AND ANOTHER THING!! - 2IT’S•GOT•NOTHING•TO•DO•WITH•FOOTBALL!! Just 2 things today:

OK,•Father’s•Day•came•&•went last June (and don’t•they•publicise•it•a•lot•more•these•days•than•yearsago??), but the card I had from one of my offspring did make me chuckle somewhat. It was entitled“THINGS•DADS•LIKE•TO•MOAN•ABOUT”•&•like•a round block of cheese, the circle was cut into trianglesrepresenting percentages, like so:

The Cost of Everything 2% (Very true!)Politicians 2% (Don’t•get•me•started…….)Tuneless modern music 2% (Ditto)The Weather 2% (It’s•what•we•do•best!)Confusing modern technology 2% (Well – sometimes!) Achesand pains 2% (Absolutely!)The ungrateful youth of today 2% (When I was a lad…….)Other drivers on the road 2% (Don’t•get•me•started•again!)ANYTHING & EVERYTHING ELSE 84% (YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!) INTHE WORLD!

And in that 84%, I would include all people of any age who like to end every sentence with the word“Cool” or who wear baseball caps back to front….. or both!

And secondly, I don't know if you're on the Telephone Preference System (to block unwanted calls),but we are, even though it doesn't block calls from abroad. Recently,• we’ve• had• some• calls• fromabroad, including one the other Friday where the caller demanded payment of £100 for making the callto us in the first place! Once the person was told where they could go, we then decided to reportthe•matter•to•the•local•police,•but•here’s•the•best•bit – the 2 nearest police stations in my neck of thewoods are actually CLOSED on Fridays!!! You could not make it up. Britain 2013 - what a joke!

AND SO THE TRANSFER WINDOW HAS CLOSED ONCE AGAIN! It’s•become•one•of•football’s soapoperas in its own right, with deals going on right to the final few minutes – you can see why themedia•loves•it•too,•as•it•gives•them•so•much•to•talk•about•&•it’s•“live”•too,•so•anything•can•happen•atany time with no warning. As usual, some of the big clubs were busy of late, some not so busy &everyone else has just picked up whatever freebies they could get. Chelsea signed one or two of late,Tottenham signed anything that moved or breathed air, though they did sell one player for a few quid& Arsenal shocked us all by spending FORTY TWO MILLION QUID in one go on Mesut Ozil!

SO OK, WHAT ABOUT THE GARETH BALE SAGA?? What a palava - that seemed to go on longerthan•“Dallas”•in•the•end,•but•come•on,•no•one•on•earth•is•worth•all•that•money just for kicking a ballabout. To pay all that money (akin•to•a•small•country’s•national•debt) for a footballer amid a worldrecession is just plain obscene, but football•doesn’t• follow•the•usual•business•rules•&•besides, thatrecord fee will be beaten again before long. Yes,•Bale’s•a•good•player,•he•had•a•great•season•lasttime out & a decent one•the•year•before•that,•but•now•he’s•suddenly•a•huge,•huge•megastar•on•theworld’s•stage?• Time•will•tell•on•that•one. For me, though, he blotted his copybook in late August bynot turning up for training at Tot tenham as all the speculation was at its height & the move wasseemingly•“imminent”. That just smacked of arrogance. Clearly,•his•agent’s•turned•his•head•in•thelast 6 months or so, and in fairness, Tot tenham dragged it all out big-time just to make a few morequid out of it all, but I think that until he signed on that dotted line for Real Madrid, then he was stilla Tottenham player & he should have acted like one until he moved on.

FINAL BATCH OF QUICKIES: West•Ham’s•Ravel•Morrison – what a wuss for wearing gloves atNewcastle in late August!• What’s•he•going•to•wear•in• January•when•it’s• REALLY•cold??...... Andthere’s•plenty•of•talk•at•present•about•the•lack•of•English•players in the Premier League, so whenyou get just THREE English players in the combined Man City v Newcastle squads on Day 1 of theseason, then you can see why FA chief Greg Dyke said what he said recently. He said he wants usto win the World Cup in 2022. And then he woke up! THE FIELD MARSHALL

FIELD REVIEW -24

FROM•THE•EDITOR’S•DESKWe realised that, following their superb 3-0home win against today’s• visitors, SwindonSupermarine in the Preliminary Round, wewould need a strong performance againstWINCHESTER CITY at The DenPlan Stadium.Well,• that’s• exactly• what it was and it provedto be against all the odds as we prevailedeven though we had to play the last half-hourwith only ten men!

We struggled in the first-half when Winchesterclearly looked the better side and their pacy attackkept our defence looking very square at times andonly poor finishing and the agility of KEVINSAWYER kept us level. They took the lead after 56minutes with our defence looking all at sea andwhen SHAUN LAMB was red-carded just after thehour, for two cautions, it looked all over for us.

And that was when, at last, we started to play. Infact, as the game drew to its close, I found it difficultto remember that we were a man short! DAVESTONE won the penalty that NEIL ARNDALEtucked away and then, in those dying momentsSTONE slotted home the winner, sending us allhome very happy. To be honest, The Citizens couldconsider themselves a little unfortunate, but youcannot take away the fact that we came back froma goal down to win, with ten men!

New signing LUKE BALLINGER started butMATT SYSUM was cup-tied, having played inthe competition for Evesham United. So, anotherwelcome £3,000 for the club and our‘reward’• is• a• trip• to• EASTLEIGH• FC,• whocurrently are top of the Skrill Conference South. If we had wanted a harder fixture, then it wouldnot have been possible. We will go there asmassive underdogs, but this is the FA Cup andanything can happen!

