Internal communication and employee engagement: Your role as leaders
A better way
The business case
Communication & employee engagement
• Employee engagement is essential to growth
• Talking to employees is even more important in tough economic times. If you’re trying
to deal with difficult or contentious issues in a company with a poor communications
culture, it’s a double negative
• But, if your communications environment is more positive and people aren’t afraid to
ask questions, you can manage potential problems in a smoother way
• For Speedy, internal communication is now more important than ever (especially to
our mobile workforce, including drivers)
The right communication tools can boost employee satisfaction, trust and productivity
Finding a better way
Living the brand
Our people & our brand
• Having good communication internally is also crucial to how a brand comes across
externally
• A brand is as a brand does. You have to behave as you wish to be received
• We recognise that if we don’t get the internal communications right, the promise is
going to sound pretty hollow in the outside world...
A better way
Brand book & employee competition
• A new ‘Brand Book’ will shortly be given to every employee – the book will bring the
brand & the Speedy spirit to life, giving real life examples of employees ‘Finding a
Better Way’. This will be followed up by a full internal brand activity programme.
• A competition to be launched pre-national conference inviting employees to
give an example of how Darwin has enabled them to ‘Find a Better Way’ of delivering
better customer service – look out for details coming soon
An informed & engaged workforce is a shared responsibility
Lead by example
Our communication programme is in its infancy and we acknowledge there is still a lot
to do (i.e. reducing & controlling emails!). To make it a success I need YOUR support:
• Understand link between an engaged workforce and business success
• Take responsibility and articulate the company message consistently
• Don’t hide from difficult issues or blame other departments
• Turn business messages into messages that are meaningful & personal for the
individual and their role, so they understand what part they play...
An informed & engaged workforce is a shared responsibility
Lead by example
• Use communication tools appropriately; ensure your reports do the same
• Lead by example, connect with & support your reports, identify best practice
• Bring the brand to life & look for ways to ‘find a better way’
• Be CONSISTENT and TELL, TELL & TELL again what it is we are doing and why!
In response to PM5 results, communication training for managers to be rolled out later in
the year along with measured KPI’s for engagement
