I. Holy Father’s Prayer Intentions for the Month

The Elderly : That the elderly, sustained by families and Christian communities, may apply their

wisdom and experience to spreading the faith and forming the new generations.

II. OUR BISHOP SPEAKS

Mother Mary in Our Daily Life

1. Preamble

François Mauriac, a famous French writer, said: “The more a person gets old in life, the more the

person feels the need of a mother”. In its face value it may look like an emotional statement. But an

authentic life experience of an adult would not deny it. A person, who advances in age, undergoes a

variety of experiences. Particularly in today’s context there are: the avidity to possess more money

by any means; the attempt to aim at successes in one’s career at any cost; creating the defeat for

suppression of the competing persons and forces; the busy life schedule and facing several types of

constraints at the personal, economic, social, political and changing cultural contexts. All these tend

to alienate a person from one’s own roots, from friends, from relatives and even not excluding one’s

own marriage partner. At that time the person experiences a sense of loneliness with a concomitant

feeling that no person understands what one undergoes and accepts the person with one’s defects and

failures. It is at that moment the feelings emerges like a cooling and healing breeze in one’s life, that

one’s own mother would be the only person who could understand and accept the person as one is.

The person starts yearning for that emotional embrace of the mother which no other person could

offer in one’s life.

The person in actual life may or may not have such a person as a mother because the mother is either

dead or she was a different sort of person. But the longing is very actual and natural which, the

person deep down in one’s life, yearns for. It is particularly true for a priest in today’s life situations.

The Catholic Church is the Unique Body that offers Mother Mary with such a maternal care. Just as

a person could believe in one’s own mother as described above any Catholic could also experience

such loving embrace from Mary as a mother, through one’s faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, at a

very crucial moment of his life on the cross, handed over to humanity a great gift, His own mother,

who stood by Him by thick and thin in all circumstances of life. He bequeathed His mother as a last

gift by offering her to humanity (Jn.19/26-27). Any Catholic or person coming to her with faith in

her loving embrace during crucial moments of one’s life, experiences a comforting and healing hand

of Mary, as a loving mother.

As I conclude this year 2017 with the reflections of Pope Francis to his priests, I wanted to share

Pope’s own love for Mother Mary and his advice to his priests on it. We have heard that, in the life

of Saint John Paul II, Mother Mary by her embrace protected Saint John Paul II when he was shot by

a machine gun from close quarters by someone from Afghanistan. Late Pope John Paul II forgave

the assailant magnanimously and as a model of a true Catholic. He even went to meet him in person

to the prison to give his embrace of friendship. That event changed the life of the assailant radically.

Mary our mother does not fail at all to save like that each and every one of us from physical dangers

and from the attacks of satan.

2. Mother Mary as Our Loving Mother

(Refer Pope Francis, Devoted to Mary, by Peggy Weber, Creative Communications for the Parish,

Division of Bayard, U.S.A. 2017.)

Pope Francis very aptly points out to us that we have two loving Mothers: the Universal as well as

the Particular Church and Mother Mary. When Pope was asked as to what Mary meant for him. “She

is my mama” was the spontaneous reply. He visits his mama regularly through prayer and by

travelling to her shrines. He said in June 2016 “A Christian without the Madonna is an orphan. And

a Christian without the Church is an orphan” A Christian needs these two women… the Church and

the Madonna... To make a test of a good Christian vocation one needs to ask oneself “How is my

relationship with these two mothers going?”

3. Pope Francis on the Power of the Rosary

For Pope Francis, praying the rosary is what makes him connect everyday to Mary. He is of the

opinion that praying the Rosary and being devoted to Mary is applicable to everyone and more

essentially to those, dedicating their lives to God, priests, Rev.Sisters and Rev.Brothers. When he

went to Naples in March 2016, he spoke to a group of Religious and Clergy that in order to make

Jesus, the Centre of their lives, he said “Ask His mother to take you to Him.”

During the World Youth Day in 2013, he told those attending the Conference that praying the rosary

is one of the best ways of knocking at the door of Mary’s House. He confessed that his witnessing

and experiencing the great example and deep devotion of late Pope John Paul II who was at a prayer

service at Buenos Aires in Argentina in 1985, greatly enriched his life on devotion to Mary. He

recalled his experience: one evening. Cardinal Jorge Borgoglio, the present Pope, went to recite the

holy rosary that was being led by late Pope John Paul II. Late Pope John Paul II was in front of

everybody on his knees, praying the rosary with great devotion. The present Pope Francis got

immersed in prayer on his knees. Both were praying in the middle of the people of God, led by the

Shepherd, late John Paul II. He deeply felt inspired by the piety and devotion of this person, chosen

to lead the Church. He was following a path up to his mother in heaven, a path set out from his

childhood. Pope Francis became aware of the weight of the words of Mother Mary of Guadalupe to

Juan Diego. “Do not be afraid. Am I not here, I who am your Mother?”