Looking back at our previous round againstBITTON AFC, it would be fair to say that wedid not play as well as we could. They werecertainly• ‘up• for• it’• and• made• it• as• difficult• aspossible, combined with a few tackles whichwent unpunished, but goals from JAMIE REID,JOSH EGAN & SHAUN LAMB saw usthrough• with• a• ‘professional’• performance.• Itwas surprising, therefore, to• see• ‘The• Ton’ gethammered 9-2 at Gillingham just a few dayslater!

FIELD REVIEW -1

Our recent result against an experiencedCIRENCESTER TOWN side did not exactlygo our way either and the Corinium Stadium1-2 defeat, was another example of not takingour chances. We failed to take severalopportunities which would have put us in astrong position, but we were always trailing.Had our first-half impetus matched our second,I feel sure that we would have takensomething• from• the• game.• JAMIE• REID’S 90th

minute goal was just a consolation.

It’s• not• often• that• we• have• friendly• gamesduring the season, but BRISTOL ROVERShave suffered with injuries since the startof the campaign and this was a goodopportunity• for• some• of• their• ‘walkingwounded’• to• gain• match-fitness. OLLIECLARKE, who came on loan to us a fewseasons ago, made an impression butunfortunately limped off just before the hour.

An entertaining encounter was won 3-1,expectedly,• by• Rovers,• but• ‘Field’• fans• cantake heart from a creative display and wecertainly made a game of it.

TAUNTON TOWN are here on Tuesday (24th),and our scheduled trip to EVESHAM now makesway for the Eastleigh encounter, on the 28th. Thepostponed clash with TIVERTON TOWN, atLadysmead now takes place on Tuesday 4th

October. Of course, it goes without saying, thatshould we perform beyond expectations inHampshire, then that will mean an FA Cup replayhere on that date.

We extend a warm welcome to everyone fromSWINDON SUPERMARINE FC. They will certainlyremember last season’s• visit•to us!! They havestarted the season well and will surely featurein the end of season play- offs. It is anotherbig test for us, but that is how this division is,and early form suggests that the race for thetop will be even more difficult in 2013/14.

Thanks everyone for your support…..especiallyto those who follow us on the road. The playersand management do appreciate it.

So,•remember•the•cry…and wave those flags.

AND ANOTHER THING!! -1FIRST BATCH OF QUICKIES: OK,•let’s•give•credit•where•it•is•due,•so•well•done Arsenal for atotally unexpected 3-0 demolition of Fenerbahce in Turkey last month & then 2-0 in the return, with a3-1 win at Fulham lumped in between. Crisis at Arsenal? What crisis? OK, Arsenal have been aneasy target for criticism of late (and see below for more of the same) because so many of their fanswant massive changes at their club, but to go to Turkey – where teams regularly get greeted with allthat•“Welcome•to•Hell”•c**p•by•the•locals – and then stuff the home side on their own tump was a realturn-up for the book. It may not change things all that much long-term, but it was still a result thatfew saw coming…… So we all know that the bigger•clubs•“rest•players”•or,•as•they•put•it“rotate•their•squad” when it comes to Carling Cup matches – like Crystal Palace did at Bristol City(11 changes & they ended up getting beaten – hah!),•but•maybe•the•bigger•clubs’•FANS•take•it•moreseriously? Newcastle made 8 changes for their tie at Morecambe, but nearly 2,000 Geordies stillmade the trip to•the•other•coast•&•that’s•pretty•good. I•can•only•imagine•how•many•of•their•“larger”supporters went shirtless all day in Lancashire (like some of them do all winter!), but did they all gojust•so•they•could•have•their•picture•taken•with•Eric•Morecambe’s•statue??.......Meanwhile, fair playto Stoke City, who have promised FREE travel to all registered supporters this season who travelwith the club to all away games. Nice if you can do that…… And what a hypocrite, seeing the PFAboss Gordon Taylor plastered all across the front page of The Currant Bun recently,•“allegedly”•6 figuresin debt over HIS OWN gambling debts, when part of his job is supposed to warn players about thedangers of gambling! You could not make it up. At•that•rate,•perhaps•he’ll•be•in•need•of•apay-day loan soon – only 4,000% interest at the last count with that lot beginning with W,•isn’t•it?

NOW HERE’S•ANOTHER CONTENDER FOR•TODAY’S•“YOU•COULD•NOT•MAKE•IT•UP”•AWARD,although it was mentioned briefly in the programme v Clevedon. There’s• 5• minutes• left• in• theGuildford• game• &• we’re• 4-2 up. One of our older supporters decides to leave early, so I ask himwhy he’s•going. To beat the traffic? No. Is it because the game is almost over? No. He’s•leaving•earlybecause (quote)…..”I’M• GOING•HOME•EARLY•TO•WA TCH• THE•FOOTBALL”. (It was Swanseav Man Utd on TV). So you leave one football match to go home….. just so you can watch anotherfootball match. Dear oh dear – and our friend missed those last 2 late goals here as well!!

SECOND BATCH OF QUICKIES: Now you have to smile at Arsene Wenger, he may not saythese things in the way they come out, but he does say some little gems here & there. What wasthat one recently?• “I will only bring special players to Arsenal. To add someone, they have to bespecial”. Yeah, right. Most Arsenal fans wished at the time that he would sign ANY player, becauseall they ever do at the Emirates is sell their best player & they NEVER replace them – until MesutOzil……and• talking• (again)• of• Arsenal,• their• gate• figures• seem• more• inflated• than• ever. Itappears they base their attendances on the number of tickets sold each match, so for their gate vFenerbahce, the gate was said to be 59,000. Rubbish! What about the HUNDREDS & HUNDREDSof empty seats visible on TV during that game?? Knock a few thousand off that figure, Arsenal, forthe PROPER gate figure!......And it was all the Fenerbahce fans making all the noise too, includingall the shirt-less•ones,•but•that’s•no•surprise•because•Arsenal’s•home•supporters•these days are allcorporate types & they never cheer in case they choke on their prawn sandwich…….

