Patients should stop taking Aspirin 2 weeks prior to surgery. For patients who take NSAIDs (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, etc.): These medications can also have a slight blood thinning effect. Patients should stop all of these medications 3 days prior to surgery. If patient needs medication for pain, Tylenol, Extra-strength Tylenol, and Acetaminophen are all safe to use. For patients who take herbal medications: Herbal medications can interfere with other medications and cause problems with blood clotting and anesthesia administration. These herbal medications include St. John’s Wort, Gingko Biloba, Feverfew, and Ginseng, among others. Patients should stop all of these medications 2 weeks prior to surgery. Please consult with your doctor if you have any questions or are unsure of which medications to start/stop prior to your surgery.
