Lesson ObjectiveO Pupils will be able to describe a

programme of work and methods of practice within it

O Pupils will be able to describe the effect that a programme of work will have on their overall performance.

Shadow Practice• I mimed the shot. I went through the motions of the

shot without actually hitting the shuttle. • This meant that I could get a feel for the action – I

felt comfortable with it. • Practicing in isolation meant that I could get

fluency and timing in my action and movement. • I did not have the external pressure of trying to hit

the shuttle • Movement started from base and always returned

to this point• I worked for 30 seconds and repeated this 3 times

in total

Repetition Drill: hand feedO I got a classmate to stand side on to me mid court and

throw high feeds just in front of my body so that I was stepping into the clear, transferring my weight forwards as I contacted the shuttle.

O I concentrated on keeping my arm straight at contactO The hand feed drill was slow and accurate giving me

plenty of time to “groove” the action and improve my timing.

O With this drill it was easy to spot faulty techniqueO Another classmate observed me executing the drill to

ensure I was doing it correctly.O I completed the practice 20 times and included a target

area (back tram lines) which I aimed to reach with each shot.

Repetition Drill: hit from 3 points at the back of the court

O I repeated the previous drill from a rear court position because I now wanted to put power into my shot and this is where I would have to play my clears from in a game situation.

O I continued to focus on keeping my arm straight and transferring my weight when striking the shuttle.

O I did this 20 times and my classmate continued to observe me and give me feedback.

O A racket feed is more realistic because of the pace of the shuttle.

O It also may not be quite as accurate and small adjustments may be necessary.

O A target again was included in this practice to motivate me and give visual feedback.

Repetition Drill: with movement

O In the next practice, I introduced movement. O I stood in the central base position and a feeder played

high feeds to the back of the court.O This meant I had to consider my footwork to the back of

the court to get into position in plenty of time to play an overhead clear and then return to base after contacting the shuttle.

O This put me under slight pressure and made the practice more game like.

O Timing and fluency were important at this stageO I continued to focus on eliminating faults in technique

through repetition until my body learns to produce the movement automatically.

O I had to return to base after every shot and I repeated this 20 times.

Effect of Practices on whole performance.

O The technical action of my overhead clear was now comparable with the model performer.

O The action was more consistent as I was able to hit the key target areas of the back of the court.

O In addition because the action is now automatic I am able to move my opponent around the court pushing them to the back and then placing their return to the front.

O I was able to use my clears as a tactic to move my opponent from their central base position and open up space to attack.

Effect of Practices on your whole performance

O Tactically the clear is used to push opponents to the back of the court – I now had far more time to return to a central base position.

O I could play my clear so far to the back that it made I prevented my opponent from playing a smash as he could not smash from such a deep position on the court.

O I could use my clear as a building shot – i.e. I could keep him pinned to the baseline and wait until he made a mistake, allowing me to take advantage and play a wining shot.

Question…..O As a result of using these practices, how

did your overall performance improve (4).

O 10 minutes.
