InTallaght ComingThrough Your LetterboxMissing out on some issues of InTallaght Magazine? Not any more....the ladsat Genesis Media the parent company of InTallaght Magazine have come upwith a new way to ensure you get your copy hot off the press without havingto leave your home.

“We have been receiving a lot of phone calls in recent weeks with peopleasking if we could post a copy of the magazine to them which we have beendoing up until now. The magazine seems to be highly anticipated and somepeople have expressed their disappointment at missing an edition due to notpassing our distribution points or not being at the locations when we handthem out.” - Says Duncan, Genesis Media Advertising Manager.

“We believe that door to door is not the answer as we want the magazine togo to the people who are genuinely interested in receiving it. As you canimagine a lot a time and money goes into producing each edition and to haveit thrown away as soon as it hits the floor like most rag mags and free papersis not what we want. To over come this we are compiling a list of people whowant it delivered to them, a very small annual fee for postage and packagingis what we believe is the best way to manage this dilemma” - Says Edward,Genesis Media Managing Director.

InTallaght Magazine is growing from strength to strength, the lads are planningan additional 16 pages for next month’s edition and all editions going forwardand are already in works on their second magazine in a different area alsodue in August. Additionally, their 4th Edition of Tallaght Directory is due to hityour door mat very soon. It promises to be more comprehensive and useful. The lads also plan to release a Digital iPad Version of InTallaght with the releaseof Apple’s new iOS due at the same time as Apple’s iCloud. Amidst the euphoric haze of Oxegen2007, in a muddy field inPunchestown, three young Dublinmusicians decided to form a band. All hailing from the Dublin suburb ofTallaght, supersonic warbler ShaneO'Reilly was joined by laid backbassist Joe Leech and drummingdynamo Callum Mc Adam. And soBipolar Empire was born.

Their stylistic folk infused rock'n'roll, delivered with genuine raw passionand boundless energy, began to drawthe attention of young music fansand as the live shows developed intoa tighter, more intense experience, sothe Bipolar Empire fanbase began toblossom.

In 2009, the band travelled to the USto work with legendary musicproducer, Pat McCarthy (REM,Madonna, U2, Counting Crows), tostart work on their debut album.Working tirelessly and making themost of their time in the US, BipolarEmpire played numerous gigs beforeheading to Austin, Texas, to performat industry showcase South x South-west.

Bipolar Empire had always been asolid three piece but instinctively feltthat there was perhaps a missingingredient, something that wouldtake their sound and live show to thenext level. They approached longtime friend Mark Maguire, a talentedguitarist and song writer, and weredelighted when he agreed to comeonboard.

With Maguire a fully fledged memberof Bipolar Empire, the band went on

to perform a triumphant set at last year'sOxegen Festival, playing to a packed out crowdat the 2FM Hot Press Academy Stage.

Driven by the momentum of a fantasticsummer, the band went back into the studiowith producer Lance Hogan to finish the album. With the album now in the bag, the outra-geously catchy lead single Tempomanic, wasreleased in October 2010. The track wasquickly picked up by 2FM and provided thesoundtrack to their brand new television andradio advertising campaign, 'Come Together'.The band went on the road, playing a host ofvenues around the country before playing alegendary set to a packed out crowd at TheWorkman's Club in Dublin.

Current single 'Feel That You Own It' wasreleased at the start of April, accompanied bya video starring boxing legend Katie Taylor, directed by Kevin Godley. This was followed bytheir debut album of the same name, releasedon April 29th. With 11 tracks brimming withheart bounding beats, thumping base lines, soaring guitars and the unmistakable voice ofShane O'Reilly, 2011 promises to be a massiveyear for Bipolar Empire. Their new single “TripAround The World” is out on July 8th. Thealbum is available to buy from iTunes and willalso be available from all good record storesfrom July 29th. Don’t forget to check the ladsout at Oxegen as they’re sure to put on a goodshow.

The lads recently took time out of their busyschedule to talk to us about their past and fu-ture plans and ambitions...read their exclusiveinterview overleaf.