MARK COOPER AND TERRY COOPER!• Funny•how•coincidences•happen•now•&•again,•isn’t•it? Lastmonth, Mark Cooper was appointed Swindon Town manager. This had me wondering that I wassure•he’d•played•against•us•at•some•point•&•I•was•right – it was way back on 15 March 1989 & wewent down 4-1 at home to a Bristol City XI in a friendly. Cooper•bagged•City’s•3rd goal on the night.Dave Griffiths got ours, btw. Then•on•30•August,•I•watched•one•of•those•old•“Big•Match•Revisited”shows on ITV4 & that featured the highlights of Everton v Bristol City from 1979 in the old First Division.Mark•Cooper’s• dad•Terry•played•for•City•on• that•occasion,•but•although•Clive•Whitehead had givenCity the lead at Goodison, an Andy King hat-trick & a screamer from Billy Wright gave the Toffees thepoints. For the record, the City line-up that day was: Shaw, Sweeney, Cooper, Gow,Rodgers, Hunter, Tainton, Cormack, Ritchie, Royle, Whitehead. Sub: Gillies.

But how times have changed! The commentator said at the end that the defeat “would•have•seriousimplications•for•City’s•chances•of European qualification”. Those really were the days, eh? (Cont.)

MUFC - SECONDARY SPONSORS AN ALTERNATIVE HISTORY OF BRISTOL SPORTA SIDEWAYS SLANT BYJONTY MORGAN

THE BRISTOL MILKMAN WHO DELIVERED FOR ENGLAND

The greatest footballer who was born in Bristol was undoubtedly EDDIE HAPGOOD. He was born in1909 in The Dings and from an early age he was kicking a ball along with other soccer mad youthin the area. Indeed, as a youth, he was once warned by a magistrate after breaking a window, thatplaying football would only get him into further trouble. The magistrate then picked up his wig – whichwas being used as one of the goalposts – and scarpered, leaving Eddie and his mates to carry thecan.

Hapgood was playing for St. Phillips Adult School Juniors when he came to thenotice of Bristol Rovers coaching staff. They invited Eddie toplay in a trial matchagainst Taunton Unitedat Eastville in May1927, where he wasgiven theresponsibilityof marking formerBristol City star,Treasure. The full-backwas working as amilkman at the time, butso impressed were theRovers’ managementand Directors, with hisperformance that day, that they offered him afull-time contract at £8 per week in the season and a job driving a coal wagon in the Summer.Hapgood declined the offer believing that driving a milk-cart had more dignity. It also transpired thathe’d•found•a•letter•in•one•of•the•empty•bottles•on•his•round•from•a•mystic,•warning•him•under•pain•ofdeath, not to go to the Rovers, but stick to his milk round instead. However, when the mystic wasquestioned about it years later, she was very upset; because she hadn’t meant it to be read by Eddie, but by his bosses at Dunford Dairies instead.

He soon signed for Kettering as a part-timer and after a handful of impressive displays, he wasswiftly signed by the legendary Herbert Chapman for Arsenal for £750. Initially, Hapgood and histeam- mates deliberately played below par. This was because Arsenal were the team of the 1930sand it was•still•only•1927!!•That’s•what•Gentlemen•they•were•back•in•those•days.

Arsenal went on to win five league titles between 1930 and 1938 and also win the FA Cup on twooccasions during this period. Hapgood was the Captain of this brilliant team and was also a mainstayof the England defence. There were many memorable moments in his International career and onecontroversial game in particular. Hapgood played a central role in Berlin in 1938 when the Englandplayers were ordered by the F.A. to give the Nazi salute.

On behalf of the team, Hapgood complained, citing these reasons why they considered it inadvisable.1. There would be more chance of giving away penalties due to handball.2. It would be difficult to tell when they were appealing for offside.3. It was in the days before under-arm deodorants were widely available.

The England players compromised with The F.A. and only gave the salute during the GermanNational Anthem. They then went on to stuff their hosts 6-3! When the War came the following year,Hapgood joined the RAF and played in many wartime Internationals. He was, without doubt,•Bristol’sgreatest football ambassador.

DOWN MEMORY LANESaturday 4th November 2006 and Mangotsfield United travelled to AFC HORNCHURCH for a 2nd

Qualifying Round tie in the FA Carlsberg Trophy. They had already won impressively in the 1QR atStourport Swifts, by 5-1, and LEWIS POWELL, on loan from Bristol Rovers, had celebrated hisMangotsfield debut at Walshes Meadow with a goal.

It was clear that the lad showed obvious potential and the tie at AFC Hornchcurch posed a difficulttest for• ‘The• Field’,• who• had• placed• their• trust• in• a• new• on-loan goalkeeping signing of WILLPUDDY. The•‘Urchins’•had•won•the•Essex•Senior•League•the•previous•season•and•this•was•their•firstcampaign at Isthmian Division One North level. The fact that they were to finish the season aschampions with a lead of 21 points, having lost only three league games, and winning 32, highlightsthe achievement that of that afternoon.

A• Bridge• Avenue• ‘gate’• of• 484• saw• ROBBIE• CLARIDGE• give• us• a• 33rd minute lead and thenPOWELL blasted home a second – a 25 yard rocket in the 48th minute. As you can see from thephoto above, LEWIS is swamped by his team-mates, JON FRENCH, OLLIE PRICE, CLARIDGE &CHRIS LANE (photo taken by GARRY BOWDEN of sport in pictures).

CLARIDGE put the tie beyond doubt, making it 0-3 just before the hour and Mark Janney baggeda consolation goal with an 81st minute•penalty.•‘The•Field’•went•on•in•the•competition•to•beat•BillericayTown 2-1 at The New Lodge, Bluntswall Road,, and then Kings Lynn at Cossham Street, beforecrashing out 0-5 at Morecambe.

