“Globalization and IAPD”

It has been some time since our last newsletter and

the IAPD Board has been busy with challenges and at

the same time, rewarding tasks. Prof Gerald Wright

has been greatly missed after many years of service

to IAPD as the immediate past Secretary General.

New Board members together with Dr Joseph Chan,

the new Secretary General, have

quickly stepped in and have

assumed their roles and continue

with the tasks at hand. All Board

members dedicated their efforts with passion to the

progress of IAPD. In this regard, I would like to thank

all my colleagues for their active role within our

organization.

IAPD now represents 57 nations, and although commu-

nication across boundaries has always existed within

IAPD, globalization, cross cultural awareness and

technology are redefining the way we communicate.

IAPD has faced ongoing interest and communication

with important paediatric dental organizations. More

recently, Dr Joel Berg, President of the American

Academy of Pediatric Dentistry has shared the same

interest in organizations such as IAPD and promising

interactions will develop.

IAPD introduced this year a two year membership at a

reduced cost of €108 Euros for individual members

and €54 Euros for postgraduate students. This is an

amazing deal given the benefits of this membership,

including a subscription to the International Journal

of Paediatric Dentistry (IJPD). I hope many of you or

your colleagues take advantage of this offer to

support an organization whose primary role is educa-

tion and to contribute to children’s dental health

worldwide.

IAPD had a successful regional meeting in Russia dur-

ing April 2012. This was a

combined effort of the

Association of Paediatric

Dentists of Russia, the

Moscow State University

of Medicine & Dentistry and IAPD. This meeting

attracted more than 270 new IAPD members in 2012.

The success of this meeting is due to the efforts of

all involved, but especially Prof Marcelo Bonecker

(Chair of the IAPD Education Committee), Prof Laris-

sa Kiselnikova (Russia) and all guest lecturers, among

others: Prof Anna Fuks, Prof Monty Duggal (both

IAPD speakers) and Prof Luc Martens (Belgium).

IAPD is again holding a Regional Meeting in Sao Paulo,

Brazil on 25-25 April 2013. This meeting is coordi-

nated by the IAPD Education Committee, through

Prof Bonecker and has attracted a variety of interna-

tional speakers and sponsors. This meeting promises

to be an exciting event and more information may be

found through our website or http://

www.iapdmeetingbrazil.com.br/en/index.php

I am also proud to announce that Prof Anna Fuks, one

of our most valued members and a past president of

this organization was awarded the 2013 Distinguished

Service Award by the American Academy of Pediatric

Dentistry (AAPD). This is the most prestigious award

given by the AAPD. Prof Fuks has always been a role

model to this organization with relentless dedication,

motivation and hard work. She is truly deserving of

this award and on behalf of the Board of Directors I

congratulate her for her achievement.

It is with great pleasure that I communicate that we

are only a few months away from the 24th Congress

of IAPD in June this year. The local organising

committee in Seoul, South Korea has been busy with

preparations for this upcoming event. To date, 790

abstracts from 54 countries have already been

submitted to this congress. We hope you can join us

in this important event. We must congratulate the

efforts and hard work of Prof Sang Ho Lee, Chair of

the 24th Congress and its local organising committee.

This report would not be complete without showing

my appreciation to Ms Sylvie Dutilloy, our association

coordinator, whose constant dedication and hard

work on behalf of IAPD do not go unnoticed.

Best wishes and see you in Seoul!

A Message from the Secretary General

Dear Colleagues

When I was asked by the newslet-

ter editor to contribute a mes-

sage, I thought it was not very

long ago that I wrote one. In fact

it was almost a year ago. Looking

back we had a very busy and

encouraging year. The Regional

Meeting in Moscow last April was

a great success with over 300

participants. Prof. Larissa Kiselni-

kova and her organising commit-

tee must be congratulated for

their efforts in promoting the

Regional Meeting and member-

ship of IAPD. The IAPD Sympo-

sium at the FDI Congress in Hong Kong last August

was also very well attended with Prof. Bernadette

Drummond as our speaker. An IAPD booth was set

up to promote the IAPD Congress in Seoul. There

was remarkable interest in the Seoul Congress and

we ran out of promotion material before the close

of the trade exhibition.

We also have an exciting few months ahead of us.

Our next Regional Meeting will be in São Paulo,

Brazil on 25 & 26 of April. If you are planning to

attend, the deadline for registration is on 28 March

2013. National Societies who would like to host an

IAPD Regional Meeting in your own country must let

me know as soon as possible as the Board of Direc-

tors will be considering new applications in the

Board Meeting in June 2013. Information on the

hosting of Regional Meeting can be found on our

website: (http://www.iapdworld.org/edu/super_pages.php?ID=edu3)

The preparation for

24th IAPD Congress in

Seoul is in full swing

and in order to enjoy

a discounted registration fee you must complete

your registration before 31 March 2013. I am

confident that it will be an excellent Congress and I

look forward to seeing you in Seoul.

