WHO IS THE INTERNATIONAL CODE COUNCIL (ICC)

The ICC was established in 1977

The first International Building Code 2000

Culminated effort of representatives of the three statutory members:

1. Building Officials and Code Administrators International, Inc. (BOCA)

2. International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO)

3. Southern Building Code Congress (SBCCI)

The intent was to draft a comprehensive set of regulations for building systems consistent with and inclusive of the scope of the existing model codes

A new edition is promulgated every 3 years

WHY THE ICC

In today’s modern world the establishment of the I-Codes allow Architects, Engineers and Contractors to pursue work throughout the country

This code is founded on principals intended to establish provisions consistent with the scope of a building code that adequately protects public health, safety and welfare

The I-Codes are a complete set of comprehensive, coordinated building safety and fire prevention codes

Building codes benefit public safety and support the industry’s need for one set of codes without regional limitations

WHO ENFORCES THE I-CODES

Fifty states and the District of Columbia have adopted the I-Codes at the state or jurisdictional level

Federal agencies who have adopted the I-Codes include: Architects of the Capitol, General Services Administration, National Park Services, Department of the State, U.S. Forest Service and the Veterans Administration

Other areas that have adopted the I-Code are Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands Code Association and Mexico’s CASEDI

WHAT IS THE ICC’S HIGH SCHOOL TECHNICAL TRAINING PROGRAM(HSTTP)AND CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT (COA)

The COA is the introductory certificate offered by the ICC

A certificate is available for the following disciplines: Building, Electrical, Mechanical and Plumbing

The program was established to introduce students to the world of building codes as they relate to their trades

The HSTTP and COA are based on two manuals – the International Residential Code (IRC) and the IRC Study Companion

Make students aware of the vast number of jobs available to someone with code knowledge

Provide the students the opportunity to earn the ICC’s introductory certificate

GOALS OF ICC’S HSTTP

Provide the technical school student the opportunity to learn the building codes as they learn their trades.

Offer the students the opportunity to learn how to navigate the code book in a visual and hands -on environment.

Provide the ICC’s Certificate of Achievement (introductory certificate) for building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical.

Ensure that students are aware of the magnitude of ICC certifications that are available to them.

Ensure students are educated on the careers available to them when one has ICC certification.

Educate the future work force and code officials.

WHY TEACH THE BUILDING CODES IN THE TECHNICAL SCHOOLS

The school is the perfect setting; it allows the student the opportunity to learn the codes in a hands-on environment

The codes are difficult to understand, but in a visual learning atmosphere student’s comprehend the codes quickly

All ICC certificate and certification exams are open book for students and code professionals

The students are studying for their exam using the same materials code officials use to prep for exams

The ICC acknowledges that the instructor is the teaching professional and encourages instructors to adapt their teaching method to meet their students’ needs

• Students learn the code associated with their trade.

• Students have the opportunity to earn all four COA’s.

• Students are introduced to the various careers associated with the building codes.

• Students are provided the opportunity to relate the building codes to their daily class project.

• The visual environment allows the students to comprehend the codes.

COSTS/BENEFITS OF THE HIGH SCHOOL TECHNICAL TRAINING PROGRAM

School’s annual membership - $150.00

Provides school with the ability to purchase from the ICC at the membership discounted prices

Provides the ICC website for review of code and standards, membership information, education and certifications along with employment opportunities

Provide daily updates concerning codes, ICC announcements, industry standards, publications and resources

Allows schools to purchase the Study Companion for $47.00

Study Companion can be used for four to five years

STUDENT MEMBERSHIPS

Student’s annual membership - $25.00

Student receives the IRC code book of choice. (We recommend confirming with your local jurisdiction what edition of the code is being currently enforced)

Instructors receive the students final exam

A student must receive a score of 70% to receive the Certificate of Achievement

Students have the opportunity to achieve a COA in all four disciplines
