HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION• Eliminate all sources of sparks or

flame (including smoking, openflames, or work that can causesparks) in the areas where fuel ismixed, poured, or stored.

• Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area;store fuel in a cool, dry, well ventilatedplace; use an approved, marked con-tainer for all fuel purposes.

• Do not smoke while handling fuel orwhile operating the unit.

• Do not fill fuel tank while engine isrunning.

• Make sure the unit is properly as-sembled and in good operating con-dition.

• Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up fuelspills before starting the engine.

• Move at least 10 feet (3 meters)away from fuel and fueling site beforestarting engine.

• Always store gasoline in a containerapproved for flammable liquids.

OPERATE YOUR UNIT SAFELY

DANGER: RISK OF CUT; KEEPHANDS AWAY FROM BLADE - Blademoves momentarily after the trigger isreleased. Do not attempt to clear awaycut material when the blade is in mo-tion. Make sure the ON/OFF switch iS inthe OFF position, the spark plug wire isdisconnected, and the blade hasstopped moving before removingjammed material from the cuttingblade. Do not grab or hold the unit bythe cutting blade.• Inspect unit before each use for

worn, loose, missing, or damagedparts. Do not use until unit is inproper working order.

• Keep outside surfaces free from oiland fuel.

• Never start or run engine inside aclosed room or building. Breathingexhaust fumes can kill.

• Avoid dangerous environments. Donot use in unventilated areas orwhere explosive vapors or carbonmonoxide build up could be present.

• Do not overreach or use from unsta-ble surfaces such as ladders, trees,steep slopes, rooftops, etc. Keep firmfooting and balance at all times.

• Do not raise unit above your shoul-ders; the cutting blade can comedangerously close to your body.

• Always keep unit in front of your body.Keep all parts of your body away fromthe cutting blade.

MAINTAIN YOUR UNIT PROPERLY• Have all maintenance and service

not explained in this manual per-formed by a Sears Service Center.

• Disconnect spark plug before per-forming maintenance except for car-buretor adjustments.

• Do not use a cutting blade that isbent, warped, cracked, broken, ordamaged in any other way. Haveworn or damaged parts replaced byyour Sears Service Center.

• Use only recommended Craftsmancutting blades and replacementparts; use of any other parts mayvoid your warranty and cause dam-age to your unit.

• Empty fuel tank before storing the unit.Use up fuel left in carburetor by startingengine and letting it run until it stops.

• Hand carry the unit with the enginestopped and the muffler and cuttingblade away from your body.

• Allow engine to cool, empty the fueltank, and secure the unit before stor-ing or transporting it in a vehicle.

• Do not store the unit or fuel in aclosed area where fuel vapors canreach sparks or an open flame fromhot water heaters, electric motors orswitches, furnaces, etc.

• Store the unit so the cutting bladecannot accidentally cause injury.

• Store in a dry area out of reach ofchildren.

ON/OFF SWITCHThe ON/OFF SWITCH is used to stop theengine. To stop the engine, move theswitch to the OFF position.

CHOKEThe CHOKE helps to supply fuel to theengine to aid in cold starting. Activate thechoke by moving choke lever to the de-sired position. See STARTINGYOUR EN-GINE for complete starting information.

PRIMER BULBThe PRIMER BULB removes air from thefuel lines and fills them with fuel. Thisallows you to start the engine with few-er pulls on the starter rope. Activate theprimer bulb by pressing it and allowingit to return to its original form.THROTTLE TRIGGERThe THROTTLETRIGGER controls enginespeed. Squeeze the trigger for full speedoperation; release it for idle speed.

_WARNING: Muffler is very hotduring and after use. Do not touch themuffler or allow combustible materialsuch as dry grass or fuel to do so.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

_WARNING: Be sure to read the

fuel information in the safety rulesbefore you begin. If you do notunderstand the safety rules, do notattempt to fuel your unit. Call1-800-235-5878.

FUELING ENGINE

_WARNING: Remove fuel capslowly when refueling.This engine is certified to operate onunleaded gasoline. Before operation,gasoline must be mixed with a goodquality synthetic 2-cycle air-cooledengine oil. We recommend Craftsmanbrand synthetic oil. Mix gasoline and oilat a ratio of 40:1. A 40:1 ratio isobtained by mixing 3.2 ounces of oilwith 1 gallon of unleaded gasoline.Included with this hedge trimmer is a3.2 ounce container of oil. Pour the

entire contents of this container into 1gallon of gasoline to achieve the properfuel mixture. DO NOT USE automotiveoil or boat oil. These oils will causeengine damage. When mixing fuel,follow instructions printed on container.Once oil is added to gasoline, shakecontainer momentarily to assure thatthe fuel is thoroughly mixed. Alwaysread and follow the safety rules relatingto fuel before fueling your unit.IMPORTANTExperience indicates that alcoholblended fuels (called gasohol or usingethanol or methanol) can attract mois-ture which leads to separation andformation of acids during storage. Acid-ic gas can damage the fuel system ofan engine while in storage. To avoidengine problems, empty the fuel sys-tem before storage for 30 days or long-er. Drain the gas tank, start the engineand let it run until the fuel lines and car-buretor are empty. Use fresh fuel nextseason. Never use engine or carbure-tor cleaner products in the fuel tank orpermanent damage may occur.See the STORAGE section for additionalinformation.

