In many ways, ironically, there’s no institution more countercultural than the church during the Christmas season. At Riverside instead of singing Christmas carols starting after Halloween, we celebrate the season of Advent beginning four weeks before Christmas with hymns like “O Come, O Come, Emanuel, and “Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus.” Instead of decorating with the red and green of Christmas, purple serves as our color scheme. The season of Advent also changes our calendar. Instead of beginning the new year on January 1st, Advent (which means coming) marks the beginning of our new year, paradoxically focusing on the end of things when God will final- ly fulfill and redeem all of creation. As I write this the world is grieving the loss of untold numbers in the Philippines after a massive Typhoon swept through their country. This event reminds us once again that we must face the tragic and painful truth that life is full of both joy and deep suffering. The new hope of Advent promises that in God’s time “all will be well, all manner of things will be well.” Starting the year trusting that the end of things is in God’s hands, (and not just our own) liberates us to live each day more fully present and awake to the coming of God into our world. Or, as T.S. Eliot penned in Four Quartets, “In our beginning is our end.” The color the church uses for this season is purple; the color of repentance in Lent but also the color of royalty in the days of old. It is also the color one gets when the two primary colors of red and blue come together, as in red states and blue states. In Advent we celebrate purple as the Jesus state that moves us past our politics and ideologies and towards each other as the one body of Christ. How countercultural is that! ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTSAdvent Series: The Church in PurpleRev. Steve Goyer, Bill Scheu, Jamie HoenerDecember 1- December 22Montreat Conference Center recently hosted a conference, The Church in Purple. The color purple has great significance for the church and was used as a metaphor for exploring how Christians with differing views can come together as a community. In this class, we will view the conference’s main presentations by pairs of presenters who come from different camps yet found deep fellowship together.

• Barbara Wheeler, former president of Auburn Seminary in New York City, and Richard Mouw, former president of Fuller Seminary. They became friends at Columbia Seminary and have continued their relationship even though they are on opposite sides of many issues.

• Thomas Daniel, a pastor of a new church expression, and Pen Peery, a pastor of a “First” Presbyterian Church - seminary classmates who almost always found themselves on opposite sides of issues yet found they were bound together.

December 1-Daniel and Peery Part 1; December 8-Wheeler and Mouw Part 1; December 15-Wheeler and Mouw Part 2; December 22- Daniel and Peery Part 2.

Steve Goyer and Bill Scheu, who attended and presented at the conference, as well as Jamie Hoener, will facilitate discussion based on these conference presentations.

Meal On Wheels – Celebrates 40 years at Riverside Presbyterian in 2014! It’s a tough job to provide a variety of tasty, well-balanced meals for a family. It takes time, planning, energy and creativity. It’s an even tougher job to provide those meals if you’re alone and not in the best of health. When you’re alone, you miss the companionship mealtime offers. The effort of meal preparation hardly seems worthwhile. The loneliness leads to poor meal planning which contributes to poor health. The Meals on Wheels ministry reaches out to the elderly in our community to provide low cost, tasty, well-balanced, and warm mid-day meals. The Meals on Wheels (MOW) program at Riverside Presbyterian was adopted in the fall of 1974, serving the recipients in the Riverside, Avondale, Murray hill and Ortega neighborhoods. They are currently delivering 54 meals( up from 28 in 2012), Monday through Friday, including holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas). These are hot meals consisting of a main course (chicken, roast beef, hamburgers, hot dogs and sometimes a cold plate), two sides, a fruit (banana, orange, apple), a carton of milk or orange juice, a slice of bread and pad of butter. The meals are prepared in the kitchen of the Cathedral Foundation, a division of the county wide MOW program, who prepare 1,500 meals county-wide daily. The cost of the meal is $2.90. If the recipient cannot afford to pay for this meal, members of Riverside Presbyterian Church have donated money to subsidize these patrons. We also accept any donations to this worthwhile ministry. The meals are delivered by volunteer drivers who are members of Riverside Presbyterian Church, Murray Hill Presbyterian Church, Murray Hill Methodist Church, Murray Hill Baptist Church, St. Mark’s Episcopal church and Good Shepherd Episcopal church. The Director of the Program is Rev. Earle Sickles. Volunteer drivers and substitutes are always needed. Contact Earle at 388-8187 (office), 553-6219 (cell) or [email protected]