The above experience was decisive in his life to pray frequently the Rosary throughout the day. At

one gathering in November 2013 in Vatican city, he gave a box to everyone. The box looked like a

first-aid kit, given to 80,000 people in St.Peter’s Square, containing a holy card, with a chaplet of the

Divine Mercy, as a guide on how to pray the rosary and the chaplet, He said: “It is a special

medicine which will help you. It is a medicine that consists of 59 beads as well as a spiritual help for

our souls, for spreading love, forgiveness and brotherhood everywhere.”

Pope Francis loves the connection that the prayerful moments of the rosary could give to people as

they pray to connect them to Mary, our Mamma. In spite of his busy schedules and travels, he takes

time to pray the rosary three times a day. He admonishes others to pray one rosary every day. Pope

Benedict also encouraged families to spend time to pray the rosary daily. He said that with the

rosary, we allow ourselves to be guided by Mary, model of faith, in meditating on the mysteries of

Christ. Thus day after day each one is helped to assimilate the Gospel through the meditation on the

mysteries of Christ that can shape our lives.

4. Visit of Pope Francis to Several Shrines of Mary

Page 6: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

6

Pope Francis visited several Marian Shrines in the World. We cite only a few of them to take for

ourselves, particularly for priests, a great inspiration from the present Pope to venerate Mary with

different perspectives.

4.1.Our Lady of Fatima

In October 2017, on the centenary anniversary of “the miracle of the Sun” Pope Francis consecrated

the World to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. It was in St.Peter’s Square that Pope Francis stood

before the Original Statue of Our Lady of Fatima, brought to Rome for a special visit. He dedicated

the World and asked Mary to help “revive and grow” the faith. With a devout faith he appealed

“Blessed Virgin Mary of Fatima, with renewed gratitude for your motherly presence, we join in the

voice of all generations that call you blessed. Accept with the benevolence of a Mother this act of

entrustment that we make in faith today, before this your image, beloved to us”.

In August 2015, Pope said “Virgin of Nazareth, Mary, the first human person who believed in God

by accepting the flesh of Jesus. Let us learn from her, our Mother, joy and gratitude for the gift of

faith, a gift that is not private but shared. It is the life of the World.”

In 2016, he continued his praise for Mary, expressing “She asks us to never offend God again. She

forewarns all humanity about the necessity of abandoning oneself to God, the source of love and

mercy”.

Our Lady appeared six times to three shepherd children: Lucia, Francisco and Jecintha, between

May 13 and October 13, 1917, in the little village of Fatima. She asked the Children to devote

themselves to the Holy Trinity and to pray the Rosary every day to bring peace to the World and an

end to World War I. It was a long and tragic war, that had just entered into its fourth year. She also

asked the children to help increase the devotion to her Immaculate Heart.

In her last apparition, it has been reported that Mary gave a great sign (the dancing Sun) as a way of

proving that she was truly there. There were 70,000 witnesses on October 13, 1917 in Fatima to see

this sign. It is reported that all could stare at the sun without blinking or even hurting their eyes. The

phenomenon was described thus: the sun rotated got larger and smaller and danced in the sky.

The children said that Mary gave them three secrets to reveal to the World. In a series of writings

that Jacintha was asked to do she had narrated about them. In 1941 she shared the first secret that

was revealed to her in July 1913. It was a vision of hell that the children were allowed to see. The

second secret was: World War I is about to end, but if men do not cease to offend God there will

begin a worse one in the Pontificate of Pius XI… the punishment of the world is at hand for its so

great sins by means of war, famine and persecutions, directed against the Church and the Holy

Father. The third secret was written down by Lucia in 1944 and was given to a Portuguese Bishop. It

was sent to Vatican in 1957 and finally revealed in 2000 by late Pope John Paul II. She wrote “we

saw an Angel with a flaming sword in his left hand; flashing, it gave out flames that looked as

though they would set the world on fire, but the flames died out in contact with the splendour of Our

Lady that radiated towards the Angel, that cried out in a loud voice: ‘Penance Penance, Penance!’

The secret also spoke of a Bishop dressed in white going up a steep mountain and being killed along

with many other bishops, priests and religious.

Late Pope John Paul II did give the credit to Our Lady of Fatima with saving his life when he was

shot in St.Peter’s Square in 1981. He donated the bullet that wounded him to Fatima. It was placed

on the top of the crown of the Blessed Mother.

The feast of Our Lady of Fatima was approved by the local Bishop in 1930 on May 13th

.It was added

to the Church’s worldwide liturgical calendar in 2002. About 4 million people visit Fatima each

year.

Page 7: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

7

Two of the children, Francisco and Jacinta died in 1919 and 1920 respectively, as told by our Lady

to them, due to the great worldwide flu epidemic. The third one, Lucia, became a Carmelite nun and

died at the age of 97 in 2005.

Mary believed the words of the angel and she continues to go out and help others to believe. She was

called blessed by Elizabeth, because she believed, what was said by the angel would be realized and

she was called blessed because of her belief in God’s word. We need to follow her in our belief.

4.2.Our Lady of Guadalupe

(Guadeloupe is a French colony from 1674, in Eastern West Indies consisting of islands. This is a

French Tourist place for past decades. We are not speaking of this place when we speak about Mary

of Guadalupe which is totally a different place in Nuevo Leon State, Northeastern Mexico. Our Lady

appeared to Juan Diego, a Mexican and spoke in his native language).