For LEWIS POWELL, he grabbed the only goal in the following league game at home to HalesowenTown and scored his fourth for the club, in a League cup-tie 3-2 victory at Wordsworth Drive, TauntonTown, all this in just 9(2) appearances.

His return to Cossham Street could•be•just•the•‘shot•in•the•arm’•that•the•side•needs•to•make•a challengethis season.

FIELD REVIEW - 20

“SPOTLIGHT”This•is•Supermarine’s•13th season at Southern League level and after five campaigns in the Premier Division, finishing 12th, 13th, 14th, 10th and 21st, they were relegated in 2011/12. They struggled in their first four seasons& finished 19th, 19th, 17th & 19th, but in 2005/06, they finished 5th and reached the play-offs. Unfortunately, theybowed out to Hemel Hempstead. Undaunted, they finished 4th in 2006/07 & defeated Taunton Town in theplay-off final, achieving promotion. Manager Mark Collier & Tom Jones resigned in February2011 and for the 2011/12 season, Gary Horgan & Matt Robinson were in charge. The club

decided at the start of the last campaign, on a management change and as aresult, DAVE WEBB & his Assistant LEE SPALDING are at the helm. In theirfirst campaign (2012/13), they almost made a quick return to the PremierDivision, finishing 4th, but they lost on penalties to Merthyr Town, in the Play-offs.

The club were founded in 1992 with the amalgamation of two established Hellenic Leagueclubs – Swindon Athletic and Supermarine. At the time of the merger, fortunes for both clubswere not good, with Supermarine finishing bottom of Division One and Swindon Athletic werehaving problems improving their facilities at Southbrook to comply with new league rules. Themerger was the best way forward. Swindon Athletic, formerly known as Penhill, up to 1989,were formedin•1968•and•were•previously•members•of•the•Wiltshire•County•League.•The•decade•of•the•80’swhen they joined the Hellenic League, saw unparalleled success. They won the WiltshireSenior Cup three times and won promotion to the Wiltshire Senior Division One, winning thetitle in successive seasons and in 1985, they joined the Hellenic League, being promoted atthe first attempt.

The Supermarine aircraft company became famous in the Second World War for its design ofthe Spitfire, for which we have all been eternally grateful. The Football club grew out of theWorks Social club in 1946, under the name of Vickers Armstrong, and then, simply, Vickers. The club also joined•the•Hellenic•League•in•the•early•1980’s•after•progressing•through•the•Swindon•&District and Wiltshire Leagues. They too found success during the eighties, winning the WiltshireSenior Cup.

Since the merger, Swindon Supermarine had always finished in the leading position in theHellenic League and in 1997/98, they were crowned Premier Divisions Champions and in2000/01, they won the title again and their application for Dr.Martens League football, wasaccepted. There were a number of ground improvements needed to be carried out to meetthe League’s•guidelines.•A•225•seater•stand•was•built•to•complement•the•old•stand,•taking•thecovered accommodation to over 300 seats and a 6ft perimeter fence was built and newfloodlights were erected.

As mentioned, it’s•been•an•arduous•time,•keeping•the•club•at•Southern•League•level•and•therehave been many managerial casualties along the way. Alan Dyton stood down due to businesscommitments, but wanted to stay in the club in some capacity, so he assisted Clive Maguire.

The club later turned to the vastly experienced John Murphy, who had been successful at SouthernLeague

level and he was then followed by Academy Director, Tom Jones, but he left after a rather disastrous short spelland former Cirencester Manager Ray Baverstock came in with Assistants Pat Slattery and John Freeth.

Personal commitments forced Ray Baverstock to leave although the club did their best to help in thisrespect, but they next turned to former Chippenham Town boss Tommy Saunders, ending his footballexile. Unfortunately, the outspoken Saunders resigned after only a couple of months in the job. Mark stayed for a long spell, whilst the club stayed in the Premier Division.

During the close season, Supermarine lost one or two players to newly-promoted and close rivals HungerfordTown, so manager WEBB had to re-build slightly but the club appear, based on early results, probably to bejust as strong, despite their surprise FA Cup defeat at Wessex League Winchester City.

INTRODUCING•‘MARINE’ROB DEAN – MIDFIELDAn energetic midfielder who signed for the club in July 2011, previously with Highworth Town. Also had aspell with Cirencester Town, and adapted to the higher level of the Southern League Premier very quickly.Won all the plaudits in 2011/12 but an early injury last season, meant he never quite reached his previousconsistency. Looking to put that straight this season.

INTRODUCING•‘MARINE’JOSH MORSE – FORWARDLeft-winger Josh joined Marine from Cirencester Town in July 2013 where he had come through theirAcademy. He is the son of former Marine midfielder Stuart Morse, who was a member of the 1997/98Hellenic Premier Championship side, and is an exciting player to watch. He is excellent on the ball withplenty of pace and trickery enough to go beyond his marker and whip a cross into the box. Josh was aformer PE Science student at Cirencester College and made an International debut for the EnglandColleges Football Association in Italy in May 2012, and was given the honour of being captain.

ANOTHER BRITISH SPORTING SUCCESS…ALMOST!Graham Mills is based in St. Neots, Cambs. He produces the Eynesbury Rovers programme and pensarticles for Bristol Rovers. He has very kindly passed on some very readable articles for the FIELDREVIEW.

Welcome everyone•to•today’s•game.•This•year•has•been•a•remarkable•one•for•sporting•success achievedby Brits; The Tour De France, Wimbledon and The Ashes to name a few. I held back from writing thisarticle for fear of tempting fate! However, tonight could see the name of Tai Woffinden added to thatlist as he is on the verge of becoming the first British Speedway World Champion since MarkLoram’s•success•in•the•year•2000.