What is the origin of the name ofyour band "Bipolar Empire"?

We battled over the name of the bandfor a while, we had been known as‘Good News’ & ‘The New Electrics’ butafter having many discussions on find-ing something which suited us all welanded on Bipolar Empire. The originbehind the name is not so profound, there is no real relation to the conditionBipolar although we do feel it will createpositive awareness of the condition andwe thought Empire stands for what wewould like to create with our music.

What is each band members name, what part of Tallaght are you from, where did you go to school andwhich instrument do you play?

Hi, I’m Shane O’Reilly, I’m the leadsinger, I was brought up in Jobstownand went to school at Old Bawn Com-munity School.

Hello, Joe Leach here, I play bass guitarand I’m also from Jobstown and wentto Old Bawn Community School.

Hey, Callum McAdam here and I playdrums. I have lived in a few places butthe majority of my life has also beenspent in Jobstown. I went to St Marks.

Finally, Mark Maguire, lead guitarist, Ilive in Watergate and also went to OldBawn Community College.

Are you self taught in your music orhave your ever had lessons andwhat got you started in music?

Mark - Generally we’re all self taughtafter having the usual music lessonsat school, however there are a fewinteresting influences we would liketo mention;

Joe - My musical influences werecloser to home, my Dad was in a bandyears ago called ‘The Trespassers’,based around Dublin and they per-formed all original tracks so that got meinterested in music from a young age.

Callum - Although I’m self taught aswell I have to thank my best mate as ayoung lad at school, Eoghan O’Brienwho really got me interested in musicand being in a band. He used to havea band called ‘Fear of the Foliage’! Sothanks Eoghan!

Shane - I got into singing in Mosney(Holiday Camp) singing competitions asa young lad so continued on from there.

Mark - Another local musician, DillonKeane taught me my first chords!

Your music style has been referredto as “Stylistic Folk Infused Rock &Roll”, what genre of music do youconsider yourself to be?

Shane - We seem to be quite happywith that description, we’re not sure

who originally described us like that butit sounds quite good so we’re happy tokeep it at that!

How did get the opportunity torecord your album over in LA andwhat was the experience like?

Callum - The opportunity came aboutfrom a guy called Paddy McKillen Jnr,he is one of a couple of key people whoare part of our management, he andSuzanne Doyle pretty much manage ustogether. Paddy sent our CD to aproducer in LA called Pat McCarthy, who he has known for a number ofyears. Pat kept putting off listening tothe CD as he gets a lot of demos hehas to say no to. Once he listened to it,he agreed immediately to work with uswhich was a major development in ourprogression as a band.

Do you see a big difference in musicculture in L.A opposed to Ireland?

Shane - We didn’t really get thechance to experience much of themusic scene over there as we basicallyspent two and a half months in therecording studio. We managed to seea couple of gigs while we were outthere and the bands seemed toconcentrate more on their stageperformance than their musicalcontent, which was a different approach.

Page 17: InTallaght EDITION 05

17

Who writes your songs and whatwould the main themes or topicsfor most of your songs be?

Shane - I mainly write all the songsand we try to write about real lifeissues, things in society and things thatwould influence us. Stuff people canrelate to. An example is ‘Feel like youown it’ was influenced by the LeonardoDiCaprio film ‘Blood Diamond’. The filmis set during the Sierra Leone Civil Warand shows a country torn apart by thestruggle between government soldiersand rebel forces. It also portrays manyof the atrocities of war. So the song isto compare our society and lifestyles.

How long does it take you to writea song on average?

Shane - It depends really, they cantake anything from about 10 minutesand some can just develop over time.

What is your favorite song fromyour new album?

Callam - “Start The Show” becauseI get to do a great drum solo!

Mark - “Human Race” as I think itcreates a really nice atmosphere.

Joe - “Trip Around The World”because of the arrangements.

Shane - Same as Joe, “Trip AroundThe World” as I really like how thesong moves through the arrange-ments through to the end.

