ABOUT THE CENTER

The Greater Palm Bay Senior Center is a 501(c)(3) corporation (non-profit) operated entirely by volunteers. The center has no paid staff and no tax dollars are used in the operation.

The building is deeded to the city and leased by the center for $10 per year. The city pays for some exterior and interior maintenance. All other expenses are paid using revenues from bingo, membership fees, rentals, fund raisers, etc. The yearly expenses for the Center total approximately $160,000.

The Center has 2923 members. There are about 1234 Life members, 85 Golden members and the rest are Regular members. 150 members are volunteers that perform the work to run the center and produce the revenue to support operations. 44 of these volunteers do not participate in any of the recreational and social activities. 775 members actively enjoy the use of the facilities for activities such as cards, billiards, ping pong, mahjong, bocce, exercise, dancing and many others. It cost over $200 per year per active member to keep the Center open.

A portion of the fee for this course will be donated to the center for providing the space, the comfort of air conditioning for the class and coffee. The remainder goes toward the purchase of computers and supplies (for and other equipment used in the class, some software, CD's and printing class handouts, etc.).

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE

REQUIREMENTS FOR WINDOWS 10

Windows 10 Pro **6GB memory (8 or more is better)Internal CD/DVD2 GHz processor 2 processor cores (4 is better)

**Lower levels of Windows 10 (Home, etc) leave out important function that may prevent some software functions from working.

More memory is required to provide room for the new paging mechanism that compresses memory of programs that are loaded but not active.

A number of Microsoft functions continuously run hogging the CPU. Having extra processor units reduces the impact of the user.

How can you determine what is in your computer?

UPGRADING A WINDOWS 7 OROLDER COMPUTER

Windows 10 Pro upgrade will cost $199, Windows 10 home upgrade is $100

WHAT IF MY COMPUTER DOES NOT MEETMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

If your system has a socket for the processor, you may be able to upgrade the processor. (New processor must have same pin-out as the socket. (Desktop usually have socket for CPU, laptops usually do not.) A new processor that meets the above minimum will cost approximately $80. A two core processor cost approximately $40.

The crystal for the clock is usually soldered to the system board so you cannot run a faster processor.

Typically there is additional sockets to add more memory. Most laptops have an extra slot which will allow you to double the memory.

Moore's Law

The law is named after Intel co-founder Gordon E. Moore, who described the trend in his 1965 paper. The paper noted that the number of components in integrated circuits had doubled every year from the invention of the integrated circuit in 1958 until 1965 and predicted that the trend would continue "for at least ten years". His prediction has proved to be extremely accurate. The law is now used in the semiconductor industry to guide long-term planning and to set targets for research and development.

CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT

The CPU is the computer (or microprocessor) that executes instructions in the Windows operating system and application programs. These programs are stored on the hard drive. The programs are loaded in the computer memory (RAM) when opened. The programs access and modify data that is stored in RAM. The data may be saved on the hard drive or CD ROM. The programs also communicate with the user via keyboard, mouse and monitor using operating system interfaces.

Currently there are two major manufacturers that make CPU devices for computers that run Windows; Intel and American Micro Devices (AMD). Most laptops today have a label that tells which manufacturer's chip is in the computer. Intel has 95% of the market.

Both manufacturers make processors with two and four cores (CPUs) in a chip. Both manufacturers make processors with 32 bit and 64 bit wide data buses. Both manufacturers plan to build processors with 128 bit data buses.

The bus width is the number of bits (bytes x 8) that the processor gets from memory at one time.

13

COMPUTER MEMORY

What is computer memory?

Memory in a personal computer today is typically 2GB to 6GBWhat does that mean?

A bit is a binary digit and can contain either a 1 or a 0A byte of memory is 8 bitsA byte can contain a number from 0 – 255The contents of a byte may represent a character, a number or part of a number, or a computer instruction To represent larger numbers requires more bytes; e. g. it takes 32 bits to represent the number 4 billion (4,294,967,295).

A kilobyte is 1024 bytes or approximately 1000 bytesA megabyte is 1,048,576 bytes or approximately 1 million bytesA gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes or approximately 1 billion bytesA terabyte is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes or approximately 1 trillion bytes

Each byte of memory of memory has an addressThe address first byte of memory is 000000 (zero)

Memory in personal computers today is typically “Dynamic Memory”The most important thing for you to know today about dynamic memory is that when computer power is turned off everything in memory is lost. This Is called volatile memory.

What is flash memory?

Flash memory is a type of semiconductor memory that retains information when no power is applied. This type of memory is called non-volatile.

Flash memory is used in cameras, thumbnail drives, and solid state disk drives.

14

Flash memory ranges in size from 2 GB up to 32 GB in thumbnail drives. There is more memory in one 16 GB thumbnail drive than in all of the computers NASA used during the Apollo project to put a man on the moon.