At 6pm this evening the penultimate round of the GP Series takes place at the Friends Allianz Arena inStockholm, Sweden and with Woffinden twenty points clear of his nearest rival you could be witnessinganother British sporting success live on Eurosport 2.

Last year Aussie Chris Holder became the youngest ever World Champion when he lifted the trophy atthe•age•of•24•but•Woffinden•can•erase•that•record•as•he•has•just•turned•23.•Tai’ s•nearest•rival,•RussianEmil Sayfutdinov, was forced to sit out the last Grand Prix after injuring his arm and knee whilst racing inPoland. Woffinden made the most of his opportunity picking up 17 points to extend his lead at the top to20 points. It was recently announced that Emil will not be able to race in the Swedish Grand Prix thisevening thus putting Tai firmly in the driving seat (if you pardon the pun!). His nearest title rival is PoleJaroslaw Hampel who trails by 22 points. At each Grand Prix there are 21 points up for grabs so if Taiequals•or•betters•Hampels’•points•total•he•will•be•crowned•World•Champion•in•Stockholm•tonight•with thefinal meeting in Poland still to come.

Injuries play a big part in this fast and exciting sport and each time a rider takes to the track he runs therisk of a fall. The reigning World Champion, Chris Holder, raced in seven GP meetings before a seriouscrash at Coventry ruled the Aussie out of racing for the rest of the year. Tai Woffinden has also hadinjury•problems•after•he•took•a•tumble•in•the•British•GP•at•Cardiff’s•Millennium•Stadium.•He•raced•in•thenext GP with a broken collar bone and was in obvious pain throughout the meeting, but he secured twelvevaluable points. Two times World Champion Nicki Pedersen had been keeping in contention by riding witha broken arm!

Tai is the current British Champion and he races for Wolverhampton Wolves in the British Elite League andI saw him in action at a recent meeting at Peterborough. I was expecting him to win his five races with easebut he recorded one victory and four second places in his five rides. The Speedway Grand Prix Series takes place over the course of the speedway season starting in NewZealand in March and ending in Torun, Poland on Saturday 5th October. There are fifteen regular ridersthat•compete•throughout•the•year•and•a•‘wild•card’•at•each•meeting,•usually•a•rider•from•the•host•country(to boost ticket sales!). There are 20 races (or heats) and riders pick up three points for a win, two for asecond place, one for third place and no points for finishing last.

After those 20 heats the eight riders with the highest points total go through to the semi-finals with the twowinners and runners up in each semi going on to meet in the final. Whilst the winner gets the glory of winningthat Grand Prix it is all about the points that are accumulated over the season. Tai Woffinden has won justone GP (Czech Republic) whilst his nearest rivals, Sayfutdinov and Hampel have won three each but it isthe Brit that is on the verge of being crowned champion due to his consistent point scoring over the tenGrand Prix meetings held so far.

Apart from the World Championship to ride for there are silver and bronze medals up for grabs. Withjust sixteen points separating second placed Sayfutdinov from sixth placed Greg Hancock you can besure that the battle for the medals will go to the wire. Further down the field there is also the race tofinish•in•the•top•eight•to•ensure•automatic•inclusion•for•next•years’•Grand•Prix•Series.•With•so•much•atstake the racing is fast, hard and very competitive. At this level anyone can win a race as the riders arethe best in the world. If you haven’t•watched•speedway•I•recommend•tuning•in•to•Eurosport•2•this eveningas you could be witnessing another British Champion. So if someone slopes off early this evening youknow why (ahem!).

SUCCESS often breeds success, especially in Non-League football. Promoted sides always do wellwhen making the step up, or so people think, but is it fact or fiction?

Well, if you look at the stats, the old saying is pretty accurate. With the benchmark ten games almostplayed in most leagues, certain sides have set out their stall for another promotion charge. In the Skrill North, newly-promoted Hednesford Town have started well and led the way early on withfellow promoted side North Ferriby United also flying high.

One that catches the eye further down in the Ryman North is VCD Athletic who were top of the leaguecoming into the weekend after finishing runners-up in the Kent League last season. When speaking to a manager who has just won promotion, you•can•bet•your•bottom•dollar•that•he’ll mentionmomentum and a winning attitude as being key to the following season.

Promoted sides are often tipped to do well with a feel-good factor spurring them on but how much impactdoes it actually make?Well, looking back at the past three seasons from Steps 1-3, the average position of a promoted sideis…•10th.It just goes to show how close divisions are in Non-League in terms of quality, with the biggest step, andlowest average finish for a promoted side at 13th, being the Skrill Premier.

With most promoted sides operating part-time and entering a mainly professional division, it can betough but there is positive news for Chester, Welling, Halifax and Salisbury fans – no promoted sidehas gone straight back down over the past three seasons.

In fact, over the past three years, six sides have been promoted again from Steps 1-3 while only fivehave gone straight back down – a whopping 15 reaching the play-offs.The Skrill North is the friendliest division for promoted teams with an average finish of sixth. The lowestfinish•over•the•past•three•terms?•Colwyn•Bay’s•12th•place•finish•in•2011-12.

The•Skrill•South•isn’t•quite•as•welcoming•though,•with•both•AFC•Hornchurch•and•Billericay•falling straightback down last season. Despite that, it still has an average finish of 12th.Of the three Step 3 divisions, the Evo-Stik NPL has seen the most success, helped by phoenix clubsChester and FC Halifax.

And•if•your•team•hasn’t•started•well,•don’t•panic!•As•seen•in•the•Skrill•Premier•last•season,•it’s•a•long•oldmarathon and not a sprint.Champions Mansfield and runners up Kidderminster Harriers failed to impress early on but both recoveredto fight it out for the title on the last day of the season.