The feast day is celebrated on December 12th

every year. Our Lady of Guadalupe’s veneration of

Mary is like that of Our Lady of Vailankanni in India. Madonna to many, Pope Francis, during his

visit in 2016 said that it was the central point of his trip to Mexico and told Mexicans that the

devotion is a part of their special inheritance.

He said that God aroused the hope of the little ones, the suffering, of those displaced or rejected, of

all who feel that they have no other worthy place in their lands. He spoke in his homily “God came

close and still comes close to the suffering but resilient hearts of so many”.

She appeared in 1531 to a native person, Mr.Cuauhtlatoatzin, whose baptism name was Juan Diego,

a 75 year old widower, living in a small village near Mexico city in Latin America, On December

9th

, as he was on his way to participate in the Holy Eucharist he heard music while travelling on the

way near a hill. Then he saw a shiny cloud with a young native lady on the top of the cloud, dressed

like an Aztec Princess. She spoke to Juan Diego in his native language and told him to request the

local Bishop to build a chapel on that spot. The Bishop told Juan Diego to ask the lady for a sign.

Being a very simple person Juan Diego made that request to her. She gave a bouquet of roses in the

winter which he gave to the Bishop. In addition she gave another miracle, namely his tilma (cap or

paucho) had a large and permanent image of Our Lady of Guadalupe on it. Further Juan Diego

reported that Our Lady told him: “My dear little sons, I love you. I desire you to know who I am. I

am the ever Virgin Mary, the Mother of the true God, who gives life and maintains its existence. He

created all things. He is in all places. He is the Lord of Heaven and Earth. I desire a church in this

place where your people may experience my compassion. All those who sincerely ask my help in

their work and in their sorrows will know my Mother’s heart in this place. Here I will see their tears.

I will console them and they will be at peace”.

Devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is one of the largest devotions of Mary in the world. Her

appearance is credited with the conversion of seven million Aztecs. Her shrine is housed in a

Cathedral that seats 10,000 worshippers. It is a major pilgrimage site and attracts 18 to 20 million

visitors every year.

In 1977, Juan Diego’s tilma (cape) was examined after 446 years using infrared photography. It was

determined that no brush strokes were used to make the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. And the

miraculous image continues to marvel since it has not faded away or worn out even today. It is an

inspiring symbol of Our Lady.

4.3.Mary, Undoer of Knots

In 1986 the then Father Bergoglio saw the painting of Our Lady of Undoer of Knots in Augsburg,

Germany. He said that it helped him in his prayers and struggles. He brought the devotion back to

Argentina. The notion of Mary as an Undoer of Knots, dates back to second century. St.Iraneus

Page 8: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

8

wrote that the knot of Eve’s disobedience was loosened by Mary’s obedience. The first chapel to

bear the name of ‘Mary, Undoer of Knots’, was built in Austria in 1989.

The painting by Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner (1625-1707) features the Blessed Mother on a

crescent moon and around her angels and a dove, representing the Holy Spirit. Above that are circles

of stars. Mary is not just standing; she is working. She unties knots into a long strip. And her foot is

stepping on the head of a ‘knotted’ snake.

Mary, Undoer of Knots, has a special connection to Pope Francis who is largely responsible for the

recent spread of the devotion to this image of our Mary. He continues to spread it. In St.Peter’s

square in October 2013, he spoke extensively of the “knot of disobedience and the knot of unbelief”.

When children disobey parents after reaching the year of maturity, we can describe it as ‘knot’,

especially if there is a lie involved. This breaks trust with their parents as well the relationship with

their parents. It needs to be purified i.e undone. Something similar happens in our relationships with

parents and friends. It needs to be purified i.e undone. The same happens in our relationship with

God when we turn away from Him.

Pope Francis said, “when we do not listen to Him, when we do not follow His will… a kind of knot

is crated deep within us. These knots take away our peace and security. But we know … nothing is

impossible for God’s mercy! Even the most tangled knots are loosened by His grace. And Mary,

whose ‘yes’ opened the door to God to undo the knot of ancient disobedience, is the Mother who

patiently and lovingly brings us to God.”

A “Knots Grotto” was built next to the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia

(U.S.A). During the first visit to the United States of America by Pope Francis, the Pontiff stopped

and prayed at the grotto which contained more than 100,000 strips of cloth on which prayers were

written.

We experience the pain of knots when we try knitting. There is a lot of untangling, pulling out and

fingering out. Perhaps you have a rosary, made from cord or rope that became knotted and you can

experience this unknotting no that easy. There is a special prayer to Mary, the Undoer of Knots,

given as an annexure. This prayer can help us to undo the knots of our lives.

5. To Conclude

Pope Francis visited several Shrines of our Lady, very famous in different parts of the world. I have

shared only 3 places of Mary’s Shrine, he visited. To my knowledge he visited in 1982, Our Lady of

Lujan, Buenos Aires, Mexico; Our Lady of Aparecida in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2013; Our Lady of

Quinche, Ecuador; in July 2015, Our Lady of the Miracles of Maria de Caacupé, in Paraguay; in

2015 and our Lady of Knock in County Mayo, Ireland in 2018.

