科學、社會與持續發展系列Science, Society and Sustainability Series

This series aims at introducing Lingnan community to science, sustainability and environmental issues through seminars and workshops. By exposing students to real-life societal and global cases, students will be challenged to live a more environmental-friendly lifestyle, think and act responsibly for a sustainable future.

《砂戰風雲》紀錄片欣賞會 - 砂亦有盡時?Film Screening - Sand Wars: Will sand run out?

Objectives: At the end of the screening, students will be able to: 1. Discover the use of sand in the society; 2. Understand the impact and consequences of sand mining to the

environment and also the development of the society; and 3. Enhance the awareness of sustainable living.

Description: Every house, skyscraper and glass building, every bridge, airport and sidewalk in our modern society depends on sand. We use it to manufacture optical fibre, cell phone components and computer chips. We find it in our toothpaste, powdered foods and even in our glass of wine!

However, is sand an infinite resource? Can the existing supply satisfy a gigantic demand fuelled by construction booms? What are the consequences of intensive beach sand mining for the environment? Will one day those grains of silica surrounding our daily lives become used up?

Based on encounters with sand smugglers, barefoot millionaires, corrupt politicians, unscrupulous real estate developers and environmentalists, this investigation takes us around the globe to unveil a new gold rush and a disturbing fact: the “SAND WARS” have begun.

Description: Invasive species is a major threat to biodiversity, leading to the extinction of many species globally. In Hong Kong, we know little about the impacts of invasive species on local ecosystems. Red-eared sliders are released via deliberate release and is common throughout Hong Kong. In this talk, the speaker will show how he evaluates the ecological impacts of the introduction of this species using various tools, including population surveys, fecal analysis and stable isotope. The information gathered in this study will inform effective management and public education related to non-native species, pet and religious release. I will highlight what Hong Kong citizens can do to help this emerging issue.

The strongest implications are heat waves and how they can affect daily life and in general public health. Therefore the development and application of adaptation possibilities and action for different time frame (heat health warning systems, climate oriented planning, heat action plans).