In•Kiddy’s•case, they had yet to win after ten games – drawing five and losing five – but the club stuckwith boss Steve Burr and were almost rewarded with a return to the Football League. Patience is indeeda virtue.

So,• if• you’re• lucky• enough• to• be• a• fan• of• a• promoted side,• there’s• a• very• good• chance• you’ll• enjoyanother fruitful season – have fun!

WHAT THE PAPERS SAYMore quotes now from the close season. Waste not, want not!

“JOSE•MOURINHO•WILL•NEVER•WIN•A•PRIZE•(A•TROPHY)•AGAIN. I THINK THIS WAY BECAUSEOF HOW HE ACTED AT REAL MADRID. HE BLAMED EVERYONE ELSE WHEN SOMETHINGWENT WRONG AND HE HAS PLAYED AN UNBELIEVABLY NEGATIVE PART IN HIS MADRIDYEARS. THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOUR DOES NOT WORK IN FOOTBALL. IT ONLYWORKS•IN•PARALYSING•THE•DRESSING•ROOM”. The words of former Ajax, Barcelona & Hollandlegend Johan Cruyff, as quoted in The Sun on 4 June• 2013,• as• he• lambasted• Jose• Mourinho’sSpecial One return to Chelsea.

Well,•it’s•all•about•opinions,•of•course. Cruyff•was•one•of•the•world’s•greatest•players•(so he shouldknow•what•he’s•talking•about) & he put Ajax, Holland & Total Football on the map in the 1970s morethan anyone else. But•in•all•honesty,•I•really•can’t•imagine•Mourinho•returning•to•Chelsea•&•winningNOTHING. I’m•sure•he•WILL•win•trophies•there•(and as club captain, even If he is not playing, JohnTerry will continue to gate-crash all the celebratory team pictures as each cup is lifted)……but onlyas long as Abramovich is happy with Jose being there – and with a bloke like that who changesmanagers more often than he does his underwear, you can never really be sure of anything!

“I’M NOT INTERESTED IN STUFF LIKE THAT. OTHER PEOPLE CAN TWEET ALL THEY LIKEFROM•THEIR•SOFAS,•BUT•WE’RE•OUT•THERE•ON•THE•PITCH•DOING•IT. IT IS HARD WORK ANDWE ALL ENJOY IT. NO ONE IN THE SQUAD IS INTERESTED (IN NEGATIVE COMMENTS) ANDTHEY CAN JUST TWEET ALL•THEY•WANT”. The words of annoyed England keeper Joe Hart, asquoted in The Sun on 4 June 2013, as he re-acted to tweets from other big names – Michael Owenin particular – who•were•critical•of•England’s•performance•in•the•2-2 draw in Rio in June.

Rio!• Now•there’s•a•bloke•who•tweets•a•lot•&•it’s•not•always•positive! But•as•for•Hart’s•comments, well, hehad a point, but at the same time, he needed to step back, sit down & watch a re-run of the game fromhis own sofa AS A FAN once he got back home from Brazil. He would then have seen himself keepingan ordinary** Brazil side at bay in the first half with 5 or 6 super saves while his 10 team-mates had theirthoughts on the beach for the first 45 minutes. And then, in the 2nd half, he would have seen his team-mates,aided by one or two choice substitutions, suddenly pull their socks up after finally going 1-0 down, comeback & take the lead with 2 great goals, only to concede another goal near the end, but deservedly earna 2-2 draw, if only for that second 45 minute display.

Now there may be another 3 or 4 months of 2013 still to go, but the Brazil game in June did give us (well,me anyway) one surreal moment in time. Perhaps the most surreal moment of the whole year! It wouldhave been during the few minutes after Rooney had put us 2-1 up with a wonder strike, with maybe 10minutes to go, amid the realisation that we MIGHT even win the game, but whilst we were (briefly) ahead, you could hear every single England fan on the globe thinking to himself or herself:

“HOW•IN•THE•NAME•OF•SANITY•ARE•WE•ACTUALLY•WINNING•THIS•GAME???????”

It• didn’t• last,• of• course,• &• Brazil• equalised• shortly• afterwards. Even• so,• it• was• a• moral• “victory”• ofsorts,•but•it•will•all•be•forgotten•about•if•we•can’t•qualify•this•autumn for Brazil 2014!

(**•Now•I•said•that•this•was•an•“ordinary”•Brazil•side – by their standards, that is. Brazil 2013 is nota patch on some previous Brazil teams & despite Conferations Cup success in June, they wouldn’teven be fit to tie up the bootlaces of Brazil 1970, (Pele, Jairzinho, Carlos Alberto & Co) who were –probably – the best national side ever seen on the planet. Having said that, the current Brazil teamstill do all the little tricks with the ball, the back-flicks, the clever knock-ons &•all•the•rest•of•it•&•it’s•ballskills•we•can•only•dream•about,•because•that’s•how•they•learn•the•game•over•there•&•we just don’t•dothings like that. Never have done. We•can’t•even•keep•the•ball•half•the•time•& we tend to give it awaytoo cheaply anyway. We are STREETS AWAY from ever possessing Brazil-like skills & with ourshambles of an Under-21 team,•there’s•not•much•hope•for•the•future. And yet this current Brazil teamwere NINETEENTH in the world rankings, whilst we were SIXTH! Just•doesn’t•make sense, does it?)

THAT WAS THE MONTH THAT WAS!Time now for a nostalgic look back at a particular month in recent or not-so-recent years & see how wefared in that period. Today we look at DECEMBER 1996.

