Working with the same TV video crew, we
created our first instructional video and I
hit the dog show circuit, to spread the
word about canine massage. Those were
lonely days. People were so unaccustom-
ed to the concept of massaging dogs
that I could actually see them turning to
avoid walking close to my vendor’s
booth. We sold only a couple of dozen
videos from our website of the first few
months. One morning at the Detroit
Kennel Club Show, a young woman told
me she really liked my videos. I asked her
name, since I knew the names of
everyone we’d sent them to. When she
told me that she had gotten it from a
friend of hers, who had gotten it from a
friend of hers, who had gotten it from her
dog club, I thought about where our
orders for videos had come from. I
realized that seeds had been planted,
albeit sparingly, all over the US, in
Canada, and in Europe.
That was then. Fast forward fifteen years
and we have a thriving, growing industry.
Our network and influence is expanding.
The NBCAAM is offering competency
assurance credentialing. International
publications such as the Dog Fancy’s
Natural Dog Summer 2012 refer to the
IAAMB/ACWT as a primary source for
people to check if they want information
about learning or contracting for canine
massage and canine water therapy.

expansion of a great animal massage

Your President, Jonathan Rudinger
President’s message June, 2012
Hello. And to all our new members, and
new Preferred Education Providers:
welcome.
I’d like to share a little history and some
personal perspective with you. On July
11, 1997, I was interviewed and
demonstrated an equine massage for
NBC TV.
The horse that I had arranged for the
massage was more receptive than I
had anticipated, and within minutes
was in a state of sleepy stasis. The
videographer moved around to get
interesting angles, but the horse was not
volunteering the requisite rolling eyes
and nodding head. My interviewer
looked around, and, spotting an old
dusty farm dog lying in the shadow of
the barn, looked into the camera,
announcing, “Dogs get stiff backs.
Jonathan works on dogs, too.” This was
an on-camera challenge moment. I
was an LMT and a horseman. I had
defined myself as one who only
massages people and horses. Until that
moment, canine massage had never
entered my awareness. I wasn’t sure
what to expect. This was new territory.
I crouched down next to the golden
retriever, cupping his large heavy dusty
head in my hands. What happened
next was a momentary experience that
changed my life and initiated the birth
of the current PetMassageTM Institute.
As his eyes rolled back and his tongue
lolled drooling out his mouth, I watched
as a curtain opened, exposing the briefest
glimpse into a broader, deeper,
amazingly profound dimension. This was
the realm that I’d read that Edgar Casey
tapped into! In addition to the sensory
experience I was having in the moment, I
realized that the seemingly unrelated skills
that I had accumulated over the years,
were all coming together; and I was now
poised to be able to help people who
had dogs like this one, realize the benefits
of my passions: massage therapy and
Healing Touch bodywork. Here was real
potential for doing good. I saw these skills
helping dogs’ lives, and the lives of their
owners. I saw the opportunity of teaching
others the skills of canine massage so that
this vision could spread. The epiphany
lasted a fraction of a second; in which
time I saw thousands of dogs, thousands
of people massaging dogs, books and
videos, schools, a canine massage
industry and more.
After the filming, I started to do my
homework. I searched online (this was
pre-Google) and discovered there were
only a handful of schools who taught
canine massage. As luck would have it,
a couple of weeks later, most of these
instructors were at the Equine Affaire, a
huge international horse show held in
Columbus, OH. I attended the show and
had the opportunity to observe and meet
Linda (T-Touch) Tellington-Jones, Patricia
(Integrated Touch Therapy) Shaw, and
Mary (Equissage) Schrieber. I studied
everything I could find by Dr. Michael
W. Fox, Jack (Equine Sportsmassage)
Meagher, Jean Pierre (Animal Awareness)
Hourdebaigt, MaryJean (Cat Massage)
Ballner and Joanne (Lang Institute) Lang.
I noted that each had individual
perspectives on what massage is, how it
is to be performed, and what it can do.
I felt freed, as the massage form that I
saw myself teaching was sourced in myo-
fascial explorations and energywork.

“Massaging Tiger Lily”