What is very apparent in all these apparitions and the others in other parts of the world was that

Mary is trying to make her presence known to us throughout time and all over the globe, irrespective

of race. She always appeared in small villages and to very simple, ordinary and humble people,

especially from the poor class. Her message is clear and is one of trust and love to God. She shows at

every time as to how much she loves us and wants us to bring our needs to her to be taken to her son,

Jesus Christ, as it happened at Cana of Galilee. She was a model of fidelity and concern, especially

for those in great need. We need to be grateful to Mary for guiding the humanity and offering us

through her a wonderful way to come close to Jesus.

She is particularly very close to every priest and she wants each one to grow like Jesus and pattern

their lives in the love of Christ. It is the parish priest who should show the way to his faithful in his

parish by his own personal devotion to our Lady. Our diocese has several shrines and parishes

having Mary as a patron. Unless the priests show a great personal devotion to Mary, the Marian

devotion could not be spread or deepened only by novenas and feast celebrations. The personal life

Page 9: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

9

of every parish priest should lead every Catholic to a deeper Marian devotion and piety. Just as the

Holy Spirit played a special role in her life, may the same Spirit lead us and guide us in our day to

day activities in the parish.

Novena Prayer

to Mary, the Undoer of Knots

Virgin Mary, Mother of fair love, Mother who never refuses to come to the aid of a child in need, Mother whose hands never cease to serve your beloved children because they are moved by the divine love and immense mercy that exists in your heart, cast your compassionate eyes upon me and see the snarl of knots that exist in my life.

You know very well how desperate I am, my pain and how I am bound by these knots.

Mary, Mother to whom God entrusted the undoing of the knots in the lives of His children, I entrust into your hands the ribbon of my life.

No one, not even the evil one himself, can take it away from your precious care. In your hands there is no knot that cannot be undone.

Powerful Mother, by your grace and intercessory power with Your Son and My Liberator, Jesus, take into your hands today this knot...I beg you to undo it for the glory of God, once for all, You are my hope.

O my Lady, you are the only consolation God gives me, the fortification of my feeble strength, the enrichment of my destitution and with Christ the freedom from my chains.

Hear my plea.

Keep me, guide me, protect me, o safe refuge!

Mary, Undoer of Knots, pray for me.

Prayer from Pope Francis

Mary, undoer of Knots, pray for us:

Through your grace, your intercession and your example, deliver us from all evil, Our Lady, untie the knots that prevent us from being united with God, so that we, free from sin and error, may find him in all things, may have our hearts placed in him, and may serve him always in our brothers and sisters. Amen.

Ref: Holy Father’s Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2018

Your Eminence / Your Excellency,

On behalf of the Migrants and Refugees Section of the Dicastery for promoting Integral Human

Development, we are happy to introduce Ms. Naoko Maruyama who is serving as the regional

coordinator for east and Southeast Asia. She is based in Manila and hopes to meet you personally

soon.

We are pleased to send you the link of the Holy Father’s Message for the World Day of Migrants

and Refugees that will be celebrated officially on 14 January 2018. The theme is: “Welcoming,

protecting, promoting and integrating migrants and refugees”. The document is available for

downloading at the following link:

Message of his Holiness Pope Francis for the 104th World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2018

Page 27: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

27

In his Message, the Holy Father invites all believers and everyone to engage proactively in the

process leading to the 2018 Global Compacts. To promote such involvement, the Migrant & Refugee

Section has prepared a document, Twenty Action Points for the Global Compacts, which presents

many elements of Catholic advocacy towards the two Compacts. The Holy See has transmitted the

Twenty Action Points to the United Nations as its official input for the current consultations and

intergovernmental negotiations related to the global compact on migration.

Please find the text at the following link:

Responding to Refugees and Migrants: Twenty Action Points for the Global Compacts

The Section has also prepared a pastoral version of the same points to be shared with all those

involved in the Church and others concerned with those forced to flee. The pastoral version may be

found here:

Responding to Refugees and Migrants: Twenty Actions Points Pastoral Version

We thank you in advance for distributing the Message and the 20 Pastoral Points within the Church,

and 20 Action Points towards the Global Compacts with policy makers in your country or region.

Ready to respond to your comments and questions, happy to receive news from your area, and with

assurance of our prayers for your apostolic mission.

Devotedly in our Lord,

Fr. Michael Czerny S.J. Fr. Fabio Baggio C.S. Naoko Maruyama

Under-Secretary Under-Secretary Regional Coordinator

XI. OTHER INFORMATION

LITURGICAL DONTS

1. The main celebrant does not delegate his role as Presider at any point of the Celebration

(GIRM 108; 250).

2. Do not change the Presider’s role by saying bless “us” rather than bless “you”.

3. Do not turn the pages of the Missal while people are reciting or singing the Gloria or

responding to a prayer you have said.