essary to effectively cut hedges foroptimal hedge trimmer performance,

• Never attempt to use this hedge trim-mer to cut hedges that have anybranches with a diameter larger than7/16",

STOPPING YOUR ENGINE• To stop the engine, move the ON/OFF

switch to the OFF position.BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE• Fuel engine. Move at least 10 feet (3

meters) away from the fueling site.• Hold the unit on the ground in the

starting position as shown. Supportunit so the blade is off of the groundand away from trees, bushes, on-lookers, etc.

• press the throttle lock-out;• squeeze and hold throttle trigger;• press and hold throttle lock;• release the throttle trigger

5. Pull starter rope handle sharply untilengine sounds as if it is trying to run,but do not pull rope more than 6times.

6. Move the choke lever to the HALFCHOKE position.

7. Pull starter rope sharply until the en-gine runs, but no more than 6 pulls.NOTE: If the engine doesn't start af-ter 6 pulls (at the HALF CHOKE posi-tion), check to make sure the ON/OFF switch is in the ON position.Move the choke lever to the FULLCHOKE position and press the prim-er bulb 6 times; pull the starter rope2 more times. Move the choke leverto the HALF CHOKE position and pullthe starter rope until the engineruns, but no more than 6 more pulls.If the engine still doesn't start, it isprobably flooded. Proceed toSTARTING A FLOODED ENGINE.

8. Once the engine starts, allow it torun 10 seconds, then move thechoke lever to the OFF CHOKE posi-tion. Allow the unit to run for 30 moreseconds at the OFF CHOKE positionbefore squeezing and releasing thethrottle trigger to release the throttlelock. NOTE: If engine dies with thechoke lever in the OFF CHOKE posi-

STARTING A WARM ENGINE1. Move the ON/OFF switch to the ON

position.2. Slowly press the primer bulb 6

times.3. Move the choke ]ever to the HALF

CHOKE position.4. Engage the throttle lock as directed

in STARTING A COLD ENGINE.NOTE: Keep the throttle lock engageduntil the engine starts.5. Pull starter rope sharply until engine

runs, but no more than 5 pulls.6. Allow the engine to run 10 seconds,

then move choke lever to the OFFCHOKE position.

7. Release the throttle lock by squeez-ing and releasing the throttle trigger.

NOTE: If engine has not started, pullstarter rope 5 more pulls. If engine stilldoes not run, it is probably flooded. Pro-ceed to STARTINGA FLOODED ENGINE.STARTING A FLOODED ENGINEFlooded engines can be started byplacing the ON/OFF switch in the ONposition and the choke lever in the OFFCHOKE position and engaging thethrottle lock as directed in the START-ING A COLD ENGINE section; then, pullthe rope to clear the engine of excessfuel. Starting could require pulling thestarter rope many times depending onhow badly the unit is flooded.If the unit still doesn't start, refer to theTROUBLESHOOTINGTABLE or call1-800-235-5878.

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

_WARNING: Keep others awaywhen making idle speed adjustments.The blade will be moving during mostof this procedure. Wear your protectiveequipment and observe all safety pre-cautions. When making adjustments,use a screwdriver short enough to

keep your hands behind the hand-guard and away from the blade. Aftermaking adjustments, the blade mustnot move at idle speed.The carburetor has been carefully setat the factory, Adjustments may benecessary if you notice any of the fol-lowing conditions:• Engine will not idle when the throttle

is released.• The blade moves at idle,Keep others away when making idlespeed adjustments. Make adjustmentswith the unit resting on a level surfacefree of debris that can be caught in thehedge trimmer blade. Serious injury tothe operator and others can occur if the

carburetor is not properly adjusted.Keep all parts of your body away fromthe blade and muffler.Idle Speed AdjustmentAllow engine to idle, Adjust speed untilengine runs without blade moving (idletoo fast) or engine stalling (idle speedtoo slow).• Turn idle speed screw clockwise to

increase engine speed if enginestalls or dies.

• Turn idle speed screw counterclock-wise to decrease engine speed if theblade moves at idle.

_WARNING: Recheck the idle

speed after each adjustment. Theblade must not move at idle speed toavoid serious injury to the operator orothers.

unit before storing or transporting.• Store unit and fuel in a well ventilated

area where fuel vapors cannot reachsparks or open flames from waterheaters, electric motors or switches,furnaces, etc.

