Learning Outcomes and/or Expected Student Competencies:

This course analyses the concepts of nation, nationalism and national identity and, in particular, their relationship to political power and democracy. It takes an interdisciplinary approach, examining explanatory and normative literature from sociology, social psychology, history and political science. Students are expected to apply these concepts and theories to actual cases from the country they’re living in. On completion of the course, students should be able to:

Learning Outcome 1. Be able to compare and contrast interpretations of the resurgence of

ethnicity and nationalism in the contemporary world 2. Evaluate the challenges this presents to a world of nation states 3. Debate the issue of the extent to which the nation state is a viable

and effective political unit in a world of global markets, inter-state organisations and political movements for ethnic resurgence.

Course Outline:

Session Topic Session 1 Introduction of the course. Presentation of the students

Studying abroad means to experience a new country. Americans are used to hear in a context of great pride people loudly declare, "I'm patriotic”, but in Spain being patriotic could have very different

meanings, according to a different idea of national identity. Actually Spain could be defined a multinational state. The Spanish Constitution of 1978 states the following intentionally ambiguous sentence that lies in the root of the matter:

"The Constitution is based on the indissoluble unity of the Spanish Nation, the common and indivisible homeland of all Spaniards; it recognizes and guarantees the right to self-government of the nationalities and regions of which it is composed and the solidarity among them all."

But what is nation? And moreover, should every nation have its own separate state? Should every state engulf one nation? Is the nation-state sovereign? Actually the resurgence of nationalism is one of the key concepts to really understand this country, and the context they are living in.
