The continued growth o the population and o cities

has made management o urban transportation

a challenge or public and private entities.

Inormation technology cannot be let out o the

inrastructure sectors development, and much o

Latin America is looking to Chile, which has become

a leader in urban highway management.

The business model or Chiles urban highways

has become a case study or many Latin

    American governments whose representatives

visit Santiago to acquire a more detailed

understanding o not only its ree ow capacity

but also its toll collect ion system.

And although it would seem that the use o

electronic tags - the key devices o this system -

is restricted to highways, the truth is that there

is plenty o room or applying this technologyto other purposes and or other users, such as

parking lot concessionaires or or logistics

companies in general, who can take advantage

o the inormation they provide to improve

    operational efciency and competitiveness.

Looking to the futureWhen government support, the decision toinvest by private companies and technologycome together in pursuit o a common goal, asit did with Santiago, Chiles urban highways, success is not mere coincidence.

An example thatcrosses bordersA system similar to the one in Santiago isabout to be inaugurated on a highway in the

northern portion o Bogot, Colombia. Theconcessionaire in charge is Desarrollo Vial delNorte, Devinorte.

Beyond the highways:using tags elsewhereA clear example o the use o the tagso motorways comes rom Chile as well, specifcally in Valparaiso, where these devicesare used to track trucks and customize theirroutes based on cargo and the stops they needto make.