The masthead of the International Journal of

Paediatric Dentistry states that the journal “was

formed in 1991 by the merger of the Journals of

the International Association of Paediatric Den-

tistry and the British Society of Paediatric Den-

tistry. Published bi-monthly, it has a true inter-

national scope and aims to promote the highest

standard of education, practice and research in

paediatric dentistry world-

wide.” Volume 22 was pub-

lished this past year, 2012, containing six issues

with 72 pages for 61 manuscripts, and two special

supplemental issues. Supplement one reviewed

the care of

patients with Epidermolysis Bulosis, and supple-

ment two reported the abstracts presented at

the annual meeting of the British Society of Pae-

diatric Dentistry annual scientific meeting.

Members of the Association receive hard copies

of each issue. They also enjoy free on-line

access to all issues since volume one published in

1991. During the past year, there were more than

118,000 downloads of journal articles. There are

now more than 1285 individual journal subscrip-

tions in addition to 255 institutional and 4259

library subscriptions. These numbers

reflect the renown of the Journal world-wide.

The Journal also serves the important purpose of

providing for authors a venue to publish world

class papers. During 2012, there were 644

submissions from 63 countries, representing 485

scientific papers, 109 case reports, and 50 other

types of papers. However, because of

limited journal space, the acceptance rate this

past year was only 7.6%. Our Editor-in-Chief,

Professor Chris Deery had the difficult task of

selecting only the best papers for publication. He

was assisted by a 20 member Editorial Board and

more than 720 international reviewers. They per-

form their task diligently so that the average

time from submission of papers to final

decision was only 32 days and those accepted

papers likely will be published within a year.

Prospective authors

should review Professor

Deery’s editorial in the

January, 2012 issue for

suggestions regarding

proper preparation of

papers for submission,

and his editorial in the January, 2013 issue

reviewing why papers are rejected.

Association members should be proud of their

Journal as it represents a significant benefit of

membership in the Association.

Dear members, colleagues, and friends,

The 24th IAPD 2013 Congress is only about 110 days away. Following the successful IAPD Greece Congress, the IAPD 2013 Local Organizing Committee is doing our best to make an unforgettable event through high quality academic programs and various social events. For the past year, the Korean LOC has had 14 LOC meetings, 6 Scientific Committee Meetings, and 2 workshops to fully prepare for the IAPD 2013 Congress below.

[What’s New in IAPD 2013 Congress?]

1. More fun and interesting academic programs

will be available with new formats such as ‘Clinical Practice: What’s New’, ‘Treasure Island’, and more. During the plenary sessions, participants will have opportunities to ask online questions to have more interactivity.

2. The exhibition hall will be used not only for

exhibition purpose but also for various events and resting places during the congress. Also, a collection of about 150 rare old text books of paediatric dentistry in the world will be displayed at a special exhibition space, which will offer a glimpse into the past.

3. Through various social events, participants will

feel unparalleled hospitality with affection, generosity, and attachment, which we call in Korean word, “jung”

The workshop about oral hygiene is themed as “Oral hygiene: In-struction and Monitoring Caries Activity”, which will be facilitated by W.E. van Amerongen (Netherlands), Marcelo Bőnecker (Brazil), J. Kim (Korea), and N. Lee (Korea) and the prevention suggestions for caries risk assessment will be presented during such workshop.

Argentina Association of Dentistry for Children

The Austrian

2012 we had

the biggest

event since

our founda-

It is already a well known tradition that every 2 years

a symposium of the Austrian Association of Paediat-

ric Dentistry is held in Salzburg. Due to the fact that

in 2012 the Austrian General Dental Congress was to

be held in Salzburg, too, both events were merged

together. On the one hand this gave the paediatric

dentists the chance to meet colleagues and friends

while hearing good lectures. On the other hand it of-

fered general dentists the chance to peek into paedi-

atric dentistry without having to visit a separate

event. This concept apparently convinced lots of

dentists who came from all parts of Austria, Germany

and Switzerland. Lectures started with news on pulp

regeneration and revascularization on Friday after-

noon. These topics obviously were so popular that the

room was bursting with people and many listeners

could not find a place in the room. This picture did

not change a lot later on, when restorations in prima-

ry and young permanent teeth were discussed. So, on

Saturday, the pedo program was moved to the largest

existing lecture hall in the building. This day was de-

voted to the psychology of childhood in the morning,

followed by seminars to different topics in the after-

noon. Finally, in the evening, while having a wonderful

dinner in an old manor with live music, awards and

prizes could be given to some of the successful

participants.

