Port of Sines implemented his enterprise Geographic
Information and Identification System (SIIG), fully supported
on ArcGIS technology and supporting all the functional areas
in the harbour.
The SIIG is manly WEB based and has seven modules and
functional areas to support engineering, environment, safety
and security, planning port operations, concessions and
domain areas, supporting decisions based on static and
dynamic geographical information of all his hinterland and
foreland.

Initial Objective
1. Enable visualization and Interaction with dynamic data
2. Provide visual support to the planning of operations port, allowing real time
display of ship movement, incorporation of rules and restrictions related to
manouvers, berthing requests and infrastructure availability
3. Support everyday operations (engineering, planning, land sort, security,
environment, port lease management and other) with georreferencced
information;
4. Facilitate the access to information across the organization and integrate with
existing legacy systems
5. Improve effectiveness in existing procedures
6. Increase competitiveness at the Port of Sines

This system is integrated with other electronic management
systems:
With the full integration between AIS and JUL enhances geo-referenced information available
on the system, thus providing the positioning of ships in real time as well as the location of
trains and trucks to and from the Port of Sines.

Objective of the project
• Development of a "Road and Rail Transportation module" based on the
current technological infrastructure of Portal SIIG;
• This module aims the identification and traceability of road and rail
transportation of cargo handling and containers carried, in the
hinterland of the port of Sines, with special emphasis on logistical corridors .
• Full integration with SIIG and JUP (II), using Web services between the
two platforms to ensure that new SIIG module can provide all the
information related to cargo handling and containers, reporting points and
scales, associated with the road and rail network.
Portal SIIG – Rail & Road Transport Module (SIIG – Identification and Geographical Information System)
21
• Geographical representation of the trucks and
trains
• Truck and train positioning and information
• Railway alerts
• Navigation, search and query about trains,
trucks and cargo
• Flow of containers and cargo handling.
• Full integration with JUP using webservices

Implementation
Under the planning based on operational information and safety, is it
possible to:
• Perform various scenarios of operation;
• Perform scenarios of occupation of the port with time frame (Gantt);
• Optimizing the quay’s occupation and the resources used in the
operations.

Goals achieved
• Improving the service provided to
customers
• knowing all the logistic procedure of
transportation from origin and destination
• optimize operational resources
• simplify and make operational
procedures more efficient
• increase the fluidity of ships by reducing
the staying in port.
