She is a graduate of Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, Bloomington, with a B.S. degree in accounting and finance and an M.B.A. degree. Technology Impact on Insurers David A. Rains, Managing Director Emil Metropoulos, Senior VP Guy Carpenter & Co. LLC Technological progress is accelerating at a rapid pace and with it are the risks and opportunities that accompany those changes in many different segments of our economy. Exposures to cyber-attacks are increasing due to proliferation of technology, cloud computing, and electronic commerce. New chemicals are being used every day in new products - and these new products could lead to new diseases that are not yet quantifiable, creating unknown implications for any number of product lines. New mechanical products and processes, such as drones, 3-D printing, and self-driving automobiles are transforming the liability potential for reinsurers and insurers in many different industries. Medicinal advances, pharmaceutical breakthroughs, and continued focus on healthy life styles are prolonging our lives, increasing exposure for annuity or pension plan providers. The cost of medical services continues to increase, putting pressure on health reinsurers and insurers to price products correctly as well as adequately quantifying potential claims volatility over multiple years. The emergence of these increasingly complex global risks are challenging the way the reinsurance and insurance industry evaluates, analyzes, and manages these new exposures. This session will examine key areas where risks continue to emerge or, perhaps more importantly, contain elements where the risks are unknown at this time. David Rains is a Managing Director with Guy Carpenter & Company, LLC and leads the firm's Healthcare & Life Specialty Practice, which provides comprehensive risk mitigation, capital management, and business analytics consulting services to the life and health re/insurance industry. As an actuary and business leader, he combines an acute understanding of risk with a practical approach to dealing with real business issues.

David has almost 25 years of experience in insurance and reinsurance, the last eight with Guy Carpenter. His background includes both health and life insurance and reinsurance with a clear customer-centric approach - understanding stakeholder needs and designing specific solutions that create mutual value. His expertise includes product development, pricing, underwriting and sales leadership. His team’s clients include medical providers, medical insurers, employee benefits insurers, specialty benefits MGU’s and life and annuity insurers.

Prior to joining Guy Carpenter in 2007, David held several management positions for ING Reinsurance in Denver, CO and Transamerica Reinsurance in Charlotte, NC. He developed and led new lines of business for both companies and delivered custom risk solutions for some of the largest insurers in the United States.

He is active in the industry and frequently speaks and writes on current and emerging topics in risk and reinsurance.

David is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. He holds a BS degree in Computer Science from The University of Alabama.

TOBLEMAN, FSA, FCAS, MAAA, President & Managing Principal MICHAEL A. MAYBERRY, FSA, MAAA, Senior Vice President & Principal Lewis & Ellis, Actuaries & Consultants

Implementation of principle-based reserving (PBR) started January 1, 2017. PBR is designed to maintain strong solvency oversight by regulators while helping ensure that companies will fulfill obligations to policyholders. PBR will replace a formula-based approach that may require life insurers to begin analyzing systems, actuarial support, pricing, products, and human capital to ensure PBR is properly supported and its impact understood. During this session we’ll:

Provide an overview of PBR and highlight the differences from the current standards Discuss how companies are reacting to the change in valuation standards Give an early indication of the impacts to reserves and capital and potential impacts to the

insurance industry.
