(1) PROVIDE A DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY On Oct. 11th, I brought an elite classical music trio of professional musicians to perform and demonstrate classical music to my Music Appreciation class. The Singer Chamber Players trio featured cellist Virginia Kron, pianist Miriam Arichea, and David Singer – who was principal clarinetist with the famous Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in New York City.

The Dec. 6th performance featured the Modul8 Saxophone Quartet, who demonstrated jazz, ragtime, swing, pop, and classical music styles for our students. The mini-lectures during the performances introduced students to the topics and helped them to grasp the essence of the performances right away. The Q&A sections between the students and the performers contributed greatly to students’ learning experiences. Faculty and community members also attended the sessions. (2) HOW DID THE ACTIVITY RELATE TO A COURSE(S) AND/OR LEARNING OBJECTIVES?

Our PAMU 100 learns about music and composers of the Baroque era, the Classical style period, the Romantic era, and jazz music and film music. Our guest artists customized a special program of music for our classes to feature the composers and musical styles from those time periods. Our musical guests prefaced each performance with a description of the composition’s form, rhythm, and other compositional features and style elements. Our classes are learning about all those musical elements, so getting our guests’ expert commentary was very valuable to the students.

This LIVE musical demonstration brought all those sounds and concepts home to the students via an up-close and personal experience. Our students were also able to ask questions of our guest artists. Overall, these concert experiences addressed our Learning Outcomes very directly and very effectively. Our guest musicians also answered questions about their own development as young musicians, and their practicing schedule. That information was enlightening for our music students who attended these two events.

(3) WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE STRENGTHS OF THE ACTIVITY?

The strength of this activity was having very experienced world-class performers visit our campus for two days of musical presentations for our students. The artistic strength of these performances and our guests’ expert commentary about the compositions being performed, gave our students an insider’s view of the work of the world’s most famous composers. rhythms of each composition gave our students a further insight into the music. Our students also had a chance to ask questions of the visiting artists.

(4) WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE/WERE THE ACTIVITY’S WEAKNESSES?

The feedbacks were all very positive. One thing we are looking to improve is to seek for a better performance space when we have these excellent guest performances on campus, so that we can better serve our campus community. (5) HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THIS ACTIVITY FOR NEXT TIME? We have done our best to maximize the extraordinary experience we could bring to our students in our classes. My goal would be keep improving on promoting such events to a broader audience in our campus community. (6) WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THE PROCESS?

I have hosted about 75 of these musical events during my years of teaching at CI. This semester further reinforced to me how very important it is for our students to SEE and HEAR these types of art music LIVE. Very few of our students ever see live musicians perform, so this was an excellent way to provide the students with real performances of the musical styles that we teach them about in class. (7) WHAT ARE STUDENT RESPONSES TO THE ACTIVITY? Q23 - How did this activity relate to the content and/or learning outcomes of the courses that you are taking? How did this activity relate to the content and/or learning outcomes of the courses that you are taking? We were studying music at the time so it was beneficial to hear live music.

I wasn't able to attend.

I do not know Our main focus in class has been live performances. Seeing a live musical performance allowed us to apply the concepts we have been talking about to a real world event. It's happening in class

Our music section of class

I can’t think of anything

We learned about the notes in class the previous session. The chamber group’s performance was extremely helpful, because we were currently discussing orchestras and chamber groups: how to conduct them, how they are arranged, what instruments they include, what music they play, what it’s like to be part of one, etc. Having a professional trio available to play for us and answer questions was a lovely treat! We are studying music and musical theatre, and this provided a real life example of how music can make an impact in the community, and bring a community together. We were studying music and the rhythm and beats

It related to the current time period’s music that our class was studying

The artists performed Baroque and Classical pieces, exactly what we've been studying. Currently studying baroque, classical, and romantic styles. These styles were demonstrated by the Singer Chamber Players. Gave feeling to what music during the Baroque and Classical period sounded like and performed live. We are currently learning about the classical and romantic period in music containing Mozart. This concert helped me see what a real music concert looked like. It was very informational and enjoyable. We are learning about classical music in class and what styles and what technique the composer used to change the mood in a piece. A performance of music from several different musical periods by important composers. We had currently been talking about the Baroque and Classical periods of music within class and the music played was directly related to that. We are currently focusing on the classical/romantic music era in class so this classical

- 12 -

performance fit in perfectly.

The concert helped me understand the music of the Baroque Period easily. It's a different experience when you hear the music of an era live in person compared to watching videos. We look at the history of music and the culture which helped us with the class because it gave us an idea of how the music back then was played and performed. They played music from composers and time periods we are talking about in class. In my Music Appreciation course, I am currently focusing on the music of the Baroque Period and of it's great musicians. The musicians played music pieces that came from great, famous musicians from centuries ago. Also, the musicians taught about the history of the music period my course is leaning about. Listening to the famous musical pieces live creates a more immersive learning experience that gives me much more appreciation of the music from the Baroque Period. We are studying the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic music.

Q20 - What do you consider the positives/ strengths of this activity?

What do you consider the positives/ strengths of this activity?