• Store unit with all guards in place.Position unit so that any sharp objectcannot accidentally cause injury.

• Store unit and fuel well out of thereach of children.

SEASONAL STORAGEPrepare unit for storage at end of sea-son or if it will not be used for 30 daysor more.If your unit is to be stored for a periodof time:• Clean the entire unit.• Store in a clean dry area.• Clean all parts and check for damage.

Have damaged parts repaired or re-placed by your Sears Service Center.

• Lightly oil external metal surfaces, in-cluding the blade.

To oil the blade:• Stop the engine and allow blade to

come to a complete stop.• Ensure ON/OFF switch is in the OFF

position.• Disconnect the spark plug wire.• Apply a light machine oil along the

edge of the top strap as shown.

To0?! 7FUEL SYSTEMUnder FUELING ENGINE in the OPERA-TION section of this manual, see mes-sage labeled IMPORTANT regardingthe use of gasohol in your engine.Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alterna-tive in minimizing the formation of fuelgum deposits during storage. Add stabi-lizer to gasoline in fuel tank or fuel stor-age container. Follow the mix instructionsfound on stabilizer container. Run engineat least 5 minutes after adding stabilizer.Craftsman 40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (aircooled) is already blended with fuelstabilizer. If you do not use this Searsoil, you can add a fuel stabilizer to yourfuel tank.ENGINE• Remove spark plug and pour 1 tea-

spoon of 40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (aircooled) through the spark plug open-ing. Slowly pull the starter rope 8 to10 times to distribute oil.

• Replace spark plug with new one ofrecommended type and heat range(see REPLACE SPARK PLUG section).

Recomen-damos el aceite de sint6tico de la mar-ca Craftsman. Mezcle la gasolina conel aceite en la proporciSn 40:1. Se ob-tiene una proporci6n de 40:1 mezclan-do 3,2 onzas de aceite con cada galSnde gasolina sin plomo. Se incluye conesta aparato un recipiente de 3,2 on-zas de aceite. Adiera el contenido en-tero de este recipiente en 1 galSn degasolina para alcanzar la mezcla apro-piada del combustible. NO USE aceitepara autom6viles ni para barcas. Estosaceites dafiar_n el motor. AVISO: Si el motor no ar-ranca despu6s del sexto tir6n de lacuerda de arranque (con la palancadel cebador en la posici6n HALFCHOKE), verifique que el interruptorON/OFF est_ en la posici6n ON.Mueva la palanca del cebador a laposici6n FULL CHOKE y oprima elbombeador 6 veces; tire firmementedel mango de la cuerda de arran-que otras 2 veces. 8. Una vez que el motor arranca, per-mita que el motor marche por 10segundos, luego mueva la palancadel cebador a la posici6n OFFCHOKE. Permita que el motormarche por otros 30 segundos conla palanca en la posici6n OFFCHOKE, entonces suelte el cierredel acelerador apretando y luegosoltando el gatillo acelerador.AVIS0: Si el motor se cala con lapalanca del cebador en la posici6nOFF CHOKE, mueva la palanca a laposici6n HALF CHOKE y tire de lacuerda de arranque hasta que elmotor se ponga en marcha, pero nom_s de 6 tirones.

6. Reponga las piezas.

SISTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLEVea el mensaje marcado comoIMPORTANTE, que se reflere al uso decombustibles con mezcla de alcohol ensu aparato, en la secci6n de USO, bajoABASTECIMIENTO DEL MOTOR en estemanual.Los estabilizadores de combustible sonuna alternativa aceptable para minimizarla formaci6n de dep6sitos de gorna du-rante el almacenaje, ASada estabilizadora la gasolina en el tanque de combusti-ble o en el recipiente para almacenar elmismo, Siga las instrucciones de mezclaque se encuentran impresas en elenvase. Ponga el motor en marcha yd6jelo en marcha por unos 5 minutosdespu6s de haberle puesto estabilizador.El aceite Craftsman 40:1 para motoresde 2 tiempos (enfriados a aire) vienemezclado con estabilizador decombustible. Si no se usa este aceitede Sears, usted podr_ afiadir estabili-zador al tanque de combustible.MOTOR• Retire la bujia y vierta una cucharadi-

ta de aceite 40:1 para motores a 2tiempos (enfriados a aire) por laabertura para la bujia. Lentamente,tire de la cuerda de arranque de 8 a10 veces para distribuir el aceite.

• Cambie la bujia por una nueva del tipoy de la gama de calor recomendados(vea la secci6n CAMBIE LA BUJIA).

• Limpie el filtro de aire.• Examine toda el aparato para verificar

que no haya tornilles, tuercas ni per-nos sueltos. Cambie todas las piezasdafiadas, quebradas o gastadas.

• AI principio de la pr6xima temporada,use exclusivamente combustiblefresno con la proporci6n correcta degasolina a aceite.