Tiger Lily is a sweet six pound
Maltese I have had the pleasure of
massaging. I met Lily and her dad
at the park district dog training
classes a few years ago. Recently,
when Lily would get excited, her
breathing increased to the point of
hyperventilation.
On January 10, 2011, little Lily had
what her vet called a spinal stroke
that affected her back legs. The vet
gave Lily steroid injections and
Valium.
No one knew if Lily would ever be
the same again. Luckily, Lily’s dad is
a nurse. He began range of motion
exercises on her back legs and
eased up on the Valium because it
was making her unstable. Lily’s
housemate, Rosebud, who is also a
Maltese, would walk or run next to
Lily to hold her up and support her
diminutive frame.
Over time Lily’s tiny legs began
moving again. When Lily gets
excited her breathing increases and
she makes a strange barking
(honking) sound. In order to calm
her breathing and lessen her
anxiety, massaging and a lot of TLC
help.
I started to massage Lily after Clyde
and his wife attended a canine
massage therapy demonstration I
gave for my dog training club
where we are both members. The
first time I massaged Lily, I was
amazed at the rigidness of her ribs.
She had this tiny little body with hard,
distended ribs. I began to massage
her gently. Lily was very receptive to
the massage and after a few sessions
she calmed down quicker, her
breathing slowed, and the honking
stopped. Whenever I went to their
home, I was initially greeted with
excitement, barking and heavy
breathing. I used a variety of
massage techniques to calm her and
after a short time she relaxed, her
breathing slowed, and she melted
into my lap.
At a recent party her pet
parents had at their home, Lily
became over stimulated and
began her usual “honking,”
which increases with her level
of excitement. Clyde handed
Lily to me and I immediately
began massaging her. Holding
her in my hand, close to my
body, I began stroking her tiny
body and talking softly to her.
Within a short time, her
breathing slowed and the
honking ceased.
For me, this is what it is all
about…helping animals! And,
if I can enhance their lives in
any way I can – this is what I
want to do with the rest of my
life!

The Living Better Stronger Longer™
Canine Obesity and Fitness Study
Rocky’s Retreat®, a leading canine
health and fitness center located in
Orlando, FL, has announced the
launch of its landmark study to
improve the health and fitness of
dogs. Based on Rocky’s Retreat’s
expertise and ability to transform the
health and fitness of its clients, they
have been commissioned by an
international consulting firm to
conduct a study into the current
obesity and health crisis occurring in
our nation’s dogs.
The Living Better Stronger Longer™
Canine Obesity and Fitness Study
consists of two parts – an online
survey and a 12 week on-site
program specifically designed to
show that a structured weight loss
and fitness program can help a dog
lose weight, rebuild strength and
muscle mass, and improve overall
health and fitness. The purpose of
the survey is to understand the
current fitness level of America’s
dogs. They need a total of 1000
respondents for that survey.
The study is aimed at validating the
efficacy of the most recent
techniques in canine health and
fitness. On-site program activities
consist of swimming in an ozone-
sanitized indoor warm water pool,
exercising on DogTread treadmills,
and strength, balance and flexibility
training using FitPAWS® Canine
Conditioning Equipment. Results will
be published and participants will
receive an advance copy of the
results.
Sherri Cappabianca and Toby Gass,
founders of Rocky’s Retreat Canine
Health & Fitness Center and experts
in the field of canine health and
wellness are looking for a total of
100 overweight, or out of shape,
older dogs in the Central Florida
area to participate in this 12 week
on-site program. They will also
accept dogs from other areas as
long as the dogs can physically
attend the two 90-minute sessions
per week at Rocky’s Retreat state-
of-the-art facility.
Participant dogs are already
enrolled in the on-site program and
in a short amount of time, are seeing
results in the form of weight loss and
increased stamina. Survey results are
also steadily coming in from various
parts of the country. If you would like
to complete the survey, or be a part
of this important study, please go to
http://www.DogHealthFitnessStudy.
com/ for more information and to
apply.
Sherri and Toby would appreciate
your help in spreading the word
about the study, and the survey in
particular for those people in other
areas of the country.

Warm Water Swimming for Canines

Warm water swimming has been
a beneficial fitness choice for
humans suffering from disabilities
and pain due to injury and
arthritis for some time. I am
pleased that this form of
exercise is becoming a main-
stream option for our canine
companions.
Swimming is an ideal form of
exercise for chronic conditions,
pre-operative conditioning,
post-operative recovery,
obesity, athletic conditioning and
general fitness in dogs. For dogs
who have difficulty weight bearing
due to illness, injury or obesity,
swimming is an excellent way for
them to use their muscles without
putting stress on damaged or weak
muscles or painful joints. The warm
water promotes circulation to an
injured area while at the same time
increasing muscle and joint
flexibility.
Swimming also provides an
excellent cardiovascular workout.
Water creates resistance which
limits the rate at which a dog’s
limbs can move through the water.
Due to this resistance a five-minute
workout may be equivalent to
running five miles on land. In
addition to providing numerous
physical benefits, swimming can
also provide emotional benefits. I
have worked with many shelter
dogs who have gained confidence
and trust after embarking on a
swim program.
When a dog loses their ability
to walk due to illness or injury,
the weightlessness of
swimming can give them the
freedom to move freely and
restore their confidence.
Watching a disabled dog
swim with exhilaration after a
toy is a Beautiful thing.
It is very important to check
with your veterinarian before
beginning a swim program for
your dog.