What is the one band you wouldlove to tour with?

Mark - Ocean Colour SceneJoe - U2Shane - The StrokesCallum - Guns and Roses, but it wouldhave to have been on their ‘Appetite forDestruction Tour’!!

What are your rehearsals generallylike and do you have a set timeeach week for them?

Mark - We don’t really have muchtime for rehearsals at the minute aswe’re really busy with gigs, which isgreat as we think you can learn somuch more from performing live. It alsogives you more opportunity to bespontaneous which can help you inyour live gigs, which is what rehearsingis all about anyway.

What has been your biggestchallenge as a band?

I think finishing the album and going toLA was a major challenge. When wegot home as well our producer, Lance

Hogan helped finely tune the finishingtouches. We’re really pleased with theway it has turned out.

What is your ultimate direction foryour band and where do you seeyourself in 5 years time?

We want to do our second album andalso increase our range of instruments. In 5 years time we want to be able totour the world, that would be an amaz-ing feeling.

How can your fans gain access toyour music? Do you have a web-site etc?

You can access our music via ourwebsite, Bipolarempire.com, iTunes,Tower Records in Dublin, My Space.

Do you have any upcoming shows?

The remaining show’s we have overJuly and August are;

Renault wants the sun to shine onbuyers of its new Megane Coupe-Convertible whether the roof’s up ordown, with a folding glass roofamong the highlights of its four-seatdrop top.

With a decent boot, space for fourand good looks, we expect plenty ofbuyers will get the opportunity tosample its light and bright cabin.

The Renault Megane Coupe-Cabrio-let marks the completion of a rejuve-nation of the Megane range, with animpressive six models released injust over 18 months.

And it’s quite a finale, with Renaultreleasing a car that looks as goodwith the roof up, as it does down.

Most hatchback-based coupe-con-vertibles are bought on looks, whichis good news for Renault as theMegane Coupe-Convertible is themost attractive model in its class.

Beauty is of course in the eye of thebeholder, but the sweeping lines onthe bonnet lend themselves better tothe drop top than the hatch, coupeand estate models that make up therest of the range. The curved glassroof gives a genuine coupe silhouettewhen in place, and with it folded itsneat swage lines help to disguise theextra bulk at the back.

As is the case with all Renaults, agood level of safety kit is offered, including ABS and stability controland a number of airbags and pop-uproll bars.

General equipment levels are goodtoo. It features keyless entry,Bluetooth connectivity, alloy wheels, automatic Lights and Wipers, cruisecontrol and sat-nav, while the GTadds larger alloys, sports bumpers, rear park sensors, folding mirrorsand GT badging.

In the early days, most coupe cabrioletmodels looked rather ungainly, withhuge distended rears that would openup like something from a Bond movieand then swallow the hood mecha-nism whole. The Focus CC is animprovement from the worst of thosemodels but it still doesn’t get thingsspot on at the back. At least it sortsout the secondary issue with earlyvariations on the coupe-cabriolettheme, the lack of space inside.Focus Coupe-Cabriolet has 500-litresof room when the hood is up,although this does drop when thefolding roof cartridge is in place. A fullfour-seater, the car may not be theanswer to the family motorist’sprayers but it’s a lot more practicalthan its fun-loving agenda maysuggest.

Thanks to a metal folding roof, the308 CC is a convertible that can beused all year round. The roof itselfneatly folds away in around 20seconds with the push of a singlebutton while a clever feature calledAirwave blows warm air around the

The two-piece electrically-operatedhard-top roof whirrs into life at thetouch of a button and takes just 29seconds, with no catches, latches orlevers needing to be manhandled.Once the roof is stowed in the boot, the Focus Coupe-Cabriolet’s lines area good deal more elegant, with aclassic rising waistline and a cleanrear deck. Inside, the car’sdashboard layout follows

the style of other Focus models, butwith a different colour scheme devel-oped to distinguish it as a flagship.

