alachua County
were assigned by the University of Florida; and Florida State University and
Florida A & M University, located in Leon County, supplied all but two of that
county's 572 student teachers.

* STATE TOTAL:

Again in 1974-75, the older institutions, Florida A & M University,
Florida State University, and the University of Florida, reported distribution
nearly state-wide in scope (Figures 3, 4 and 5 in Appendix A). The newer
universities (Figures 6 - 11 in Appendix A) continued in their more regional
distribution with the notable exception of the University of South Florida
(Figure 6) which placed students in 15 counties.
Florida State University was again the most diversified, distributing
90 per cent of its student teachers into 14 of the top 20 counties ranked in
order of the number of student teachers placed (Table 4). In contrast, the
University of North Florida was represented in only one of the top 20, with
84 per cent of its total in Duval County. All the other universities fell
within these two extremes of the distribution spectrum.
Distribution of Student Teachers Across Subject Areas
Out of 30 areas of specialization tabulated, nearly 96 per cent of the
student teachers placed in 1974-75 did their student teaching in one of 17 areas
(Tables 5A and 5B). Areas such as Special Education, Reading, Distributive
Education, and Vocational Education accounted for the remaining 4.07 per cent
of the total. Over 53 per cent of the state total specialized in one of three
areas: Elementary and Early Childhood Education, Physical Education and Health,
and Social Science Education.
Distribution within subject areas indicated a certain degree of program
uniformity: 14 of the 30 areas were represented in six or more of the nine
institutions, but percentages varied. For example, all nine universities reported
student teachers in Elementary and Early Childhood Education, with five of the
nine reporting 9 per cent or more of the state total. In other areas, distribu-
tion was more uneven. For example, only four universities reported student
teachers in Vocational-Technical Education, with 82 per cent of those student

teachers assigned by the University of West Florida and the University of North
Florida.
Elementary and Early Childhood Education was still overwhelmingly the
largest category, even though this year's 35.02 per cent of the state total
represents a drop from the 37.48 per cent in 1973-74.
Tables 6 - 35 (Appendix B) trace the number of student teachers in each
reported subject area assigned in each county by the individual universities,
as well as the county totals in each subject and the county percentage of the
state total in each subject area. Elementary and Early Childhood Education was
again the largest category, with its student teachers assigned in 50 Florida
counties and three out-of-state locations (Tables 10A and 10B). The top five
counties in this area are the same as last year, but their order is rearranged:
Alachua County led the group with 271, or 14 per cent of the state total of
1,929, followed by Hillsborough (237 or 12%), Leon (222 or 12%), Dade (201 or
10%), and Duval (128 or 7%).
Three other subject areas showed student teachers assigned in 30 or
more counties: Social Science (Table 27), 37 Florida counties and three out-of-
state locations; Physical Education and Health (Table 24), 31 counties and one
out-of-state location; and English (Table 11), 30 Florida counties and one out-
of-state location.
Students in seven subject areas were placed in 20 to 29 counties: Art
Education (Table 7), 28 counties and one out-of-state location; Music Education
(Table 23), 26 counties; Math Education (Table 21), 25 counties; Science (Table
26), 23 counties; Exceptional Child Education of the Mentally Retarded (Table 13),
23 counties; Foreign Language (Table 15), 21 Florida counties and two out-of-
state locations; and Business Education (Table 8), 22 Florida counties.
Interns in another seven areas were assigned in 10 to 19 counties:
Industrial Arts (Table 19); Library Science (Table 20); Specific Learning Disa-
12
15
bilities (Table 14); Home Economics (Table 17); Speech (Table 32); Distributive
Education (Table 9); and Speech Pathology and Communicative Disorders (Table 33).
The remaining twelve subject areas, or 40 per cent of the total number of subject
areas had students assigned in fewer than ten counties.
SUMMARY
In the 1972-73 academic year, the nine state universities placed a totalof 4,936 student teachers; in 1973-74, a total of 5,678; and in this past year,1974-75, a total of 5,509. Each university's share of the 1974-75 total isindicated in the following percentages: University of South 21orida, 21%;Florida State University, 18%; University of Florida, 16%; Florida InternationalUniversity, 10%; Florida Atlantic University, 9%; University of West Florida, 8%;Florida Technological University, 7%; Florida A & M University, 6%; and theUniversity of North Florida, 5%. More than half (55%) of the state total for1974-75 were placed by the top three, University of South Florida, Florida StateUniversity and University of Florida.
Ninety-six per cent of the student teachers specialized in one of 17areas, while more than 53 per cent came from the three areas of Elementary andEarly Childhood, Physical Education and Health, and Social Sciences., Somesubject areas were divided rather uniformly, such as Elementary and Early r!--rid-hood Education with five of the nine institutions reporting nine per cent %-more of the state total. Other more specialized subject areas were concentz,,edin fewer institutions.
Counties in which universities are located, as well as those immediatelyadjacent, confirm the previous trend toward a heavier student teacher concentra-tion. The counties which contain universities (Hillsborough, Alachua, Dade, Leon,Orange, Duval, Palm Beach and Escambia) accounted for 67.79 per cent of the statetotal. Also the percentage of student teachers from a parLieular university ineach county is usually determined by that university's location in relation tothe county. Thus, 94.17 per cent of the student teachers in Hillsborough Countycame from the University of South Florida, 99.86 per cent in Alachua County camefrom the University of Florida, and 99.65 per cent of the student teachers inLeon County came from Florida State University or Florida A & M University.
Thus the placement pattern in 1974-75 tends to confirm previous trendsin that universities use closer geographic concentration in order to providethe maximum cost effectiveness while maintaining quality supervision controlwithin the framework of available positions for placement of student teachers.
