    Inresponsetothepressureforincreasedproductivityofsystemadministrators,

    servervendorshaverespondedwithmanagementtools. Dellsofferingisthe

    DellOpenManagesuiteofproducts. Whiletheseproductscoversoftware

    deployment,hardwareconfiguration,assetmanagement,remotesupport,and

    systemhealthmonitoring,thispaperisfocusedonmonitoringsystemhealthon

    acollectionofservers.

    TodothisusingDellsOpenManagetools,OpenManageServerAdministrator

    instrumentationisinstalledonsupported*DellPowerEdgeservers,andone

    instanceof

    OpenManage

    IT

    Assistant

    is

    installed

    and

    configured

    for

    monitoring

    theinstrumentedPowerEdgeservers. ErrorsdetectedbyServerAdministrator

    arethenforwardedviaSimpleNetworkManagementProtocol(SNMP)toIT

    Assistant,wheretheyareloggedandcangenerateemailandpaging

    notifications.

    SinceaHewlettPackardSystemsInsightManager5.0environmenthasthe

    samearchitecture,itispossibletointegrateinstrumentedDellPowerEdge

    serversintoHPSIMbytakingadvantageoftheindustrystandardinterfacesof

    SNMPandHypertextTransportProtocolSecure(HTTPS)inServer

    Administrator. Thisallowsadministratorstocontinuetousetheirexisting

    HPSIMbasednotificationprocesseswhilefullybenefitingfromtheuseofServer

    Administratoron

    supported*

    Dell

    servers.

    HPSIM5.0hassomebuiltinthirdpartydevicesupport,includingsomeDell

    servers. InsomecasestheDellservercanbedetectedandmanagedfromthe

    defaultHPSIMinstallationwithoutanyfurthercustomization. However,the

    builtinthirdpartydevicesupportmaynotbecomprehensive,especiallyfor

    newerPowerEdgemodels,anditisrecommendedthattheDellprovidedMIBs

    areusedtomonitorDellservers.

    ThispaperdetailsthespecificstepsneededtoaddaDellPowerEdgeserver

    runningMicrosoftWindows2000Serveror2003StandardServertoan

    environmentcurrentlybeingmanagedbyHPSIM5.0. Toaddaserverrunning

    NetWareorLinux,theHPSIMandOpenManageServerAdministrator

    configurationwouldbethesame,withtheprimarydifferencebeinghow

    OpenManageisinstalledandSNMPisconfiguredateachmanagedPowerEdge

    server.

    ToprovideanexampleofhowtointegrateDellPowerEdgeserversintoan

    environmentmanagedbyHPSystemsInsightManager5.0,twoDellPowerEdge

    serverswereconfiguredtoreporttooneinstanceofHPSIM. WindowsServer

    2003wasinstalledonaDellPowerEdge500SC,Windows2000Serverwas

    installedonaPowerEdge2650,andWindowsXPProfessionalwasinstalledona

    DellPrecisionM70. TheDellInstallationandServerManagementCD4.5,which

    includesServerAdministrator2.2andStorageManagementService1.2,was

    usedtoinstalltheoperatingsystemandmanagementsoftwareonbothDell

    PowerEdgeservers. HPSystemsInsightManager5.00.00.02wasinstalledonthe

    DellPrecisionM70alongwithHPSIMsdefaultinstallationofMSDE.

    ThefirststepistoproperlyloadandconfiguretheDellserverasthemanaged

    systemtotalktoHPSIM5.0. Iftheoperatingsystem(OS)hasnotyetbeen

    loaded,thentheeasiestprocessistousetheDellInstallationandServer

    ManagementCDtobothloadMicrosoftWindowsandconfigureSNMP. Ifthe

    OShasalreadybeenloaded,thenonlySNMPneedstobeinstalledand

    configured. OnceSNMPisconfigured,OpenManageServerAdministratorcan

    beinstalled.

    What SNMP configuration should I use?

    ThedefaultSNMPcommunitynameispublic,butusingthatcouldallowa

    roguemanagementstationtoaccessyourservers. TheSNMPcommunityname

    islikeapasswordbothHPSIMandServerAdministratorneedtocommunicate.

    Toenhancesecurity,accesscanbereadonly. ThisprohibitsusingSNMPto

    makechangestotheserver,suchaschangingthresholdsettingsorshuttingit

    down,butallowsServerAdministratortosendalertstoaconsolewhenstatus

    changes. ADellPowerEdgeservercanfunctioninareadonlySNMP

    environment,but

    it

    is

    possible

    that

    other

    devices

    need

    SNMP

    set

    to

    read

    write.

    IftheintentwereforHPSIMandITAssistanttocoexistinthenetworkto

    providethefullOpenManagecapabilities,thenitwouldbenecessaryto

    configuretheDellPowerEdgeserverwithreadwriteSNMPpermissions. Inthis

    wayITAssistantcanperformconfigurationsettingsremotelyonthemanaged

    Dellserver. NotethatDellsecuresReadWriteoperationsusingSNMPonlyto

    comefromDellOpenManageITAssistant.

    SNMPtrapdestinationsalsoneedtobespecified. ThesearethehostnamesorIP

    addressesofoneormoresystemsthataretoreceivenotificationofevents.

    Forthis

    paper,

    the

    community

    name

    of

    showcase

    with

    read

    only

    rights

    was

    used

    withasingletrapdestinationtothePrecisionM70runningHPSIM. These

    settingsneedtobemadeoneachDellserveraddedtotheenvironment.