For more information about computer memory see:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_memory

MONITORS

Computer monitors have increased in capability in the same way as CPUs, perhaps not on the same scale. Today monitors are constructed using Liquid Crystal (LCD) and Light Emitting Diodes (LED) technology allowing screen resolution to increase while lowering weight and cost. These are a great improvement over the CRT displays and they weigh a lot less.

For more information about displays see:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_display_standard

KEYBOARDS

Computer keyboards have the same keyboard layout that has been used for typewriters for almost a century. This layout is called “QWERTY” for the position of the keys in upper row. For today's purposes we will concentrate on the alphabetic and numeric keys (also known as alphanumeric keys), and the CTRL, ALT, Backspace, Enter (or Return), Delete, Shift, Caps Lock, and Num Lock keys.

15

NETWORK

The computer interface to the internet is via a router and modem. Sometimes the router and modem are contained in a single unit. The computer connection to the router may be a cable or by wireless signals.

Most routers have connections for four or more computers or devices. The number of wireless devices that may connect to a router is much larger.

If you experience a loss of internet connection you can try this before you contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP):

1. Turn your computer off (Shutdown)2. Unplug the power to your Modem and Router3. Wait approximately 60 seconds4. Plug the modem power in5. Wait 60 seconds6. Plug the router power in7. Wait 60 Seconds8. Turn on your computer

If this doesn't solve your problem, contact your ISP

WHAT IS AN OPERATING SYSTEM?

An operating system is software (computer instructions) that controls the computer hardware and provides an interface to execute application programs and provides interfaces that application programs use to communicate with humans and attached devices (keyboard, mouse, monitor, printer, network, etc.)

There are two major operating systems for IBM compatible personal computers: Windows and Linux. Windows dominates the market with over 95%. Apple computers use IOS, an operating system designed by Apple Computer.

The computers used in this class are running the Windows 10. The operating system is called Windows NT (for New Technology).

The operating system is typically stored on the disk drive. The standard designation for the primary disk drive (where the operating system is stored) is C:

When you turn your computer on the operating system is automatically loaded into memory from the disk drive. The operating system user interface is the first thing your usually see. You may see a login screen if there is more than one user on the system or if the only user account is password protected.

After you log on to an account, you will see the Windows desktop for that user.

17

WHAT IS WINDOWS 10?

Windows 10 is the latest generation of Microsoft's operating system. The core of the operating system is called the NT Kernel (NT is short for New Technology).

Windows 10 is intended to be a cross platform product (PC, tablets, smartphones, embedded systems, Xbox, Surface Hub and Windows Holographic).

Issues and concerns expressed by Windows 10 users:

Windows 10 update installs all updates automatically, no longer allows users to selectively install updates.

Windows 10 updates may be downloaded from Microsoft or from another PC accessable over a network. Your PC may be used as a source for downloading other PC's.

Policy concerns were also voiced by critics and advocates, as the operating system's default settings and certain features require the transmission of user data to Microsoft or its partners.

Microsoft has also received criticism for how it has distributed Windows 10 to users of existing versions of Windows, which has included the automatic downloads of installation files to computers without expressed user consent and recurring display of pop-ups advertising the upgrade.

Critics characterized the initial release of Windows 10 as being rushed, citing the incomplete state of some of the operating system's bundled software (such as the Edge web browser), as well as the stability of the operating system itself on launch.Microsoft Account and One Drive provide many opportunities for invasion of privacy.

18

WHAT IS AN APPLICATION PROGRAM?

First, an application program is not part of the operating system. It can be removed (uninstalled) and the operating system still functions. An application program provides the user with some function that is not normally available in the operating system.

An application program relies on the operating system to communicate with the user. The application program needs the operating system to get started (launched/opened). It also needs the operating system to

• Display information on the screen• Print information• Receive mouse and keyboard inputs• Store data on disk drive, retrieve data from the disk • and many other functions

Examples of useful applications:• Windows Explorer• Internet Explorer• Outlook mail program• Windows Media Player• Wordpad (and other word processing programs)• Spreadsheet programs• Turbo Tax

19

TURNING ON YOUR LAPTOP

All of the laptops have a power button (round) above the keyboard on the left side or in the center. Press and hold down the button for about 2 seconds.

Shortly you should see a boot message. (Booting is the process of loading the operating system into memory from the disk drive.) After the system has completed the boot process, you will see the Login screen. The Login screen has three icons:Sys Admin, Intermediate, and Beginner.

PICTURE NOT AVAILABLE

For this class select (left click on) the Intermediate icon. This icon represents your User Account.

You have logged on to your user account.

SHUTTING DOWN YOUR LAPTOP

At the end of each class all laptops must be shut down in the following sequence:Exit (terminate) all programs that are running (to be discussed later)Left click on the Start button (lower left corner, then left click on Shutdown.

20

Now let's turn the computer on again and log into your user account.

