Research - Interactive MediaGaming consoles

Gaming consoles like Sony Ps series or Microsoft Xbox series or Nintendo etc… has a controller and a video decoder. Gaming con-soles allow the players to play any kind of games in a high quality. Gaming consoles have their very own controllers which can be connected by a wired cable or by blue-tooth connectivity. There are many buttons on the controller which can be interacted with, each of the buttons have their very own purpose in different games. Gaming controllers also come with a video decoder. Video decoder essentially is a machine that uses CD’s to turn the CD into electri-cal image that is displayed on your TV/monitor screen.

Gaming consoles have operating systems too. For example, an Xbox 360 uses Windows 2000 operating system and a newer console like Xbox One uses Hyper-V and Windows 10 based Xbox OS. Other known consoles like Sony Playstation 4 uses a different operating system. Ps4 uses Orbis OS which is a modified version of FreeBSD

These interactive maps are set out all around the shopping centre to make it easier for newcomers and tourists to find their way around when lost or to find a shop they are specifically looking for, or to find where exactly in the centre they are at. All this is carried out on an interactive screen that is displayed and can be manoeuvred around with just a simple touch of a screen.

There are many different brands of phones and many different types of operating system for the phones. Most known operating systems are called Android and Apple IOS.

This type of Interactive Media is non-linear as you can go to differ-ent places and apps, It does not move in a sequence but in a random order.

Research - Harry Beck

Henry Charles Beck was born in Leyton, London, 4 June 1902 and died on the 18th of September, 1974 (Aged 72) in Southampton, United Kingdom.

Henry Beck was an English technical draughtsman.

Harry Beck’s London Underground Tube Map was drawn in his spare time while working as an engeering draftsman.

Harry Beck’s London Underground Tube Map is inspired by an electrical circuit diagram. The London Underground Tube Map has been laid out geographically. However Harry Beck who had the idea of creating a full system map in colour. He believed that Underground passengers were not concerned with geographical accuracy and were more interested in how to get from one station to another and where to change trains.

Harry beck submitted his idea to Frank Pick of Lon-don Underground in 1931 but it was considered too

radical because it didn’t show distances from stations to stations.

Harry beck’s Under-

ground Tube map was

give its first full publi-

cation in 1933 ( 700,00

copies)Harry Beck influenced

many other countries to

design their tube maps like

he did.

He is known for creating the present London Un-deground Tube Map in 1931.

Harry Beck’s tube Map

The picture below shows the old London tube Map. The old map was particularly difficult to work out as it was all over the place. It confused people who were using it.

Old London tube Map

This is a map Harry Beck de-signed. It was a revolutionary design which changed the whole idea of what the Tube Maps should look like. Instead of the map being all about the place, the map was designed to be simple but innovative. This means the railways will no longer be messy and all about the map, but be in organised order. Beck’s map was also colour coded. Each district had their own colour which made everything seem easier to be read.

Google Maps

There are many interactive maps that allow you to find a specific place or a shop. How-ever, the most used interactive map is called - Google maps. It allows people to track their location, or to get from one point to another, google maps can show you how to get from one point to another turning on a gps on the map. You can also use a tool called “Street view’ which allows you to look from the stree point of view and look all around that area. You can use your arrows keys to move along the street while in ‘street view’ mode to ex-plore the street a little bit.

Ordnance Survey (OS Maps)

This map is very similar to Google Maps. It also has a lot to offer to the user. Just like Google Maps it shows you your location, or the location you want to get to, it shows you the best routes to take to get to your destination as quick as possible. However, it does not have a ‘street view’ feature like Goog-le Maps has. However, it has other interesting features that Google Maps do not.

Ealing Broadway - Street veiw.

Examples of maps.I have chosen these top 3 map illustrations as i found the way the ground/land looks like. I think that in my own pro-ject, i will try to make my interactive map’s ground look like that as it gives it a realistic look.

I also like the fact that, all the maps are set on an island. I think that is some-thing i will be going for too in my interactive map project.

I have chosen these bot-tom 3 map illustrations as i was looking for maps that have unique and in-teresting map Icons.

Those maps will give me a rough idea on how i should make my own res-taurant icons look like.

For example, Wagamama restaurant. I can create an illustration for that build-ing like the second bottom map illustration done.