It is a difficult time for employees andemployers in Ireland at the moment.Employees are anxious to find or stayin employment and employers are try-ing to keep their business going whiletrying to hold on to as much staff as ispossible. However, it is the case thatsometimes this cannot be achievedand the employment relationshipbreaks down.

Anyone who works for an employer fora wage has a contract of employment(unless they are independent contrac-tors). While quite a lot of employeesdon’t actually have a written contract, one exists nonetheless. While the lawdoesn’t specifically require an employerto give an employee a written contractof employment, the employer must, under the Terms of Employment (Infor-mation) Act 1994, provide to the em-ployee a written statement detailingtheir terms and conditions of employ-ment within two months of the em-ployee commencing work. If anemployer fails to provide this state-ment, they may face a claim before theRights Commissioner, where an em-ployee can be awarded up to fourweeks wages. At O’Brien Ronayne weregularly attend before the Rights Com-missioner for these claims and can as-sist you in this regard.

It is advisable to have a written contractwithin the workplace, as well as de-tailed policies such as a grievance anddisciplinary procedure, in order to pro-tect both the employer and the em-ployee. This will essentially remove anyuncertainty and will set out the proce-dure for dealing with issues that mayarise such as bullying, harassment, vic-timisation etc. However in small busi-nesses these procedures may not existor can be difficult to implement. If youfeel that you have been subjected to

any of these complaints (or any otherunsatisfactory treatment) you may wellhave a claim against your employerand could be entitled to compensation.O’Brien Ronayne understand that dis-cussing these issues can be stressfuland upsetting however we will do ourbest to provide clear, concise and com-prehensive advice to you in relationthese matters, just contact us.

If a contract of employment is in place, whether it is in writing or not, the con-tract cannot be changed without thechange being agreed by the employerand the employee. If a contract ischanged unilaterally by the employeran employee may well have recourseeither through the courts or throughanother employment forum such as theEmployment Appeals Tribunal.

If an employer is in a situation wherethey do not have enough work for anemployee but it is only a temporary sit-uation they may put in place lay off orshort time working arrangements. Un-fortunately these practices are becom-ing more common during these times.Short time arises where a reduction inan employee’s wages or working hoursis made and such reductions are lessthan half the normal weekly amount.Lay Off on the other hand arises wherethe employer simply is not in positionto provide an employee with work. If ei-ther of these situations occur an em-ployer should explain the reason for itand must keep employees informedabout the situation during its term.

If the lay off or short time situation con-tinues for four weeks or more, or sixweeks in the last thirteen weeks, anemployee can notify their employer (inwriting) that they wish to claim redun-dancy. This must be carried out withinfour weeks of the end of the lay off or

short time. An employer may give anemployee a counter notice within sevendays essentially advising the employeethat the situation is temporary and thatwork will be available within a short pe-riod.

If a counter notice is not issued then anemployee may be made redundant. However as the employee volunteeredto be made redundant, they lose anyentitlement to their notice being issuedpursuant to the Minimum Notice andTerms of Employment Acts.

On the other hand, if an employee hasbeen made redundant by their em-ployer they may be entitled to a redun-dancy payment as well as their noticeunder the Minimum Notice and Termsof Employment Acts. A redundancyarises if an employee’s job ceases toexist. The Redundancy Payments Actsprovide a minimum entitlement to a re-dundancy payment for employees whoqualify for it. In order to qualify, an em-ployee must be at least sixteen yearsold and must be in employment that isinsurable under the Social Welfare Acts.An employee must have worked thenfor a continuous period of at least onehundred and four weeks.

If an employee qualifies for a redun-dancy payment they will be entitled totwo weeks’ pay for each year of con-tinuous employment, any weekly salaryin excess of six hundred euro per weekwill not be taken into consideration inthe calculation. A qualifying employeewill also be entitled to an additional oneweek’s salary (again subject to the sixhundred euro cap).

There are specific rules in relation tothe continuity of service and in relationto service that will be included in thecalculation of the redundancy payment

32

Page 33: InTallaght EDITION 05

(such as rules in relation to sick leave, protected leave etc) which O’BrienRonayne can discuss in more detailwith you if you would like.