4. Do not disrespect the Altar, the symbol of Christ through unnecessary clutter - whether it be

the Missal, ciboria, chalices, candles, mike or anything else (GIRM 306).

5. Do not place the Missal in the centre during the Eucharistic prayer and obscure the sacred

species that is to be visible to the people. The Missal is always to the left of the celebrant at

the altar.

6. Do not place flower vases and other decorative things on the altar (GIRM 305).

7. Do not place microphone stand, Missal, missal stand on altar at the very beginning, Likewise

for the concluding rite the altar should be bare. The microphone, etc., could be placed on the

altar during the preparation of the gifts.

8. Do not begin and conclude the Eucharist from the Altar. It should be from the Presidential

Chair.

9. Do not go to the celebration without checking the microphones. Microphones differ.

Page 28: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

28

10. Do not be casual in your comportment when you celebrate. Celebrant should avoid

unnecessary gestures, calling the sacristan, altar servers, directing people in the assembly,

etc., from the Presidential Chair or Altar (or sanctuary).

11. Do not rush through the Prayers.

12. A Priest should not join a Concelebration or be admitted as a concelebrant once Mass has

already begun (GIRM 206).

13. Do not let the electronic or musical instruments dominate the singing.

14. Do not choose difficult hymns which the assembly may not be able to participate. Liturgical

music that mimics the sounds of secular music should be left outside the Church.

15. Do not locate the choir aside or in a balcony apart (GIRM 312).

16. Do not make the choir perform for the assembly. Do not use mobile phones to read the text

of the hymns during a liturgical celebration. After Communion a sacred silence may now be

observed for some time, or a psalm or other canticle of praise or a hymn may be sung (GIRM

88, 164).

17. Concelebrants do not accompany the main celebrant while incensing.

18. Do not replace it with any “secular” greeting” such as “Good Morning, the Lord is with you”

(GIRM 50).

19. Do not impose your personal piety on the faithful by adding extra prayers. Do not stretch out

hands over the people at the penitential rite as if you are giving absolution; it is not the

sacrament of reconciliation. The purpose here is to prepare to celebrate the sacred mysteries

(GIRM 51; RS 80). Avoid making stiff gestures or half-gestures (such as one-handed

impositions or blessings).

20. Sing or recite ‘The Gloria’, as in the Missal: The Text of this Hymn may not be replaced by

any other (GIRM 53).

21. We do not use “Tablets”, “IPads” for proclamation of the Word in the Liturgy. The books

used in the liturgical celebration are usually blessed or reserved for sacred use.

22. Do not proclaim from any other Bible, book, leaflet or Dairies that are available in Catholic

Book Stores. Do not deliver the Homily at the Lord’s Table or the Altar. Do not begin or end

a homily with a sign of the Cross or Amen, since the homily is an integral part of the

liturgical celebration. Do not allow Commentator (GIRM 105b), Choir director use the

Ambo.

23. Do not sing or recite any hymn or song in place of Responsorial Psalm.

24. Do not raise the Book of the Gospels when saying “The Gospel of the Lord”; It is the Gospel

Proclaimed and not the Book that is referred to.

25. The Priest who proclaims the Gospel is not expected to carry the Book of the Gospels to the

Bishop to be kissed. The deacon is mentioned (GIRM 212).

26. Do not begin or end a homily with a sign of the Cross or Amen, since the homily is as

integral part of the liturgical celebration.

Pastoral letters in which the bishops desire to expand on a particular topic in greater detail do

not take the place of the homily. Sometimes they are summarized at Mass after the post

communion prayer and distributed in full, using other appropriate means of communication.

If a bishop considered a particular social or pastoral situation to be of notable gravity, he

could mandate that it be read at the time of the homily.

27. According to the Order of Christian Funerals, there is never to be a eulogy at a funeral Mass

(OCF 27), although the celebrant may express a few words of gratitude about the person’s

life in his homily, or he may allow a relative or a friend to say a few words about the

deceased during the concluding rite (GIRM 89). The remarks must be brief and under no

Page 29: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

29

circumstances can the deceased person be referred to as being in heaven. Only the Church

has the authority to canonize.

Contrary to common assumption, the purpose of the funeral Mass is not to celebrate the life

of the deceased but to offer worship to God for Christ’s victory over death, to comfort the

mourners with prayers, and to pray for the soul of the deceased. Relatives or friends who

wish to speak of the deceased’s character and accomplishments can do so at a prayer service

to be held in a home or funeral home or at the graveside following the rite of committal.

28. We do not substitute the approved creedal formulas with other texts.

29. We do not combine the Prayer of the Faithful which is part of the Liturgy of the Word with

the Offertory Procession which is part of the Preparation of the Gifts (GIRM 138, 139, 177,

178). These are distinct even if, related rites.

30. Do not bring an empty chalice at the offertory procession but the bread and the wine in

appropriate containers.

31. Do not bless the water that is put into the chalice at the offertory (“By the mystery of this

water and wine” GIRM 142).

32. The pouring of the Blood of Christ after the consecration from one vessel to another is

completely to be avoided (Redemptionis Sacramentum 105).