    Using the Dell Installation and Server Management CD to load the OS andSNMP

    OneoftheCDsthatshipswitheveryDellPowerEdgeserveristheDell

    InstallationandServerManagementCD. ThisCDisbootableandisusedto

    performacompleteoperatingsysteminstallationfromlocalmedia. Itcopiesthe

    operatingsysteminstallationfilestotheserverandautomaticallyintegratesthe

    appropriateDelldriversandsoftwareintotheOSinstallationfiles.

    ThePowerEdge2650and500SCintheconfigurationtestedforthispaperwere

    bootedfromtheDellInstallationandServerManagementCDandthemenus

    werefolloweduntiltheEnterConfigurationInformationfor:MicrosoftWindows200xServerscreenwasreached. Onthatscreen,theAdvancedbuttonwasclickedtoshowtheadditionalsettingsthatcanbesetbyServerAssistant.

    InstallSNMPischeckedbydefault,butitisalsonecessarytoenteraCommunityNameandTrapDestinationandchangetheAcceptedCommunityNames

    from

    public:Read_Only

    to

    showcase:Read_Only.

    The

    rest

    of

    the

    defaultscanbeleftunchanged.

    SNMP Configuration After OS installation

    IftheServerAssistantCDhasnotbeenusedtoloadtheOSandconfigureSNMP,

    thenthefollowingstepsshouldbeperformed. Thefirstistoensurethatthe

    SNMPcomponentisinstalled. AfterselectingtheAdd/RemoveWindows

    ComponentsinthelefthandoftheAdd/RemoveProgramsdialogboxofthe

    ControlPanel,theWindowsComponentsaredisplayed. Highlighting

    ManagementandMonitoringToolsandthenselectingDetailsbringsupthe

    optiontocheckSimpleNetworkManagementProtocol(SNMP).

    AftertheSNMPserviceisinstalled,itsparameterscanbesetbyrightclickingon

    theSNMPserviceinServiceManagertoopenthePropertiespanel. Here,the

    communitynameofshowcaseandtrapdestinationcanbesetinthesecurityand

    trapstabs. TheseareshowninFigure2.

    thisfromthesystemhostingHPSIMtestsnetworkconnectivity,thatthe

    1. Copy10892.mibanddcstorag.mibfromtheDCMIBxxfolderto\ProgramFiles\HP\SystemsInsightManager\mibs

    2. BecauseHPSIMgeneratesanerrorwhenaMIBhasafilenamethatcontains

    onlynumbers,rename\ProgramFiles\HP\SystemsInsightManager\mib\10892.mibtonew10892.mib,andforconsistencyalsorename

    dcstorag.mibtonewdcstorag.mib.

    dell10892.mibanddellarymgr.mib(usedwithDellsolderArrayManagerstorage

    managementtool)alreadyexistinthisfolderbecausetheycomewiththedefault

    installationofHPSIM. Itisrecommendedthatthesenamesbeavoidedforthenew

    filestoavoidconfusionwiththeHP andDellprovidedMIBs.

    Compiling the MIBs

    CompilingtheMIBscreatesanintermediate.cfgfilethatHPSIMcanlater

    register. TocompiletheDellMIBs:

    1. Openacommandwindow(cmd.exe).

    2. Usingthecdcommand,changeworkingdirectoryto\ProgramFiles\HP\SystemsInsightManager\mibs.

    3. Enterthecommandmcompilenew10892.mib. TheMIBshouldcompileandreturnthemessageMibCompilationcompletedsuccessfully.

    4. Enterthecommandmcompilenewdcstorag.mib. TheMIBshouldcompileand

    return

    the

    message

    Mib

    Compilation

    completed

    successfully.

    RegisteringMIBstoHPSIMistheprocessthatmapstheSNMPinformation

    receivedfromtheDellservertonumbersandcharacterstringsthatcanthenbe

    usedforidentificationandnotificationmessages. RegisterbothessentialMIBs

    asfollows:

    1. Enterthecommandmxmibanew10892.cfg. ThecfgfileshouldregisterandreturnthemessageCOMMANDCOMPLETEDSUCESSFULLY!.

    WhenanewsystemisdetectedviaapingsweeporwhenreceivingaSNMP

    Trap,itisaddedtotheHPSIMdatabase. TheSystemTypeManagerthendoesa

    sequenceofqueriestothenewdevicetodetermineitsidentity. Thestepsbelow

    configureHPSIMtolookforspecificinformationintheDellprovidedMIBsto

    tellSystemTypeManagerthatthedevicefoundisaPowerEdgeserver. This

    onlyneedstobedoneonce,asallDellserversrunningServerAdministrator

    appearthesamewaytoHPSIM.

    ThestepsusedtoconfiguretheDeviceTypeManagertorecognizeaDellServer

    are:

    1. StartandlogintoHPSIM.

    2. SelectOptions >ManageSystemTypes.3. OntheProductmodelidentificationruleslist,scrolldownandselectDell

    ServerwiththeSNMPprotocol.4. Topreventconfusionandsimplifyadministration,clicktheDeletebuttonto

    deletetheexistingDellServerentry,andclickOKtoconfirm.

    5. ClicktheNewbutton. TheNewRulepanewillopenbelow.

    Whilevalues

    may

    be

    manually

    entered

    in

    the

    dialog

    boxes

    presented

    in

    the

    New

    Rule

    window,queryingaDellserverforthesevaluespreventstypographicalerrorsand

    providesverificationthatSNMPcommunicationisworkingproperly. Inthisvane,

    thequeryingtoolswithintheNewRulewindowwillbeused.

    6. BesideSystemobjectidentifierclicktheRetrievefromsystembutton.TheRetrievefromsystempanewillappearbelowthecurrentpane.

    7. IntheRetrievefromsystempanechangetheCommunitystringtoshowcase.

    8. EnterthehostnameorIPaddressofthetargetDellsystemintheTargethostnameorIPaddresstextbox.