Activities from National Member Societies

The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD)

celebrated our 60th Anniversary in 2012 and contin-

ues to thrive with an increasing membership of nearly

600. We had a very successful and well attended An-

nual Scientific Conference which was held in Newcas-

tle-upon-Tyne and attracted a total of 300 dele-

gates, including colleagues from overseas and dental

care professionals (DCP's). Speakers included Pro-

fessor Jimmy Steele, author of the "Steele report",

and the highly entertaining and knowledgeable Pro-

fessor John Whitworth who provided a well received

endodontic update. For the first time, we held a DCP

day and

offered a DCP prize for the best verbal presentation

of an abstract.

BSPD now looks forward to hosting the IAPD 2015

conference to be held in Glasgow under the Chair of

Professor Richard Welbury. An exciting scientific

programme, designed by Professor Helen Rodd, is

already well under development. The local organising

committee look forward to welcoming you to Glasgow

in two years' time.

On a political level our current challenge is to inform

the Commissioning process for Paediatric Dentistry in

England. This is a time of great change but we are

striving to ensure that our voice is heard and that

any decisions made are in the best interest of Chil-

drens' oral health. This year will see the publication

of a new care pathway for children.

Japanese Society of Pediatric Dentistry (JSPD)

Activities from National Member Societies

The Declaration of the 50th Anniversary

Conference of the Japanese Society of Pediatric

Dentistry

The 50th Anniversary and Annual Meeting of the

Japanese Society of Pediatric Dentistry (JSPD) was

held on May 12-13th, 2012 in Tokyo, Japan. The main

theme of the 50th annual meeting was “The future of

children and the future of

dentistry” hoping for a

bright future of children.

Totally 1900 people, 1750

JSPD members and 150

guests, participated and

celebrated the 50th

Anniversary of JSPD. Many special guests from

around the world were invited to the Ceremony in

Japan. Prof. Eduardo Alcaino President of IAPD and

Dr. Halimah Awang President of PDAA gave speeches

for us at the Cere-

mony. And we had an

international sympo-

sium about the theme

of “Future prospects

and role of pediatric

dentistry in countries

with decreased

carious teeth”. Guest

panelists were Prof. Mark Hector(University of

Dundee, Past-President of IAPD), Prof. Göran

Dahllöf(Kalorinska University、Sweden), Prof.

Nigel M. King(University of Western Australia,

Australia), Prof. Sang Ho Lee (Chosun University,

Korea)and Prof. Mitsuko Inoue (Showa University,

Vice President of 50th Anniversary JSPD, Japan).

Then, we declared the following four aims about

activities of JSPD.

Thinking about the future of

children and the future of

dentistry, we will develop our

society activities towards the

realization of four aims for

next half century.

We will demonstrate

scientifically that dento-oral functions influ-

ence the quality of life in the every stage of

human life and will make this knowledge public.

We will promote a support system for children

in dentistry to support them from a viewpoint

of the physiological development of mind and

body.

We will build an environment where all children

can enjoy the dental service with high quality.

We will promote the cooperation with all child

health professionals which is essential for

accomplishment of the above aims.

The president of JSPD was changed from Prof.

Yoshinobu Asada to Prof. Youichi Yamasaki

(Kagoshima University) last May. The 51st Annual

Meeting of JSPD is going to be held on May 23-24th,

Philippine Pediatric Dental Society (PPDSI)

It has been a busy year for the

Philippine Pediatric Dental Society.

The main project for 2012 was

focused on Continuing Education

not only for the members but also

for Filipino dentists based in the

different parts of the archipelago. Aside from the

usual quarterly seminars to update the members, the

Society staged four well-received Area Conventions –

in South Luzon on July 23, 2012, the Visayas on Sep-

tember 13-14, 2012, North Luzon on November 21,

2012 and Mindanao on January 21, 2013. During the

rounds, it was also a good opportunity to include in

the program the information dissemination of the

Society’s Fluoride Guidelines. The Fluoride Guidelines

is a pet project of the Council of Past Presidents

which lasted for 16 months and presented the Socie-

ty’s recommendations when it came to the different

vehicles and materials containing fluoride. Infor-

mation from the Guidelines was also included in our

community outreaches in numerous day care centers

and preschools, children who were participating in the

Special Olympics, diabetic patients of the Philippine

General Hospital, families of Overseas Filipino

Workers and orphans of the Our Lady of Caysasay

Orphanage in Batangas province. Lastly, the Society

is also providing the manpower for a research project

that is sponsored by the FDI and the Philippine

Dental Association. 2012 was truly a dynamic year for

the Philippine Pediatric Dental Society.