I liked being able to interact with the musicians, and it was nice to hear this sort of music. I am sure it was especially cool for people that have never heard instruments like this being played live before. na

Everything that we did was beneficial The most significant strength of this activity was the Q and A. We were allowed to ask the musicians questions about their life and how they became full time performers. The musicians all had interesting and compelling answers for each question. Nice music

Hearing the different songs

Great interaction with audience and performers. Having a professional, experienced group to answer our questions about pursuing a career in the live arts. And actually hearing the different kinds of tempos, themes, moods, tones of the pieces, because we are also learning about that. The tone quality of all the players were strong and they had a good variety of pieces that reflected different emotions and did a good job presenting the history of each piece. Showed students what we were learning about first hand, gave us insight to their profession

It felt authentic and professional alongside being skillfully played.

The artists were well practiced and very professional.

Great music. Very high level. Amazing teaching and explanation of the styles and pieces. Live performances provide a quality listening experience of music from the specific time period of classical, baroque and romantic. The performances also give listeners a taste of performers' style and variances of the original piece/song. It was executed beautifully and the players bid such a fantastic job,

This concert was positive because it was interactive and we got to ask questions.

I think that doing this we see what we are learning in class set in motion.

Incredible performance. Musicians displayed phenomenal talent and great knowledge. It was very nice to hear live orchestra music, especially for me, someone who has never been to a type of concert that involves music like this. The performers were also very interactive with the audience, which made it more informational and a better experience overall. The musicians were amazing and kept us very engaged.

The concert helped me use the things i have learned so far into a real life situation. Hearing and seeing the music of the Baroque period in person gives us a better understanding of the music. The artists were very skilled and they gave an outstanding performance. I would consider being able to hear music like this live. I had never heard some of these live so it helped understand them better. Listening to the live performances creates a greater, learning experience than simply listening to music online. After a musical piece was finished, the musicians taught an overview of the musical period my Music Appreciation course is currently studying. Another strength is that the musicians talked about their lives as professional musicians, which gave me some insight. You get an amazing feel for the music when heard in person rather than through headphones or speakers.

Were there any weaknesses of this activity? (If not, leave blank.)

na

Id wish there was a bigger art in listening to the piano.

None really. One major key is to eep the audience entertained and make jokes and have the audience enjoy the show and the performers.

Suggestions or comments for future activities?

na

I would suggest more events like this one. It was very entertaining and informative.

None

I would love to see dancers, that reflect different cultural dances.

More concerts please!

What about current music, or music of the rock era? Such as the 60s and on.

I would get a concert that played songs a little closer to our generation.

N/A

I think this was a great learning activity and something that related directly to the class.

You all are doing great

Have more concerts that relate to the things we are learning.

None, this activity was an excellent, learning experience.

More concerts with a handout about the composers, pieces, and the people performing them.

Q23 - How did this activity relate to the content and/or learning outcomes of the courses that you are taking? How did this activity relate to the content and/or learning outcomes of the courses that you are taking? It related because we were learning about jazz styles

Live demonstration of professional musicians playing musical instruments. It allowed me to listen to music in a live performance and experience the differences between studio recorded music and live music we are learning and have been learning about jazz music and different instruments like the saxophone. Performance of contemporary and classic music arranged for a jazz style quartet.

It showed me what a real saxiphone quartet looked like. It gave context to the different types of instrumentation of saxophones as well as gave a good example of swing music to the class. it's not, but I'm taking this to be a full-time student and because it's fun subject.

Played music from era that we've learned about It showed us how the music we have been learning about is played in live instead of just listening and learning about it. It showcased different styles of music The music directly related to what we have been learning in class. We usually always listen to recordings of music in class, but it was so nice to hear it in person and to have that in-person interaction with the musicians. It was an in person example of different music styles.

Closely related.

It relates because we covered jazz in the previous chapter The Sax Quartet related to my course because music appreciation his the learning of musics origins, form where it started. Many of the performances used artist that created first of it kind. We've studied a lot of the music pieces they performed.

Q20 - What do you consider the positives/ strengths of this activity?

What do you consider the positives/ strengths of this activity?

The experience Learning a little about the musicians' background of their professional careers and listening to live music. Live music allows the listener to interpret familiar songs and pieces differently with sections of the songs having different improvisations giving me the ability to appreciate the piece even more. the music was very beautiful and brought a new element of learning, through our ears.

Great musicians, fun performance, great musical choices.

The music was very good and the explanations were good as well.

It was authentic and professional. The positives is that you get to experience music in it's true nature dynamics vs over a video recording of that session. It was fun and played music that was very intresting

It was an amazing show with very experienced musicians.

explanations of songs performed, variety of pieces First of all, hearing music in-person changes a persons outlook on music. I feel like it compares to nothing else and helps you recognize the characteristics and elements of music we learned in class. I also thought it was nice how students could ask questions to the musicians. It’s nice to see classical music played by four saxophones and it’s nuce to here live music.

Very fun to listen to a sax quartet

it was very entertaining to watch and helped understand saxophones a bit more.

The songs chosen were great. They felt familiar and were soothing. We got to hear some of the pieces that were written so long ago live, with new and modern twists to them.

Were there any weaknesses of this activity? (If not, leave blank.)

Not being able to play all of the listed songs within the allotted time is a bummer. I wished we got to all the songs. Only two of the songs on the list weren't played, I would have liked to listen to both live.

Suggestions or comments for future activities?

Please keep this activity going! maybe plan more activities with different instruments next semesters. they were very informational and fun Keep em comin'

More concerts would be fun.

Maybe add piano or drums? although that may contradict the point of it being a sax quartet. If possible try and get different instruments than the usual common one. For example, maybe a have a xylophone musician, sitar musician, or accordion player musician preform. I think these activities overall, are a great tool for learning.

More saxophone quartets!