33. Concelebrants should not block the faithful from the view of the sacred action at the altar.

They should not concelebrate if they take part in the choir or are photographers. Two things

cannot be done at the same time.

34. The priest does not break the Host at the consecration; Mass is a celebration not a

dramatization. The fraction is in view of communion.

35. At the elevation of Host and Chalice the people do not make any acclamation (e.g., My Lord

and My God, etc. . .)

For the Acclamation by the faithful do not use verses that are not one of the three

acclamations found in the Missal (e.g., He is Lord. . .)

36. Do not alter or add any words to the Eucharistic Prayers or change an approved text e.g.

when we pray for the Pope and Bishop. Just follow the Missal and pray only for the Pope and

local ordinary. Addition of names of other bishops who are present is not to be done. The

word “bishop” is to be used even if it is an “archbishop” (GIRM 149).

37. Do not raise other chalices and Ciboriums at the great Doxology even if there are other

concelebrants (GIRM 180).

38. Other acts are not inserted with in this rite (e.g., announcements and other pious devotions).

Do not relocate the sign of peace to another part of Mass.

Do not touch the paten and chalice before giving the sign of peace. Celebrant is there in

“Persona Christi”.

39. Do not break the Bread during the Institution Narrative (Consecration).

The proper text “Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world. . .” is not to be

substituted by any other song.

40. Extraordinary ministers do not go to distribute Communion with just their religious habit on.

They should use prescribed liturgical vestment prescribed by the Conference or Local

Ordinary. Extraordinary ministers do not take the ciborium from the altar, it must be given by

the celebrant after they are administered Holy Communion themselves. Extraordinary

Ministers are not to delegate anyone else (RS 159). They do not minister outside the

celebration of the Mass (RS 155).

41. Do not have other Prayers, Announcements, etc., before the Post Communion Prayer. They

break the Communion Rite. Do not add a Litany of thanksgiving.

Page 30: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

30

42. We do not play taped music/CD/ cell phones/pen drives during a liturgical celebration. It

goes against the authenticity of what liturgical music should be.

Liturgical documents presume that liturgical music is sung or played live by those

participating in the celebration.

43. Do not change the Sunday Mass for Ordinations, ordination anniversaries, marriage and

marriage anniversaries. The Sunday Mass Prayers are to be followed.

A wedding may be celebrated at any season of the year, although during the penitential

seasons of Advent and Lent it is not encouraged and couples are asked by the Church to

consider the special nature of these times and keep it simple. On Sundays of Advent, Lent

and Easter, the liturgy of the Sunday with the wedding rites inserted is used. This is also the

case whenever marriage is celebrated within a parish Mass on other Sundays.

Whenever the Nuptial Mass is used, white vestments are worn.

On the following days, however, weddings may not be celebrated within the Mass: Easter

Triduum, Christmas, Epiphany, Ascension, Pentecost, Corpus Christi, and any solemnity that

is a holiday of obligation (cf. GIRM 332, 333).

Funeral Mass not on solemnities that are, holy days of obligation, Holy Thursday the Easter

Triduum, and the Sundays of Advent, Lent and Easter” (GIRM 380, emphasis added).

44. Do not have a dance as a performance especially in the sanctuary.

45. The readings of the liturgy and the Presidential Prayers should never be projected on to

screens. People must listen and their attention should be to the ambo. Similarly during the

more sacred moments like at the Eucharistic Prayer, there should not be projections, except,

perhaps, for providing the text of the acclamation and then just at that moment only.

There should not be projection of any pictures - still or moving during the celebration. It can

lead the attention away from the centre of celebration towards the projected visual rather than

to the Mystery upon the altar.

*Thanks to Rev. Fr. Rollington, the Liturgist, for reminding the presbyterium of the Don’ts in

the Liturgical Celebrations…..

XII. NEWS FROM THE CATHOLIC WORLD

Prot.1170/GenSec2017 (3-b-10/CBC1-GC) 2nd November, 2017

PRESS RELEASE

Beatification of Sister Rani Maria

The Catholic Church in India rejoices on the occasion of the Beatification

of Sr. Rani Maria and gives thanks to God for giving the people of India another

Saint as a model to imitate and as an intercessor in Heaven. Sr. Rani Maria will be

beatified on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at Indore. Cardinal Angelo Amato, the

Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, is coming down specially

from the Vatican to preside over the Ceremony. All four Indian Cardinals, the

Apostolic Nuncio to India, nearly 50 Bishops and hundreds of Priests, Sisters and

lay faithful will participate in the Solemn Ceremony.

Page 31: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

31

Sister Rani Maria Vattalil, a member of the Franciscan Clarist Congregation, was slain on

25th February, 1995. According to the Police she was stabbed 54 times in front of more than 50 bus

passengers in a jungle area near Udainagar (Madhya Pradesh) allegedly at the behest of

moneylenders affected by the nun's social work among village women, who were organizing self-

help groups.

The Beatification of Sister Rani Maria is a declaration by the Pope as head of the Church that

the deceased Sister had died a martyr's death and is now dwelling in heaven. As a process, the

beatification consisted a long examination of the life, virtues, writings, and reputation for holiness.