Animal Massage combined with
Bio Acoustic Music
Years of teaching Animal massage
have opened many paths of
learning different techniques,
each, to get better physical and
emotional results for the animals.
Striving to find more creative ways
through art forms and research,
with the goal of bringing human
and animals closer together with a
therapeutic approach for our work
using touch. I would like to share
with you canine massage and
therapeutic music as an example
of this creativeness through art and
research.
In a class room setting for canine
massage work not all environments
are created equal. You may have
a shelter, a doggie day care, or a
class setting where people bring
their dogs waiting in cars or kennels
to be worked on. For most class
cases there is a pretty good
chance that the dogs do not know
each other and they are dealing
with some form of anxiety or stress.
When bringing dogs in for massage
sessions for the students to work on,
instinctual emotional issues will arise
in the canine, some being more
intense than others.
Each dog is placed in a corner of
the room to create their own
workspace. If there is a separate
room that would be used for the
most unsettled dog. You can spend
ten to twenty minutes in a class
having to use every calming
technique you know of just to be
able to get them in a workable
state of mind.
We started using “Through a Dogs
Ear” in class which is Bio Acoustic
Music created in special octaves
and rhythms to affect the central
nervous system in the dog to a
calming state. It works on people
too because it also affected me as
well in class while we were in our
practical sessions with the dogs.
You could see the results within 5 to
10 minutes. The results being the
dogs would start to settle and calm
down.
This started me thinking about how I
could create Bio acoustic Music I
felt was effective for dogs that
would have beneficial effects to
decreases stress, separation anxiety
and fear base stress for dogs that
are in re-training programs for
emotional behavior.
Since I was a music major in
college at Sonoma State University
and also currently having a
professional rehabilitation practice
working with dogs and horses full
time on a competitive level for
World class events, and also
traveling for education and
lectures as well.
These passions started to weave
together. It became a calling to
create an Animal Massage CD with
Therapeutic Music. When I am out
promoting Animal Massage the
number one question I always get
is, can you teach me a few strokes
to use on my dog so I know I am
not hurting him or her? I thought if I
could create a CD that had simple
instruction in a meditative way and
gave people the option to use
either the music alone or instruction
and Music, it would prove to be a
simple and effective way to
promote more massage at home
for their pet and therapeutic touch
for themselves. It has also proven to
be wonderful homework for the
client in between professional
massage work.
We all know the benefits of touch
through massage, and most of us
use music to create a more
relaxing environment. I wanted to
take it one step further and use Bio
Acoustic with the music I
composed, with simple chords or
single notes being played in
specific registers, that creates a
calming state of mind. Another
aspect that needed to be
considered was the type of
instrumentation to be used. Dogs
seemed to really be affected by
piano, harp, calming voice, certain
wood flutes and warm guitar
sounds. The rhythms are slowed to
so many beats per minute, so the
breathing and heart rate of the
animal can be slowly lowered to a
calming state. The animal’s body
syncs up to the music; this is truly
amazing to watch how the central
nervous system works.
With all the noise pollution in our
homes these days the animals
have to adjust to the environment
that we have created for them.
Believe it or not that can manifest
into stress on their bodies. The
barrage of cell phones ringing,
music that is high energy,
computers, cars, overhead planes;
vacuums with high pitches are
huge contributors to this stressful
environment.
Using the Bio Acoustic music with
massage whether it is the CD I
composed or other Bio Acoustic
music out there can help decrease
that stress for the dog and the
person. Just think of it as another
creative way to help people with
their animals connect through
touch and rhythms.

PetMassage Day is July 11th.
Toledo OH, June 28, 2012. The Honorable Mike
Bell, Mayor of the City of Toledo OH, issues a
proclamation congratulating Jonathan Rudinger
and the PetMassage Training and Research
Institute and commemorating its fifteenth year in
business. Noted in the proclamation is that
PetMassage and the IAAMB, supports the city’s
international image by attracting students and
animal care luminaries from all over the world to
Toledo through its workshops and conferences.
July 11th was the date in 1997, when Jonathan first
had the insightful experience as described in the
President’s message.
July 11th shall be henceforth recognized as
PetMassage Day.
Jonathan, Anastasia and the staff at PetMassage
invite you to celebrate with them. Mark the date
on your calendar and treat a dog and yourself to
some bodywork!

As a Corporate Member of ABMP, IAAMB/ACWT members can get
more than “Just Insurance”.
Occurrence-form coverage, which ABMP pioneered in 1993 as a member
benefit protects members from late-filed claims.
The highest insurance limits available in the field — the profession’s best value
in liability coverage. Ours are the highest aggregate coverage’s available
— $3 million professional liability (malpractice), another $3 million general
liability (slip and fall) and yet another $3 million products liability.
Legal defense coverage, $100,000 premises fire-damage coverage for
renters and no charge for obtaining an additional insured endorsement if
requested by a member employer or landlord. All this is covered by our
basic membership fee.
A courteous, expedient, well-trained professional staff when members count
on ABMP most — when a claim has been made.
Optional insurance programs — low-cost optional business personal property
insurance can insure massage tables and other office possessions.
Exclusive member discounts — including a low-cost credit card program to
make a practice credit-card friendly, tax services, office supplies,
computer supplies, wireless services and products, travel/lodging and car
rental, professional subscriptions and resources, a legal support program,
health programs, a members-only credit card and more.