THE 1996-1997 SEASON OVERALL

This was the season that it was all meant to happen, but it never quite did. The previous campaign,1995-1996, put us on the map, thanks to manager TERRY ROWLES & some astute signings. Wereached the FA Vase Semi-Finals, only to lose 2-1 to Clitheroe over 2 legs & we finished 3rd in theGreat Mills League behind the Big Two of Taunton Town & Tiverton Town. Backed by another largeplaying budget, Tel again assembled a strong-looking squad in 1996-97, but a challenge for the GMLtitle never materialized, as the Big Two disappeared over the horizon long before Christmas. Therewas to be no real Vase run either & although we finished 3rd in•the•GML•again,•our•“big•money”•dayswere soon to be over. We•did•win•the•GFA•Trophy•though,•so•the•season•wasn’t•a•complete failure!

THE GAMES IN QUESTION

December 1996 proved to be a quiet month with only 4 games scheduled & one of them, the BoxingDay trip to BRISTOL MANOR FARM fell victim to the poor weather over that Christmas period. The month began, however, with a tricky looking trip to WOTTON ROVERS in the GFA Trophy.Wotton were 2 levels below us at the time in the Glos County League & their programme on theday suggested•that•we’d•never•played•them•before,•or•if•we•had,•it•hadn’t•been•in•the•previous•25•years!

For the record, our line-up at Wotton was: IAN JONES, WAYNE MORRIS, STUART MINALL, JEREMYCHRISTOPHER, DEAN RADFORD, GREG TAYLOR, PAUL CICHY, NICK FROST, CARL SAUNDERS,ANDY PERRETT & SIMON WINSTONE. Sub who played: MATT RAWLINS.

We were hot favourites•to•win•at•Wotton,•but•it•wasn’t•an•easy•win•&•their•sloping•pitch•favoured•themmore than it did us. ANDY PERRETT put us ahead on 14 minutes, but an equaliser right on half timefrom Chris Skuse was a timely goal to cause us anxiety. However, sub MATT RAWLINS puts us aheadon the hour & an own goal 12 minutes from time gave the score-line a better look to it.

The Wotton programme was a good effort & I did like this part of the editorial: “Last• week,• they(MUFC) enjoyed a 2-0 win v Clyst Rovers in the Les Phillips Cup with goals from Gary Hewlett &Andy•Perrett,•and•what’s•more,•scientists•have•discovered•a•frozen•lake•on•the•moon•this•week•at•thebottom of an 8-mile•deep•crater!” Hhmm,•what•did•he•mean,•“What’s more”??It sounded as if therewas meant to be some sort of link between MUFC & the moon!

One week later, we edged home 2-1 in the FA Vase v CHIPPENHAM TOWN, whose side includedex-Mangos in Robbie Lardner, Paul Rose, Barry Flippance & John Freegard. We were expected to beatthe struggling Bluebirds fairly comfortably, but it was never like that at all. It took us until the 63rd minuteto forge ahead through ANDY PERRETT, but the lead lasted just 2 minutes before Nathan Sheridanfired home the equaliser. The game was heading for a replay, but thankfully, ex-BristolRovers striker CARL SAUNDERS scored our winner from close range with just 2 minutes to go. Onceagain, as was often the norm in the mid-90s, the gate of just 160 was very disappointing, but then again, the lure of Christmas shopping may have had something to do with it.

Final action of the month, then, proved to be a 1-1 draw at BIDEFORD, just 4 days before Christmas, with STUART MINALL getting our goal. Meanwhile,•there’ll•be•more•from•“TWTMTW”•again•soon.

DAVE’S•DIARY - 1GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE & WELCOME TO THE GLASS CONSULT ANTS UK STADIUM fortoday’s•Calor•League•clash against our old friends from SWINDON SUPERMARINE. Thank you foryour attendance today & for buying this programme. Well, last Saturday’s dramatic 2-1 FA Cup winat Winchester has given us an away trip to Eastleigh in the 2nd Qualifying Round next Saturday &the•Club•is•buzzing•with•excitement•of•course,•because•that’s•what•the•FA•Cup•does•for•you!• Rightnow, though, we face Swindon Super in a tough league fixture. They•are•one•of•the•division’s•bettersides these days, so it promises to be a great game this afternoon & a good test for us. Please giveOur Boyz all•your•support•&•let’s•see•if•we•can pick up 3 vital points – COME ON THE FIELD!!

NOW• IT’S• NO• SECRET• THAT• OUR• FIRST 3 HOME GATES THIS SEASON have been verydisappointing – 118 v GUILDFORD on the opening day & then 138 v CLEVEDON & 142 v BITTON.OK, you could say that many folk are•on•holiday•in•August•&•that’s•always•true, that’s•never•going•tochange. Looking back, we had no idea at all what sort of numbers Guildford would bring for starters, being a new club to this league & although they did talk on their forum that they might bring a fairfew “Down•West”, that never happened & in the end, they only brought a handful of fans with them.

THE CLEVEDON GATE WAS EVEN MORE DISAPPOINTING, & yes, I appreciate that it was a warmAugust Bank Holiday Monday (for once!) & people do other things on such a day. Clevedon didn’t•bringthat many with them at all & the first I (for one) heard out of any of them was when they actuallyscored mid-way through the 2nd half, and even then, they were all sat in the Ralph MillerStand!• Gone• are• the• days• when• they’d• bring• a• drum• or• two• & had a• fair• sprinkling• of• fans• who’dstand behind the goal. Not these days, though & the Seasiders have struggled with gates these pastfew years just like many other clubs have, including MUFC. Poor home gates tend to suggest pooraway support as well. The recession continues to bite & we fans all become more selective on howto part with our cash on a Saturday afternoon or for a midweek evening game.