Sister Rani Maria will now be called “Blessed” and may be venerated by the faithful in India and

some other specific places.

Samandar Singh, the man who served a prison term for the 1995 murder of Sr. Rani, told

Asia News in 2010 “I accept full responsibility for my heinous murder of Sr. Rani Maria. I cannot

say that I was instigated, because my own hands stabbed her repeatedly and for this, I will regret my

actions till the day I die.” He went on to say “In my own small way, I try to follow her example,

helping those who are less fortunate than me, like Tribal Christians and all those who are

marginalised.”

The whole Catholic Church, while being filled with joy also looks upon Blessed Rani Maria

as a model of sacrifice and selfless witness. As the Bishop of Indore, Bishop Chacko Thottumarickal

expresses it so beautifully: “Blessed Rani Maria is a model for us as she was ready to shed her blood

for the sake of the poor and downtrodden”. The President of the CBCI, Cardinal Baselios Cleemis,

the Cardinal, Office-Bearers and Bishops wish the people of Indore all God’s blessings. We take this

opportunity to thank the Government of India and the Government of Madhya Pradesh for all the

support given to the Catholic Church in organizing this celebration.

May the Blessed Rani Maria intercede for us in our work for the deprived and marginalized

sections of our society.

God bless India.

ranks of martyrs of our time. May her sacrifice be seed of faith and peace, especially in Indian soil.

She was so good. She was called the smiling Sister.”

3. November 13, 2017 Pope Meets with Heads of Roman Dicasteries

On November 13, 2017, Pope Francis met with the Heads of the Dicasteries of the Roman Curia in

the Bologna Hall of the Apostolic Vatican Palace, reported the Holy See Press Office, without

giving any details on the meeting’s order of the day.

It was the ninth meeting of this nature, over which the Pontiff presides twice a year.

According to the Italian online site of Vatican Insider, on this occasion the participants reflected on

vocations, discernment, formation of seminarians and priests, stemming from the document of the

Congregation for the Clergy entitled “The Gift of the Presbyterial Vocation” (Ratio

Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis), published in December 2016).

Vatican Insider revealed that the Holy Father and the Heads of Dicasteries reflected in particular on

the document’s paragraph 120, which stipulates: “The call to become Pastors of the People of God

calls for a formation that enables future priests to be experts in the art of pastoral discernment,

namely, that they be capable of a profound perception of real situations, and of good judgment in the

choices to be posed and the decisions to be taken. To practice pastoral discernment it’s necessary to

put at the center of one’s life evangelical listening, which frees the Pastor of the temptation to be

abstract, to ‘act alone,’ to be too sure of himself and to have a cold and dry attitude, which would

make of him “an accountant of the spirit” rather than “a good Samaritan”…The Pastor will learn to

come out of preconceived certitudes, and will not consider the ministry as a series of things to do, or

Page 33: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

33

norms to apply, but he will make of his life a “’place’ of hospitality and of listening to God and to

his brothers.”

The 93-page document paints a portrait of tomorrow’s priests: neither hypocrites nor rigid, having a

sense of beauty. The priest will diagnose the specific temptations in the exercise of the ministerial

priesthood: the experience of “personal weakness,” “the risk of feeling himself a functionary of the

sacred,” “the challenges of the contemporary culture,” “the attraction of power and wealth,” the

challenge of celibacy,” “the total dedication to the ministry,” which can be blunted with time (n. 84).

Pope Francis expressed the qualities to be cultivated: “humility, courage, a practical sense,

magnanimity of heart, uprightness of judgment and discernment, tolerance and transparency, love of

truth and honesty” (n. 93).

4. November16, 2017 Pope to Clergy: Follow the Good Shepherd

Dear priests,

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” (Psalm 133, 1). These verses of

the psalm go well after the words of Msgr. Magrin, president of the International Confederation

Apostolic Union of Clergy. It is truly a joy to meet and to feel the fraternity that arises among us,

called to the service of the Gospel following the example of Christ, the Good Shepherd. To each one

of you, I address my cordial greeting, which I extend to the representatives of the Apostolic Union of

the Laity.

In this Assembly you are reflecting on the ordained ministry, “in, for and with the diocesan

community”. In continuity with previous meetings, you intend to focus on the role of pastors in the

particular Church; and in this rereading, the hermeneutic key is the diocesan spirituality that is the

spirituality of communion in the manner of the Trinitarian communion. Indeed, the mystery of the

Trinitarian communion is the high model of reference for the ecclesial community. Saint John Paul,

in his Apostolic Letter Novo millennio ineunte , recalled that “the great challenge facing us in the

millennium which is now beginning” is precisely this: “to make the Church the home and school of

communion” (43). This involves, in the first instance, “[promoting] a spirituality of communion,

making it the guiding principle of education wherever individuals and Christians are formed” (ibid).