Any payment under the above formulareceived by an employee is tax free. Ifan employer makes an additional pay-ment, known as an ex-gratia payment,an employee may receive a furtherbasic exemption on this payment and(provided on the amount) may also beentitled to receive the payment tax free. It is vital that an employer selects stafffor redundancy based on objective se-lection criteria. These criteria must beapplied in a reasonable and fair man-ner. If an employee feels that they wereunfairly selected for redundancy or thata genuine redundancy situation wasnot present they may bring a claim for

unfair dismissal and may be entitled toup to two years remuneration. If youfeel that you may have been unfairlyselected for redundancy or that your re-dundancy was not genuine (ie your jobwas not redundant) please contact usfor more information .

While it is not possible to detail all theprotections available to employees inIreland in this article, it is necessary tosay that, overall, an employer musttreat their employees fairly. An em-ployer has an obligation to protect thesafety, health and welfare of its employ-ees. If an employer does not uphold thisobligation, an employee could well havea claim against their employer.

The relationship between an employeeand employer is important and requires

mutual confidence and trust to operateproperly and smoothly. If that relation-ship breaks down an employee can bein a very vulnerable position and mayrequire the protection of employmentlaw. At O’Brien Ronayne we will adviseyou as to your entitlements and rightsin this regard. Please phone us on 01-424 6200 where one of our Solicitorswill be more than happy to talk to you. .....................................................

LAWNSIf you didn't get around to feeding yourlawn in the spring, you may still applya fast acting lawn feed now, you willreally notice the results. Please makesure to follow the instructions on thebag very carefully as to not do so maycause more harm than good.

Keep the lawn mowed even thoughthis is usually a time when grassgrowth slows. If the weather is dry,mow high, but less often. The key isto only cut one third of the grass atany mowing. Cutting the grass tooshort, or cutting too much of the grassat one time can reduce the ability ofgrass to survive drought stress.

APHIDSIn a jar, put 1 teaspoon washing upliquid and 1 cup of vegetable oil.Shake well. In an empty spray bottle, put 2 teaspoons of this mixture and 1cup of water. Spray every week or upto ten days or more often if requiredto help rid plants of whitefly, mites, aphids, scales, and other pests.

SLUGSAs the weather warms up, perennialswill start growing vigorously. To con-trol slugs and snails, use beer traps, crushed shells or grit. Be careful slugpellets can be effective on slugs, butthey may also poison birds that eat thepellets or the slugs. Container grown

plants, such as hostas, which areprone to slug damage, can be pro-tected by coating the rim of the potwith Vaseline. The slugs won’t crawlthrough it.

HANGING BASKETSBe sure to check the hanging basketsand container grown plants every dayduring hot weather and about everysecond day on overcast summerdays, preferably when the sun isn't onthem. Don't just check the surface, push your finger into the compost tomake sure there is enough moisturebelow throughout the root area. Waterthem thoroughly each time you water, but be careful not to over water them.Clay pots can be positioned on traysfilled with wet gravel. If you have a lotof window-boxes and hanging bas-kets, you should consider installing anautomatic watering system controlledby a timer. You can also water hang-ing baskets by putting ice cubes onthe top, moisture is slowly released asthe ice cubes melt. Ensure these donot touch the plants as this may causedamage.

PRUNINGPrune back your rose bushes after thefirst bloom. You can either dead headthe spent blooms or do a major cut-ting back to keep them neat and tidyand under control. I tend to do the lat-

ter. Cut back all weak and dead woodas well. Lastly, clean up all deadleaves, especially if they suffered fromblack spot. Plus, if black spot is aproblem, use the following homemadeformula: Mix one tablespoon of bakingsoda and a 1/4 teaspoon of dish-washing detergent in one gallon ofwater and spray as needed. Manyspring flowering shrubs will benefitfrom pruning in early summer as thiswill give them time to make the newgrowth necessary for next year's flow-ers before the end of the season......................................................