Caring Tree Sunday is December 8 This year, we will supply Christmas gifts to 300 children in our community through the Riverside tradition of Caring Tree. The Tree with suggested gift tags can be found by the church office and in the Sanctuary. All of us, who are able, are asked to take an ornament(s) tag from the Caring Tree and follow the directions on the back of the tag. Bring your wrapped gift to church on Sunday, December 8, CARING TREE SUNDAY. We’ll also need an army of volunteers to sort, check, bag and deliver the gifts that afternoon. If you can help for an hour after church or the whole afternoon, your time and effort is needed and appreciated and, we promise, you’ll have a great time! Questions: Jo Pratt-Dannals, 356-9224 or [email protected].

A Real Giver Mr. Eldon “Roney” Hepler is 86 years old and delivers meals for the Jacksonville Florida Meals On Wheels Murray Hill United Methodist Church drop-site. Mr. Hepler started delivering meals with encouragement from his wife Jane, who he describes as “a real giver.” They delivered meals together for 15 years until she recently passed away. A few months ago, Mr. Hepler woke in the middle of the night with an urge to write. Out came a poem after poem after poem. “It was like I had all these feelings in me and they needed to be free,” he said. Here is one of Mr. Hepler’s favorite pieces-a poem about his experience with Meals On Wheels and how it makes him feel. “It’s not fancy, just a simple poem, but I felt it when I wrote it. Mr. Hepler says, “I take meals on day a week and have every week for 15 years. And those Wednesdays-the day I deliver, is still my favorite day of the week. It just feels right to help people.

November 5, 2013“…Holy Father, protect them in Your name that You have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.” John 17:11

Dear Rev. Dr. Goyer, Staff, Session and Members of Riverside Presbyterian Church, We are so thankful for your support! On July 9th, church leaders, government officials, school children, people from all walks of life gathered in Yei town to recognize South Sudan’s 2nd year of independence. The celebratory crowd made many footprints in the dusty town square, yet those marks rested on top of knee prints left from the day before. July 8th beckoned South Sudanese together for a National Day of Prayer. People in nice clothes, not-soniceclothes, military uniforms, church t-shirts, and mother’s union dresses all gathered in the center of town for prayer. A group of women leaders came to RECONCILE International’s center prepare their hearts for July eighth. They poured out their troubles and then committed themselves to pray

and work to see change. The women proclaimed through drama (photo below) their desire to work together to carry one another’s heavy burdens. RECONCILE trained them to address conflict and trauma in their communities. Then, on the National Day of Prayer, they join their voices to ask God for a spirit of unity. The South Sudanese felt encouraged by each other’s presence, and in a similar manner, our family is encouraged by your presence and prayers in our lives. Thank you for your partnership with us in the difficult and rewarding work of peacebuilding in a war-scarred nation. Thank you also for your generous contributions this year totaling one-thousand, onehundred sixty-six dollars, which allow us to join with our sisters and brothers in South Sudan who are praying and uniting to overcome their challenges. We are deeply grateful for and humbled by your partnership,

Advent

Something New On (Some) Wednesday NightsFor the next four months (November through February) at least, there will be something new for our church on Wednesday evenings! It’s called Wednesday Worship and it will be honest, simple, informal, intergenerational worship. It will follow the Wednesday dinner in Kissling, approximately 6:25-7:15 p.m. The dates are December 4 (with the Advent Festival), January 29 and February 26. Wednesday Worship is for everyone. It will be inviting to newcomers and meaningful for all ages. Don’t expect a rock band; but do expect an openness to the gifts of all. From making symbols for worship to composing prayers together, Wednesday Worship will be engaging and relevant. Each month the worship service will be designed around a theme. In November the theme is Gratitude. If you wish, you make take advantage of free childcare for children five and under. However, we strive to welcome the gifts of children as well as youth and adults in worship.

The normal classes and groups will not meet those four nights so we can all come together for a mid-week shot of encouragement and a

Members who are comfortable in the digital world may, when and wherever they choose: register and pay for events, view their financial statement, and if so desired set up online giving. In addition, members will be able to view the membership directory and church calendars through this church membership portal. For those members who do not feel comfortable or are unable to utilize this online service, this will in no way affect how you currently interact with Riverside.