Dr. Maritess Oliveros-Villarico

President

Philippine Pediatric Dental Society

Batang May ‘K’(BMK), a project of the Philippine

Dental Association (PDA), is part of the global

Live.Learn.Laugh(LLL) program of the FDI World

Dental Federation and Unilever International.

The Philippine Pediatric Dental Society (PPDSI) is

proud to have initiated, and to continue to support,

this project. BMK started off in 2007 when the FDI

approved the proposal for this public health program

to be piloted in Batangas Province. The program aims

to institutionalize preventive health interventions,

such as handwashing and toothbrushing, and proper

diet as regular activities in the day care setting.

These are meant to address health problems that

beset most Filipino children. BMK continues to benefit

approximately 108 day care centers and 2,900 day

care pupils every year.

LLL Phase 2 brings an additional ten municipalities and

8,000 children to the program. The sustainability of

BMK lies in giving the ownership of the program to the

local leaders, and keeping the implementation simple

and affordable. This ensures that even when the

formal LLL program ends, the healthy habits can con-

tinue with the children.

Another new aspect of LLL Phase 2 is the assessment

and evaluation side of the program. Here an assess-

ment team, composed of PPDSI members, voluntarily

participate in systemized data-gathering to support

the objectives of BMK. The research will review the

effects on the caries levels of the children and will

also study the behavioral changes with the children

and their parents.

Batang May 'K' relies on volunteer work provided by

PPDSI members, local civic organizations, and govern-

ment employees. The team is headed by project direc-

tor, Dr. Noel Vallesteros.

As the incoming president of our society, I would like

to share with you a project of one of our members

under the PPDSI and our mother organization, the

Philippine Dental Association. This project has been in

existence since 2008 and its goal is to improve the

oral health of Filipino children focusing on communi-

ties who are less privileged and under served.

Respectfully Yours,

Fenella Isabel G. Galvan,DMD

Taiwan Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (TAPD)

Activities from National Member Societies

The Taiwan Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (TAPD)

is the only organization representing the specialty of

Pediatric Dentistry in Taiwan. Established in 1992,

the members of TAPD has increased from 90 to 460

during the past twenty years. Certified pediatric

dentists received training in Taiwan and in foreign

countries, mainly in United States and Japan.

Each year, TAPD holds three to five continue educa-

tion conferences to provide updated academic infor-

mation in various fields. In 2012, TAPD welcomed the

world-renowned Prof. Anna Fuks from Israel, to give

lectures at APDC and our annual meeting on the

trend of pulp therapies for primary and young perma-

nent teeth. TAPD also invited Dr. Takashi Nezu, a

reputable ortho-

dontist from

Japan, to talk

about the early

treatment and

muscular func-

tional therapy

from the view-

point of an

orthodontist. In

addition to the

international speakers, TAPD also had several

Taiwanese leading pediatric dentists discussing the

issues of health insurances, the theory and clinic

experience of behavior management, and the devel-

opment of stem cells. Other invited lectures included

root canal therapy for traumatized permanent teeth

by an endondontist, and a judge to discuss medical

disputes and legal issues.

TAPD has been working with the Government of

Taiwan to fight

against the high

caries rate.

Weekly fluoride

rinse programs

at elementary

schools are

funded by the

government

budget and National Health Insurance covers

fluoride treatment for children under 5-years-old.

The President of TAPD, Dr. Jenjuhng Joseph Tsai,

had been advocating the establishment of a

“Children’s Oral Health Day”, and in 2012, the

Bureau of Health Promotion and TAPD officially set

the Wednesday of the October’s “National Oral

Health Week” the “National Children’s Oral Health

Day”. Besides USA, Taiwan is currently the only

country in the world to have an official national

month/day for children’s dental health.

TAPD also creates the slogan of “Dental visit by age

one, cavity- free for your young; Protect your teeth

from infancy, keep your teeth in old age” to address

the importance of the age one dental visit and

benefits of regular check-ups for dental health.

the difficulties we encounter for travelling abroad in

order to assist to international congresses, we fo-

cused on celebrating seminars and short courses with

national as well as international speakers.

Focusing on primary prevention of oral diseases we

had the privilege of counting with Dr. Rita Villena

from Peru, for a short course in caries risk assess-

We organized events nationwide, including a course in

Maracaibo where Dr. Luis Karakowsky from Mexico

shared newest techniques in restorative dentistry.

Our main event was held in Caracas, September

2012, when we celebrated the VII National Congress

of Paediatric Dentistry. It was a complete success

thanks to great participation of all our members and

to effort made by the Organizing Committee and the

fabulous speakers that shared their knowledge with

us. Topics such as Dental Stem Cells and Advances in

Paediatric Dentistry were discussed by Dr. Marc

Saadia from México. Dr. Heriberto Vera from México

who spoke about ART. We were very proud to count

with Dr. Anna Fuks from Israel who lectured on En-