One becomes an expert in spirituality of communion primarily thanks to conversion to Christ, to the

docile opening to the action of the Spirit, and by welcoming one’s brothers. As we are well aware,

the fruitfulness of the apostolate does not depend only on activity or on organizational efforts,

although these are necessary, but firstly upon divine action. Today as in the past the saints are the

most effective evangelizers, and all the baptized are called to reach towards the highest measure of

Christian life, namely, holiness. This is even more applicable to ordained ministers. The World Day

of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests, which is celebrated every year on the Feast of the Sacred

Heart of Jesus, constitutes an ideal opportunity to implore of the Lord the gift of zealous and holy

ministers for His Church. To achieve this ideal of holiness, every ordained minister is called to

follow the example of the Good Shepherd, who gave His life for His sheep. And from where can we

draw this pastoral charity, if not from the heart of Christ? In Him the celestial Father has filled us

with the infinite treasures of mercy, tenderness and love: here we can always find the spiritual

energy indispensable to be able to radiate His love and His joy in the world. And we are led to Christ

every day also in the filial relation with our Mother, Mary Most Holy, especially in the

contemplation of the mysteries of the Rosary.

Page 34: INTER NOS Vol. 63 December 2017 No. 12

34

Closely linked with the path of spirituality is commitment to pastoral action in the service of the

people of God, visible today and in the concreteness of the local Church: pastors are called to be

wise and faithful servants who imitate the Lord, who don the apron of service and bend to the lives

of their communities, to understand their history and to live the joys and sufferings, expectations and

hopes of the flock entrusted to them. Indeed, Vatican Council II taught that the right way for

ordained ministers to achieve holiness is in “[performing] their duties sincerely and indefatigably in

the Spirit of Christ”; “by the sacred actions which are theirs daily as well as by their entire ministry

which they share with the bishop and their fellow priests, they are directed to perfection in their

lives” (Decreto Presbyterorum Ordinis , 12).

You rightly highlight that ordained ministers acquire the right pastoral style also by cultivating

fraternal relations and participating in the pastoral journey of the diocesan Church, in its

appointments, its projects and its initiatives that translate the programmatic guidelines into practice.

A particular Church has a concrete face, rhythms and decisions; it must be served with dedication

every day, bearing witness to the harmony and unity that is lived and developed with the bishop. The

pastoral journey of the local community has as an essential point of reference the pastoral plan of the

diocese, which must take precedence over the programs of associations, movements or any other

particular group.

Dedication to the particular Church must then be expressed more broadly, with attention to the life

of all the Church. Communion and mission are correlated dynamics. One becomes a minister to

serve one’s own particular Church, in obedience to the Holy Spirit and one’s own bishop and in

collaboration with other priests, but with the awareness of being part of the universal Church, which

crosses the boundaries of one’s own diocese and country. If the mission is an essential quality of the

Church, it is especially so for he who, ordained, is called to exercise the ministry in a community

that is missionary by nature, and to educate in global outlook. Indeed, mission is not an individual

choice, due to individual generosity or perhaps pastoral disillusionment, but rather it is a choice of

the particular Church that becomes a protagonist in the communication of the Gospel to all peoples.

Dear brothers, I pray for each one of you and for your ministry, and for the service of the Apostolic

Union of Clergy. May my blessing accompany you. And remember: do not forget to pray for me.

5. November 22, 2017 Sri Lanka: New Bishop Appointed

6. November 24, 2017Santa Marta: A Church Isn’t a Supermarket

A church must not be a “supermarket,” said Pope Francis during the morning Mass he celebrated at

Santa Marta Residence in the Vatican, on December 24, 2017. He pleaded for gratuitousness and

“God will do the rest.”

In his homily, reported by Vatican Radio, the Holy Father said: “if we enter a church often with

sadness; we think of a parish, a Bishop, I don’t know . . . and we don’t know if we are in the House

of God or in a supermarket.”

There are “shops there; there is also the list of recompenses for the Sacraments,” he added. “What is

lacking is gratuitousness, and God saved us gratuitously; He didn’t make us pay anything.”

There is certainly need of money to maintain the churches and the communities, but <if> “you give

gratuitously God will do the rest,” assured the Pontiff. “God will do what is lacking.” Churches must

be “churches of service, free churches.”

First Service, then Ornamentations

The Pontiff also invited to protect “God’s temple,” which is “our heart”: “the Holy Spirit dwells in

us. But what is going on in our heart? Have I learned to watch over myself, so that the temple of my

heart is only that of the Holy Spirit? . . . Are you paying attention, are you paying attention to what is

going on in your heart? Who comes, who goes . . . what feelings do you have, what ideas? Do you

speak with the Holy Spirit? Do you listen to the Holy Spirit? . . . Do I know how to protect this

temple?”

The Holy Father stressed that it’s about “purifying the temple, the interior temple and of watching . .

. To be attentive to what is going on in our temple, in us.”

Jesus is also “present in the sick, in those that suffer, in the hungry, in prisoners.” His is a presence

that calls for taking care of this temple “by my service.” “Do I approach to help, to dress, to console

those that are in need?”

“Saint John Chrysostom reprimanded those that made many offerings to decorate, to embellish the

physical temple and didn’t take care of the needy. He reprimanded them! And he said: “No, that’s

not right. First service, then ornamentations.” Therefore, purify the temple which others are,”

stressed the Pope.
