Integrated Reservoir Modelling2

Conference Overview

Three-dimensional reservoir modelling has experienced tre-mendous progress during the last few decades. The technology is now routinely used by IOCs, NOCs and service companies. Academic research also significantly contributes as students are trained to run case studies with new modelling tools at University.

Obviously, to minimise the uncertainty associated with these models, they need to be constrained by as many geological concepts and as much multi-disciplinary data as possible. In ad-dition to well data, quantified geological concepts and seismic and dynamic data are the main sources of information. Emerg-ing approaches couple reservoir models with geomechanical models or provide multi-scale workflows from the pore to reservoir simulation scale. The speed of integration is also crucial, as the ‘seismic to simulation’ workflow still takes far too much time.

This conference focuses on the latest developments in inte-grated reservoir modelling and their implications for reservoir management and field development strategies. Particular emphasis will be put on field applications and the validation of new technologies that have emerged over the last few decades. Special emphasis will be given to case histories and examples of multi-disciplinary integration. Open discussions will be encouraged on successes, failures, issues associated with the practical use of academically-developed techniques and lessons learned since integrated reservoir modelling be-came mainstream technology.

Within the broad area outlined above, the event will place emphasis on developments and field applications in the fol-lowing areas.

Who should attend? The conference will appeal to different disciplines involved in reservoir characterisation, including geophysicists, geologists, reservoir engineers, simulation engineers, petrophysicists, earth modellers and geomechanics. Researchers and academia will also benefit from participating in this event.

Integrated Reservoir Characterisation and Modelling

Instructor: M. Le Ravalec, IFPEN

A central goal in reservoir characterisation is to provide reliable reservoir models that are used to predict oil production, investi-gate various production scenarios and eventually help decision makers to optimise field development. The more data-consistent the model, the sounder the predictions. Thus, the key point is the integration of all available data into reservoir models.

The one-day course addresses the joint integration of static and dynamic data into reservoir models as it is practiced today and as it will be practiced in the future. It looks at existing and emerging integration techniques, interdisciplinary integration and uncertainty estimation.

Course Content• Integrated reservoir characterisation workflows• Geological modelling and static data integration• Dynamic data integration under geological constraint• Uncertainty propagation• Case studies

About the instructorMickaele Le Ravalec is an IFPEN expert with over 15 years of reservoir modelling experience. Her research interests are in inverse theory, reservoir characterisation, uncertainty quantifi-cation and optimisation. Mainly involved in research projects at IFPEN, she also spent one year as a secondee in an operational team from Total with activities in heavy oil recovery. Mickaele was awarded the Michel Gouilloud-Schlumberger Prize by the French Academy of Sciences in 2011.