The ICONS represent programs that can be launched (opened), files that can be opened by an application, or folders that contain icons representing programs or other folders. The bar across the bottom is called the TASK BAR. In the left hand corner of thetask bar is the START button (more later). In the right hand corner is the clock. The clock keeps time even when the computer is powered off. The clock chip inthe computer has a small battery that keeps it running when the power is off oreven if the main battery is removed.

In between the clock and the START button are icons. The ones on the left are

This area is called the notification area. Put the cursor over any of the icons on the task bar and you will get a pop-up that tells you the name of the program. For more information about the notification area see - http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/win_tray_taskbar_notifications_overview.mspx?mfr=true

23

WINDOWS 10 USER INTERFACE

MOUSE INTERFACE

The mouse is one of several devices in the Pointing Device class. One function of the mouse is to control the position of the cursor (pointer) on the screen.Other functions are to initiate actions and to display additional functions that can be performed on an object.

Left mouse button – single click → selects the target (note highlight)Left click and hold – used to drag an object

Double click (two left button clicks in rapid succession) causes the action indicated by target. (Some targets in some environments will take action on a single left click. Example - Start button lower left corner single left click is sufficient.)

Right click – single click of right mouse button usually displays a pop-up containing additional functions that can be performed on the object

Scroll wheel – performs the function of the scroll bar at the side of a window when rotated. When pressed and released, it perform the scroll function by moving the mouse up or down.

One disadvantage of the mouse is that it requires a flat surface to move the mouse over to get the desired effect. The most common type of mouse is the optical mouse.

NETWORK CONNECTIVITY

The Greater Palm Bay Senior Center supports WiFi connectivity for users with computers with wireless connection capability. There are three public WiFi networks:

GPBSC HALL (password gpbscab2)GPBSC Public (password gpbscab1)GPBSC Annex (no password)

For our class we will use GPBSC Annex. The Wireless access point is on the wall in front of you to the left of the TV.

The laptop you are using should be set up to automatically connect to the GPBSC ANNEX network.

You can see this at the bottom right hand corner of your display.

Hovering the mouse pointer over the icon will result in a pop-up with the name of the router and if it is connected to the internet. It may be necessary to issue a command to connect to the network.

25

Clicking on the bar icon will cause the following display to appear:

26

To connect to a network, click on the Network you want to connect to and you will see this:

The pop-up will inform you of the WiFi networks available and which ones are connected. When you click one one of the networks, you will be offered the option to connect (or to disconnect if it is already connected). There may be a check box that offers the option to automatically connect to the selected network when detected.

27

BASIC OPERATIONS

The following are some basic operations that we will be using throughout the course:

Clicking the Left Mouse ButtonDouble Clicking the Left Mouse ButtonClicking the Right Mouse button Opening (starting) a programDragging an object on the displayResizing a Window Closing a program

Left click mouse button on the desktop

A single left click of the mouse button when the cursor is over an icon will Select the icon. The selected icon will receive the next action you perform. Some of these actions are:

• Drag (or Move) the icon - hold the left mouse button down and move the mouse

• Start the program - Press the enter key on the keyboard (this is the same as a double left click as we will see later.)

• Copy, Cut, or Delete the icon – to be discussed later

Dragging an icon:Left click (and hold) on the Internet Explorer icon on the DesktopNow drag the icon to an empty spot on the Desktop and release

Right click mouse button

A single click of the right mouse button will result in a pop-up menu which will give a list of options that can be performed on the selected object.

For example, right click on a desktop icon and the first optional command is to Open the program associated with the object. A single right click only activates the pop-up. No action is taken until a selection is made in the pop-up by left clicking on the desired option.

28

Now start the program Internet Explorer - Double click on icon

This will cause Internet Explorer to open in a Window on the desktop. IE will open in either Full Screen mode or in a Window.

In the upper right hand corner of the IE window you will see three boxes:Left - an underscore character ( _ )Center – either one rectangle or two overlapping rectanglesRight – a red box with a white or black X

Clicking on the first box will cause the window to diminish to an icon on the Task Bar.Clicking on the middle box will cause the program's window to go to full screen or reduce down to something less than full screen.Clicking on the right box will terminate the program. Now terminate the IE program.

On the desktop place cursor on IE icon:IE icon (RC >) Properties

This will cause a pop-up (or dialog box) to appear:

29

This pop-up gives a selection of optional functions that you can perform on this object (icon).

Computer “shorthand” used in this course:o RT Arrow ( >) indicates a single left click o 2 RT Arrows ( > > ) indicates two left clicks (double click)o RT Arrow with a “RC” preceding it (RC > ) indicates a RIGHT click.

For example the command below:

Start > Control Panel > Change Desktop Background

implies the following operations:

Place the cursor on the Start buttonLeft click onceMove the cursor into the pop-up and place it over Control Panel and left clickMove the cursor into the pop-up and select Personalization

In this pop-up, you can change the color of the desktop.