THE BITTON GATE WAS PROBABLY THE MOST DISAPPOINTING ONE OF THE LOT, given theproximity of the 2 clubs, plus the fact that it was an FA Cup tie as well which added a bit of spice to theoccasion. I know that a number of our fans do watch Bitton at home when our First XI are away, butmaybe a game of that stature (in terms of local bragging rights) was perhaps just too early in the season.I seem to recall a few seasons ago, we were away to Yate Town in our first away game of the season (inmid-August) and the gate was well down on that occasion than it would have been had we played themat Christmas and Easter, as we usually do. That was bad planning on the part of the fixture-planners &luckily, the matter was rectified the following season.

BUT THEN AGAIN, LOOK AT THIS SEASON. We are at home to the Bluebells on Saturday 7December (so, a pre-Christmas Saturday, which is not ideal) and then we travel to Lodge Road onSaturday•5•April•next•year,•which•is•not•too•bad,•being•a•Saturday,•but•it’s•not•the•Easter•weekendeither,•as•that’s•another•2•weeks•later. Ultimately, both gates v Yate this season may turn out to beless than expected – unless both sides are doing well, of course!

MIND YOU, IT’S BEEN JUST THE SAME IN THE CONFERENCE AS WELL, on a greater scale

perhaps, but maybe I should say the Skrill Premier to give it its latest title. It took me ages to getused•to•“Blue•Square•Premier”•&•now•they’ve•changed•it•again,•but•it’s•still•“The•Conference”•to•mostof•us,•I’d•say!• Anyway,•take•LUTON•TOWN•as•an•example. They are the best supported side in theConference & home gates are usually 6,000+, with at least 600 Hatters fans regularly travelling on theiraway trips (and they took over 800 to Kidderminster), which is phenomenal at their level, but awaysupport figures from visiting teams to Kenilworth Road can vary greatly.

IN AUGUST , SALISBURY CITY TOOK JUST 92 FANS to Kenilworth Road, while 4 days later,Macclesfield Town arrived with just 80 supporters. Fans•will•pick•&•choose,•won’t•they?• Mind•you, there was no such problem when Cambridge United visited Luton on August Bank Holiday Monday– they took an amazing 963 fans & boosted the gate to 7,500! Well, it is a fairly local derby afterall, but•that’s•clearly•a•one-off for Luton. When they are at home to the likes of Forest Green Rovers,Alfreton Town or Hyde, then the away terraces at Luton could be fairly empty indeed! (Continued)

DAVE’S•DIARY - 2THE RECENT 2-1 DEFEAT AWAY TO CIRENCESTER TOWN proved to be a very disappointingone in the end, even though we had chances up at the Corinium Stadium to have got somethingfrom the game. It’s•just•one•of•those•grounds•that•we•rarely•seem to pick anything up at in recentyears! Nevertheless, the game saw the debut of new central defender MATT SYSUM who has arrivedat MUFC from Evesham United. We also captured the signing of former player LUKE BALLINGERlast week from Frome Town & he debuted in the dramatic FA Cup win at Winchester. It’s•good•to•seeLUKE• back• at• the• Club• &• it’s• good• to• see• MATT• also, so WELCOME TO COSSHAM STREET,MATT AND LUKE!

THE RECENT FRIENDLY MATCH AGAINST A BRISTOL ROVERS XI proved to be a very usefulexercise for Our Boyz. I think most players would probably say that they would rather play than trainin midweek, and so a test against professional players is always a useful exercise. It also gave usa chance to get the Cirencester defeat out of our system, so it was a timely exercise for us, as wellas for Rovers boss John Ward, who was going to use the game to give some of his walking woundeda run-out. We lost 3-1•in•the•end,•but•gave•a•good•account•of•ourselves•&•I’m•sure•those•who•attendedsaw a far more entertaining match than what we all saw on TV from Ukraine the night before! Sowell done to all those who came & saw the Gas at The Glass!

TALKING OF ATTENDANCES, AS I DID EARLIER, did you notice the gate for the Bitton v HenburyGFA Trophy match on the same night as the Ukraine game? 18 – yes, just eighteen, unless it reallyis a typing error on the Tools tation League website, though I doubt it somehow. There were otherToolstation League matches that night, but their gates were what I would call normal – between 60& 100. Perhaps County Cup fixtures are still considered low key by many people which is hard todisagree with, but like I have said in this column before, if you can get past the first couple of rounds, then you may as well try & win whichever trophy it is. Better•it’s•in•your•cabinet•than•someone•else’s!

SPEAKING OF THE TOOLSTATION LEAGUE, you may or may not have noticed that one of ourformer managers, DARREN PERRIN, is now back in a hot seat again – the one at Melksham Town,to be precise, a club he played for back in the early 90s & who he also managed in 1996-97 whenhe guided the Wiltshire side to promotion. Darren managed MUFC for less than a season around2006- 07 during one of our Southern League Premier Division seasons & more•recently,•he’d•been•withFrome•Town,•so•it’s•good•to•see•him•back•in•the•groove•again &•let’s•wish•him•all•the best as heattempts to get Melksham up the league table following a poor start to the season.

MEANWHILE, COMING UP IN THE NEXT WEEK here at the Glass Consultants UK Stadium, akaCossham Street, our old adversaries TAUNTON TOWN arrive here on Tuesday (24th) at 7.45pm.That’s•going•to•be•another•hard•game,•like•today – and•if•that’s•not•enough,•the•FA•Cup•draw•wasn’tparticularly kind to us in giving us EASTLEIGH away next Saturday. It’s•another•trip•to•Hampshire•&they’re•the•current•Conference•South•leaders•as•well,•so•it•is•perhaps•the•hardest•draw•we•couldhave had. Still, that makes us the under-dogs, we have nothing to lose & you never know, on theday, they might just under-estimate us. Remember Newport 3, MUFC 6 in 2003. Rule out nothing!
